RIP Pebble: What To Wear Next [w/Joshua Vergara]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- The Pebble 2 might not have been the best smartwatch of 2016 -- but you could argue that it was indeed the most underrated smartwatch of the year. Now that the whole Pebble lineup has gone down the tubes in one of the saddest buyouts in mobile-tech memory, it’s time for a look back at one of the biggest success stories (and now, one of the biggest implosions) in wearables. Join me, Michael Fisher, and Android Authority's Joshua Vergara as we review - and pour a little out for - the Pebble 2 ... then stick around for our recommendations for the best smartwatch to replace it.
Thanks to Joshua Vergara and Android Authority for the collaboration!

I feel like Joshua Vergara should just go independent too
I think the same! Don't get me wrong, I love what the guys at AA do, but he is just that good!
Jonathan Servranckx Joshua is the only reason why I'm still subscribed to AA.
coolu32 He does vlogs you know;)
Negan Lannister Yeah, I hate that guy.
Kingslayer A
Looking forward to more collaboration with other youtubers.
Keep up the good work!
unrealRage I really to enjoyed this video. I agree with you!
unrealRage yeah he should do one with MKBHD !
Dhruv Bhatnagar done!
Vasudev Dubey haha yeah I saw that one. Fun video !

Let's face it: Nobody gave a shit about smart watches until the Pebble came out and showed everyone that a smart watch doesn't have to suck, and helped add momentum to the avalanche of wrist mounted technology.
Agreed.
I don't think so. The Pebble was a nerd-thing. Go out on the streets and talk to the people. I guess nearly nobody has ever heard of "Pebble", but nearly everybody has heard of the "Apple Watch". And I don't think, that Apple started developing their watch after the Pebble came out. Pebble was earlier than all the other companys - but they weren't good enough in selling their product to normal costumers. I love my Pebble Time. It is a great product. Too bad that there won't be a Pebble Time 2.
Lagomorpha, although I agree with your point about no average consumer really caring for the Pebble, I think you seem to forget how huge Pebble was as a project. For a long time it was Kickstarter's highest funded project (and might still be to this day, I'm not certain). Due to the wave this caused, and how hyped the device was--even if the hype did eventually die--I would say that the Pebble is more the cause of the smartwatch success, and less its offspring.
I know exactly three people who own and use a smartwatch (one Pebble Time Round, two Apple Watch) - so I won't say that there is a big "smartwatch success". Anyway. Yes, the Pebble was the highest funded project on KS. But what does that say? There were 78,471 Backers when the Pebble Time (still the most funded project on KS) came out - and Apple sold 3.9 million Apple Watches only in the third quarter of 2016 (in the same quarter they sold 45.5 million iPhones). The first Pebble was announced at KS in 2012 - at the same time there were already rumours about the "iWatch" in the media. So again: Yes, Pebble brought it's watch faster to life than Apple and Google did, but Apple had the bigger marketing budget and so most of the people never realised that there was a pretty cool smartwatch called "Pebble" and bought the ugly Apple Watch instead. Bad luck for Pebble - and for us, now that Pebble is gone. :-(
Wearing a pebble 2 right now thanks to rebble
2 of my most favourite UA-camrs together.
Same here. : )
It fucking blows that I won't be getting a Pebble Time 2 :(
huma dawii Me too. It sounded too good to be true.
yeah i was really looking forward to a time 2.
no one is saying they don't work at least to my knowledge they are just saying that in the future there wont be support there wont be servers to download faces or apps from the only thing you will get is the default apps and the default watch faces unless you previously did so. also no more updates to fix bugs and it may stop working on future versions of android it all depends.
I still am in shock, upset, and feel so lost :\
@CerebralFlux you can get a Pebble 2, or a Pebble Time, but a Pebble Time 2 doesn't exist. There's no "2" with a colored screen branded by Pebble.
I didn't think I'd like the idea of such a collab as much as I did. It's like a tiny, straight-to-the-point podcast! (as in how there are different voices and opinions)
Michael Fisher and Joshua Vergara combo is as exciting as Iron Man and Spiderman in MCU combo.
I'm keeping mine for as long I can.
I've already stopped wearing mine, because it gives me the sads.
How am I supposed to live without you, pebble?
