The seller of the car mentioned it's from the tires but of course it was a lie :)) the sound was still there even after changing to winter tires. I'll totally look into replacing the bearings as well.

    I've has a couple that drove to the shop on fire. Then you need more than a bearing. In the old days there were very few bearing failures as the timken bearings were spaced a few inches apart, and they could be re-greased. Today there are 2 rows of ball bearings close together, way more pressure on close bearings than spaced bearings when you are cornering.

      No need to go that route on a 200k car. Cheap parts are good enouvh to last 100k or a few years before major parts or an accident takes out the car.

    My 17 Toyota Yaris (French built) had both rear wheel bearing go out. I let them go until they made some real noise. 1st one went at ~50K, 2nd one at ~75K.
    My 2012 Yaris (Japanese built) had one go out after hitting a curb @ 200K. Sold the car @ 265K
    When it comes to swapping out wheel bearings, these cassete-style bearings are nice.

    Good one Scotty, my question, if you put the car into neutral on the move isn't risky or dumb to move back into drive, I would think coming to a complete stop then re-engaging the transmission would be best ??

    • @addmix
      @addmix Рік тому +3

      If it's an automatic it wouldn't matter because the fluid mechanical clutch limits the force that can be allowed through the drivetrain. I suppose it could be rougher on your transmission mounts, but other than that, no real problem, your car will shift under load while driving, so it's not really a difference in operation.

    I would have bet you $$ that when a wheel bearing started going out that it was my left front. I was told it's better to replace both, so I did. It was actually the right front. It really wasn't very expensive to do both. I'm glad I did.

    I bought a set of wheel bearings for my 2010 Yaris because many say that you should change them out at least every 100,000 miles (or less) and it was at 148,000 at the time. It's now 153,000 and still have not changed them because I just couldn't get the dang thang off! But I was wondering if it was really unnecessary since I'm not really hearing any noise and it seem to be rolling (by hand) just as good as the new one I also rolled by hand. So what do you think? I still have them in a box safe in the house.

    I recently changed out the 4 bearing assemblies on a 2007 prius. it me the fronts are loud, it passes the shake test and the spin test on the lift, but as you wisely pointed out you need the weight on it to hear it. I am getting the wired microphone like you have, I hoping to narrow it down to one side or the other, i cant believe both are bad out of the box. ( i did torque the axel nut to spec, and the noise does not change if coasting in neutral). some one suggested CV joints, every hear a CV joint whir like a failing bearing?

    if the roads are bad like they are in parts of CT in the northeast, wheel bearings go at all times on every make and brand. My Toyota and Honda they failed at 140,000 miles. On my Subaru, two of them went at 130,000. Unfortunately, the more potholes you fail to miss or more bumpy roads you have to drive on that need replacement, wheel bearings fail all that more often. It is just something you have to live with no matter what brand car you own.

    Possibly similar issue with my Jeep Cherokee KJ [known as a Liberty in the US]. Gets really loud when hitting the freeway. Mechanic looked it over and could only suggest either front left [passenger side in UK] wheel bearing or front differential. Any tips as to how to home it down to a definitive diagnosis?

    The problem with jacking the car up and spinning the wheel is that the weight of the wheel is carried by the top half of the fixed bearing inner race which may still be in good condition. The damage if any will first appear on the permanently loaded lower half of this bearing and will not be detected by this method but only much later when the whole bearing is damaged. So this method is not good for picking up the problem in it's early stages but only much later. It's still OK if you realise this and treat the sound/vibration as an urgent signal to replace the bearing immediately. (from a professional vibration analyst/engineer who spent much of his life making damage assessments on all sorts of rotating industrial equipment).
