Developed and published by Team 17 in 1993
Back during the heyday of the Amiga computer, Team 17 was one of the most talented and celebrated development studios producing games for the platform. Having had critical success with the Alien Breed games, the team turned their hand to the platform genre, just as many others had done, presumably in an effort to emulate the runaway success of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog.
The game also marks a period in games development where studios and publishers had started to include product placement and advertising in their games. Big name brands including Penguin biscuits, Quavers and 7 Up were all keen to get their products before a captive audience. Team 17 struck a deal with Lucozade to promote the notoriously sugary (yet undeniably delicious) fizzy drink in their game, even going so far as to make it the source of the main character's powers.
The game's story is told through a rather lavish (for the time) animated introduction, created by artist Eric Schwartz and occupying an entire floppy disk. It tells the age old tale of a handsome prince turned into an ugly frog by a wicked witch, who kidnaps his betrothed and spirits her away to a dark castle in a distant land.
The game is divided into six separate worlds, each comprising four levels. The objective of each level is to collect enough gold coins to open the exit and progress to the next stage. The number of coins required increases as the game progresses, with less lying around in the open and more hidden in secret areas, forcing the player to look for false walls and hidden entrances in the scenery.
Don't let the cutesy graphics fool you - this is a game with a core of diamond-encrusted steel! Each of the game's levels is covered in spikes, pits and all other manner of traps that will turn our amphibian chum to paste in an instant. Certain enemies can be defeated by jumping on their heads, or hitting them with your trusty Destructo-Spud. However, more powerful enemies cannot be defeated by any means and must simply avoided, although it's not always clear which enemies are invincible and those that aren't.
At the end of each level, the player can choose to gamble their high score in turn for the chance to win a password code in a fruit machine-themed bonus game, allowing them to continue the game from the last completed level should lady luck be on their side.
It has to be said that the game really is quite a technical achievement. Not only are the graphics of high quality, but the game manages to maintain a rock solid 50 frames per second on a PAL machine without any hint of slow down, even on a basic A500.
For me, however, the game's stand-out feature has to be the audio. Not only is Allister Brimble's music outstanding, it's difficult to believe that digital audio of this quality is being produced by a consumer home computer first launched in 1985. The opening theme tune and world 1 music with various vocal ribbits and croak samples is completely in keeping with the game's cartoon theme and is among some of the best to ever grace the system.
Superfrog is undoubtedly one of the Amiga's finest platform games and a shining example of what the machine was capable of. Fans of the genre, especially those enjoy a touch challenge will be sure to enjoy every moment that the game has to offer.

One of the greatest Amiga Games ever.
Disagree. The best. And my 1st.
I agree...
Kapitalna gra
Hired Guns was my favourite 🙃
It really is. Love it.
The music in this game was outstanding!
I agree...
The chorus of frogs in the background
loved the music still do!!
Love it
Bought this game to the A500 for my , then , 6 year old son in the 90’s. Today he is 29 and still plays it regularly on an emulator. So am I. I’m 53. To me , that the tell-tale of a wellcrafted , good game that is pure fun to play.
Piece of cake, I was needing emulator for older Colin McRea etc...
I used to play superfrog with my brother in the 90's. Good times. What memories!
@@francescoscriva1744 : Agreed ! Now I’ll turn 59 in July , but I still enjoy Superfrog , AND 30+ other Amiga500 games. It’s not that I stubbornly hang on by nostalgia , because I’ve played new games all along , but some of those games were so well crafted. The hardware limitations made the programmers go above and beyond.
My childhood 🥰 loved this game so much!!
Love the game. Nearly 30 years on and still remember every level. It’s Tattooed somewhere in my sub-conscience
Superfrog...one of the best games I've played on my good old Amiga 500! Love it! ❤️ Great music too!
Times of my childhood... Ahhh the best ever :D
My first computer was Atari, I thought for instance about Zorro, such a something, same scenario etc, within current 3D, for me awesome, same as for instance Prehistoric 4 or even old Decathlon etc...
Eric Schwartz, the one man Disney of Amiga.
Used to play this all the time as a kid, thank you for the nostalgia trip!
Great game of my childhood

So many memories connected to this game. Would have a beer and play for hours when it first came out.
Holy ___... I haven't seen or thought of this game in about 25 years or something.
This brings back so many memories.
I can still remember the 1st level theme tune after all these years such a great game and soundtrack!
I can still remember passwords to levels 6.1 and 6.4, after about 25 years hahaha
That music starting at 1:19:49 is so catchy it begs to be in dance remix or sampled in hip hop.
Not exactly what you are asking, but we have this straight from the composer: allisterbrimble.bandcamp.com/album/the-amiga-works
It was my favorite one from this game.