I could hardly believe it
When I heard the news today
I had to come and get it straight from you
They said you were leavin'
Someone's swept your heart away
From the look upon your face, I see it's true
So tell me all about it, tell me 'bout the
plans you're makin'
Then tell me one thing more before I go
[Chorus:]
Tell me how am I supposed to live without you
Now that I've been lovin' you so long
How am I supposed to live without you
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been livin' for is gone
I Love mine it will keep IT forever don't care Fitbit
I wore a Gear Fit 2 for about 8 months since the announcement (and getting my money back from the Kickstarter) but last week I realized I still like the Pebble (original) better than anything on the market now. I ordered a Time Steel and am wearing that now. I think I'm going to order some more Pebbles and get them in hand while they're still available. Definitely a Round and probably a 2+HR also.
@@TheMrMobile rebble has continued pebble support into the future. 3$ a month to restore even voice
Ahh....Be solo Michael, I don't like anyone else or anyone else's voice in your Video. You are the best man!
My first dislike button click on your channel :(
Thanks for the feedback, but you know that disliking the video hurts my metrics and the channel health on the whole, right?
Whoever said that criticizing does not hurt. I know how he means and I too don't feel happy. I like your videos. Almost all of them, except this one :(
This is the same exact mentality from fans that forced him to quit Pocket Now.
Going to have to ditto on this one - and also make my first comment on a Mr. Mobile video. The personality and voice of your channel is lost when you add additional people to your videos. We get less of the person we came here to see.
Praveen Singh i respect yr opinion, but collaboration isn't that bad considering that joshua is really a good reviewer compared to the rest. I prefer micheal fisher to do what he likes rather than the idea being governed by others, and that's what my first thought of why he starts to open a youtube channel of it's own. That makes me to question though, what part of joshua that you don't like about?
I'm still wearing my time to this day, I ain't leaving my little guy.
Pebble is the BlackBerry 10 of smartwatches. Outstanding core-feature, reliable, off-mainstream, way too underrated and still no chance to stay
what a strange way of spelling webOS :p
theSyd Actually webOS was pretty cool and advanced for it's time. Kinda sad that the smartphone industry ended in a "duo-poly" of Android & iOS!
"Webo splash"....for the man who shaves his webos.
I was a HUGE Pebble fan back in the day and I just could not get anything else that didn't measure its battery in weeks, not days. Much as I love smartwatches, I have kept a close hold on my Pebble Time Steel, until something can provide its same level of functionality, with equal to if not better battery. Colour display included.
Genius, more tech UA-camrs should collaborate more.
Yep. Kinda like this or the UA-camr headphones video
Pixel exactly
I love seeing the tech community coming out to be so vocal about the loss of great innovation
Man I miss the Pebble. What a fully featured first attempt at a wearable that was taken too early from our shelves. Maybe we’ll never see another Pebble in its original form, but it’s my hope that Fitbit will revive the name at some point in the future.
Agreed, my resentment for Fitbit is exclusively in the fact that they closed pebble.
And Fitbit never did...
Pebble will be remembered
alexdiezg I have it ON, and it works GREAT! Chill. We have at least a year to get this squared away. Anyone want to lend your particular skills? Let's start something AWESOME!
awesome collab guys! I didn't get used to smartwatches... since I always have my phone with me
Michael nice review happy holidays
LMAO Vector got bought by Fitbit too
You can get the Luna for $199 on Amazon.
Yep - link is in the descrip. I didn't notice the Amazon price difference (vs the official Vector site) until after publication though, so thanks!
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] would the Vector Luna be the go to watch, against the Ticwatch 2? Or have you not touched the Ticwatch at all?
Haven't seen a Ticwatch in person yet.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] thanks!
Johnson Williams Just did some digging, and I'll have you know that INCREDIBLY biased "comparison" on the Engadget site was written by someone from the TicWatch company... you know, just in case anyone else reads it.
It's a damn shame Pebble went the way of the dodo bird.
I'm still rocking my 1st Gen Pebble that I got from Kickstarter. I'm not gentle with it by any means... it has its share of accidental drops, bumps, scrapes, and is still ticking. My father, brother, and nephews are also still using their 1st Gen Pebbles as well.
Meanwhile, my friend (who is no clumsier than I am) has already gone through two different android wear watches and is now using a Samsung Gear S3. I wanna see how long that one is going to last him.
