Gregg is just such a badass. I remember when I was about 16 years old I got his solo record and transcribed some of his stuff... changed my life for sure. Ran into him maybe two years later when he did a workshop near where I was living. I asked him about one lick I heard him play that night... the infamous Harley Davidson lick. He showed it to me and it genuinly seemed like he was as happy about me asking about it as I was about him showing it to me. He then admitted to me that he himself couldn't figure out that lick when he heard Vinnie play it, so Vinnie showed it to him just like he showed me. Gregg is just awesome both as a drummer / musician, but also as a human. Love him

I love how Gregg ticks the box of nearly every stereotypical drummer's personality. He's such a spas! I love it! Amazing drummer! My buddy Stephen Dresch took some lessons with Gregg back in the 80s and said he was amazing. I never knew how amazing he was until I watched more and more of his style. What a cool guy.
Around 1996 I had Gregg put on a drum clinic and he's still the same now as he was then. They say never meet your heroes because you'll end up disappointed, not in this case....he's absolutely a nice guy.
It's always great to find a drummer that plays their kit like an INSTRUMENT and not just as a metronome for the band. I love having my mind blown open to appreciate the depth and nuance involved in so may fields other than my own.
Gregg is such a monster drummer. Effortless and knowledgeable. I’ve seen many interviews with Billy Sheehan where he talks so highly of Gregg and now I get to see it myself. 👍👍👍
Greg is so fun to watch. His enthusiasm for drums and sharing his knowledge is really admirable. I also want to add, keeping the hi hat going through your fills will keep you from rushing. It’s the main time keeper.
Dude I don't even play drums and I couldn't stop watching this guy. He's got great energy and a sh%t ton of beats that he can pull out right there on the spot. That's freaking impressive.
I watched this with my wife, a non-musician. She said her first impression was that Gregg brings the same kind of energy to percussion that Robin Williams did to comedy. We really enjoyed this video.
Love how Gregg sings along whilst playing... so connected with the music as a whole, not just the drums. Reminds me of Hendrix singing along to his guitar solos :)
On a course the one tutor said to sing the song and that gets you to focus on the feel, style and groove. Also it puts you in the song. It certainly works as a technique.
I had the privilege of seeing Bissonette play drums with Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey’s Bass Extremes at the Jazz Kitchen here in Indianapolis this past February. We had a table right in front of the stage (close enough that my feet were next to/touching cords). Huge honor to witness such precise, world class musicianship delivered with passionate enthusiasm and sheer fun. This guy is a gift to the human race.
I saw Wooten play with his brother Roy "Future Man" Wooten and Bela Fleck in 2008. They played the 12 Days of Christmas in twelve different keys and 12 different time signatures. Mind blown.
Greg is absolutely one of the most incredible drummers of all time. I’ve been a drummer all my life and not a very good one I could play a lot of songs but it is just amazing the depth of what Greg has got into. The greatest day of my life would be spending it during this session with Greg and Rick. I am an introvert and a poor musician and wouldn’t have added anything to the session it would’ve been great for me but wouldn’t added anything to their day. It is just amazing to listen to one of the greatest drummers ever play some of the most intricate drum pieces I’ve ever known absolutely amazing.😍
That would be amazing to spend a day with these two guys... unfortunately I wouldn't be fit to wash their dirty socks😜.. but I do love playing drums and music!
I had the privilege of providing sound for a clinic that Gregg did here in Syracuse many years ago. He jammed with some local players before, during and after the clinic. He's a legendary drummer, a great educator, an encyclopedia of music and one of the coolest guys I've ever met.
How one guy can be so knowledgable and so ridiculously good is really beyond me. So much experience, but it's clear his passion pushes him to the next level! What a monster!!
I am not a drummer but it is amazing just to see how many complex rythmns this guy is just pulling out of his sleeves with an ease. Fantastic. Time was really worth spending here. This guy has really accomplished something.
I usually find these high-energy people a bit taxing after about two minutes but I could watch Greg drum all day. His enthusiasm and energy are infectious. Great guy. 👍
I happened upon one of Greg's instructional DVD's in my formative years and it made music make sense in a way that I could never misunderstand it again. God bless you, Greg and God bless you, Rick!!!!! Two of my heroes in a room talking drums. Much much love you guys.