I've played this game a lot on my Amiga 500. I like the sounds too
OMG!! It was AHHHHMAZING! Thanks so much for sharing
You're welcome 😊
For years I never really cared for platform type games when I had the Amiga A1200, I was into Pinball Dreams but this one was the only one I properly got into and completed it.
Music is anwsome !!!
I remember all the secrets after 30 years...
Köszönöm a feltöltést. Nagyjából 25 évvel ezelőtt a gyermekeimnek volt Amigája. Nagyon szerettük ezt a játékot. Nagyon jó volt most, ennyi év távlatából végig nézni. Kellemes emlékeket idézett fel!
thanks for this video. It's super comforting. That game is my childhood.
Nostalgia
Yep another amazing game on Amiga. Team 17 had a great smooth scrolling graphic engine. Nice video. Thx.
Was there a CD32 release of this ever? But it is odd there was never a console port, would have been great on the Mega Drive.
A CD32 version exists, but I think it's pretty much identical to the OCS/ECS original. Sadly, a common theme with a lot of CD32 titles.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Ah, thanks for the info. That's a shame, not even a properly animated FMV intro or something?
@@Larry feeeddu
Superfrog HD for PS3.
@@Larry Nope, just a slap-in lazy port of Superfrog with other demos that they can fit onto a CD. But... Helllllloooooooo you!
Class! took me ages to complete it, but have done since loads of times, never knew wings were essential
This was awesome! ☺️
Be sure to check out my full review of the game @ www.vintageisthenewold.com/retro-revisited-we-look-back-at-team-17s-superfrog-and-find-an-amiga-classic-still-fizzing-with-energy/
Amazing game, nice job
I thought the art style in the intro animation looked familiar, then I looked it up. Eric Schwartz animated it! Makes sense since he did some other Amiga animations on the side back then and I know his art style from ANYWHERE. Pure 90s furry content right there.
dont make em like that no more ,my kids loved it ,daughter started on pacman at age 2,you knew she ate a ghost still remember the giggles and its been 35 years
This seriously needs to be remade!
it has already happened in 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS by Team 17. It has new levels to unlock original levels. it is called Superfrog HD.
There is nothing I like about superfrog HD. The original is the best
That game was awesome!
Te gek, dit spelletje had ik ook. Leuk om te zien!
I used to love this game! :) Definitely one of the Amiga's best games. I've just seen a 1998 PC game called Jack Jackrabbit which reminded me a lot of Superfrog.
You mean Jazz Jackrabbit 2? The first Jazz Jackrabbit was made in PC in 1994 and yes, it does take a play book out of Superfrog, Sonic The Hedgehog and many other arcade platformers out there.
Actually, the whole artistic aspect of Jazz Jackrabbit holds somewhat of a relation with the Amiga. The most notorious example that comes to mind is Andrew Sega (aka Necros), who was into the amiga demoscene musical acts and later did the soundtrack for that game as well as Unreal/Unreal Tournament 99'.
I love this game
superfrog , zool , Addams Family, Lethal Weapon , Robocod.... those platform days 🥰
Good old times.. Amiga forever.
Timeless classic!
Back in the 90s I saw such a longplay on cable tv 😀 always wanted to play this game))
i love this game
Oh man ^^ I loved that game! Good memories!
Next to "Cannon Fodder" and "Son of Chuck" it's my favorite Amiga game :D Awww, my childhood
My first and most favourite game on my Amiga 600. Ooohhh...90's. Now I'm 43.
Play new Superfrog HD on PC! Awesome!!!
Team 17 knew how to make games
It’s worth noting the huge and fast-scrolling maps this game has. I wonder what tricks they used to make it all work.
The Amiga 500 was one of the first computers to have special graphics-enhancing chips, and even though the Atari ST had the same
CPU then games looked worse, see game comparison.

It's a Slippy, it's a Flippy, It's Superfrog!
wonderful Game, i loved this on my Amiga the same for Rodland and Super Wonderboy at Monsterland.
That old times!
1 of best games from my amiga childhood :)
I loved tha tgame as a kid !
Always had problems with the Pyramid levels.
The number of nasty traps was insane.
Great video! How many times did you have to play this game to go without dying? Well done 👏👍🏻
A great game, one of my farourite in old good Amiga times. Nicely played with all secrets revealed. But I think the player used a trainer to turn off collision with thorns that do instant kill.
i've played and completed this more than i should have
Classic
Team 17 were an incredible Amiga developer until Worms. Yes Worms was great but that's where they stopped and rested on their laurels.
A crying shame.
