  • Hi hi! Today's video is a quick little criticism session lol
    I really feel the need to name & shame these interior design diy projects that I see all over the internet because they are so bad to me
    1. faux window panes
    2. faux marble epoxy
    3. out of context wall paneling
    4. faux painted wood grain
    And just to be clear (!!!) I'm not criticizing diy as a concept or affordable design solutions - I'm criticizing approaching interior design with a disregard for authenticity & context, and a goal of tricking/fooling the people in your space.
    Let me know your thoughts! Hopefully you agree! hahah
    xx nd

      Buy quality items that you love, that serve a function and work with the space (scale, color palette ) If needed, paint the walls or install wallpaper As for the character of the architecture, consider the architectural style and figure out if you're missing anything or should upgrade those things (baseboards, doors, bookshelves, nooks, built in seating). Figure out if separating open floor spaces if necessary. If yes see online how others do it while keeping with the style.

    Faux bois (false wood) has a venerable, long history starting in the Renaissance, made from concrete and iron. It’s a trompe l’oeuil effect. In Mexico it’s a rusticating technique. So, for myself, I’d say, the aesthetics IS the issue. If they’re done badly, they’re bad. If they are aware of their roots and pay homage to them, they can be really beautiful. There’s also the Italian art of stucco lustro, which has its own beauty, and started out as a way to use leftover marble chips. Mixed with plaster, it’s a gorgeous finish you can see in Baroque church columns. I’ve seen these twisted and painted to look like exotic marble, though the materials are lightweight and only decorative. Then there are “tapestries,” which, because it was cheaper to do, were just painted on walls.
    Fakery, often originating because it’s cheaper but becoming a valued art on its own, has centuries and centuries of history. I think you are too tied to “authentic” materials, maybe because of your modernist sensibility.

    • @MsPaprat
      @MsPaprat 8 днів тому +17

      This video is about DIY projects which are on social media very often and not about various forms of craftsmanship and artistry. He is exactly focusing in this video on cheap mainstream fakery.
      Also the point is that you can even have an honest material but if it used/placed out of context it is kitsch.

    • @Eloiseat6
      @Eloiseat6 7 днів тому +31

      @@MsPaprat this is my point, too. If it’s done badly, it’s just bad. But he’s saying more than that. He’s saying materials should be “authentic.” I’m saying the “inauthentic” can also be beautiful if done right. These diyers could use some of the art and craftsmanship history available. It would make their diys a whole lot better!

    • @janelte
      @janelte 7 днів тому +12

      I was coming here to say something similar - historically there are times when trickery is fashionable - but it IS also an issue of aesthetics. Techniques done by talented trades crafts people with years of training aren't the same as our well-meaning home botch jobs, and are usually done as part of an interior where the scale of the space, its other architectural features, and the painted or plaster effect all come together seamlessly to create a whole impression. And that might mimic the authentic crafts and techniques of another culture (China, India) or time. That said, I personally find the decorative effects pleasing only to the eye, and not at a deeper level. There is something about the weight, feel, and connection to its origins of natural materials or man-made ones well used, that pleases both my senses at a surface level, and something deeper.

    • @Qrtuop
      @Qrtuop 7 днів тому +2

      Yeah ok. That's not what he was talking about. Baroque looks worse than plain Romanic churches and that's because simplicity and authenticity is prettier than fakery, no matter the century.

    i wouldn’t put paneling in my own apartment but i feel like it’s totally fine for the inside of one’s apartment to not match the outside. when you’re inside the apartment you don’t see the outside of the building so i feel like it doesn’t really matter. for me the outside of my building is pretty ugly and i don’t see why i should design my space to match it.

    • @OnboardG1
      @OnboardG1 8 днів тому +8

      Yeah I really don’t agree with that line of thinking. If your aesthetic choice doesn’t align with the exterior of the building who cares? If it’s tasteful, uses quality materials and is coherent why not do it? You can’t do anything about the architecture but the interior design is all your space. I live in a 70s terrace house, do I need to be constrained to woodchip wallpaper and brown vinyl? Sure, don’t install fake beams that are obviously nonsense, but if you want to panel your 50’s bungalow up like a Victorian gentleman’s club, cool.

    • @Jo-in6xu

      exactly! It’s about being aware of the context of your house. I live in 20s apartment, which is not necessarily ‘my style’ but I enjoy working with the dimensions and restraints this space gives. It’s working with your space, instead of against it, to get a harmonious result.