In the end... when support does become completely nil after 2017, I think I will switch to a Samsung Gear. The only reason why I would take such a drastic move, is because I absolutely love Samsung Pay... and the reaction it garners at the register of a Mom & Pop shop that doesn't have a fancy point of sale system, let alone an EMV chip reader. Wide eyes of amazement everywhere I go.
But that Pebble will hold a special place in my heart when it comes to tech, and hopefully with its demise, other companies will remember what it did best at, battery life, stable software, apps that worked, and notifications... which inspired a loyal fan base. That's what it's ultimately about... as Whoopi Goldberg said in Sister Act, "It's about getting butts in the seats."
So it’s 2019 now, and to the best of my knowledge, Pebble is almost completely dead. The App Store and watchface store are both no longer around, and I’m pretty sure the website had been taken over by Fitbit too. This makes me extremely sad, as the proud owner of a Pebble smartwatch 😢: RIP Pebble 😭
Just switch over to rebble
@@HotwheelsDaniel That's what I did. I have an original Pebble I got when the company first jumped to Kickstarter. Just found a decent price, still in the box Pebble 2 I plan on using with Rebble as well. You can get back the voice and weather functionality by paying $33 a year to help keep Rebble up and going.
Until the rest of these Smartwatch companies get their head out of their ass and provide me with stellar Notifications, the ability to reply with voice, and Pebble level of Battery at a minimum, I will keep buying a dead smartwatch because they got it right. I don't need 1000 features eating my battery, or a phone replacement. I need a Pebble.
Panthy0n same here I just recently bought a pebble 2 and still loving it
I'm a big fan of pebble. It's the best smart watch to remain the main feelinh of WATCH, not a small size of smartphone on your wrist. When I received an email from pebble team it'd broke my heart. Just hope and look forward to a reborn of pebble from Fitbit. 😭😭😭😭😭
imagine Fisher, Vergara and Brownlee in one video about tech, i would watch it for hours
Pebble is being unofficially supported by the Rebble group and it's technically still workable.
Just thought it would be good to say.
aaand the vector watch is now bought by Fitbit as well. shit.
Yeah i found Vector yesterday, and thought i found my pebble alternative and then i saw, BAM fitbit bought it, too. :(
I wish Fitbit went bankrupt before they acquired pebble.
WojtekTechTips Pebble was going bankrupt.
So far still waiting if fitbit even utilized pebbles idea so screw them for life
>google vector
>also bought by Fitbit
Bruh
So basically I need an Apple watch to replace my Pebble time... great.
I'm determined to keep my Pebble Time alive for as long as I can. I have a feeling after Pebble stops supporting it for good the open source community will take over updates and what not.
It sucks that they are killing the Pebble after 2017. I really like mine because it's so simple to use with the buttons without even looking at the watch, specially when changing tracks while listening to music. I also love the shortcuts. I have a shortcut for stopwatch, timer, music boss and calendar, I love how fast I can open those apps, specifically when working out.
I was really hoping there would be a Time Round 2.
Interesting collab. Very innovative MrMobile.
Battery have lost a bit of it's core strenght, but in 2023 this watch is still is the best thing i've bump into. Only thing i changed? The wristband. Twice. But not from og to og... I just couldn't bear the suffocating silicone😂❤
It's 2020, my Pebble Round is still going strong. It's still my main watch.
How do you get updates, etc? Since the App Store is dead do you have full functionality? Thanks
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY GEAR S2!!! The bezel is far and away the best way to interact with a smart watch! Not to mention the display is top notch and it the UI is a breeze... I got a killer deal on my S2, 100$ on sale from Amazon a while back. If you have patients take the time to find a good deal on a Samsung Gear S2. You won't be disappointed... At least not if you only spend 100$ like I did!!! LOL I was gonna look into getting an S3 then i saw that price tag.... YIKES!! I think ill wait a year or so for the price to drop... But if I had an extra 350 bucks I'd def grab it...
I bet in the future Pebble watches would be worth alot.
thankfully prices are low in eBay/Mercari
Vector is now (also) bought out by Fitbit, and they're killing them as well. I HATE YOU FITBIT! I'm never going to buy one of your products, and I'll never forget how you snuffed out your competitors.
Funny enough, vector just got BOUGHT too by Pebble
I'm kinda hating FitBit now, they murder the promising startups to kill potential competition
I have been waiting to see your review on your next move with Vector Watch. Apparently, FitBit has just bought another long-battery-life-watch company. So, what would be our next option??
