First time I played this game in 1988, I was 10. It was in USSR in Soviet republic of Kazakhstan. Hi to all Soviets children!!!! Still love this game and sounds
This is awesome. This is a game, if you were an Atari user, this was the boss. Everything about this classic was divine. No cheep deaths, hit detection was spot on, multi ways of demise. Ropes, ladders, gems, meanies, dark rooms, it was all there to come back to, and enjoy all over again, and again, and again. Fantastic game , that I still play today, on iOS though, shame.
Exists a beautiful 3D remake called "Azangara". The graphics are beautiful, modern, original style, good original levels, great music and sounds, also the game has a full-fledged community and even custom levels.
My friend at school used to play this... there was only 1 computer in the computer lab that could play this game, and he always got that computer. All I could play was Where is Carmen Sandiego... and sometimes Lode Runner. We got only 1 hour per week into the computer lab.
Used to play this on my C64 too, what a great game. Imagine my surprise later in life when I finally found out what Montezuma's Revenge really means :)
This one was one of a few games I played on Atari and as a Commodore fan/owner I sadly enjoyed it more than the C64 version. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Great game. Played it in the mid eighties in the apple 2c. Spent a lot of time playing this game and finishing it. Remember the challenge of navigating in the dark screens.
Wow. Thanks for posting this. I often played this game on my Atari 800XL, and watched this video while working (ha). Thankfully, I now have Montezuma's Revenge on the Colecovision Flashback, which is pretty close to this version overall.
This game laid the tracks for games like Super Mario Brothers. It was well designed and thought out. I remember all the scenes like yesterday as well as the intensity and frustration of trying to make it through.
I used to play as kid untill last level in totally darkness and I remembered every step. I don't know if now I'd have same skills and patience:) One of best game I ever played on C64 and still enjoyable nowadays.
Well played sir! Ah the memories, this game was actually kind of hard. Me and my cousin used to play and see who is better all the time. wow that was like almost 30 years ago.
I spent some time playing this way back...as a kid on my parents IBM...haven't seen these levels since 1986...so crazy. Also played King's quest, buck rogers, sopwith, tapper plus a few others.
Don't worry about not finding the torch. you do not need it to get to the treasure room at all, the only gap is the one you jump into. Just be sure you carry down two cyan keys into the dark, which shouldn't be that hard. :)
I remember reaching a point where I would play a large percentage of the game in the dark on pure memory. I suspect it was around level 8 or so. I'm slightly bothered by the route you took through level 1, it looks very long and hard compared to what I remember my route was.
omg.. we played this in computer class in elementary LOL.. this and Conan and a math game with vacuum cleaners I think.. going down a nostalgia rabbit hole today it seems 😁
The reason for confusion is that the Montezuma's Revenge (the one with intro from non-existing Utopia company) is the pre-release version which Robert Jaeger took to Parker Brothers asking them to release it. Unfortunately Parker Bros. demanded that the final game should fit in the 16KB cartridge thus author cut out quite a bit... Some time later the unfinished earlier version leaked.
Holy crap .... this has levels? I remember the bonus part between the levels but I don't remember it was between levels. So I guess, I've made it to level 2, .... that's good for occasional playing on Atari as I had C64 and didn't have this game personally.
It actually has "infinite levels": the shape is basically the same while the connections between the rooms are different in levels 1 and 2 (which have to be solved differently). From the third on, all levels have the same topology so one can solve them moving preferably on the right or on the left of the initial room. Starting from the bottom, the number of dark floors increases to the point of having basically all the game in the dark at about level 9 (above which, the counter of levels actually does not increase if I remember correctly).
Holy crap. You got far enough to demonstrate that the game essentially just repeats over and over again. I have officially been robbed of my desire to ever play this game again.
No. The level counter levels up at nine but you can go on forever, so the game lacks an "end" of any form. A demo version of an earlier stage of developement of the game on the Atari platform, released as a bootleg, features sort of a "final" stage with Montezuma. However, the latter cannot be defeated. Again, this is not the final version which has no ending.
My Dad beat this somehow, he stayed up all night. It was on the Apple GSII and the final level just had the little guy infinitely falling catching coins. He woke us up the next day and showed us the lil guy infinitely falling catching infinity coins, wow~!
i played this game when i was a fucking baby and i remember some part of it, didnt realize that it was so fucking epic like this even then, its an awesome platformer even for today standars

the beginning of our life
Rihht it was so much fun
One of the best games ever made for Atari. I loved that game.
This is awesome. This is a game, if you were an Atari user, this was the boss. Everything about this classic was divine. No cheep deaths, hit detection was spot on, multi ways of demise. This was the first game I ever played and loved back in the 80’s. I’m 37 and still rock it with video games!
Exists a beautiful 3D remake called "Azangara". The graphics are beautiful, modern, original style, good original levels, great music and sounds, also the game has a full-fledged community and even custom levels.
A very tough game. Well played! The jumping had to be very precise to survive in Montezuma's Revenge.
My friend at school used to play this... there was only 1 computer in the computer lab that could play this game, and he always got that computer. All I could play was Where is Carmen Sandiego... and sometimes Lode Runner. We got only 1 hour per week into the computer lab.
My favorite game on the 1st console I owned, an Atari 5200. Nice job on the playthru, brought back a lot of great memories!
I played this game in the 80s. Nostalgia))

Actually no, this is the production run :)

I remember this game was slower on my original Atari 800XL. Anyway nice playing. :)
there is a second torch to be found if you go right. go down when you can, then go left until you find it.
Holy crap. You got far enough to demonstrate that the game essentially just repeats over and over again. I have officially been robbed of my desire to ever play this game again.
Sorry, good sir :D
I remember typing this game in at school to be able to play it.
This cannot be true :D

Enough suspense for today!
This was my favorite game when I lived in Poland
Childhood remembrance...
and, I think, this is not Motesuma's Revenge - this is Preliminary Monty
This is not the preliminary version. The latter did not have the vault connecting subsequent levels.
