There's an EU and US version, I chose EU as it had better/more stuff.
The EU version has:
* A different logo (the first thing we get to see). It has a big picture of that Infogrames animal and gray background, while the US version has a big DATA EAST logo with a small picture of the Infogrames animal and text saying:
"Ⓒ INFOGRAMES 1990 small animal here
UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN COPYRIGHT DATA EAST USA. INC."
* Flags under the trumpet guy (to select language), while US has "NORTH & SOUTH" written in green there instead.
* Has the picture and music at 02:46, which the US version completely lacks both of.
Some other differences are the US version has "TM" above the right screw-head on the menu screen. It also has green scrolling text on the trumpet guy part, while EU has blue. Starting the US version in PAL will prompt a box after pressing fire on the trumpet guy screen with text saying "NORTH & SOUTH NTSC VERSION" and an "OK" button underneath. It won't let you continue if you don't switch to NTSC. Then of course EU is 50Hz/fps and US is 60Hz/fps, but neither use more than like 20 or lower, in most cases. It's just the flying birds on the game over screen and fading that uses the 50/60. Could be somewhere else, but ye, mainly 20 or below everywhere. For once the NTSC version didn't make the game or music run faster. Both had the same speed (in the stuff I checked, was just briefly).
The game could be over in like 2 mins after the map appeared (the CPU was so suicidal), but I wanted to show as much as possible so prolonged his defeat and played a bit slowly. Save-states came in handy. Wanted to end the game by owning as much territory as possible, which could have been done way quicker of course, but took my time and had some repeated fun with the different arcade mini-games.
00:00 - Intro, or whatever to call it.
02:42 - Menu selection stuff
03:17 - Before we play, let's listen to this entire tune first.
04:47 - Tune over, time to play
26:31 - Game over with the blue dudes. Game over looks the same for the grey dudes, but different text. When defeated with the grey dude, this text is displayed instead:
"MY GOODNESS, CORPORAL! THE MIRACLE DIDN'T HAPPEN. THE YANKEES CRUSHED YOU IN 3 MONTHS. BUT THE WORST HAS BEEN AVOIDED THANKS TO THEIR LOW MORAL."
I lowered the CPU to almost nothing at 03:37. It was the only way to get the whole tune to play. Any faster and it would be over WAY before the whole thing had played, as the game automatically continues after like 10 secs or something... normally. Due to the lower CPU, the music played about 10% too slow though, so doesn't sound perfect, but I'm sure most people wouldn't notice even if they compared it to normal speed.
My first goal was to take the middle bottom 3 flags so I would cut off the train, and thus get to play that arcade train game. I didn't want to take the fort, so stood around there for a while waiting for an opportunity.
Later at 11:53 he did what I tried to do earlier. Now we get to see the train stuff and I don't have to try and get that anymore. Only thing I regret is not showing more of the train parts, like the very front thingy.
14:16 - He attacks my fort and I should have let him take it over the first time because he kept trying, so I let him have it at his 3rd try or something, so the spamming would stop.
20:14 - Good time to show you can retreat if wanted. -

I forgot to add the Mexican bomb thingy, sorry about that.
Like I said in the video description of the longplay on my own channel:
A Mexican throws a bomb if I step into his territory. I recorded it so many times that I forgot to include it :). Hate when that happens. Happens when I redo parts over and over again until I get them the way I want, so I see them over and over again. Then sometimes (like this time) I just think I recorded it again and continued on. Oh well, sucks, but meh. The longplay was already recorded, encoded and upped. Didn't feel like redoing the process.
I always do extensive research before doing a longplay to include as much as possible. Checking different versions, even the difference in game files, checking different cheats (not to use during the longplay of course, but in another video, some are fun), reading reviews... and then include as much as possible in the longplay. Stuff I don't include are in an 'extras' video instead (this longplay doesn't have one), and video description. Sometimes I mess up and miss something, even though I knew about it :), but it's very rare.
Oh well..... shit happens :P
One of my favorite games, when i had the Amiga 500!
@@maxmaker76 Yes indeed
The SOUTH will rise again !!! General Lee
Brings back many good memories!!!! One of my favourite games!!!
Any over 40 years old gamers here and still in the business?
Me
Here , Bro .....greetings from Germany
in mid 80's i had commodore 64, and in the 90's Amiga 500. And im still gaming today. Im 45 yrs old. That will never change :-)
@@HaveAniceDay2450 Good to know. Greetings. By the way, PC or consoles at the moment ?
@@korzeniek78 im on playstation :-) And you?
i remember this as if it was yesterday.. on my amiga500+... 30 years ago
3:24 Music's so good the cursor starts dancing
Flip me, i remember playing this game, especially the memories of the intro, mouse clicking on the photographer's posterior. Lol
Ohhhh yeeeah man. Great game, great memories of playing it. 😀👍👍👍
Jesus, incredible nostalgia. I used to play this at my friends house back in the mid-90s.
