Scotty, love your videos. As a former ASE master automotive technician and licensed teacher of automotive technology and repair, I find your videos very educational and informative. You should be commended for the great information you share with others from your vast experience from all your years as a master mechanic. Hats off to you sir.
Scotty thank you for teaching me about cars brother.
Just wanted to say thank you for your very helpful information in your videos. As a woman that does most of my own repairs on my 07 g6. I use the information that you share to keep my car on the road at almost 300,000 miles and counting. Thanks again.
Great to see these hands on repair videos and explained in the simplest terms for us regular guys. These are super helpful! Keep them coming!
"Rev up your Engines!" Great show as always Scotty! Thanks for all the info over the years.
I’m 16 and just got a new (used) car, and I can’t wait for summer to roll around and start working on it! I want to have my own tools and do the jobs myself because places around here are notoriously bad, so i’m gonna try for the torque wrench!
Awesome!!! You're gonna save a ton of $$$$!!!
Best wishes to u
Not trying to implicate your capabilities but always remember... Jack stands! Never crawl under a vehicle without it being supported by jack stands or ramps. No matter how quick you think you can do it. Have fun!
I'm not entering so this kid has a better chance to win.
Get a Torque wrench from home depot I've had one for over 15 years and still in spec. Just remember to take the tension off the wrench when you are finished.
We can’t emphasize torquing things enough! I can’t stand it when a drain plug has been tightened so much that it ruins the threads! Nice job.
Yup. Iight snug is enough. They don't loosen with driving.
Or wheel lug nuts. They're almost always tightened too tight. About 75 lbs is usually right.
Thanks for saving my bearings...often asked how come mine get worn out so fast. Now i have an idea that my mechanic is not doing the right thing. Thanks for this!
Got mugged in Newark 2 weeks ago - that torque wrench would've come in handy...
Omg . Was the person caught?
@OBServe Garage can't even carry mace (Gov. Whitman made that illegal). However, a torque wrench under the front seat....."well, officer, I was just gettin' ready to work on my bearings, when I was accost'd by deese two 'yutes...."
That place is absolutely disgusting it was my first night there and they broke into my car and destroyed it.. hope they found the crack they were looking for an OD'd on and died... will never go back 🤢

I need a torque wrench
Rev up your engine
Scotty Kilmer great info love this channel
Scotty Kilmer what do you think about aftermarket lighten crank pulley? Do they harm our engine on the long run? Do you recommend using one?
My car is a 2007 Scion TC, does it have a sealed assembly?
This is how I can tell your a damn good mechanic, your garage is disorganized and we see a lot of engine parts and boxes in the background! I truly Value your knowledge and opinions, keep up the good work Scotty!!!!!
Scotty you are the best teacher on the internet. Thanks for the knowledge and your experience that you are sharing.
A CLEAN NON-OFFENSIVE COMMENT! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity, Scotty!!!
Thanks for all you do Scotty.
I love those pics/memes/infos on the side as you explain different topics and concepts. Thank you!

Packing wheel bearings brings back good memories
Still do it on fork lift trucks, I find it quite relaxing! 😂
I always find packing them by hand to be a real pain, although possibly a zen moment if you choose to look at that way (so Thanks!). It's a lot more reliable than the cheap bearing fillers mechanisms that you can buy at the corner parts store (using wheel bearing grease there too of course). Getting the races out by hand carefully is the real fun ;-)
It's my car's birthday today, that torque wrench would would be perfect
Happy birthday!
Thanks for these helpful tips Scotty! These tips are basic but important ones, yet, are one of the most ignored preventive measures just to cut some costs. I really appreciate your tips esp from the previous videos because it helps and debunks what we thought were a no-no in the auto industry, yet, by trying your age old solutions helped solve most issues before even deciding to pay a visit to the stealership. Well done.
Another wonderfully informative video by Scotty Kilmer! Keep 'em comin'!!!
I remember olden times when you tightened nut and backed it off a quarter turn lol. I cant say I miss packing wheel bearings but it appears to have been less trouble!
Yep! I was thinking..."what's with this torque wheel bearings nonsense" haha
yup tighten the snug back off til the next hole for the pin and slide the pin in😂
You are the best mechanic on YT! Thanks so much!
Yes he is.
