Developed by Magnetic Fields and published by Gremlin Graphics in 1991
Here we have one of the best 2d racing games of it's generation. That's probably a very subjective opening statement, but there's no denying that it was a superb game and the magazine review scores proved it. Even though it was ported to other platforms the Amiga was definitely the best.
I never liked the circuit-based racing from the first game and Lostus III was alright, but this is best of the series in my opinion.
Lotus 2 is pure point-to-point racing against the clock with the goal to make each checkpoint before the timer runs out. Naturally, other cars and obstacles make your task even more difficult, particularly since the other cars drift back and forth across the road just to make overtaking a pain.
Each stage alternates between driving the newly added Lotus Elan and the Lotus Esprit Turbo. The only appreciable difference is the car graphics and the fact that the Elan is slower, although the Elan stages tend to be harder due to much narrower roads.
On the subject of difficulty, this is absolutely hard as nails...made of diamonds...from Newcastle!! I only ever played this with a trainer enabled to give infinite time back on my real Amiga and I never appreciated just how tight the time limit on each level is; you really cannot afford to mess up. The marsh level deserves special mention since green orbs that grant extra time suddenly start appearing and you simply must pick them up to stand a chance of beating the level.
Shaun Southern coded this little beauty and the game engine is very fast and the graphics by Andrew Morris look great. The sheer insanity of the storm level turbo pick-up boggles the mind.
Of course, one cannot play Lotus without mentioning THAT title music...it still sounds amazing, even today! The main title credits the music to Imaginitec Design, but Lemonamiga.com credits Barry Leitch for the music; this wouldn't be surprising considering he did a lot of work for Gremlin.
This wouldn't be a description without a quick moan about certain aspects of the game. I've already mentioned the extremely tight time limits and the car handling is a tad sluggish, which makes quick cornering very hard on some of the faster courses; the storm course will punish you with failure if you collide with any scenery or fail to collect all of the turbos.
And yes, I did manage to drive under one of the lorries on the motorway stage...
This is a real Amiga classic.

This feeling, when time run out, but the car continued rolling over the finish line.
That opening music is a time machine.
Came here fromt the composers youtube channel and this is the first comment I see. The dude knew how to make a dope racing game sound track.
One of the best
Memories of playing this split screen with my childhood friend.., good times
Same, all nights
This game DEMANDED near perfection to beat even from stage 1. Probably one of the hardest racing games I've ever played.
That intro music ! So far ahead of its time back then. It was amazing
Man, love those days.
The UK actually made tons of good games for the Amiga back then, same with the french and germans. I don't know about you folks but i actually enjoyed those older games way more than all the flashy 3D shit that comes out these days.
We didn't have internet, we had the fucking supermarket back then lol
No we had your Dad's mate who knew a bloke selling pirated floppies from his car boot! Blue Brothers, Alien Breed, Base Jumpers, Lemmings, etc. etc. At least that was the case for me anyway...
and free floppy for America online that you could copy over ......lol.........@@sawleyram7405
Trouble is nowadays games developers care more about making it look pretty and pushing their warped political agendas rather than actually just making a good game.
I remember playing this on my dads pc back in the day when i was about 5 or maybe younger. Remember it was summer and my brother and I hopped on it in the morning a short while before we all were about to head off to the beach for the day. Good memories.
There was a special magic to games back then. You could tell they were made with real love.
I cannot play xbox one anymore. These new games dont do it for me.
That music!!!!!!!! Memory refreshed!!!!!
“Rather than repeat ourselves,
we moved away from the pit-stop-
style of play to a point-to-point
race, a different kind of challenge.
But we needed something unique.
What set us apart were the effects
- fog, night time, storm. I can still
remember coming up with the idea
for the fog, hoping it would work and
giving Shaun the graphics to put in
the game. We looked at the screen
open-mouthed and then at each other
smiling. We had our USP and Lotus
would go on to be the most successful
game in Gremlin’s history.”
-- Andrew Morris (graphic artist and game designer - Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Amiga)
40:24 - there you have Top Gear theme song in its earliest beginnings
Great, I was impressed. Those are the same developers?
@@fefraga2008 Nope, but it's the man himself, Barry Leitch, Top Gear's music composer.
@@fefraga2008 Adding to the previous comment, in actuality the developers of Top Gear were the publishers of the Lotus series, Gremlin Graphics, hence the use of the first Lotus game (Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge) engine in the first Top Gear game.
I remember having Commodore 64 and then seeing this game on Amiga at my friend’s house. I could not believe it was happening. I wanted Amiga next day. But it took probably another year.
My child Time 1992... 25 years later I miss the time.. Love that
how i loved playing this game ... watching this brings back memories of the golden years
The 90"s was an incredable time with the amiga... Remember having X-COPY so you could copy all the cracked games, must of had over a 100 games,, great times
truth teller same mate had a600 used to copy n swap games loved my amiga wish still had it 😉
The anti-piracy subliminal message in this game clearly didn't work on you then! :D
Also we were young and stuff!