    • @milkflys
      @milkflys 7 днів тому +1

      @@nadjak3410but then i care about how the interior looks with those interior elements ... not the actual exterior of the building. the architecture of your interior is something you should work with, yes, but that's not the same as making your apartment decor "authentic" to your building's aesthetic and context. there's plenty of character-lacking ugly plain buildings that work perfectly fine as a blank slate

    Here in Brazil ceramic floor tiles that "mimic" wood were REALLY popular, until vinyl floor came out. It's the worse thing you could try to use to imitate wood because of the grout, the shininess, the way the tiles are installed. I mean, it's not even a warm floor. There is nothing in it that resembles wood.

Especially some solutions that aren't just relying on bold/loud/colorful/vintage furniture. I’m struggling a bit with what to do in my home because I live in a suburban 90s home. I can’t afford to hire someone to do everything so I have to do some diy projects in order to update. I did a budget update on my kitchen recently and I went very classic. I did not epoxy my countertops or anything, luckily, 😂. I’ve got a little bit of character in my home and I refuse to remove it. I just want to bring it a little more into modern times while honoring the fact that it’s a traditional home. I thought crown and wall molding was traditional so I was thinking of adding it as I already have a chair rail in three major rooms in the house. But after watching this I’m wondering if I should just paint it to match the walls. I definitely want to do wallpaper in one area. Ugh, not sure what to do.

We have had many push heavily this wood-look fiber cement siding or wood-look tile flooring so much so you start second guessing your own feelings, but I know in my heart that it just is not the same. It's either wood being wood, tile being tile, cement being cement, or go home. At least for me. And I feel more confident self-validating myself again in that (with your help). Ok I get the “architectural context” thing … now what do we do when our home itself is kind of a modern imitation of an old style? Like the 1980s-1990s colonials especially popular all over the northeastern US. Not an actual charming old home but tries to borrow some of the features, especially on the exterior. I’m thinking I still don’t get a pass on the wall paneling I added 😆. But just not sure how to approach a space like that authentically.

    100% .. things have vibrations - all things, have an energy. When materials are used that cut corners, or fake appearances - the vibration of the cheaper material is still felt. We can use low cost materials if/when they are in appropriate context - but we can feel IT when it's inauthentic and used without consideration and care.

      I personally think the main focus on *easthetics* is part of the problem: a lot of these diy's are meant to look good on photo or video, but never mimick the actual living-experience of the real thing. We deserve to live with things that are actually nice to touch/use and not just look nice in a photo you post on social media. In the end you are living in your space, so let's find renter-friendly / budget-friendly diy's that actually deliver on that too.
      To me a lot of these influencer-led DIY-project are like P*rn: meant to look good, not feel good.

    I feel like fake wood products have become so popular because people associate manmade materials like plywood, painted wood, or plastic with cheapness. But imo those types of materials can actually be used really successfully if they are well-designed, well-built products. But social media tells folks that in order for your house to be "nice" it needs to be filled with wood, marble, etc. And it needs to be in whatever the current "trendy"/popular style is. So furniture manufacturers create the cheapest furniture possible in the trendy style, and then when people are over it they throw the fake wood in the trash and buy a new one 😅

    I’ve been thinking a lot about your philosophy on authenticity in materials, and how to apply it to my suburban American ranch house. What I’ve come to is that sometimes “inauthentic materials” are the most authentic option. For example, in my closets, I have clear acrylic drawers from Walmart (I’ve decided that I can buy plastic at Walmart; it’s their authentic material). I have several IKEA Kallax units and I prefer the ones that are the white veneer. It’s just a Kallax, it’s not MCM vintage. And I was thinking about doing the decorative wall panel things, but I had your voice in my head whispering about authenticity. What is authentic to my 1968 ranch is paneling. Not beadboard, not shiplap, not adhesive decorative rectangles, but actual paneling. So I’m going to fill in the lower register in my dining room and hallway, and paint it white to make it modern. Sheet vinyl and linoleum are authentic choices for my kitchen floor, as long as they aren’t trying to look like wood against the original hardwood in the living room. I’m trying to make decisions like this throughout the house - authentic to my modern eclectic minimalism and also authentic to this southern, semi-rural, getting more city by the day, late 60’s ranch. It’s a fun challenge.

