Fully agree! I love the fact that Linus and company could really get and have anything in the tech space, but he stands behind a project like this for the same reasons I believe in.
You can get 95% of the functionality of smartwatch with a $30 fitness tracker that you don't even need to pair with your phone. If you really need to see texts on your wrist you can pair it but block all other permissions. There is a very real reason smartwatches are ignored by the vast majority of society, as well as a very good reason why despite that, these companies haven't ditched them. They send plenty of marketable data back to them without needing to be paired to your phone.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how short the ad segments in this channel are. The sheer fact that it doesn't take 3 minutes makes me way more likely to actually get hooked.

I absolutely LOVE my Pebble Time Steel. Do I wish it had heart rate monitoring, gps, and NFC tap to pay? Sure! But it brings features like several day battery life with an always on display, physical buttons, fully custom watch faces and an open app store that are impossible to find all in one package. I would totally back some of these projects when there's a more clear feature set outlined. Thanks for featuring projects like this. It's fantastic to see that there's a market for stuff like this.

Love this idea! I've never been keen on overly complicated smart watches. But a connected dumb watch which just gives you better access to commonly used features like music control and maps is brilliant!
tracking heart rate with a wearable watch is a bad idea unless you want it so tight that blood wont reach your hands. most commercial solutions are often 10 but sometimes 20 beats per minute off!
Try a hybrid watch like a Withings or Casio. AFAIK Withings has pretty good privacy practices thanks to being European and hybrid watches look basically like a normal watch except they have some sensors too
I love these projects that offer big tech conveniences without the privacy invasion. Glad you support it too. I'd love regular updates on the pine phone as well.
