Crunch time: can a new Pebble smartwatch make it in an Apple world?

- Опубліковано 23 лют 2015
- Pebble is going back to Kickstarter to launch its new watch, Pebble Time, available starting today. The new watch is slimmer and curvier than Pebble's earlier models, and for the first time includes a color display and microphone for voice control. There's also a new software platform with a completely redesigned interface based around the concept of a running timeline. Pebble's ambitious goals don't end with this watch: it's launching a whole platform that aims to be the center of your connected world. It's going to have to attain those goals and more if it wants to remain relevant in the next generation of smartwatches coming this year.

Joe Schlatt
goddamn
I wonder if he got one
Thanks for this crucial info Jschlatt !
pebble is goated
How to win the smartwatch market?
1. Take this new pebble.
2. Make it round.
3. Make it fancy looking with metal build.
4. ???
5. Profit.
Pebble is the only company that really understands the core ideology of the *smartwatch*: it is not supposed to be a phone on your wrist.
You sir, have just described perfectly what I've wanted to say for a long time.
Actually there is this withings smart watch its more like it i feel.
I real smart but also look like a real watch
***** How did you miss P twice?
***** What?
***** He's asking how it is relevant to his argument.
I'm very tolerant with regards to how The Verge covers Apple, but is this video title for real?
The title alone allowed me to unsubscribe. Been on the verge of doing it for awhile now.

It doesnt make me angry or anything, but why not have the video focus on what Pebble does rather than the competitors, or a competitor that hasnt even been released yet? The Pebble watch is definitively unique.
ahpadt To be fair, I think the video spent 95% of its time covering pebble, and only mentioned its competitors in a very appropriate fashion. The Apple love in the title is overdone however.
You can't deny that Apple runs the mobile tech world. They defined the smart phone and defined the tablet market, you would be ignorant to say that they won't do the same with the wearable market too.
Tim Apple is not even in the wearable market just yet
Pebble is the only smartwatch that truly deserves my money
Those animations * - * unbelievable beautiful !
Apple Watch isn't even out and it is already Apple world?
Love the design of the software. So playful and smooth.
This looks better than Android Wear and Apple Watch, but why no touchscreen.
Because i touch screen would drain too much battery
William Valentine Yep, that's the con for having a good battery life.
After using both Android wear and Pebble extensively, I can definitely say that there is a huge benefit to having the buttons as opposed to a touch screen. Battery life is better and being able to use the device without taking gloves off or looking is another huge thing. Useability is just better in a lot of situations. That being said, there are definitely pros to touch screens as well, but on a watch I think I prefer the buttons.
Zack Geragosian I think is a matter of the user. I'm gonna try both before choosing one. But still, I think that the smartwatch OS's need to be more mature to buy one.
I'll add that having used both the pebble and the moto 360, I'm not convinced that touchscreen is the future of smartwatches. In it's current state, it feels messy. Events trigger when I don't mean them to, the fact that there are three ways to turn on the watch (tap, button, raise wrist) often means I touch something on the screen moments after I turn it on by mistake. I miss the buttons of the pebble a bit.
I was just about to buy an original model Pebble tomorrow. So glad I stumbled across this video. I will hold off on my purchase to get this one instead.
BadLactose Same!
Lucky b*tches :'(. Got mine in March for my bday and then a few weeks later heard about the Pebble Time. So sad :'(
Well I got my pebble classic for my bday on the day the pebble time came out. But i will get one these weeks or so...
This is why I love Pebble, they focus on what people want, make it as close to perfect as possible, and keep it cool and simple and its own device paired with a phone, not a tiny annoying phone on the wrist.
Although it's not the _best_ looking watch out there, it's nice to see that Pebble sat back, assessed the trends and provided meaningful updates to their products - not necessarily adding bells and whistles just out of loyalty to buzz words. I'd love to see a more attractive design for their next iteration though, and possibly a touch screen as long as it somehow doesn't mess with the battery life.
Holyshit. The UI miles better than the competition. I didn't know color e-paper could be that fluid. This is definitely my next.
Just backed this project on Kickstarter today. Can't wait to get it in May.
I love the new pebble, I think I'll actually buy one now, I've been waiting for someone to come out with a smart watch I thought was worth my money and this one might be it
I am SO pumped for this.
It looks REALLY promising, I want one!
♥ Those awesome animations.. for me... it much better than Android Wear.. 7 days battery life is more than awesome...
looks sick with so many different themes on it . it gonna make every one want one.