  • @rockshot100

    Noah, I had to get vinyl planks so I could do the whole house with the same floor, kitchen and baths included. I could only afford one room of solid wood. I made sure I got a pattern that didn't try to look like real wood. It looks like a barn floor that has been painted a couple of times, but some wore off. Most of it is covered with area rugs, so very little it visible. Do I get a pass? The ones that look like fine walnut or cherry are the worst. This is the only way I could avoid this at the time.
    BTW, even the wood inserts for mullions are just as bad.

    Short but so sweet! Thanks for taking the time to post this video. I absolutely agree with the principle of authenticity. Unfortunately I don't have the budget to create just what I want (eg rip out ugly moldings). My main strategy is to do what I can to make the ugly recede and to focus on art and furnishings. I'd be interested to hear what diy projects you approve of and/or what you have tried. (eg. I have an ugly kitchen)

    This helped me make a decision. I own a beautiful mid-century ski chalet with a “conversation area” under a loft and surrounding an open fireplace. All beautiful teak walls, much like one of the photos in this video. At some point, someone decided to paint the ceiling of the conversation area, and later, someone wanted it to be wood and painted it to look like wood. Argh. I’m going to see if I can strip it, but doubt if that will work. Instead, I’ll accept it for what it is and paint it a dark color. The fake wood paint is on my nerves.

    I have one question about the vinyl floors, as someone who recently moved into a new place and has to redo the floor for my bedroom: what do you suggest as an affordable option for floors, instead of vinyl/laminate? We moved into a beautiful apartment in berlin with real wood plank floors in the living room and hallway and tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. We don’t have the budget for real wood flooring. I thought trying to match the real wood planks with vinyl flooring would be a good idea instead of introducing a whole new floor type. I also hate carpet flooring…. Really a bit lost here, I don’t wanna ruin my home and we need to put a new floor in in the next couple weeks :(

      True linoleum / marmoleum (not vinyl) can actually make a really fun statement if you do it well, otherwise I'd suggest looking for wood flooring secondhand. I found 300 sq ft once for 33 cents per square foot, and I've also seen some for free. Also, consider searching for "engineered hardwood" instead of solid hardwood. It's basically like cheaper plywood underneath with a thick veneer of pretty wood on top, which makes it cheaper & also less prone to expanding & contracting with weather changes.

      Es gibt doch tolle, natürliche Materialien wie Kork oder Linoleum. Bei Linoleum kannst du dir sogar die Farbe aussuchen. Ist natürlich teurer als PVC.

    There are a lot of hand-drawn fake marble decorations in Portugese palaces though, like, pillars and crown mouldings. But I think those are alright...maybe because the wood and paint are worn and therefore there is texture.

    I live in an 1863 house rented from the council in London. It used to have proper sash windows with a single munting divider. When they had to replace them they did a really bad job and used white pvc double glazing sash windows with a fake plastic munting between the sheets of glass. It looks so crap, they should’ve just left them plain.
    (I can’t believe the word is munting’, that means stinking in the uk.

    Totally disagree on the wall paneling. Granted some of the modern interpretations (with the weird angles and shapes) are terrible. But if you live in an even somewhat traditional home, like I do, I think it looks great. All the photos you chose looked classy and timeless to me.

    I work in Disneyland, and spent many years on Main Street, USA, and I am pretty sure that every window muntin and multi light window is real. the lands are mostly themed towards the past, and much of it was built from scratch in the 1950s. my locations have heavy wood windows with multiple lights! they also have a lot of fake wood grain… in the victorian era, it was extremely common to paint wood trim all a darker wood grain. for instance, painting pine to look like oak. it’s common in the spaces where i worked that were set in 1906

But I, like the rest of the comment section want you to do a video on what else to do?? My 2bd townhouse was constructed in early 2000's Sydney and has NO adornment or architectural details and I'm curious how you would design this type of place while achieving a sense of warmth, cosiness and playfulness.

    Agree agree and well some folks don't care. Add to your vlog, why do people hate the natural color of wood? Yes I have seen many say they don't like the color thinking it was stained orange or yellow when it is the natural color of aged wood, some turn to a soft yellow as maple, or has an orange cast, Douglas fir, or mahogany a deep Burgundy . So many DIYers then pickle or bleach the wood to look "old" Or they paint it and then draw wood grains over it. Where is the head shake emoji?

    I agree with you. You care about material use. Real material use. Work for a wood or stone distributor that works globally. So you can help the industry source well and you understand the supply chian of real materials. This is why my grandparents saved real metal, real wood and real glass. Pretty soon we won't be using real metal for cooking, spoons, knives or stoves anymore. It's that bad. I hope you work for a supplier of wooden furniture.

