yes;)))
But doing music should not be about the artist......the fans are more imporant. What steve is doing is self-indulgent.
@@TheMaster4999 hmmmm that's not a problem. What is really self-indulgent is stating that what fans want is superior than what an artist want to his project.
If Steven is happy by doing whatever he wants, I'm happy. That guy puts love and effort in every step he does (musically speaking).

I only discovered Steve Wilson/ Porcupine Tree about a year ago! It’s the best music I’ve ever heard! It just takes me away.....Thanks Steve and the great musicians that make this music.
They are back touring next year! :)
I remem ber reading years ago how Steven Wilson refused to be boxed into the confines of being a "prog "musician and writer . Over the years I have begun to understand what he meant. It takes balls to go in new directions when you know there are going to be many who switch off and ask for a return to the öld stuff". Millions of kudos to you Steven for looking for and going in new musical directions . Perhaps we can all learn to take off the blinkers when it comes to new directions in music and go on this new journey with you. If anyone is going to take us on this new journey , I am grateful that we have you to lead the way!
What we call "prog" now has become a clearly defined genre with expectations from listeners. It's funny - as far as pure artistic expression and experimentation go, prog genre is now quite confined.
That is why Steven Wilson is one of my three favorite songwriters (the others being Ian Anderson and Chris Corner). Yeah, I like prog, but I also like lots of other genres, and SW does well writing in them. I'm trying to avoid listening to these new songs repeatedly until the entire record comes out, especially since I'm getting that newly-expanded limited edition. I can already tell I'm gonna like this one alot!
Not to mention that actually this is him going back to the old stuff, it just seems that the bunch of ppl that jumped on stevie bandwagon with the raven never bothered to listen to early porcupine tree or no man
@@platypus.divergent Certainly. Most of the"prog"that I initially loved was very much guitar based with keyboards being secondary but , as we all know, that is not the rule at all. I subsequently learnt to appreciate and enjoy the more electronic and keyboard oriented prog. It is almost the same journey we are on with Mr Wilson!
@@platypus.divergent I think Steven even said something like "There is no audience as conservative as the prog audience".
New Steven Wilson is always a good thing.

If you love PT, here's a cover of the king ghost song in PT style with guitar solos
It is a beautiful message hidden inside this song. It is for people with mental illness. It is really beautiful. Thanks Steve!!
Steven Wilson is exactly doing what progressive music should be about: progression and change. Love this song.
Progression and change for the sake of it is redundant though. There is no point progressing and changing into something you aren't good at and while I don't hate these new songs.... I don't really think they are any good either. If he's happy then fair enough. I have his older stuff to listen to. So long as he likes what he is doing and others enjoy it, it's all good.
@@wickywoowoo Complexity for the sake of it is the same, I am guessing it's one of the reasons Steven WIlson "downgraded" his music. Whether it's truly downgraded though is still a question, because it's done on purpose, it's noticeable how he is "holding back" and it adds its own effect.
Progressive music as a genre is about progression within a track - which can embrace complexity and simplicity, hard and soft, fast and slow, changes in rhythm, key, etc. (It can incorporate other genres but still within that frame.) Progressive music is not about switching genres. If that was the case, it would be progressive music if SW put out a marching band song. Clearly not the case.
To avoid conflating different concepts, I think it's better to hold on to two different concepts: 1) progressive music, as described above; 2) a progressive *artist* who doesn't like to stick to one genre or musical style.
Steven Wilson would! therefore, be a progressive artist who, mostly creates progressive rock/pop (Porcupine Tree and most of his solo work) but has also occasionally released more standard-sounding rock/pop/electronica (To The Bone and The Future Bites).
Prince and Madonna could be viewed as progressive artists but not creators of progressive music.
I'm not afraid to connect with him whatever the genre is

i did, that's why this clip/music hits so hard.
I am going to be super honest here. This song is creating small holes into my heart. I am feeling this weird emptiness since I listened to this song. It feels like I am the King Ghost now. This year has been a sad one, a terribly depressive one. I still haven't figured out whether it is a happy song or a sad one but I am tripping with sorrow after hearing it. It always demands a lot of listening to understand Wilson's music. It takes time for those songs to grow inside. Once it hits the spot, it dominates the soul. The music forever stays inside the brain cells. Steven Wilson, Sir, you are a real Genius.
I share the same feeling.
This is the most relatable comment so far!
You should listen to Pale Traces from The Gathering. It literally bursts me into tears. Blank Tapes from TTB, same thing!
& you r right in the assessment! I'm with you on that! If I could be as talented as he! My Music was heading in that direction in the 70s but I thought it sounded like disassemble lost to ELP OR YES I WISH I STAYED WITH IT! I cannot explain what it is that 75% of the songs make me tear up. They are touching me just by their melodies even without any of the lyrics they feel incredible deep.
He just creates the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard throughout my life.
I would love to hear "And the swallows dance above the sun"
When Steven Wilson said he makes "Pop" music, THIS IS the kind of "Pop" that he refers to. Not your typical generic "Pop" music. Most Prog Rock/Metal fans don't understand it (why?)... His conception of "Pop" as compositional structure and harmonic development is not what most people think of...
i mean he's also made permanating... which is quite cookie cutter pop, lol
Easily one of my favorite things he has ever done. And Jess Cope’s work keeps getting better and better. This is on a whole different level.
There's a touch of Peter Gabriel 3&4 feel to this. In a good way.

