- THE FUTURE BITES, out now: stevenwilson.lnk.to/TheFuture...
Video directed by Miles Skarin, produced by Crystal Spotlight: crystalspotlight.com
"SELF is about our new age of narcissism and self-obsession, one in which a human race that used to look out with curiosity at the world and the stars now spends much of its time gazing at a little screen to see themselves reflected back in the mirror of social media. In that sense everyone now can take part in the notion of celebrity, and has the potential to share their life with an invisible mass of people they will never meet. The video takes things further by exploring the idea that anyone can now project a version or “self” that has no bearing on reality, and by using only well known faces the deception is made transparent." - Steven Wilson
"In our early discussions about the Self video, we were talking about the concept of identity in the digital age, how your face is not only your key to a lot of the media you consume, it represents who you are - or who you pretend to be in your online personas. One of the most intriguing new developments in recent years have been the ability to create deepfakes, where a computer runs a machine learning algorithm to predict what one face would look like in another’s pose. Anyone with the right tools and ability can now turn themselves into anyone else, so what does that mean for identity?" - Miles Skarin, Director
Lyrics:
Self-help and self-aware
Self-made millionaire
Turn it up and tone it down
Entertain like a fucking clown
Self-image and self-belief
Selfish acts between the sheets
Self has no sense of tact
Self is too self-detached
We are self, the self that loves itself now
We are self, I only see myself now
Self-absorbed and self-obsessed
If not me then someone else
Self sees a billion stars
But still can only self-regard
We are self, the self that loves itself now
We are self, I only see myself now
(I am the universe)
We are self, the self that loves itself now
We are self, I only see myself now
You’re a genius.
Love it, for me you are a true inspiration for making music!

Strange how Tom Cruise and Paul McCartney's faces fits perfectly with the anatomy of Steven's face. And the Bowie at the end was a touch of genius.
Pretty sure they were using Deep Fake technology on this vid, so that's how it worked so well. It's meant to adapt someone else's face to whatever face you want.
@@michaelgiordano2458 i know, but my point it's while in the other famous faces it's noticeable the use of deep fake (the lines in the faces, the way their fits or not in the Steven's face), Tom Cruise and Paul McCartney's faces fits so well that you could say it's them and not Steven. It's the best use of deep fake, i mean.
Steven Wilson somehow looks like Tom Cruise. You can find it in MI4

And the worst thing about it is that most people will miss the point. Like you, apparently.
@@rbeforme I was only having a laugh jeez
I love how he ends with david Bowie's face. The only one who isn't alive out of all the faces.
Apparently he appeared on cnn the next day..lol
It was a bit creepy... but cool ;)
Bowie was all about the Changes, he had many different Selfs over his career. The version here looks like a mix of a few of them, not a single one.
This kinda sounds like Fame so that way it's a tribute
Don´t forget Paul. I mean the real Paul.
Bowie would have liked this. I love the near blinklessness of this.
Steven Cruise makes me feel very uncomfortable...
Hahaha I loved that combo.
Indeed. That was the one that disturbed me the most!
Lololol
It's the one who blended most naturally, that's why it hit that ~uncanny valley~ spot I guess
I'm mostly just wondering and struggling to find out if they did the tooth.
I dont think there is a musician more creative than Steven Wilson in our days!!!Great song and video!!!
Steven Wilson is building upon an already phenomenal catalogue with this album! The sound is relevent and futuristic and to me, it belongs perfectly in a dystopian cyberpunk world.
Scarlet Johanson with beard still looks good, actually...
I felt a bit uncomfortable with this one :)
You Steven, are not just a musician, you are a unique artist with a beautiful sense of critique to point out all that's wrong with our society and thank you for that. Your work should be written in school books so that children could have an actual perception of state of the world today. Thank you again for sharing your impeccable talent with us!
And also he's a musician too.
this guys musical journey never ends.
Those Backing Vocals.
yeah they actually really work here where in other songs I'm still just like...eh. like in Emminent Sleaze they're almost too nursery rhymey but in here they feel spooky and ethereal. Excellent song. unnerving lyric video. 9/10