Ditto. This and speedball 2
And Hostages, Golden Axe , Final fight , ABP , Stunt car racer , 4x4 super off road racer and many more!!! My schoolfriend introduced me to The Amiga. Happy days 😎
Same. Good times.
Same here, early 90's with my mates amiga 500. I was so envious because all I had back then was C64 with cassette tape
Same, I used to play it with a neighbor.
Games like this were the highlight of the computing era of the late 80s, early 90s in my opinion- originality, lots of talent and care taken with the graphics and sound, humour produced with both of those tools to good effect, and a variety of imaginative game modes strung together. The sort of games that left young players a little bit unsure as to whether they were doing it right (because it was not formulaic, like a straightforward platformer for example), but having fun all the same. I remember being sat in front of a computer playing this, usually with mates or just me and my brother, frantically trying to manoeuvre the armies about on the battlefield to avoid being shot.
Can you recommend any other games from the era?
@@jackrussell3084
Sid Meier's Pirates! is prime example of mixing game modes. One of best games ever made.
This soundtrack is still famous because I use it as ringtone and when I'm in public transport and my phone is ringing, some older people know what it''s.
I absolutely loved this game as a child. 😅😅😅brings back so many memories
3:11 I was waiting for this.
Me too.
Both this and the NES version are fantastic! This game is a must own for either Amiga Owners or NES owners. Its that good.
Da schwebt man in Erinnerung. Ein Kult Spiel, allein die Musik.
Das Spiel hat mein Opa mit mir zusammen auf dem NES gespielt, die gute alte Zeit 😢
I loved this game as a kid, even though the AI cheated by moving all units at once :-P
Yeah, but the AI cheated itself too by being awful. Like at 18:48 when their cavalry gets stuck in the bottom of the screen forever xD
Thats not a cheat.
AI, like my microwave is ai? Lol 😂
Just played this on my Amiga500 🥳 very surprised it worked after 30 years in my loft, one of my favourite games along side cabal
I remember being so excited that there were actually several troops on a field at once, in formation even! Good HS memories.
Amazing game! Played it almost every day back in the early 90's. Just top stuff!
I loved this game especially because I didnt really understand it. But very good memories anyway.
That intro is magnificent!
Jason M top 10 videogame intro
This was one of my favorite Amiga games. My go-to game to kill time on my Amiga 1000. Probably played it more than any other, and I had boxes and boxes of pirated games.
The soundtrack of this version was brilliantly crafted. :D
Played this on the NES back in the early 90’s with my Brother. Those were some good memories.
Basically the first ever total war
There was also Sword of the Samurai, which was basically a version of Shogun before Shogun. Not sure whether that or this came out first.
Loved this, wings of Fury, hostages and Persian gulf inferno
I literally had no idea how to play this game but i fucking loved it
amiga absolute classic game
Thanks for the upload. I played this game a lot back in the days.
Yeah, so did I. Was amazing fun with friends.
God I loved this game. Played it as a kid over and over again.😀 44 now.
I played this when I was 9 years old, now I'm 23, thanks for the good memories:)
I forgot about this game. It was so much fun. And the music 🥰🥰🥰☺️
id play this after school all the time coup,, man it was a blast
3:17 MAAANN, I forgot how epic that intro music was! Somebody make a remix of that!!!
On it
This soundtrack is dope, lets pllllls see it live
All of it
Very imaginative gameplay and great animations. I had no clue how to play it back in the day though.
I played this game all the time such as brilliant game loved the arcade elements and the sounds!
In the early of 90's.....that days were very good and funny...
Les tuniques bleues is a fantastic comic book
Retro Land Bande Dessinée*
Hérétique ;)
Agree, have all of them at home :)
I enjoyed reading them as a child. I have almost all the volumes. Except the new ones. The game was available in a remastered edition for iPad. But not anymore. I think the woke lefties got it cancelled. Probably because it contains the confederate flag and you can play as a rebel. Thereby winning the civil war for the south and changing history.
@@ikagura I know I wanted to speak for English people
All time best 2 player game on Amiga :)
Nah, that was Troddlers 😉
You move the mouse pointer side to side with the music. Who didn’t. 🤣😂 Brilliant.
Awesome game. In two player whoever had the joystick was usually the winner lol, those cavalry would carve up the guy using the keyboard keys
Hahahaha! So true! Joystick cavalry was seriously OP!
One of the best and funniest games i have ever played. Great memories.
A true classic. Shame it's easy to beat after one gets used to it. I guess it's more fun to play against a friend. Once in a while I still play if for a bit on the emulator and always do what I originally did in Amiga-day - move around the map and intentionally not attacking the CPU side, allowing it to get stronger armies - then the game experience is a bit longer and more challanging.
Love this game. Probably the first strategy game I've ever played.
Avid collector of the comics, and the music + sound effects are ingrained in my mind.
Did you know they made a rework of this as a game app? Well...sort of.
Update, they made a remake that's on console and steam. Unfortunately they replaced the train and fort capture with really bad FPS gameplay.
My Favorites on Amiga 500, was "Block Out" and "Monkey Island"
i dont know how long i didnt hear this sound. i love it.
