"We're lost in the mall, shuffling through the stores like zombies. What is the point? What can money buy?" ("Anesthetize" - Porcupine Tree) ☝😏
Yes
Mr. Wilson deep into the consumerism ideas
I was getting some anesthetize vibes from this as well
+1
My first thought
Damn, he's done it again. Discovering this man's music was one of the best things that ever happened to me
Yeah, and now i'm going to listen also I.E.M., No-Man,Storm Corrosion and all music project wich Wilson worked on. This man Is a music God for me.

YES
What a paradox - so many fans of progressive rock seem to not know the concept of progression and won’t accept that the artist evolves 😃 Love this track💙
You got the most precise point: How not to embrace progression in SW music !
Your comment is everything. 😂
How is a love-letter to consumerism (SW's words) considered progression in any sense?
@@georgioslymperis6117 the op is referencing a musical progression, not a societal progression. SW is leading in the direction of musical progression in every sense, whilst incorporating lyrical context of the present. If progressive music were intended to be progressive only in a psychological capacity, then inventive works like King Crimsons "Court of the crimson King" and The Mars Volta's "Bedlam in Goliath" couldn't be considered progressive due to their exploration into dated concepts and use of near mideaval melodies Incorporated. Truly progressive music is not only invention, but reimaging or rebranding of otherwise "normal" musical qualities into something unheard of. Send me music that sounds exactly like this song, if you feel this, truly, isn't progressive.
@@georgioslymperis6117 ever heard of satire?
It STILL grows on me. One of the very best songs Steven Wilson ever made and maybe not only my "Song of 2020", but of 2021, too.
Absolutely marvellous!
I really love how this manages to sound cheerful and creepy at the same time...
Gerard Slooven kinda like Pariah. I learned that song to play duo with a friend, and I assumed that it would be all minor chords, because the melody sounds so morose. Lots of major chords there, surprisingly. SW is a master of mood
That's Steven Wilson's niche.
Yes, his music cheers you up until you are only severely depressed from it
Wow! Steven gets on The Autobahn, meets the Pet Shop Boyz and Yazz, and bumps into a Porcupine at the service station. What am I on! What is he on! Love it....replay...
Nice mashup!
Very well put! Love it!
A very accurate and spot on description about this new Steven Wilson song. I love it 👏
I really can't understand all the controversy around this song. Personally, I think it's absolutely brilliant. In fact, I'm totally addicted to it. I admire the fact that Steven continues to bring us genre-defying masterpieces and really respect that he does what HE wants and not necessarily what many of his fans want. As an EDM producer, that's exactly what I do, I make the music I want to hear and if people like it, that's cool, and if they don't, that's also cool. A lot of "fans" seem to think that if it's not progressive it must be pop. Sorry to burst your bubble y'all but this song is extremely progressive and it's definitely NOT pop. 80's synthwave? Yes. Pop? Not so much. IMHO, everything Steven touches turns to gold. He makes the music I want to hear, every single album without exception!
WELL SAID. HERE HERE!!!!!
Agree with you in that 80's synth touch. I like it pretty much.
Stephen Wilson plays from his musical soul to your musical soul, not to your ears.......
I'm familiar with that kind of sound too!
@@marc7574 Uptempo sing along hits are the hardest to write ... This song is just brilliant.
Steven Wilson makes the music I never knew I lacked.
Yes!!