Okay, I must admit, I was initially sceptical but this looks awesome! The timeline is brilliant! The animations work so well with the glitch e-paper displays! They really managed to strike a balance between the plain, glanceable UI that still delivers on substance! Even the design of the watch is not too shabby. I wish the UI didn't use those colours randomly and just stuck to B&W like in the previous OS (developers can use the colours if they wanted to) but that's just my taste.
Can a new Apple smartwatch make it in a Pebble world?
Seems so.
@@JeremyHeberlein This comment clearly didn't age well
Animations on that thing look great
every day i miss you
Does someone know what is the background music at the start of the video? I like it a lot :)
2:44 Use an Apple Product to make a pebble product xD
Pebble definitely has a place in this market. For someone like me who uses two different smartphones (work and personal) it is nice to be able to have that cross platform integration. I cant wait to be able to add this to my tech collection!
i actually had an original pebble and i loved it, simple it did what i needed it to do and the battery lasted forever
I think this will be another "best smartwatch you can buy" in 2015. A smartwatch that just works. Well done Pebble. I'm wiling to purchase one of these when it comes out to the public.
The new UI design looks amazing and very interesting when compared to the UI of the Android Wear UI. The new design of this UI looks fun and not boring. I am very excited for what pebble has in store in the future because they are most certainly going in the right direction!
greatly appreciated the video..good and simple than many others.. Great work The Verge Keep it up..
I think it's great! Beautiful UI, nice design, reasonable price and 1 week battery life. Don't like the bezels though.
thank god for this vid, it makes me 99% sure that getting a pebble watch won't become out of style shortly after being release and I am more sure of getting one myself!
that's so cool! should get one!
This smartwatch has character, it's simple yet complex, gets the job done and then some, and seems worth my money. Thank God I came across this video. I was saving for the Apple Watch but this seems so much more worth it and it's cheaper?! Count me in :)
Great video, cool looking watch.
Very nice....love it
my pebble is really beat up and I was going to buy a new one this year but now I feel like this is a must buy!
my old smartwatch will be for work where as this one will be for my social life
I love the timeline idea and understand why they went with the hardware they did. This is by far the best smart watch I've seen because it doesn't try to be something it's not. The only thing I would like to see is for it to be more visually appealing and more fashionable. The white one in the video was my favorite so something more in that direction I think would be best.
Good luck Pebble, Godspeed to you!
Is there any chance of around version?
The shots that said the date was 19th February.
So the verge already was shooting this before the official watch is out on kickstarter !?
after seeing this im getting excited for the new OS. I was very pessimistic about the timeline view. This video helped resolved my concerns with the way existing apps would incorporate with it.
Most impressed. Very smooth and supposed best smartwatch battery life. Must Buy
Very well made video!
larger display and touch screen, maybe even make it round and it's pure gold!
i love how they are making it a watch first and a smart watch second
Looking forward to Pebble Time. Excited...
Im from the future. They are dead
Super Awesome, I want one.
Ive backed it cant wait till may!
Can anyone here tell me the NAME of the SONGS The Verge used in this video?
does it have function of smart alarm?
The wearable market is starting to open up to everyone now, but Pebble still has a slight advantage with a few more years experience in the smartwatch business. Would really love to see Android Wear step up its game as well, as there are some really nice-looking smartwatches that run it out there.
NICE! I'll be getting one of these instead of the Apple Watch. I'm glad I saw this. Thanks guys.
What I'd the super mario world watchface named? It looks awesome!
looking past the title, I thank this was a pretty good overview.
What about tracking capability improvements, especially sleep
I absolutely love my Pebble. 10\10 Will be buying the next version :D
This guy basically said we started it first. BOSS
Wen Liang they didn’t though. Sony had a smartwatch before them.
I have the original Pebble and love it.
The new Pebble is exactly what I wanted it to be.
I love this company they make lots of sense and they are so far the only Smartwatch company that gets it.
I really like this old user interface
I have a pebble, it's great, very reliable, they've worked out a lot of the connection drops. I will definitely pick up an Apple watch, but will probably get a pebble time for the days I forget to charge the Apple watch.
I love the 8 bit screen graphics of the pebble time. But i hope it could be a touch screen.
I wish there was more screen and less bezel. That being said I really like the color screen and the animations. The way it moves looks fun. =)
The screen reminds me of Qualcomm's Mirasol display used on the Toq..
Please tell me it's still very very waterproof so I can kitesurf/surf with it?
To be honest the software looks GREAT!
Which apps are they showing here?
They look great!
I want this watch so bad!
these guys will have meetings just to us the functions on the pebble :)
Is it available only from the internet?
I like what pebble is doing. Keeping it simple and gradually improving is way better.