I like how it ended with David Bowie's face. Wilson's a legend, so was Bowie!
It's a beautiful tribute.
Steven Wilson has a thing for Bowie.. This isn't the first song that has a reference to Bowie
This video is disturbing & a masterpiece at the same time.
masterpiece reallly ??????
@@Taklalak Yes. Steven is not an actor and he did a terrific job with his facial expressions and movements.
@@Taklalak I'm not a Wilson fan boy but this video is pretty freaking awesome. Super creepy.
I'm not sure you understand what "masterpiece" really means... :D
WHY IS THIS DISTURBING TO YOU? ARE YOU CONVICTED YET?
Bowie at the end gave me chils.
Bowie.... love him..
People watching this in the 1980's are having their minds completely blown.
Imagine deep fakes 30 years from now.
They can be extremely precise already, just depends on the work put unto them and the variety of images used for it to be more 3D accurate
By then it will be done with holograms.
Honestly, we can do much better right now and it's quite unnerving. That said, I'm fairly certain that organizations intent on manipulating information have found deepfakes to be an unnecessary expenditure of time and resources when social media makes achieving their goals much easier.
Deep danger
There won't be any fakes by then
Who's here after Kendrick's new MV?
I just discovered that video and inmediatly thought of this one, both geniuses, you think Kdot got inspired by SW?
Really enjoying the new album after a few listens..... and that is coming from a hardcore PT and Prog fan. 😎
@Klaas Vos yes. 😁
Why would you not, honestly? It's fresh, creative music. I think most "Prog" fans are hilariously unprogressive and want everything to sound out of a Rush album. We should enjoy bands taking risks and going places we don't necessarily like. Good for you, man. This album is really good.
@@diegoleiva7242 Es cuestión de gustos, no solo de encasillarse en un sonido en particular. No todo tiene por qué gustarte
It's not good. This sounds like it came out of a musical processor. There's 2 or 3 good songs on the album. A crap album means the band you like took a year hiatus, might as well have.
I could hear some Bowie's and then, I could see some Bowie too
genius video and great track
simply fantastic
Absolutely love this man's work

Great twist on the ending of the Black or White video by Michael Jackson
If Michael Jackson wouldn't have done this ...the first..
Excellent!!!
Brilliant as always......
I just love Steven Wilson's new album The Future Bites. I received the limited red vinyl version from my local record store last Friday. I've been listening the album several times since Friday. It sounds better the more I listen to it.
I have the exact same feeling about the new album - its getting better and better
I had this feeling with all SW albums. I find it meh at first glance, but the more I listen, the more i start to enjoy/love. So knowing this fact from past albums, i listened to 'The Future Bites' 5 times non stop before I gave my opinion. 😁
I'll do the same, friend.
Steven, your music matures as we all do around. This is outstanding album. And Self is my favorite song. Great video as well. Remember your live performances in Chicago. Porcupine Tree at Park West and then you at The Vic. Outstanding shows. I discovered your music thanks to Piotr Kaczkowski from Polish Radio. Actually he introduced you to Poland. Keep going forward as you do. Greeting from Chicago.
Great!!!!
Damn creative!!
Self doesn't exist as we perceive it. Self is dependently originated! Everything is dependently originated and all composite things are impermanent. Only non-composite things are permanent!
Self/soul/consciousness cannot exist independently. Self is empty of objective existence! We must get conviction on this with study, reflection, and meditation thoroughly as much as we eat food three times a day! ✌🏻🤞🏻
Thank you Steven! Amazing album as always
Es increíble como haces un universo con una sola idea, y te das la humildad de hacer tan bella obra en una video estático. Carajo, eres un maestro y lo serás siempre Steven!
Wow... just Wow!
Bloody brilliant
Incredible video and song, thank you Steven!
Buenisimo! I appreciate your creative vision and your guts to handle all kinds of shade that emotions-perception shows in life! Thanks for doing something about it with your art since always! What a pleasure is to enjoy and be part of the magic that is stand for one

Lovely bit of Godley and Creme “Cry”
Gotta love all the millenials - 'this is soooo original!!!1'
@@wezhawes3359 More like Gen. Z, us millennials watched beavis and butthead react to it!
Actually the two techniques are pretty different. "Cry" used cross fades, an analog mixing of the two faces on film.
I would bet that "Self" is using DEEPFAKE technology. Kinda like motion cap, but the computer is taught how to create a celebrities face by studying thousands of pictures of them at different angles. The computer basically then makes a 3D model of the celebrities face, with multiple angles and expressions. Then the models face, in this case Wilson's, is mapped, his eyes, his mouth, the way it stretches, everything is mapped. Finally, you film the model, and then the computer can over lay the celebrities face, their eyes mouth, on top of the models, and use the model's performance to instruct the celebrity face what to do.
I might be wrong, but if it is a deepfake, its actually super complicated and sophisticated visual effect. Pretty original. The attention to detail and the fact that I bet Trump didn't show up on Steven Wilson's music video shoot proves that this is more than what "Cry" did. Not to mention using David Bowies face, a man who is sadly dead.
SW could have used anyones face, where as Godley and Creme were limited to who they could physically shoot.
Major differences despite the similarities on the surface.
@@janineoreilly5011 tldr
@@janineoreilly5011 do you think the fact that Cry was made in 1985 may have more to do with the different techniques used?
Yeah!
GOLD
Wonderful new record. Man of the People
All Steven did was just stand infront of the camera yet he has done so much. What a legend.
I mean, he doesn’t blink at all.
Less is more...
I think he went through a VERY tedious rehearsal in order to perform the basis for the video. The man now knows very well how to sell himself.
So good!
Love u so much Steve 💘
If I have to pick one favorite from the album which I'll play the most, this would be it! It's got the best of old and new SW!!
Totally agree- said that to myself the first time I heard it- it's a brilliant, 80s inspired pop masterpiece.
I'm personally more fond of Steven's progger, rocker side than this more electronic phase, but it has indeed a heart and makes more sense when you see the videos to each song. Smart lyrics, excellent edition and solid conceptual work. I'm really looking forward to see the whole album released. It has to be acknowledged that Steven is constantly experimenting and exploring music and visuals, and even on his poppier side he does a quite artistic work 😀👍
BEAUTY! 🖤
BEAUTIFUL