THAT MUSIC!!!!!!! Best music of any computer game.
At that time a truely precious gem! Alfter all the years I really feel like back in time! Thank you. I remember letting this game run on the amiga just to listen to the music for hours.
Once I heard the intro music: Nostalgia for Amiga 500 gaming :-)
The life is a series of stations , lotus 2 remind me of good happy stations with no responsibilities and easy life
Best days of my life... I used to plug the audio outs into the aux of my family stereo with the good old big bulky speakers while also playing music on a cassette player (Franco Battiato - Cuccuruccucù Paloma on the first stage)... It felt really amazing
* Update 22/04/2019 *
New recording of the game at 1440p available here: ua-cam.com/video/oLQiwjGrEjE/v-deo.html
SKID ROW NEVER DIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turpentine!
I still remember some of the cheat codes! TWILIGHT for night time and PEA SOUP for fog. I don’t remember what I did last week….
That music ... Memories !!
I played this on Amiga 600, back in 1993 or 1994.. and I remember the cry "YiiiHaa!!" when you go above a Truck! Thanks for bringing me back those memories
Wow! I had this game in my Amiga back in 1990's! :D
It was really awesome and of course i liked it more than the classic OutRun. I remembered the courses because i also managed to finish all of them!
Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for commenting - glad you enjoyed it :)
The final stage was owned! great play. Thank you for the uplaod
The opening music is still amazing. In 1991 and also in 2024 😍 Sounds like the early 90's.
I really loved that game as a child and I was good at it. Now I recalled it when I was "trying" to drive in Cyberpunk :D
"CHECKPOINT"
This brings back memories. I had my Amiga hooked up to my stereo and recorded the tunes from this and other games (and some demos) on a cassette tape so I could listen to it on my Walkman.
Najlepsza ściganka w jaką grałem na Amidze!
MARTINEZ MARTIN Jeszcze Jaguar XJ220 był fajny a może nawet i lepszy.
A melody has been buzzing through my head for 20 years.
After starting this game yesterday i realized that it is the melody of the "desert" track *lol*
I love how they mix the chirping of birds in the "nature" track.
Amazing game.
The opening music is fire 🔥🔥🔥
This was the greatest game of its kind.
I had such great fun playing this as a child!
I used to absolutely love this game. Also Supercars 2 was quality!
Supercars 2 was good. So was skidmarks!
@@spleencheesemonkey Skidmarks! Yes, I forgot about that game. Quality! If I remember, there was also a game called Nitro 2. That was one of my first games when I bought my Amiga.
that opening music puts most classical music to shame...
Couldn't agree more!
Paul Rivett It's a great tune but let's not get too carried away...
@@AlexVideoPlayer No Alex, we insist! It is the absolute best!
Legit just came on here to listen to the music...
@@willb5590 me too, I remember cranking it up as a kid too!
Xtra time! Xtra time! Xtra time! Congratulation! haha, i remember this game for the number of time i finished the line with the time being up.
I barely remember the fact that it didn't have music on it.
That fog course used to do my head in!!! It went on forever and probably only completed it 1 in 3 attempts! I knew when I was nearly there because of those oil slicks, then you had the frigging sound of the timer ticking and then coming to a stop about 1ft from the finish line!! Such great times! 😂
I love sport cars / circuits thanks to this game!
PASSWORD --- TWILIGHT
DEICIDE !!!!!
Satharel Father Bakers
E BOW final pass
So many memories! The fog course intro music is hilarious
i loved this game and especially the music😊
Absolutely loved this game!
IL GIOCO PIÙ BELLO CHE AVEVANO FATTO LOTUS TURBO CHALLENGE PER AMIGA 500 🔝🇮🇹
Very good graphics and music and playability
So did I ;) It took quite a few attempts before I was able to squeeze over the line. I always played with the cheats enabled on my real Amiga so I never appreciated just how tight the time limits are.
I remember playing it all day long. Some years later (late 90's?) a friend and I went to a motor show. I don't remember the brand but one car manufacturer had this game recoded to his car model and had placed two real cars in front of a huge screen and you could play the game by using the cars controls. Precious memories and lot's of experience .. we blasted the current highscore and held it for the entire exhibition :D
Awesome - a real trip down memory lane! Great tunes too
damn I always love the marsh course picture and I wish I could live there.
Thank you kkbigal for this time machine... I was kid once more !
Track Descriptions:
Forest:
An easy track with gentle curves and only a small number of obstacles on the road
Night:
Limited visibility with a faster car, tunnels and no obstacles on the road
Fog:
Limited visibility on narrow road with oil slicks on the road, trouble overtaking and a blind corner; watch out for the Chevrons on that one corner however!
Snow:
A slippery and wide track with lots of Ice Slicks and Snow Drifts, snow is also getting deeper on the road as you race
Desert:
A long track with lots of obstacles on a Sandy road and some very tight corners that will throw you off
Motorway:
A very wide road with oncoming traffic on the other side, also beware of passing trucks
Marsh:
A wet and narrow road with lots of Oil Slicks, puddles and flooded roads, keep an eye out for those extra times orbs!