Great advice Scotty, I've seen a few of your videos now but this one is my favorite. Keep making them. You never seem long winded to me and your advice is both entertaining and educational at the same time.
Great tips on how to prolong your wheel bearings life Scotty. Keep the great , straight forward education coming.
Thanks for the torque wrench giveaway, your vids help me with auto repair often!
I replaced my car's wheel bearing more than 4 times and couldn't figure out why they wear out so soon. But after watching your video I just realized that I did torque the check nut way too tight. Thanks for this enlightening video 👍👌👌
one would not get the facts more precise and accurate.
I hit a curb during a winter storm when I slid going around a corner and my front right wheel bearing started making noise shortly after. I priced up a complete wheel bearing hub assembly for my Saturn Aura and since it was less than $50 and the car had 150K miles on it I decided to do both sides even though one was fine. Simple job, had both done in less than 2 hours taking my sweet time. Was shocked to hear that on some cars this is an expensive and labor intensive job. I'll make certain to avoid those cars when I need a new one.
From one original upstate New Yorker to another, I enjoy viewing your videos. Thank you Scotty
I went one better than OEM when I replaced the hub assemblies on my Trailblazer. I went with Timken replacements as they are the same brand used on locomotives and railroad rolling stock. Yeah, they're expensive, but I'm willing to bet I don't have to change them again.
Did the same with mine when I had it. You sure it’s not cheaper than OEM? That’s a neat fact I will take into consideration when I eventually get my 3/4 03-06 but I may still stick with OEM just because that’s what it was designed for from the get. Not bashing you at all because Timken is far from “Raybestos” or Nakamoto or whatever the hell those knock off parts are! :)
Got them in my old Ford. Good bearings.
Other quality brands:
SKF, New Departure.
Rebel9668 Yes they are top quality 👍.
I lived in Columbus, OH where Timken had their factory. I've been using Timken bearings in customers and my own vehicles for
40 + years. NO PROBLEMS EVER.
Was quoted $704 from a local shop to do a front wheel bearing on my 01 silverado. This was for a crappy off name brand. No thanks. Ordered the timken replacement and did it myself in just over an hour.
@John Smithy paid around 100 per side for the part.
@@christopherhendricks4369 retail is overpriced.... that's still too much money. try rockauto. $30 plus shipping. i have bought many hub assemblies from rockauto. its the same quality as retail at less then 1/2 price
$700. That’s insane
I bet $500 was labor.
Me too!
Nice videos! I learned so much about cars. I don’t fix them but you taught me the symptoms and signs so every time when I feel something is wrong with my car. I am always right! Great informative and easy to understand videos! And I love the pics but the way!
I'm sure you have been told this but your photos placed in the video.... Priceless, Everytime!
I'm from the rust belt, potholes and snow filled salt are a way of life.
I remember back in the '80s, my girlfriend told her friends that I repacked her wheel bearings.
By the end of the year, I ended up doing the same for about 8 of her friends. All I got was a "thanks sweety" and a kiss from my girlfriend.
Looking back, I should have charged them cash.
I know right, the things we've done just to get some.
Were her friends also girls?
@@escueme All but one.
Then the male friend said to you: "thank you sweetie" and give you a kiss??
I know right, the things we've done to get none. @@2405jacko
Thanks Scotty, I had to replace a wheel bearing on my Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero) and it cost me an arm and a leg. With the tips you have provided, I am not armed on how take care of them
SO helpful. I ALWAYS check Scotty Kilmer first. Never done me wrong.
Thanks. This bought back memories. My dad and I used to replace bearings on his Pontiac (45 years ago). We didn't use a torque wrench. He didn't have much money but he got the job done.
Thanks for the great to the point videos. You’ve helped me save money and time. I’ve learned some really good points from you as well as time saving trips. Much appreciated! No China steel parts ever. Lower standards in those factories. Thanks Scotty.
Interesting info, I must share with my children whom both haven't long been driving. I tell them both, they're in a whole new world. And they need to be more alert to the car they drive and what's going on on the road. We live in Chicago
Hi, Mr. Scotty I just start to watching your videos And boy, I have learned so much already. You explain everything so well, and with a good sense of humor, you can't go wrong. Thank you so much keep on going And God bless you.
I've been watching your channel. You are a treasure trove of knowledge. I will help my brother change my hub/bearings.