Now that Rebble has come out, are you guys going to still wear your pebbles since you loved them so much?
Yes.
So, I don't have much of an opinion on the Pebble and its fate to be honest. However, I just came here to say... Damn, you have a voice made for reviews!
Dif-tor heh smusma, MrMobile :-)
I've said it before and I'll say it again.. Michael Fisher is THE BEST tech reviewer on the Planet! It doesn't get any better believe me. Keep up the great work man!
It's 2021 and still no good alternative.
just another Pebble lol
hope Rebble can keep chugging along
Anything today?
It's 2023 and still no good alternative.
RIP Pebbles. RIP Bambam. Goodbye flintstones.
Pebble is very stupid, why they didnot search investor to support pebble, the first iknow about smartwatch is pebble, i didnot need smartwatch like android wear and custom with another vendor, battery life so suck, so expensive we can get one phone, overload feature
apple watch like lifestyle, social and more expensive than android wear
So to founder pebble, sell your company, enjoy your life and good bye
#IamStillUsingPebbleInMyWrist
Annnddd now TechCrunch is reporting that Fitbit bought Vector... SMDH
A cheap smart watch that focused on doing the core features right without gimmicks, this could be you oneplus...
I'm still using as of 2/26/2020
is this a dream? 2 of my top fav tech reviewer are collaborating?
someone wake me up please.
Who else is here because they saw this as a recommended video as they were replacing their Pebble battery in 2020?
I hope the community can keep the Pebble going, such a great watch with great potential, software side is pretty much dead.
There have been custom firmwares for the Pebble such as PebbleBits, I'm not too sure what the custom firmware scene is like currently for Pebble as of late.
Edit: There is also Gadgetbridge as well, which is another option.
There are some really dedicated people working on making sure our watches work and are as enjoyable in the future as they are now.
And there's one more thing. Perhaps Fitbit will actually use what they bought and come up with a great product. That seems unlikely but you never know.
heyb0o0o0o0o0o0osS isn't Rebble also a similar thing? Is it different from Gadgetbridge?
I got so used for the pebble button layout out I kept trying to press the back button on my gear s3 haha
Great video Mr mobile!
pls get your hands-on the tic watch 2.I really want to watch your review of it! 😀😎
It looks cool, doesn't it?
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] oh yes! 😀
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] simply beautiful and functional especially the Onyx version..You'll love it for sure!!
Goodbye Pebble and now goodbye Vector... Damn you Fitbit!!!!
One of the reasons i didn't buy pebble, it has no Arabic notification. Currently, my gear s2 works perfectly and supports Arabic notifications.
Well, thank you Michael for saying goodbye to one of the most innovative company's in smartwatch tech.
For someone who isn't as well off, this was the best smartwatch to could buy. It was convinient and easy to use. And it also was cheap.
I'll miss pebble. A lot more than any other smartwatch I have owned.
I'll stick to my Pebble Time. :)
I will stick to my Pebbles too, man. The fact that support is given up at some point does not mean that they will stop being incredible smartwatches for your needs and entertainment.
man i see you everywhere
so is a good ideia if i buy one today ?
Fidget Spinner I'm just gonna buy a pebble time😂👌
Fidget Spinner
To be more accurate, they should have named the Pebble, Bezel.
i had a hint for this collab from Mr.Mobile's last video on mate 9. can't believe I'm right! 😅😅
bought a pebble time in 2019 Love it.
And pebble steel in 2021. I love this one even more
People with small wrists, especially women, have few (Android compatible) smartwatch options. I'm glad I snatched up a Pebble 2, but I'm disappointed that I won't be receiving my Pebble Core...but I'm glad I got my refund!
still laughs in rebble
Now I really want to see a Pocketnow and Mr Mobile collab
the TicWatch 2 is fantastic... check out my review. Also check out the Xiaomi Amazfit Pace if you are a runner.
So it seems that Fitbit also bought Vector....
Fitbit bought out Vector Watch too, so much for that.
What now? Fitbit just bought vector!
This was just a pleasant video to watch.
Literally just got my pebble time today, new and put rebble on it. Yes its completely just as good as you remember with battery life to boot.