Storm:
A fast and very hard course with lots of Rocks on the road for some serious salmon action and don’t forget about those Turbo orbs!!
This is what makes me wish i still had my Amiga 500+
I love you! From Napoli (ITA)
Mansell was the code I remember. Also amazing from 1991 to 1997 we'd get from this to Gran Turismo graphics. Quite a leap
So that's where Lotus: Ultimate Challenge for DOS came out! I loved that game, still love it.
Perfect game. I remember how do we play. Game music is perfect too. I feel to make speed when i install this music to car.
had this for megadrive best tunes ever!!!!
Moja ukochana gra💖😍😍
First seconds give me chills.
Congratulations!
After playing this as a kid, i always wanted a Lotus one day - but I drive a minivan now
The moment the "Turbo" sets in, me and my cousin used to think we are the kings of the world xD
memories is backkk !
So geil der Intro Sound ;)
The music was amazing . The dedicated Paula audio chip coupled with chip Ram was able to produce amazing sound difficult to beat to this day.
This audio's great.
Damn that animation and the Terminator font 😍
Grew up playing this game with all the different levels and the passwords for each one 👍👍👍👍
So happy I still have my old Amiga and this game. It actually looked better on old televisions of the day than now in HD because there the low resolution was harder to see than now. Still looks ok in HD though for it´s time.
Man I miss this game. And I still have it and many other Amiga games with my old Amiga 500. Just hope it still works.
If it doesn't work like it happened with our Amiga 500 in 1997, there is still an emulator to play all those games, WinUAE. I discovered it in late 2009 and I'm thankful I still can play all those Amiga games today!
Oh how I loved it. ;) Good old times.
Was amazed by this game coming from a speccy +2 played it and jag 220 with cousin 👍
the third level (pea soup) was incredibly hard.
I always had the feeling, that every second level (nichgt, snow, motorway) was easy and the odd levels were hard (forest, fog, desert, marsh).
And storm was brutal.
The soundtrack for this game is still awesome!
Ahh, the memories :) - Although I had it on th Atari ST, but still; misspent childhood being a geek with this and a few other classics like sensible soccer :)
Those were the days!
From 35:30 till the end of that course it's the most difficult part of the game...
What emulator I need to play this and where can I get the ROM ? Anyone can help ?
this intro.......... love it !
The ending music os the same used in TOPGEAR 1 (SNES) Intro!
Loved this game in the 90s wish they could put it on iOS I would definitely buy it so addictive and competitive thanks for uploading this brings back good memories;)
+ste_hwly They would have to get permission from the original game-makers *and* the Lotus Cars company first, but this would be a great game to revisit on iOS. _Lotus Turbo Challenge 2_ was definitely the best of the three _Lotus_ games, and connecting two Amigas with a null-modem cable and having simultaneous four-player action was just the best!
Bravissimo !
If there are legendary games of the 90's, this is one of it. It's even better as it's sequel, although Lotus III is bigger and combines both game stiles (lotus I&II) The genesis/megadrive version sucks in music and grafics, but the racing speed is still top and the gameplay is fairly good ported. Lotus Turbo Challenge II for Amiga is my legendary racing game.
This opening song is unbelievable. :] What a amazing game.
That music! :O Such a good game!
I was really good in this game.. could almost drive the first course with a blindfold.. I remember that a friend of mine got some beers before going out one weekend..and played this.. after a few beers i crashed in the first turn LOL
WOW,what an improvement over RECS😎😎😎I’m getting this next week😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
My ferst game
❤ So much memories...
Holy crap, I played this at grandma's house when I was 6 years old. :)
Ah man it’s taking me back! Desert Strike was so fucking hard though
Love music.
Love the intro music! Though, the game never memorized me that much. Stunt Car Racer was more my thing. I know: They're not really comparable.
One stick and One button Is All we need ✌️
oh my god, this game was my nightmare. I had never passed 3rd ( misty ) episode. Every time we were strarting from the begining.
OMG... Im Crying.. it so epic
One of the best tracks ever for sure - try listening to the Atari ST version for comparison...then thank yourself you owned an Amiga :D
Too bad the ST only had a GI AY-3-8913 only able to produce square waves. This only feature drove me away from ST when I wanted something more beefy than my C64
yea!!!!! i did it! Found on Imagetic Design! Old school!
No Internet, but the Neighbours kids and I:
Just yesterday or was it hell longer and more than 20 years ago on summer days we played soccer, which I didn´t really understand and on winter days we played this which I really didn´t understand either, because I was 5 years old.
that tune is proper petrolhead tune
Great game, next to 30 other amiga 500 games I still play this nowadays, like today with WinUAE.
But it always makes me sad that the yellow Lotus cars only are in the Desert Course and that you can't change your colour, I so want to play this game as a yellow Lotus. Is there a trick to do that?
Also I still know all those passwords. Twilight, Pea Soup, The Skids, Peaches , Liverpool, Bagley and E Bow.