Steven is definitely following in the path of the greats like Prince and Bowie, never predictable and always pushing his boundaries. I know many longtime PT fans will roll their eyes at this one, but I love the early 80s synthpop vibes. Hope we get a US tour.
It actually sounds more like first few PT albums than any of SW-solo stuff
Yeah. And this reminds me of Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic & Never Let Me Down, respectively.
Been a PTree fan for a longtime now and I have always loved the way he keeps experimenting and pushing boundaries (as you rightly said). I TOTALLY LOVE THIS.
One of the best summary's on SW and his work.
Initial pt albums were highly influenced by retro synthpop. This is nothing new, more like going back to the roots where it all began
People says this is different from his style, but to me this song reminds me of the album Up The Downstair from Porcupine Tree... that psychedelic atmosphere from songs like Synesthesia or the title song. Not bad, not bad at all.
It certainly is.. I loved early PT stuff. I met SW around 1995 in Liverpool on an early PT tour
The drums do remind me of synethesia
My thought exactly!
Allan Pv Synesthesia is such an awesome and underrated song
Mellora Exactly. He constantly explores different styles and makes the music he wants to make. Whether me or you like what’s he doing compared to past work is besides the point for him.
If y'all like this record, get into Everything Everything! The guy who produced their first two records helped Steven produce this, and EE's drummer is all over it!
Everything Everything rips, Richard Henshall of Haken cites them as an influence, thats how i found out about them.
"I think the responsibility of every true artist is ultimately to be selfish, to make something that they themselves believe 100 percent in and to never think about what other people want from them. No one is going to tell me that Picasso painted paintings to please other people, I don’t believe it! I think great artists make things in a very selfish way, and lesser artists think about their fans and try and provide something to please them. For me, those people are not really artists, they’re entertainers." - Steven Wilson, 2016
Listen #3 and this song is gold.
Woow, wise words ! 😀
Damn, that's how I always felt about artists I admire but never found the words to describe it. Did he say or write that in some interview?
@@Daniel_Rodrigues_89 Here's the interview: rollingstoneindia.com/steven-wilson-rolling-stone-india-interview/
Exactly. And not only that....if artists cater to the audience then they lose the ability to bring something NEW and original out. Because you can only know what the many like by looking at the past.
.
Steven Wilson without fear of being pop is amazing.
Starting Way back in "Stupid Dream", I really love his pop tunes
SW likes pop, so why would he be afraid of being it? He would enjoy a little more recognition.
@@Icasus On several occasions he has said that he has discarded songs for being "too poppy" (as in the case of Happiness III that dates back to the time of Deadwing). Even in the TTB Deluxe Edition he mentions that Permanating was scrapped for a time and he was scared to release it. Personally I feel that To The Bone is impregnated by that fear, however, listening to this single I feel that that fear disappeared.
@@DinoJunguillo I agree completely. He has embraced the final genre and transformed into super Wilson! That's why his hair is different :)
This song is not pop. How is it pop?
The amount of times wilson has taken a genre i thought i didn't like and made me like it...
That's probably because nobody had done that genre well enough before!!!
Exactly!!! He is a master in everything he picks up.
This has a heavy Nine Inch Nails (meets Depeche Mode?) vibe. Works for me!