Great song, and really trippy video. Cool to see (presumably) deepfake technology being used in a music video, never seen that before!
And here we see it not only as tool that has been used, but apparently also as subject itself somehow

What took you so long?

Very good...!!!
I miss the times when Steven Wilson refused to release stuff on spotify. I really value him as an artist, but I once felt like he saw his determination in fighting for the future of how we'll consume music. These bold and disruptive ideas have given way to a buckling of prevailing consumerism - a tacit acceptance of the hostile takeover in order to secure one's own continued existence. I'm having a hard time accepting that future generations won't have an attention span for something like a concept album which is partly triggered by the way they are forced to consume music. The whole industry is fucked up - which btw fits perfectly in your current concept - chapeau :)
TLDR; buy physical copies, attend concerts, cancel your spotify accounts. Let's make music great again! Hallelujah!
ALL OF THE ABOVE!
I don't take orders from you. Also, music is still great today, so there's no need to make it great again.
@@diogoepronto I would like to apologise if my comment sounded like an order. That was not my intention. I was talking about a purely subjective observation. I have been observing the music market and people's consumer behaviour for several decades now and have derived a perhaps inconclusive prognosis from it. I don't think I have to explain to anyone how far the profits from former album sales differ from the current income from streaming platforms. Then there is the general way of consumption. An algorithm that analyses my listening behaviour and determines my future playlists accordingly, enriched with meta-data from other artists / labels, no longer has room for a coherent concept album.Musicians should therefore consider producing content that is automatically qualified as a single song as 'goutable'. I have decided for myself that this criterion destroys everything I love about music. It's OK if you see it differently. As I said, all this is just a purely subjective observation.
@@diogoepronto Ehhhh, mainstream commercial music used to be good, now almost all the good stuff is semi-underground or borderline obscure
I live in an area where some records are just really difficult to get, and even those I can get are a bit too expensive for my vast music taste, I chose a spotify subscription despite my hatred for them because otherwise I wasn't able to listen without shuffle play, which I consider cancerous for albums since it ruins them for me. But I don't really have a choice for when I'm outside my house and in a mood for an album.
This is my first time hearing Steven Wilson's music hahahaha I don´t know what can I say about this, I'm used to listen prog music, but this was absolutely different. It was a great experience, I'm following you now!

Didn't like the album initially as much as I was looking forward to it since the delay last year but this brilliant video alone makes me appreciate the album so much more. Will most likely grow on me in the very near future soon enough
I don't know how you feel about the record now, but as someone that's listened to it quite a few times, this is one of the few songs on this album I like.
@@ryancalhoun2910 hey Ryan. yeah its a good album for sure, no doubt about it. But I have some little nitpicky thoughts on some things that keep me from enjoying it fully... e.g. my fave moments from the album are Unself and Man of the People and both these songs abruptly stop just as they start developing a solid atmosphere upon which the song can really build up, in my opinion. Another thing to nitpick is Personal Shopper, I think it goes on too long. But overall I feel this is an exciting direction Steven has taken. I find a lot of similarities between Puscifers latest album and this one, not just in the musical direction but also lyrical themes. Too much to be a mere coincidence perhaps??? lol
@@goodsirbanzo3684 I don't really think it's that good, really. I think it starts off very strong, Unself/Self, King Ghost, 12 Things I Forgot, all good. Eminent Sleaze I can't stand but then Man of the People comes on and that track is good.
Personal Shopper is ok. Very cringeworthy lyrically imo. Follower is one where when I heard it I said, "You've got to be fucking kidding me," and Count of Unease isn't that good of a song either.
All in all, it's an average record for me. Nothing special, and without a doubt the worst album of his solo career in my opinion. It's not a bad record, it's just not really that good.
@@ryancalhoun2910 I have to disagree, the album grew on me overtime. I definitely prefer some of his other stuff for sure but I found this album wonderful. It's a good pop record where he brings his creativity from prog which makes it miles better than many pop albums I listened to in recent times. I'd urge you to give it a second chance, but either way I respect your opinion. I can see why someone won't enjoy it (my personal favorite album of his is Insurgentes).