Omg the song is so familiar, it's like going back in time 😂👍👍👍
My Dad & I would spend hours on this game & "Sensible Soccer." Even though he was bloody hopeless at them. They were some of the best times I ever had.
If you're watching, Dad. Thanks for the memories. Till we meet again, R.I.P. 🙏
I used to play this with my Dad when i was a kid, hadn't a clue how to play but man i killed it on the train/fort sections.
Haha, played this a lot for a time, it was great and fun!
incredible fun with two players
Used to love this game... great to play with friends too!!!!
The great thing is that you can still play it and online too! Check out Amigalive.
thanks for the history lesson, this game is funny and looks fun as hell, never heard of it though hehe
one of my favorite games as a kid. how I like the photographer tweaked in the ass, just to hear how he squeaks 😉✌
This was and is a nice little game. Especially in two player mode. Graphics and music werer absolutely great for its time although controls in the action sequences could have been better. But North & South is a classic!
Fully agreed. The fort and train sequences were awful to control even back then. Other than that the game was absolutely great. A true classic. Just like The Big Lebowski 😉
Best 8bit Soundtrack ever
My mother threw my original A500 kickstart v1.2 into the trash bin about 15 years ago. Absolutely heartbreaking.
The music is awesome
memories
Fuck I love the indian theme when he throws the tomahawk
This used to blow my mind when I was a kid
Jesus. The music is so hyped and happy to the backdrop of Americas bloodiest moral war. Lol
Loved the Amiga and C64 versions of a kid. Never did care for the NES version thougjh.
Thank you for this video and have a nice day.
👌😏😊
Ha’, When I played this as a kid I also moved the cursor to the music on the loading screen. Until the point where you couldn’t move it anymore.
I loved this game, is so funny...👍👍👍👍👍👍
This was my first multiplayer game. :')
OMG. This game was sooooo good. I totally forgot I ever played it. On the PC version if I remember correctly there was a couple of ways to kind of cheat in the battles - I think the cannons were kind of overpowered so you could basically destroy everything with them if you got good at the acarde part and you managed to take out the other guy's cannons - I have a hazy memory of basically needing to take out his cannons with my cannons then destroy the bridge with the cannon and it was all over because I'd just be able to pick them off. But I remember it being so much fun ghough.
Indigende Aufstände hingegen für Nordstaatler? Leider geil!
Timeless masterpiece, fun to play in 2023
you forgot to show the little mexican dude that blows up one of your units
It exists a PC recent remastered version, with 3d first person view sections for the fort assaults. Very nice indeed.
Ich habe dieses Spiel geliebt 😂❤
Love this game so much 🤩🤩🤩
It's an Infogrames game! Run! This ain't a drill! 😂😂
Loved this and Dogs of War
I loved that game!
This is based on a comic strip called Les Tuniques bleues (The blue coats)
Like US Civil War in Asterix-land. The creators of Asterix did of course also do an American West comic series, Lucky Luke.
LOL i had so much fun in my youth with this fame , one of my first i ever played :))) and i has Fields of Glory :)) Unirts did what they want no controlling :)))
is it okay for you when i use some parts of this gameplay in a video i'm currently create? i will put in a link to your channel of course.
Omg the memories ❤
Bloody Hell ... these were the times :D
OMG......I'm so old....😢
en sevdiğimdi.. çok oynadık ❤

Maşallah Cenk bey. Veteran gamerlik böyle birşey demek ki :)
@@muratalagoz2113 :))Evet hâlâ XBOX ONE X Var 🤗😁
Nice game! Never seen before.
As i understood, in singleplay only North is a playable side?
No, either side was playable (or even both at the same time). You could set that by switching the background of the generals' portraits on the main screen. When you switched the background to display the flag of the side, then the player played the side. When you switched it to display a computer mainframe, then computer played that side.
This is amazing, the soundtrack is so funny too 2:48 - 4:35 and when the injans move around
I had alot of fun with this game, but yeah the cavalry is overpowered , you can wipe any army with just the 3 horses, fun as hell thou.
Hmmm. Interesting. I remember the cannons being overpowered. Maybe I got it wrong. It's being a long time ago. Or maybe I never leanred how to use the cavalry properly. Either way - fond memories of miss-spent youth.
2:42 Why is the Dixie Land song played for the North team?
Lincoln said it was his favorite song. That's the only reason I can think of
Siiiiiii! Che gioco!!!!! Bellissimo
oh man. i played this game
The Civil War was never so goofy...
OMG I was 5 maybe 6 when I played it on Atari STE. I didn't know the language so you can imagine how it looked like.
I LOVE GAME!! GOOD GOOD GAME!!!
I am old...
I'm still in shock, I played this a hell of a lot, but never, ever played the train or the fort missions! 😮😮😮😮
legend
I loved this game most....and the Kingdom of England
Very different from the NES version of this game. Still a fun game on either system.
The reason why i bought a second joystick
Just phantastic !!!!