Well put. Feel the same way
You know Nick Beggs is having his way with his bass on this song
I'm not sure if I can hear it over the pulsing sequences.
Sure, what bassist doesn't love playing techno music over bass sequences.
@@GuitarWholesale I'll tell you which type of bassist doesn't to love that. A close-minded one. Which Mr. Beggs is not.
Xam271
Let me guess, everything that Steven Wilson does is "holier than thou", am I right?
I doubt you are a techno or electronic fan, but a Steven Wilson fan, that's why everything he does is "pure genius", no matter what, right?
@@GuitarWholesale Nah, gotta disappoint you there. Like that of any truly great artist, Wilson's catalogue is comprised of hits and misses. That being said, Nick Beggs has been working with Wilson since 2011. He's a great and open minded bass player. The fact that you can't imagine a bass player being versatile and professional enough to play additional bass over an electronic bassline just showcases your own ineptitude to understand musicianship.
Come on people in 2020 you guys really got spoiled! There is nobody been like Steven Wilson for 35 years! Come on let him spread his wings! He's not Icarus! He knows what he's doing! Signify!

@@vejymonsta3006 No, Elton John is busy with Ozzy.... Unbelievable what those Real artists are doing for German "Frühstücksfernsehen"... simply permanating and pandering
Super catchy, another great song in the Steven Wilson catalogue. I don't get people who hate on Steven's poppier side, he's always had pop influences in his music. For those that hate on this because its not "progressive" I would argue that it's more progressive in a musical sense than most things in the prog rock/metal sphere nowadays. I find it ironic that those who claim to be more musically developed by listening to prog are so narrow minded when they are challenged to listen to anything else.
Keep rocking people.. or dancing
.. or whatever you feel like free expression is the whole point of music.
You nailed it. I absolutely agree. 👌🏼
Could not agree more
This has nothing to do with "challenge" to listen to different music. When it's not my taste, I avoid it. Simple as that. And sorry, but SW's recent direction is really turning me off. We have enough pop "music". So we don't need potentially great musicians to add to that pointless ocean of letting computers create sounds. HCE was a masterpiece. I think, it could just go downhill from there.
@@7thString84 Well you are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. I don't see it as letting computers make sounds personally. It takes a personality behind that software and machinery to allow it to come to life. While yes there are fewer acoustic instruments on this track as compared to most of his previous works the man has always had a heavy love for electronica. Who knows maybe this album will have a number of great instrumental tracks. For me personally, the difference is giving these artificial sounds a character of their own which I think Steven has done on this song. It's what people have like Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, and countless others have done in the past.
Who knows maybe you'll grow to love this album, my guess is Steven is just growing tired of using guitar tones heavily on every album, I mean the guy has been doing it for like 25-30 years now, and wishes to test his skills in another area that he loves.
@@smccann1998 You definitely understand Steven Wilson and art itself. What's the problem with pop? There's bad pop, good pop and Steven Wilson. People should enjoy music for what it is not having stereotypes. Music is like life and life evolves. So what's the problem with this stuck people. There are plenty of bands out there with the same formula over and over. So go listen to them if you're narrow minded. I understand it's a matter of tastes and Mr. Wilson has a widely taste in everything and it influences HIS music. Yeah, because he's doing what he likes and enjoys not what people want to and he has said that in many interviews. I guess this people just stay in the shallow part of music. Because Wilson has always been this way through all his projects. How can't people notice it?
This song arrives just in time. The virus stopped the earth and in the silence, we can hear clearer. We buy and long to have so much stuff that is totally unnecessary. We pay attention to so many things that aren't worth it. We argue about topics that in the end, doesn't make a real difference in our lives. Idk it just made me think

Imagine when he play this song live... he will blow our brains out. I like it, and i'm not surprised; Steven is not just a musician, he is a composer (and a very good one) who likes to experiment.
These dance/electronica elements have always been present in Steven music... the early Porcupine Tree albums had LOTS of these kind of beats - how they sounded in the early nineties of course - so I can't understand why people is surprised. Maybe cause they think that In Absentia is the first PT album...

musically this kinda reminds me of (in certain parts) the album "vienna" by ULTRAVOX or their founding member John Foxx's early solo material. I love how each SW album or project is always something different from the others, he's England's version of Todd Rundgren, always re-creating himself. that to me is the true meaning of artistic integrity. love this song soo, soo much, the full album is going to be incredible. that guitar madness towards the end is just what the song needed to finish off another awesome SW masterpiece................

@@Spright91 Nothing is marxist about the lyrics man, it's just talking about consumerism.
This guy never disappoints! A true musical genius, seen him many times live and always gives a perfect show! I do miss porcupine tree but as long as sw keeps making art/music I'm happy!
Excellent 21 century's piece of music..true artists create music first of all in order to satisfy their own need, not to satisfy their audience..Mr Wilson is one of them..
My favourite part of the trailer turned out to be the chorus.
I'M IN HEAVEN
Holy shit - what a track! Discovered this JUST in time for Christmas consumer season. I simply love this guy! Fantastic refrain on this song. Now to find the 180g vinyl of it...
Ironically, this is probably the most Porcupine Tree thing he's done since going solo. But because it's not "stereotypically prog" people think it's shit. Their loss.
what
@@behindthen0thing Have you heard anything from On the Sunday to Life to the Sky Moves Sideways? There are literally chord progressions in this song that he's recycled from that era.
You’re absolutely right - artists like Steve needs to be innovative - people should appreciate this. He doesn’t walk already paved paths!
@@edwardspencer-small7021 yes I've heard every single porcupine tree song to hear many many times
@@behindthen0thing Then I have no idea how you're not hearing this connection. It struck me instantly. Appears I'm not the only one who thinks this as well, judging by some of the other comments on here.

"PRE-ORDER STEVEN WILSON x THE FUTURE BITES" - this in-you-face irony cannot possibly be lost on SW.
Yes, I'll take the 180 gram vinyl please!
You're right and i'm sure, he is aware of it. But i will (unironically) pre-order it anyway probably.
Not sure where the border between self-irony and hypocrisy lies 🤨
It’s not ironic. The song is about buying things you don’t need. I need this. 😎

This crosses so many genres and is so well-executed, I don't even know where to begin. It's just a slice of awesome.