Used the original, then the Pebble Steel, and just bought a Pebble Time Steel. Would have loved a Time 2 with that bigger screen, but only around 5 were made.
Josh and Mikey
loved the collab
Mr. M, do you still use a Moto. device as your daily?
I hop back and forth too much to have a true DD, but I use the loaner Moto Z as often as I can, yes.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] May I ask , Why? what is so good about the Moto Z that entices you?
goodbye vector...hello fitbit..?
Goodbye Vector. now what?
I sold my Pebble watches and I used the money to buy an Apple Watch as I have an iPhone.
A bad move, in my opinion.
when is the review for vector coming to your channel?
Well, so much for that.. Fitbit just bought them too.
I never had a pebble but much respect !
Say what you will about Smartwatches coming a long way in the few years they've been around, but I still think most pale in comparison to the overall package you got with Pebbles.
See Pebble did a few things differently than the others - they didn't focus on putting the biggest, flashiest, highest resolution display out there on your wrist - instead they put a more-than-usable monochrome "e-Paper" LCD. The build, while certainly not as refined as some others, was still sturdy, and inexpensively made, lowering costs for both production and sales drastically. The software, while a bit limited feature-wise, was exceptionally well done, so you actually had a reason to use those features, instead of just boasting about all the half-assed things your smartwatch could theoretically do (like so many others).
And really, the Pebble did all of those things with a bit of charm - the engineers and designers made it a joy to use with fun little quirks and plenty of playful touches that made them so unique. And the fact that they were cross-platform capable made them all the more valuable.
When revisions and new models came, they just kept on improving on everything they did right the first time, where others continued to fall short.
It's a shame that Pebble is gone now, but what's even worse is that there won't be quite another company like them again - mark my words.
Still, enjoy them while you can.
Cheers, and happy holidays!
Ooh! My 2 favourite tech reviewers: Josh + Michael!
I didn't even know there was a Pebble 2. maybe that's why the company failed.
Yes it was. Also because there company was run threw Kickstarter and they managed there money berry badly.
Hi Michael! What's up?
1:00 I remembered the old times when I put my old Nokia 2280 standing on a table and called it just to make it "walk" with the vibration motor.
Haha yeah
can't wait till smartwatches go away totally as a thing.
For me, I feel like any smartwatch over 300$ is overpriced, so even though I like the gear s3, I'll probably get refurbished is I decided to buy it.
Vector got bought by Fitbit too...
The Apple Watch has a nice hybrid operation between touchscreen and button controls with the Digital Crown. It's really intuitive and easy to use the Crown for scrolling und the Touchscreen just for small actions like pressing the Play/Pause button. And compared to the Gear S3 the Apple Watch has the best third party App support of all Smartwatches. I know it's not cheap but definitely the best Smartwatch out there, if you have an iPhone of course.
Right now is the time to buy a Pebble! It's going to get cheaper!
Well even though sooner or later some services may no longer work, it'll still function as a normal smartwatch. You might just have to side load watch faces and apps, but other than that it's fine. That's why, even though Pebble is now officially dead, I'm going to upgrade to a new Pebble and retire my original, since screen tearing has been an issue for me :/
Finally my two idols pitched together! 😂 Jou and fisher.. you are simply superb!
do a review on a citzen watch.
Can you have spotify?
Good to see Michael and Josh making collaborations like this. Definitely my two favorite UA-camr's 👏
Well the two guys I truly trust, well done
The Apple Watch is slightly appealing to me, but I'll never switch to iPhone for as long as I live so I suppose that's out, unless I can get it to work by some surprise.
I love my Pebble Time.....Damn...Damn...Damn...! I didn't believe in the "wearable" craze...the Pebble was an experiment for me. I wear it regularly. Thanks for the options.....
Watching this video, it makes me sad even though I now have an Apple Watch, I miss my original pebble and I was so close to getting a pebble time 2
Pebble officially announced that they are going to close their app from June 30th 2018 and I have a classic pebble. I am not going to sell it to anyone or throw it away oneday because this is a product that define the smartwatch genre and it has made a difference to me a lot.
android wear and tizen should used E-Ink to success. they are great, but charge a watch one time a day? no thanks! that why i love pebble.
i got a refurbished gear s2 on amazon for $120 and it works like new. also looks like new. i got it to replace my pebble time.
I want pebble2 smartwatch.
is it safe to buy without warranty on Amazon
