      @alaind831 5 років тому +2

      @@7natcho I don't think scotty says to never change the brake fluid (he did mention coolant could be 7y/150k (happens to be 100/150k for my Prius, "life" on my bwm, 100k on my Acura). Brake fluid is hygroscopic as you say, so usual recommendation is replace every 2-3 years (time based not mileage). I just changed it on my used 155k/5 years old prius and it was very dark yellow with some small particles, instead of clear. $6 in part, and 20 min job if I had to do it again. easy peazy (once you figure out how to get Prius into 'invalid mode' and let it pump rear fluid for ya).
      I disagree with scotty on ignoring that maintenance light - most modern car it's a reminder to change the oil (and you need to figure out what additional items if you hit 30k, 60k, 100k, etc...). The Acura reminds you with a code to track the other items...

    Great advice, Scotty. As a 78yr old, I grew up doing a lot of my own servicing and repairs on my cars, even though I wasn't a trained mechanic, but cars were a lot simpler back then and manuals were available for DIY people like me. Now, I drive a Peugeot only 4 months old with more bells and whistles than you can poke a stick at, but it's a great car and I can but keep your invaluable advice in mind for whenever the service light comes on. Oh, by the way, I'm Australian and that's why I'm driving a Peugeot, my 7th, and they've all been reliable great cars. Cheers!

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 Рік тому

      @grahamrankin5557, Columbo drove a Peugeot!!! His looked like one from the mid-1960's... And yes, it did have some issues, but I'll be damned if that thing didn't take him all over Southern Calif. all during that series!!! The older cars & trucks are highly sought after because of their Known inherent reliability... The really nice ones that are simple and drive well are going for amazingly high prices these days... Something that probably WON'T happen with most of the newer vehicles, because of their extremely complex systems, and lack of interchangable designs & equipment.... If you want reliability, go with something simple, and go with something that is popular, as the parts will be easier to find in the aftermarket. This will give your bank account a well deserved relief from pouring $ into your vehicle.

      Well said. Used car dealers and mechanics start drooling when someone who isn't vehicle savvy come through the door. My buddy bought a car at a used car dealer on the other side of town last month, and I wish he brought me with him. It's obvious they cleared the codes before he test drove it, because a few days later, the engine light came on and I'm getting all sorts of codes on my scanner. Also, the car was practically bone dry with no oil and the rear brakes are worn to nothing. It's also got a coolant leak, and the ac needs a recharge. This is why I hate used car dealers. Even though he bought it as is, we have certain lemon laws in CT, that even with an as is sale, prohibits shops from willfully hiding problems on a car, and must pass a multi point safety inspection. I'm going to help him get his money back and leave this piece of junk in their driveway.

      Same here. I was taking my car to this mechanic in town and I seriously started getting this feeling he was sabotaging my car because it was like clockwork, as soon as he fixed something- something else went wrong. Head gasket then ignition switch then valves needed reseated then brake master cylinder one thing after another. Finally I took my car to the other mechanic in town and ever since then I've been having virtually no major issues with my car since.
      Now this other guy will do exactly what needs to be done and even fixes up little things here and there for free. Door was catching so he replaced the pins, store was out of regular brake pads so bought me the premium set at no extra charge. Ignition locked up in my pickup and he knew I needed it for work so he had it fixed for me overnight.

Apparently good honest ones are indeed "few and far in between like brother Peter Suarez posted above. I'm just as straight up as Scotty 'cause I try to put myself in other's shoes. Sure I feel nervous if I had to take my car someplace, but since I'm still able to do my own stuff and I help others, let them buy their own parts if they choose to, all that stuff. It's the places we often work at that are to blame sometimes, not us. I work for ME now and don't have a problem explaining what need to be done and why.

    I am a service advisor at a Toyota dealer, and I will say I agree with you, if you are honest and upfront with your customers, they will come back. I believe in Toyota's products, I pop the hood with the customer, show them around the engine, let them know exactly what we will look at, and even point things if i see them, for instance, had a 2001 prius roll in, and the brake fluid was *black*, like no lie, BLACK, I did not feel bad at all advising the customer that she needed to change her brake fluid, been coming to us since 2004, and never once had it changed.
    I have seen a lot of advisors/techs come and go who were dishonest, wanted to make a quick buck, and drive good customers away. Honesty is always the best practice. And at the end of the day, I feel good knowing I actually helped someone keep a big part of their lives keep on going on Toyota strong!

    I really don’t know anything about cars, but I been trying to learn everything I can about it.
    I have a Nissan Altima 2007 4-2488 2.5L DOHC (or so this paper said), with 185,000 miles, and it has been giving me some trouble lately, I’m no rich guy to be at the Mecanic fixing everything that needs to be done.
    This videos have helped me a lot, and I never write anything on the comments section, because I feel I’m never notice, but today I just feel really grateful and I wanted to say that I appreciate all the knowledge you share with us, and that I will do everything I can to learn how to fix my car and then my next car, and the next one, and the next one, etc.

      @@MoparMadness93 Yes it does. The dishones people make more money at first, but the honest people get a loyal repeat customer base.

      theaberrantdon look man I’ll be straight with you. As a mechanic I can the you most of the time it doesn’t pay to be honest. Is it the right thing to do? Yes it is and I can sleep at night but for the most part being honest isn’t the best way to make money although obviously that’s not always 100% the case

    A local dealer tried nonsense on my new ranger in 2003. 4500 for work on brakes, shocks, leaking rear main seal, etc. I said I'm getting a second opinion. Went to our family mechanic (truck was 400 miles out of warranty) My mechanic looked at it and in five minutes told me to take it home because there's nothing wrong with it. I wrote a letter to the manufacturer with a complaint. The dealership had the nerve to tell me that my mechanic isn't a certified mechanic for that manufacturer. I told him that at least my mechanic can tell the difference between a leak in the rear main seal and left over oil drip from the oil change.
    Beware the dealerships. I'll stick with my mechanic.

      Dealerships are scandalous like that. I never go to the dealer for a fix.

      Lol now that you mentioned certified mechanics...dealerships dont even have licensed mechanics.. here in Houston Texas nissan dealerships and ford dealerships dont even check if your certified when you apply