The music makes you feel a certain way. That is why I love this man. This makes me feel stressed out. But its upbeat and fast. It's like fake happy. But at the same time it's dark. Like you cant stop the beat/shopping. Compulsive. Like something is wrong. Love music that makes me THINK. He has done it once again folks!!

From progressive metal and rock, through alt. rock and pop to synth-pop. The madman will go through all of them sooner or later.
I'm interested in his take on rap. I might start enjoy it once he makes a song in that genre.

Just a gorgeous surprise 🤩
Last year when Steven said he was working on an album that would reflect the world of 2019 I was wondering what that was going to sound like. Well, now we've gotten our first taste and I'm ready for more. You definitely can't judge this song if you just hear the first 30-seconds (of course that's often been the case with Steven's body of work) and it really takes off in the later half of the song. A biting critique of our consumer culture.
"consumer culture"
Beginning to seem a huge anachronism
Consumer culture as he then sells deluxe editions, fans are so gullible. Nothing new in the music either, it's all been done before. Listen to Eivind Aarset amd Jan Bang, now that's progressive, not this shit.
Nearly everything he does is genius, and with each new album he seems to further meld every possible genre into progressive tastiness

Steven does it again, I'm a huge fan of his and it's obvious he's in to a lot of bands I enjoy too, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and Massive Attack all with that prog rock underbelly
I actually quit social media last September, it does help your mental health out

No one ever mentions Radiohead.
Listen to Fitter Happier.
We're you tired of Facebook?
I did the same back in October. I'm so much happier and better off now.
Really thought I would miss it, but I don't.
Now that is good!
To anyone thinking of locating the artist known as Steven Wilson in order to tell him that they don't like this: please note that in coming from overseas, you'll probably just get quarantined due to Covid-19 and never see him.
On that score, I should also let you know that over here we have no stocks of either paracetamol, hand sanitiser, toilet tissue or pasta. So, should you choose to make the trip and by some miracle get into public circulation, you''l be able to witness shoppers criticising panic buyers while in the process of doing their own panic buying.
A song that mentions people buying everything they can lay their hands on? Perfect timing.
This thing is still a banger (in Germany we call it "Brett"), one of the very few disco-songs I really dig and overall (for me) an alltime-favourite in Wilson's 'Oeuvre'.
Edit:
And we still didn't experience it LIVE!!
this is the new twist for the Lennon of our generation. disco, industrial, darkwave, prog rock, and a little of vaporwave in between. finally experiencing without any type of prejudice. really cool. Excellent Mr. WIlson. Regards from Chile.
Oh my. I really didn't expect a sound like this - but as always, you're proving that you can do pretty much any type of music and it will work.
Great job, Mr. Wilson.
Postcard saved my life...This will re-ignite it.
Never knew who Steven Wilson was last Friday. Saw him promoting this album on Twitter, thought I'd give it a whirl on Amazon Music........HOOKED! It definitely gets better with each listen. I can't make my mind up what track is best.
The weirdest thing to me is that he comes from my home town, Hemel Hempstead!!!!!
Imagine falling down a rabbit hole of 30 years filled with mind-blowing music then. Because that's probably what you will do. I celebrate my personal 20th anniversary with this guys music and I have like 35 records or so, in several different projects, starting about 1990.
And I LOVE "The Future Bites"!
@aname aname OK, Boomer.
@aname aname Not my problem. I come to a totally different conclusion.
Love how all the comments on here are all over the place. Mission accomplished I think SW. Keep at it..
I HATED it at first. Now it's in constant rotation. Its totally weird and condescending. Love all the left turns and references to early psych PT. It's like all his projects got together and had a baby. His IEM stuff, Up the Downstair and Storm Corrosion are my favorites. This has it all.
All the comments have one thing in common. They are male.
I love the feel of this song. It vaguely reminds me of David Bowie's "Blackstar" but 80's. I can dig it. Mr Wilson, you've done it again!
I was also getting huge Blackstar vibes from this track
Better not. I don't want Steven to die two days after the release...
Now that you mention it, this really does have a David Bowie vibe to it.
Like if Bowie were still alive and began singing instead of Steven, you wouldn't be surprised in the least.
Oh God this is happening
I think people are just hating it because it sounds "pop". Just because it sounds pop doesn't mean you MUST hate it. If it's sounds good it sounds good. And to me this sounds fire. And that's all that matters. Listen to the music not the genre.
There was always some "pop" in Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson. Just because it's the only primitive category of criticism you can think about doesn't mean it has anything to do with it. It shows rather in how few ways you can actually think about music, which is condemning in wanting to praise this at all costs. It is just damn lame and uninteresting. One can't construe another way to make it good.
The best defense would actually probably be: It's Steven Wilson doing another routine song about some familiar topic...
If you live long enough weird things like Elton John appearing on a Steven Wilson song happens.
Not as weird as Ihsahn from Emperor covering A-Ha, but, yeah, it def raised my eyebrow... in a positive manner!
dunno.. Steve is a Elton fan, Elton always loves new and exciting music.. he did a song with Ozzy Osbourne not long ago. which is pretty weird.