I'm glad technology on the wrist is being work on by so many companies. i think everyone(developers/consumers) is trying to make something amazing from something thats fad or not used very much. I think developers and consumers think the next big thing has to be on your wrist when it doesn't. Where's the "smart clothing"? I want notifications on my jacket. My gloves should let me control my phone and my car. My hat should display my music and post.
A actual good smart watch that I'll be interested in buying.
I love this new Pebble
does it show te time also??
Does this mean we can expect a full review soon? I don't know the usual timetable between video previews and full reviews
I had a pebble steel, sold it for the moto 360, and am seriously considering ditching that for the new pebble. I think it's awesome.
I love this thing. I was never excited for a pebble product until now. I know the design is rather polarizing, and the screen isn't something with a likeness to apple's or google's watches, but as we're constantly reminded, 2 sizes don't fit all. I totally agree with Dan about the animations being whimsical, and I think I like that part the best. This thing doesn't try to take itself too seriously, but the pebble time, along with its creators, really seem to know what they're about. Multiple OS compatibility, long-ass battery life, what's not to love?
Looking back at what a watch really used to embody, I'm reminded of this Swatch I used to own. Leather band, playful yet practical face. It wasn't some fancy expensive Rolex or some super capable, overly complex digital timex piece, it just worked while being just a little bit different, and I loved it more than any timepiece I've ever owned since then (minus the mustache clock in my room). I believe the pebble is new form of that Swatch. People will buy different watches for their own totally respectable reasons. Me? I'm buying that smartwatch that's just a bit different but a smartwatch that just works. I think I'll enjoy every second with it.
The only thing pebble has on the apple watch and android wear: battery life and cross platform between two OS. I'd buy it for my little cousin. Looks darn cute. I love my original pebble but I thought they would do more than this.
"It looks like a Tamagotchi on your wrist."
Bwahahahahaha! Good one!
A touchscreen is a battery drainer for smartwatches so at least it should have a good battery life. can it still run Tasker tasks?
I find the original pebble cute in the same way I find the 1984 Macintosh.
Lirón Damir, smart dude....actually the rest of team very smart....
Anyone know the name of the song that starts at 4:39 of this video?
I miss this 💔
Honestly, I don't mind the way the Verge talks about Apple, but that title. Seriously? Anyway, the second that watch comes out, I'm so getting it. My only problem with previous Pebbles was the fact that it had no color(not that that's a bad thing, I'm just very used to color displays) and the design of the UI and how you could only dismiss notifications and almost nothing else. Now that you can actually reply to texts, and the UI looks really pretty and it has color, and dat battery life. It's 100% sold for me.
I am so gonna get that 👌
planning to buy this. awesome technology. very sleek too.
I would wait until the pebble time 2
RocketheReptile I have a pebble 2 and it's great
Hell yeah. I love pebble because it works so much better than the other two competitors. I dont have to charge this every night, and I dont have to worry about getting it wet. Now it has a color screen? Count me in. Its a great casual everyday watch. If I want something nice for a party, thats what I have my Skagen for.
awesome ... i bet it will be good!
I'll wait for the steel model which it'll come by Sep or Oct
I think Pebble is going to get it more right about the smartwatch. I believe they are going to be a cool peripheral that complements your phone (or tablet? Laptop?) instead of replace them. The Apple watch seems to want to be an impressive conversation piece and a premium piece of jewelry. It won't flop, but it won't expand the concept.
The Apple watch is not even on the market yet, how the freaking hell is wearables an Apple world?
I don't like the bezel design, but I still would choose this one over the original pebble...
When I initially read up on this and saw pictures, I thought they were backtracking on the design and wasn't a fan of the look of the os changes. Now that I'm seeing it in motion, #iWANT! Looks WAY better than the Apple watch with one day battery life Lol
If this had the design of the Moto 360, oh man would I love it.
That matte grey border should be colorful shiny plastic.
gonna buy it.
So many smart watches yet no Omnitrix.
At least there should be an omnitrix theme for these smart watches.
I love pebble not because theyre better than other companies - I love them because the original Pebble is by far the cheapest smartwatch on the market and still provides awesome functionality. If they could make something like this but much cheaper, I'd love it to death.
I'm sold! Take my money!
i really like the pixely look and snappy animation! i hope they make a metal round version, similar to moto 360 but without the "flat tire" bezel and not that big when it comes to size
Strange...You predicted there next device
ItzMeRocket they all got my suggestions, which is nice x)
Haha, if only it were that easy to convince someone to help you with something ridiculous
ItzMeRocket I do not see how wanting to improve the look of the device is "ridiculous"
I never implied that it is.