Wow,that's really good advice!I'll have to be more aware of this!I'd hate to have to replace that part!!😁💰💲💸💸💸💰🙀😲🙊🙊Thanks for all your great help Mr.Kilmer!!
Great info about wheel bearings.
Your videos are very informative, I always learn something new. Keep up the good work Scotty!
Scotty!! Been listening to your videos for years now... been trying to find the money to get myself another torque wrench since mine broke to fix 4 wheel bearings on two of my vehicles... finally you can show some love back for my support 😁 haha
Great video! My chiltons manual back in the 80s sometime listed the wheel bearing nut torque as 12 ft lbs. I was eating up wheel bearings every few months. Then I got a factory manual (5 volumes iirc) and it said 12 INCH lbs. After setting it right they never needed a change again in the 8 years I drove it.
12 inch pounds, is a very small amount for a wheel bearing . Must be a child's wagon ! !
It was a 1969 mustang. I still have the manuals! 😀
Chiltons don't have a good reputation... use another Manual.... I have 10 different manuals for My 1968 VW autostick BEETLE..... Great video too...
Wow!
@@Exarhadsgfds there are 12 inches in a foot.....do the math......12 foot pounds is equal to 144 inch pounds....12 times 12
Owner of 2 vehicles with 250K+ miles and counting... Could use a new 1/2" drive torque wrench. But since when did beggars become choosers? Great Videos...Keep it up Scotty!
Man, it feels like only yesterday that Scotty started adding photos into his videos, and then I just happened to come across this one, which is 5½ years old!
Scotty knows it all when it comes to almost any car. Fantastic videos. Simple, efficient and effective. Best of all ENTERTAINING!

Whoop whoop!!!
I started watching you about a month ago. And let me tell you. I love the solid info you give. I do alot of my own work on my vehicle 2000 mazda b3000. And your knowledge has really helped me. Ty so much for looking after the diy ers. You steer me in the right direction all the time. I'm just about ready to do my suspension and I now have a understanding on how to do it correctly. Thx again. Mike from nj
I got the same exact vehicle. Baby that 5-speed transmission if you have one.I beat the hell out of my manual transmission and it's starting to make noise now.
Thanks Scotty I love your information and all your videos and I hope you just keep on helping us people that don't know as much as you do thanks
Funny how this popped up when I was cleaning and re packing my wheel bearings today!
I’m changing my bearing very useful information thank you
You're the best, Scotty. I learn so much from your videos. I can see the work you put into them.
Enjoy your no nonsense informative videos! Thank you for your expertise and time.
You're the man, Scotty!!!
He is the man if you worship swindlers.
Great video Scotty. I worked at a chain shop and watched guys hammer on those axle nuts with an impact wrench. Also a good idea: say you pull out the CV axle at 120,000miles for whatever reason. Change the seal on the back of the hub while it's out! (If there is one.) You can get another 40,000 out of your bearing by doing that, you've probably disturbed the seal by taking the axle out or some times the spring pops off the seal. Also SKF is a good company, probably only aftermarket bearings I would trust even if they are made in China.
Thank you Scotty. I always watch your video and learn a lot about car maintenance from you.😊
I enjoy all your videos because ive learned so much about things I need yo know to help my vehicle last longer.Thank u si much Scotty
Scotty knows more about cars than I thought.
Amazing video.
You must be new to the channel! He has 50 years of experience fixing cars!
Scotty is one of the few out there that I generally always agree with. Makes me feel good about myself coz he has much more experience than me. Worked on cars all my life, mostly my own but do have a degree in automotive technology, was a Chrysler certified tech, and I still learn from him! Great channel!
Thank you Scotty for your useful tips.
Thanks Scotty, for the video and the torque wrench. God bless you. Always look forward to your videos. I recently contacted you and got the list of videos you have made, and have started on watching them. Old Joe
Thanks Scotty. You’re always a great source for great mechanic info 😎👍🏼🇺🇸
Love the show Scotty!! Great tips
Hey Scotty, been watching your vids for the past year or so since im trying to be a mechanic. Leanred a lot off your videos and also helped me finding stuff out myself. Just want to say Thank you & send me that torque wrench please lol
What I like about your videos especially its these additional pictures popping out supporting when you comment on things. No matter what you do in life, humor always gets you away :)
I like your knowledgeable down to earth approach. Thanks for the great videos.