Eh, he covered Taylor Swift. It was a good cover, but this is more normal
I love how he does his thing without trying to please music elitists.
Yet musical elitists are the ones who will pretend to like this because it makes them seem edgy or different. SW could fart for 55 minutes and people would give it a 10/10.
I do too. There are some artists I really enjoy, but there comes a point in their career when I know I don't need to hear the new album, because I know exactly what I'll be getting. Not that I stop liking the music, but there's no magic in always getting more of the same. I love Steven Wilson, because I'm never quite sure what's coming. It's not always my thing and I know I won't like every song, but there's always something special about putting a new SW album on for the first time and being taken on a new journey. My favourite style has to be The Raven That Refused To Sing, and part of me always hopes for more of that and is disappointed when it doesn't come, but there are always fantastic songs that make the other part glad that he's always changing direction.
I'm on the fence about this song still, but it won't stop me from getting the album.
@@charlesmiller3278 Wrong.
same. so many bands from my youth. I just don't care about their new records.. but ill go see them live. I recall not liking Steven Wilsons 1st solo record.. so I left it alone. Love Porcupine Tree tho. But then I heard a tune off To the Bone, and I liked it. so I back tracked.. I was mad at myself for being late to the Hand Cannot Erase party. a masterpiece to me. this new tune isn't what im usually into.. but its memorable since I grew up on pop in the 80s I can dig it.
@@charlesmiller3278 I laugh so hard at this!
Even more relevant in 2023
Out of all the "prog artists" Steven Wilson is the only TRUE prog. Because the man's music is actually progressing with time.
You have to listen Leprous in order to notice their evolution through every album they've made
So did Jethro Tull. No two albums of theirs were the same. They showed tons of musical creativity and diversity as well as a constant state of evolution between albums. Believe it or not The Beatles and ABBA also progressed with time.
Steve, you are a bloody musical genius !!!!!
Excessive and needless consumerism is indirectly the source of all problems including climate change and pandemics.
How is it the cause of pandemics?
@@Pat315 I will try to explain. More consumerism means more demand and need for more industries. To set up many more industries, we need more land. For more land, we are clearing more forests and natural habitats which are forcing many animals and birds to come closer to us. Closer they come, more chances of human-animal contact and chances of spillover of zoonotic viruses (like new Corona) from animals to humans/ domestic animals.
@@bcs455 On top of that, Covid-19 shows how our livelihood now depends on consumerism. A few weeks of people not buying things and the entire economy crashes and the government is scrambling to keep people and businesses afloat.
@Jimb0 Can't disagree with that. The idea I like is the democratization of workplaces. Where the workers collectively share ownership of the business they work at. That way the interests of the business align with the workers.
So when we bail out businesses in times of crisis, we know it directly benefits the people working there instead of it being a handout to the wealthy owners and CEOs. I might be getting a bit political for a music video, but that's my hot take.
I don't know why, but Sir Elton John reading a shopping list kind of reminds me of the Master of Ceremony in Tubular Bells (No, I am not trying to force a 70s prog influence onto this forward-looking gem.)
The subtle art of pop medicine. Thank U Steven for being free and full of soul.
Probably the best track of brand new album.

I’m little bit confused, amazed, offended, happy, sad at the same time. This is something what music as an art should do. I don’t have an opinion on this song. I am just going to accept it as it is and let the time do the job.