I’m a guitar player not a drummer but could watch this for hours. Fantastic. Saw Greg and his brother Matt with David Lee Roth on the skyscraper tour in Edinburgh. Happy days!
Wow. Gregg has programmed his entire body to remember beats and grooves. He's got auditory phrases that remind him of the rhythm of the beats (much like tabla players using Dat-Dit-Dagga-Dun), he accesses the same facial muscles every time he does cymbal crashes and different ones for tom rolls, his whole body is always moving and anticipating the next beat. Clearly he has been a sponge for great drumming techniques for decades and has incorporated them all. Impressive.
This guy is awesome! I am 16 and think that these beats really are essential for all drummers to know at my age no matter what style they end up playing because the beats show the history of the drum set and how these great players who made the beats maneuvered around the kit. I know some of these grooves myself and I learned a lot from just taking pieces of each beat and applying them to my playing , so I totally agree with you that these beats are essential to know even through they are 70-40 years old.
You are on the path of light my friend. Whatever other routes into your music you find, this kind of engagement with the material will make you richer.
The enthusiasm and JOY that BOTH Gregg and Rick "FEEL" in this video is just AWESOME.............AND, this is why Gregg is not only a GREAT player BUT, a great teacher/clinician as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...........He plays and describes from the "heart" with passion!!!! Thank you Rick and Gregg for this wonderful video!
Rick, this has to be one of your top 5 videos! What a great way to spend 30 minutes. I'd love to see more footage from your time with Gregg. I especially love how you covered so many different styles of music.
Rick, just came across your post about that gentleman that passed away recently. And I concur with him. You're one of the few out there that has experience, wisdom and heartfelt compassion for music, instruments and, the willingness to share it. I too being somewhat of an old timer do appreciate you exposing your heart. There's not enough of that in this world anymore. I too thank you.
Gregg can play ANYTHING! But he also has analyzed everything in detail and can break it down easily. I met him at a drum clinic in West Virginia about 10 years ago and he was not only entertaining and a great teacher but he knows drums and the history of drums over the years. He is a very impressive musician who is excited about playing drums!
What a master. I don't know almost anything about drumming and never found it interesting but his passion is infectious. Thank you for sharing this and showing us that there is a whole universe to be seen in rhythm.
Gregg is one of the most incredible drummers and better people I've ever met! His passion for music and drumming is inspiring and contagious. THANK YOU!
Gregg has been a huge part of my drumming throughout the years. I'll never forget my mom agreeing for me to have a drum kit for Christmas. We drove in the car to the Drum shop and I bought my first set of drums. I bought two books, a beginner book and Gregg Bissonnette private lesson. I would go through the beginner book and then listen to the tape and try to play a few bars each time going through Gregg's book. I absolutely love this book. I always remember hearing a flam he was doing that was on the rim and thinking how on Earth was he doing that but playing something else at the same time. About a year later I was amazingly surprised when I saw the VHS video of it. I watched through it and saw that part what he was doing - playing the left hand flam between the tom rim and the snare rim and I just fell over blown away as this was driving me crazy thinking how on earth he was doing that. When I saw him playing the flam with the left hand between the Tom and snare I was floored and loved now knowing how that was done. There are so many great things in that book. A year later I met Billy Sheehan at one of his clinics in Manchester England. I really enjoy my friendship with Billy throughout the years. Both Gregg and Billy have been a huge part of my life for many many years. All the best Gregg, God Bless! Rick great as always! Keep up the passion. 👍🥁👍DC
Gregg Bissonette might be at the top of the list of Beato guests that share/match Rick's uncontainable enthusiasm for music. As I watched Gregg's mastery spill out of him like as hyperactive 5 year-old trying to share his expertise of dinosaurs with a distracted parent... only this time the parent was fully engaged and watching with an ear-to-ear smile and a clear sense of bewildered awe, I just kept saying to myself "He makes it look so easy!" I LOVE this channel! What a couple of badasses these guys are... and with zero pretense whatsoever. I SO appreciate what Rick does.
Lmao! Gregg is a trip!!! He’s the most enthusiastic guy I’ve ever seen on your channel, Rick! As a 60 year old amateur drummer, I’ve played most of the songs he does on this video, some damn well, a few I still struggle with to this day. Watching the video is so inspiring! Gregg is such a great guy. His drumming skills are phenomenal, incredible, all those adjectives, but he’s like a kid in a candy store when he breaks down all these great songs! And Rick, you bring out the best in the people you interview! You have the respect of the best musicians in the world because you are a true student of music, and you’re a damn cool guy yourself! I wished all the best for you in 2022 last New years day, and you’re crushing it! Bravo, bro! 🤙
I am retired drummer with great career and my best friend to this day got to study with Gregg for couple years. He said and still sez it was best experience in his life. You can hear the influence when he played and recorded with most underrated R&B group Blowin Smoke. From this interview I can see why. Thank you Rick and of course Gregg.
I’m late to this thread but u reminded me of what my friend said when I told him I used to be a drummer. He scoffed n said u will always be a drummer, lol. It’s true. Retired in name only. Peace.
Gregg, such an inspirational guy. A cool cat. At current Ringo tour love how he includes a handful of recognizable drum parts of popular song in his solo spot during Edgar Winter's Frankestein. And loving how he drops names of every drummer alive on this planet, including Alex Acuña, my paisano. Enthusiasm is a common word in this comment section.
Saw him at a clinic here in Denver last month! Aside from being a drumming legend , he’s such a great guy to be around and lights up any room he’s in with his positivity