4:07 😂😂😂 "oooooooOOOORRRRRtheYEEEEAAaaaarzzzz..."
Thanks for actually editing that in all by itself! 😂😂😂
Scotty I know what you mean about the old wheel bearings. I used to watch my dad repack them without any fancy repacking devices. He would get a blob of wheel bearing grease and put it in the palm of his hand then take one side of the wheel bearing the side you could see the ball bearings and push it down against the grease in the palm of his hand and dragging it across the grease so it will be forced into the wheel bearing. Then it would rotate to wheel bearing and do the same thing again and again until he got all the way around the bearing. He didn't have a torque wrench... he couldn't afford one so he did it all by feel and he never had one go bad on him. That was old school poor way of doing things.
The older cars were designed to be maintained without special tools.
Yeah we never owned a torque wrench growing up either. I had three setting for "hand tight": 1) reasonable that my girlfriend could probably get it loose. 2) tight enough that my hand started to hurt. 3) King Kong tight when you stripped the bolt, bent the wrench and/or felt the gear in the ratchet about to give way. And the thing is, it worked when the job was done, but you don't quite know for sure if long term is was done right. I think a lot of so-called professional mechanics worked this way too, as my cousin had a trucking yard and they had every kind of tool imaginable, but I never saw them get out the torque wrench or go to a shop manual for a torque spec.
@@gdeangelkick a knowledge of what the component does lets you know how much to tighten. Just don't strip a bolt as that can ruin your day. Most things can be done without torque wrenches. Gaskets can be a different thing as you don't want too much pressure..
Yep, saw the same!
Good I'm glad I'm doing it the right way the past 55 years... 😃
Find your videos very helpful. Keep them coming!
Scotty, this one really takes me back. Packed them MANY TIMES. Dad taught me to put the grease in my hand an use the heal of the palm to push it in. Miss my pop!
I never knew there was so much involved with wheel bearings.Very informative,Thanks Scotty.
I love breaking out the Torque wrenches! Thats when you know its time for business 😎
I knew my car had 4 wheels when I left this morning but now I only have 3 THANX SCOTTY YOU'RE THE GREATEST !!!
The way you explain everything is simple, comprehensive and entertaining; thank you.
rev up your wheel bearings
Yes! Talk the torque! So important, yet undervalued.
Good advice and very well explained... Thanks. First time I subscribe to anything on line and I've been on line for many years.
Im replacing my wheel bearings but my toolbox got stolen a week ago. After replacing the tools i needed to do this job I didnt have enough cash to buy a torgue wrench. I was gonna borrow one from Oriellys but if you would send me one youd have my undying appreciation and gratitude. Much respect, Ken. P.S. Your videos are always helpful even though I know enough about fixing cars to get by. Thank you.
Only wheel bearing I still pack is to my little take it to the dump trailer. Still hate the smell of bearing grease. Thanks for the memories Scotty 🤪
Nice video Scotty. Very cool 😎
Lot's of useful info here Scotty! Just had my right front brake caliper seize on my 2004 Honda Crv Ex Awd. I quickly pulled over. But maybe the damage was already done. That rotor is slightly warmer than the other side after a drive. I'll have to keep an eye {Hand} on it every day to monitor the temp. Thanks for the videos.
I know next to nothing about cars but you explain things so well I leave knowing something. Thank you great job.
Great tips! My 2010 Equinox needs new bearings right now!

Wow even Scott's torque wrench is OEM! Nice tips gonna be replacing bearing pretty soon!
Good info Scotty!
Thanks for the 411 my wheel bearings need to be replaced on my 02 DeVille. I'll be sure to buy the OEMs and to torque them with the proper tightness. Glad you mentioned injecting grease because I've done that as a temporary measure until I get the new ones, now I know better. Appreciate your channel. I hope you keep doing this for a long time and have much more success.
I have learned the hard way about torquing properly, but glad to be reminded since I tend to have a heavy wrench hand. Thanks for all the mentoring.
Torque wrench is a necessary tool for all mechanic and DIY people
Nice and clean good comment Scotty!
Great video always learning something new. Scotty is a rare find an honest mechanic is hard to find these days. Now if only I had a new torque wrench to replace my wheel bearing.