Thom Yorke would be a hope for the new album. The Steven Wilson album will of course be much more commercial.
And the chopped up robotic vocal samples that start around 1:07 have a Boards of Canada vibe. I love how SW incorporates so many influences into the music he creates. It makes for such a rich and robust catalog, and of course he has excellent taste in music.

I reckon Steven got his musical branding from listening to lots of ABBA as a kid. That was one band whose sound was so distinctive, you always knew whose song it was, even if you hadn't heard the song before.
@@andyd.5195 Well, in comparison to the Porcupine Tree albums and all the Steven Wilson albums this has always been more poppy and easier. Whether it will be more commercial in the sense of "will sell more than To The Bone and H.C.E." remains to be seen. For the first time since I've known Steven Wilson, I'm unsure if I'm buying. Sorry, it's like this. I bought the Deluxe Edition from the albums before that.
This song makes me feel things I haven't in a while. I admire SW's commitment to progression and change.
Steven's music never fails to take me to another place - What a perfect video/piece of art to match this track. Just amazing.
Every time Steven Wilson takes us to this magic place... masterpiece 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Jess Cope has created another amazing video! What an amazing lady she is!
Remember when I watched one of his shows some years ago he was talking about the difference between an entertainer and an artist. The first one is creates art in order to please his fans, while the second one is doing it as a way to express and please himself. You need guts to change your music style completely without caring about its reception from your fans. Greetings to one of the greatest artists of our time!
Not going to lie, I'm really digging this album. I disliked a lot of tracks on this one for sounding pop and electronic but they've grown on me. I still can't get into To the bone, and I guess I never will. This is a good album overall, not as great as Grace for drowning - Raven, but it still holds up.
I love it when Steven puts out new video's and new music. Steven's music has no genre and his music isn't like any other around. Thank you for all the great talent you have. I am a huge fan.

If you love PT, here's a cover of the king ghost song in PT style with guitar solos
It still really baffles me, that so many of his fans have listened to his releases from The Future Bites so far and come away with the conclusion that it's a completely new direction for Steven out of the blue. Like, no, it's totally not. To the Bone wasn't really all that far off the same path, and he was experimenting with electronic and pop songwriting in Porcupine Tree waaaay before their sound started taking on a distinctly prog metal vibe. Beneath the guitar work, a lot of early PT was heavily grounded in electronic music. Just because the guitars are less prominent now, doesn't mean it's inconsistent with the sorts of music he's been creating all along. And thematically, The Future Bites is the same thing he's been saying about consumer culture since "Piano Lessons". When I listen to his newer material, I get impressions from so many different directions-- ABBA, ELO, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Thom Yorke-- and I can't help but be impressed by how he's integrated those influences into his own voice.
Beautiful work here. I like "Personal Shopper", too, but this one has a really pretty ethereal quality to it that I absolutely adore.
As a fan since early PT (Voyage 34 era), I'll say this is really a new direction from the aspect that this style is in the focus of the music at the sacrifice of other musical influences that were previously mixed rather liberally with PT and Wilson's previous work, those influences being early prog, rock, barbershop quartet, jazz, etc. Not to say he hasn't touched on portions of this genre before, because he certainly has, but never to this depth and absolutely not to this level of exclusivity. What I'm hearing now is straight, cold electronic and it hasn't grown on me yet. It seems he's trying to appeal to a younger audience, which is fine. That's perfectly well within his choice career-wise. While I'm sure there will be some dissent to my comment here, I don't feel like a majority of older PT and some early Steven solo fans will find this appealing outside of the dedicated masses. It's just a bit too far off what he's done. But, he will find new fans as well.

If you love PT, here's a cover of the king ghost song in PT style with guitar solos
Well, he has totally reworked his approach to writing, in that he no longer writes on guitar, but now electronically. It is certainly a new direction, from that perspective. And, there are no drums or guitar on this track at all, which is new. Although there may be stylistics pointers from earlier albums, I think in many ways this does qualify as a new direction.
Plus, it seems as if a lot of fans who have been on board since early PT are now jumping ship, so there must be something new about it.