There's a common trait to great drummers who play a lot and are always in demand: they know a lot about the history of drumming beats and clearly have spent a tremendous amount of time listening and learning from many drummers of the past. (I am reminded of Rick's great interview with Steve Jordan).
His Roseanna cover is absolutely killer. He can hang with all the big dogs you can think of. I believe he actually came up through music school with people like Steve Smith and Vinnie Colaiuta. Just a monster on drums, can play any style as a professional
That was really cool Rick thank you. I was particularly interested in the conversation around the high hats. I am not a drummer but, I grew up with two pretty good drummers and back in 1977 they turned me on to a band called Journey (in their original incarnation/no Steve Perry-still my favorite band of all time) and pointed out how the great Ansley Dunbar used his high hat on their first album to keep time rather than use the bass drum. I had to listen to that a couple of times with them pointing it out to me before I could hear what they were saying. REALLY blew my mind. That was the first time I was even aware that this was a hall mark of jazz drumming. I later became a big fan of jazz and have a much better understanding of the form but, loved hearing you and Greg get into it with all of your energy and passion. I hope this finds you and your family well Rick. Cheers, Peter St. John Hollister, CA
Have loved this channel for years, and feel privileged to hear Gregg break down so many grooves over several decades. True ‘fly on the wall’ moment in company of supremely talented musicians. Love it 😍
The chameleon of drummers. Now you know why Gregg got the RINGO gig. All those great legends playing all their greatest tunes. If you ever get a chance to see that show don’t pass it up I had the privilege to see Ringos All Stare Band when Burton Cummings was playing along with many other great players. . Gregg was incredible . He can literally play anything As a drummer of 46 years I can relate to the time it takes to reach this level. He’s got thousands of hours on the kit It’s really amazing to watch a life time of work . And he can name every drummer in history it seems. So he’s also studied the history of the instrument and the players He’s got it covered. Just an astonishing musician 👍👍👍
The way Gregg plays all these parts with the exact amount of energy and make it seem so effortlessly is out of this world! His passion for the drums is in every single stroke. Legend!

Around 1996 I had Gregg put on a drum clinic and he's still the same now as he was then. They say never meet your heroes because you'll end up disappointed, not in this case....he's absolutely a nice guy.
one of the nicest people in the business.. period.
Greg is a walking encyclopedia of drumming knowledge who can play the entire world book encyclopedia of drum licks
Gregg is such an outgoing, fun guy. Great video!
It's always great to find a drummer that plays their kit like an INSTRUMENT and not just as a metronome for the band. I love having my mind blown open to appreciate the depth and nuance involved in so may fields other than my own.
Gregg's passion is contagious! He sets the bar through the roof... There's a reason he's Ringo's drummer!
There’s a lifetime of material for any musician in this video. Thank you both so much for this!
Gregg is so infectious with his personality, knowledge, skill, and positivity.
I can't watch two video's with Gregg in a row, cause i must play the drums after the first vid:)
Is it just me or is Greg starting to look like a skinny Alex Lifeson?
@@mruncletheredge oh my gosh now I can't unsee it
Couldn't agree more.
If Gregg wasn't playing drums, I would still listen to him. Infectious, all around nice guy.
All the original drum grooves, without the concern about the video blockers. Genius!
Can’t believe how fast Gregg gets his thoughts out and executes. Love this!!!
Gregg is not just an amazing drummer but a super funny and endearing person 🙂
Absolutely!
Gregg should have his own late night show
Yes! such positive attitude; you just want to be friends with him :)
You were truly blessed that night. Victor Wooten is god-like.
@@vickis.9363 100%. Best bassist I’ve seen in person.
I saw Wooten play with his brother Roy "Future Man" Wooten and Bela Fleck in 2008. They played the 12 Days of Christmas in twelve different keys and 12 different time signatures. Mind blown.
@@vickis.9363 I’ve seen him with his brother a few times with the Flecktones, but that sounds special on another level!
It's fun to see someone that's so talented and still has so much joy for the instrument.
Introverted magician… cool
Exact same thing I said. 💯💯💯
A living encylopedia of drumming. What a great musician! He doesn't merely play the drums-he plays music on the drums.
Total mastery of dynamics... And the joy of sharing. What a great guy and underrated technician...
Most genuine fan of drums. He's like a kid in a candy store sharing his gifts with us.
A proper musician! Makes it look so easy and he's so relaxed. Genius!!!!
And SO enthusiastic.
As a fellow Dixon drums endorser, I am so happy to see one of my fave drummers showcasing these incredible drums. Gregg is THE Man!