  • @zachpw

    99% of new construction uses vinyl windows with fake muntins in between the two panes of glass. Really not a fan of them. I’m slightly more ok with the higher end option of having wood muntins applied on the outer surface of the glass on both the inside and outside of the house (Andersen makes windows like this, for instance). It’s still fake though. There’s not really a way to have a combination of an affordable window, a highly efficient window, and an authentically constructed multi pane window.

    Unless your home was built before 1930, you shouldn't have any windows with muntins. The 1920s was the last decade in which true divided light windows were a thing. Same goes for crown molding.

    I live near a very old church (11th or 12th century) in France so there are rules and one of them is I have to put fake woods on my windows if I change them (and I need to change one). I think it is totally absurd and our ancestors would laugh at us if they saw us making those absurdities.
    Else,for fake materials, first rule for me is : if when I touch it, it does not feel like the real thing, absolutely NO WAY.
    I don't understand this fake wood tiles trend. Sometimes it looks good but it never ever feels good.
    For my terrasse, due to technical reasons, I had no choice but fake wood or fake stone. I chose stone. It looks quite amazing and most of all, when I walk on it, it FEELS like stone.
    I also hate fake trees but as I am a plant killer, I plan to DIY a fake paper tree. For me, that's good because it is more like a sculpture.
    I don't know how to say it in English. I think it is fine to "imitate" real materials if you don't really try to make it look like the real material. If you totally assume it is fake. A bit like the Fouquet's of the architect Edouard François in Paris. It imitates haussmannian architecture with kind of a sense of humor. When on the other hand, I hate neo-hausmannian architecture.
    On the other hand, just to nuance what I say, we must remember that haussmannian buildings were hated back when they were built because it was accused of neo-classism. The same critic we make now to neo-hausmannian... And now, we love them! Hahaha!

    It can be seen from your approach that you have no experience in the profession.
    It can also be seen that you studied architecture and that you have ideals in it as well as the fact that you are not a student of design or art and that you lack that in your views on the approach to interior design.A good architect or interior designer should be more of an artist and less of a civil engineer.I don't have any bad intentions, I just want to give you constructive criticism as a senior colleague.🙂

    What good does it do anyone to shame people who dont have the money to buy authentic real expensive things? You are trying to police good taste. Its like you are a socialist who takes it upon himself to decide how to redistribute the wealth. When I was younger yes I hated fake wood paneling and the harsh seventies colors. Yes I cringe at dishonest things. Just suppose that you as an artist
    And lover of beauty are horrified at some art and wish to impose your values on others. Beauty proportion and good design are never really solidified in an artist. You discover beauty as you paint and live. Every new movement in art happened when some poor slob
    Decided to break the rules of good taste. Good taste is a talent and also a curse but you cannot legislate good taste in interior design.
    If you are lucky enough to be able to live tastefully dont mock poor those fools who dont have your insight.
    Magic is important and not often in good taste. How can you cringe at some other persons choice? You are sensitive visually and I am cursed that way also. When I was younger the images I saw in wood paneling knotts and whorls gave me nightmares.
    When you try to impose your good taste on others you actually experience less visually.
    Yes there are too many people in toupes and false eyelashes.and people do tend to think in groups.but again you cant police visual expression.
    I find it disconcerting and am embarressed at influencers who make out or act seductive with the camera as you do because that behavior is fake. Because you dont know me and I find it cringe when you say you love me. There is also the tendancy for u tubers to ask for their viewers opinions . Mob rule lol.
    I loveed it when you made me see post modernism in a new light. That is good. You gave reasons and I learned something new.
    But please dont be a karen about interior design. Good taste changes like fashion and you cant fence it in. Sincerely an old fat karen

    All of your videos preach "authentic" materials while you proselytize from a bare room without any of the decor you preach about. Nice to have "high" opinions about design, but obviously, you're unable to afford to purchase what you preach about. There are many of us who are completely happy with our "badly" designed homes because they are comfortable despite being decorated with less than Noah Daniel approved contents. And, OMG!!!, there are people who compliment us on our "poor" taste.
    Please get real Mr. Daniel and show us your own decorated living space instead of living in the theoretical world. Thank you. In the mean time, I'm hitting the "Do not recommend this channel" button to save myself the frustration of listening to someone who judges others. The emperor is naked and doesn't realize it.