Yeah, they basically quit making other games, and just pumped out Worms sequel after Worms sequel.
realised too, only apples in world 6 of the fruit!
You know, I really want to play this myself at some point. Probably even complete the whole game :).
Very few European platform games came close to the quality, beauty and playability of the "Super Mario" series!, (Nintendo
8-bit), this was one of them, C64's "Mayheim in Monsterland" was also another one of the same level!
my CLASSIC
C'est quand qu'il va sortir sur la Nintendo Switch et la PS4 ?? Une merveille pareil mérite un remake et mieux encore, avoir remake ET la version original, tout comme ils ont fais pour le jeu Alex Kidd ! :)
I didn't know that all those years god damnit
Una bella grafica !
1:54:59 I remember seeing this bit in a magazine...
It’s very weird how the trees watch you
Its a sonic clone but its a good one...the best two games I have ever played on the Amiga500 are Moonstone and Another World... Another World...made completely in vector polygons and with the use of rotoscope techniques by Eric Chahi... is the best game of all time...a masterpiece.
Still play to date! Never beat old games👍
çocukluğumun oyunu. Ve Antik Mısırı sevdiren oyunlardan birisi daha kendisi.
This one was well mede ❤
I thought he was going to motorboat her at the end
1990 lar da ne oynadım bu oyunu çok güzeldi hala güzel şimdi ki bir çok oyundan bile hala güzel :)
I dont think anybody who hasn't played it has the faintest idea about how great this game was on the Amiga.
I remember this had 7/8 discs with it, lol. I used to sit down in my brothers room, put on that weird Deep Forrest album (idk why) and play this for hours. I can't even remember if I clocked it, lol? Didn't really matter. Bubble Bobble, Superfrog, and Wonderboy were my fav games... And also this one game I can't ever remember the name of where you're like a little dragon and you complete a lvl by getting to the top of a castle/tower? For some reason I always thought it was called Nebula, but I don't think it is?!
Świetna gra.💪👀
Super
They call him ugly, But, He is cute to be honest.
(Who even thought of this cliche?)
Had this as a kid but it would crash on one on one of the levels so never got to see da ending
Oh man this game is soo great. Hey I hope it's OK that I use the Egypt part of this video for a remix I'm making. I'll post links to this video and your channel ^^
best ending ever
i remember. .
@37:49
The music sounds like Solomon's Key
1:55:00 what's that? an inside joke?
I remember seeing this as a kid I was thinking there is a way to use that pencil
Yep, it was supposed to be a "not finished map edge" :)
As of 03/2021 I wonder if SuperFrog will also be fortunate to profit being an NFT Art token? James Pond, Manic Miner and the 100s of other Amiga Game characters.

team 17 great company sensible soccer superfrog project x etc etc i remember play these games with james pond rick dangerous etc etc shadow of the beast amiga best machine game ever so many great games beyond of their time far beyond even ps 4 would jealous of
I was bullied badly as a kid, beaten everytime I went out so I didn't, I didn't need to because we had an amiga 500, then a mastersystem, megadrive and a Packard Bell pc 😅😅
I remember people saying it was a sonic copycat. The game is completely different than sonic games. Actually it was really great platformer with excellent graphics and sound for it's time. You better forget about that stupid HD remake nobody needed and play it on Amiga emulator with a gamepad.
i want to use it on windows if anybody knows how to please?
The last world with autofire. :P
has anyone played Superfrog HD that came out in 2014?
Dissapeared from the stores without a trace. Really disappointed I never got to try it
@@vickysimpson3547 You lost nothing. No original sounds, no original music, no original model. I was so pissed off.
Team 17 😍😍😍
back when developers still cared and actually had some imagination and where pushing boundaries nowadays well you don't have to lay a game it plays itself and you are just a third party, there are some exception but still the golden age of discovery and development unfortunately have gone now everyone just copies everyone else. so sad, but i am glad i had a a600 and 1200 and cd32 so many great times playing games like this, sensible soccer, settler the original and so many many many more the pile of cu amiga and power mage, my dad even used to game with me play Jack Nicholas gold tour was so cool lol. ty for the vid dude keep it up :-) i just installed antarcade from epic store and so many retro games lol
lok 7 years ago .. over thirty years ago @michelle cant fight the past.
it be passed
It also was released on PS3, and thank god it had unlockable original levels ad music, new levels, music and intro sucked there.
I saw someone playing this at Comic Con.
The author of Sabrina Online worked on this?
I cant bye or find the PC version.....:(
If played this with 6 years and loved it. As i got 12 years i got a playstation and the game Raymand. It felt like a poor version of superfrog.
*Raymand*
it can be best amiga game
Where are more fruits in world 1-2?