@@DesignRhythm they really are incredible drums. They have a reputation from their last that isnt deserved-the new kits and products kick ass! Custom drums done to your exact specs. I’m in love with my kit.
Impressive.
This was a gift! THANK YOU!

Keep thinking like that and for you drumming will never get old !
If teachers had the we enthusiasm of greg, wowil I play guitar but he floored my
Rick, this has to be one of your top 5 videos!
Truly fantastic. 5-10 seconds of drum sampling with 10-15 seconds of great commentary. And every single second was entertaining.
Gregg ‘s greatest talent is being blessed with the ultimate positivity without it being overbearing or sappy. Truly a great musician and human being!
Gregg's love of music is infectious. I could listen to him talk about music for hours.
👍🥁👍DC
Km
Left hand btw the Tom and snare do you mean drumming on the hardware!?
@@bojangles6444 Top rim of Tom 1 and snare rim. It's a great flam Gregg is doing like that. Best, DC
Bravo, bro! 🤙
Well said.
Phil Selway post The Bends, is worth a mention.
Enthusiasm is a common word in this comment section.
hot dog
Saw him at a clinic here in Denver last month! Aside from being a drumming legend , he’s such a great guy to be around and lights up any room he’s in with his positivity
This guy just exudes pure joy and positivity while moving seamlessly between styles. This is one of my favorite Beato vids ever.
My lord Rick, what a homework assignment this is. There is literally years of inspiration in your production with Gregg!! Nicely done ✅

First off. Gregg has been a drummer whose name has been part of my musical journey when I was first a drummer and to see his passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and skills brought even further to the surface was such a treat with this video!! Thank you Rick for continuing to showcase stellar musicians and content in general! Please keep up the wonderful work you're doing!!!
Gregg's love of music is so contagious. What a musician!
I grew up in Gregg's neighborhood and graduated High School with his younger brother Matt(Elton's Bass Player) I can't watch this without grinning, ear to ear. The joy with which Gregg plays is magical in my opinion and he is so incredibly gifted and humble.
Absolute Pleasure watching this guy play. I couldn't believe the title, "with Gregg Bissonette."
Wow, speaking as a lousy guitar player, I am in awe of this guy and all drummers. What an incredible and insightful video for us non-drummers. Thank you Mr Beato and Mr Bissonette. It was like watching a close up magician.
That was fun Rick... Tell Gregg (and Matt) I said hello. Would be good to hear "Best Rhythm Sections"

Gregg's passion, knowledge, skill, and pure love of music is an absolute joy to witness.

A joy watching this master of the instrument.
Man, I could just watch videos like this all day... legends talking about legends and playing legendarily... it never gets old!
When a drummer's drums speak in effortless tone like this you know you are in the presence of a master.
It's so cool when we get to see someone like Gregg who talks with so much passion! He's having the time of his life when he's playing the drums!
I saw Ringo Starr and his all Starr Band yesterday and Gregg's solo was an amazing meddley of all those tributes. Flowing seamlessly...
Fool in the Rain too, even some of the best drummers out there struggle to actually play it the way Bonham did and he nails it in this video
He went to North Texas. Vinnie and Steve went to Berklee a few years earlier.
@@sethcashman1011 Ah, I couldn't remember where Steve and Vinnie went. All three good friends tho
Loved his work with Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey in Bass Extremes.
Cheers,
Peter St. John

Excellent ! Gregg might be on the top of the list of best drummers ever ! Passion and Joy !
I could watch Gregg for days. He is so technically proficient while being a wealth of knowledge and not coming off as a D-Bag know-it-all.
hello Richard how are you doing 😊
@@allysonhanks9159 hello...how are you?
He's super pleasant, and also talks just like Albert Brooks!
Just an astonishing musician 👍👍👍
this is completely mind-blowing. the way he plays everything perfectly is just ... .wow
What a supremely entertaining episode, Gregg is pure gold. A complete master…
