Very thoughtful and intelligent comments here by Steven. The elephant in the room, though, is the entrance on the stage of illegal downloads and then streaming services such as Spotify. Album sales have plummeted since he started out in the early 90s. As always, a development like that cuts off the bottom half of the economic pyramid, which means record producers are less inclined to take a chance on a new and untried artistic development by upcoming musicians. The ROI just may not be there and so the investment becomes too risky. This is the most important reason why it's harder to become the next Bowie or Prince, and why the audience is sadly left with music "made by millionaires who are nearly twice your age" and engineered for "building cheaper thrills," as Steven himself has so aptly put it.
Agreed! The music is done and sitting on shelves. These music millionaires are picking the next pop star and giving them the song to sing. Chris never even walked a red carpet with his ex wife, he lives a very low profile life outside of concerts. Only one member has an indivdual social media page and that’s Guy berryman not Chris. For you to suggest he wants to be the center of the universe is ridiculous.
Well said! Even while he's dating Dakota he isn't vying for everyone's attention about it. When he's doing Coldplay he is really marketing it as the face of the band for obvious reasons, but outside of that he isn't a pompous celebrity walking red carpets. He often takes a backseat during their hiatus from touring. We hardly ever hear about him during that time. He also isn't dressing extravagantly or creating headlines like stars of the past. Coldplay have adapted will and they write for both old and new fans contrary to what these experts think.
Completely agree, Chris would get cross in early interviews and tell people that she was just a person like anybody else. He meets creative people, that’s why he dates them. I heard a lot of jealousy in this interview, if she doesn’t know Chris personally perhaps don’t surmise on why he does things.

Such a low blow!! He opened up honestly to you and in return you pick this shitty title for your video? I listened to the entire interview yesterday, you put Steven in a bad spot by picking that bit from the 2 hr long video, and making a video out of it to get more eyeballs. I guess your questions also pushed him in direction to name a few bands as examples. S.W was balanced in his answers, he didn't "expose" or talk down on any artist.
Thank you for the feedback and watching the interview. I don't think the content itself makes Steven look anything other than what he is. But I hear you re the title. How would you have done it differently?
Steve Wilson is kinda like England’s Steve Albini. Super smart and articulate. But always kind of makes an off-handed comment about an artists credibility. Then immediately after says “don’t get me wrong I respect them”.
All you have to do is stand on any random street corner during a busy time of day to hear just how far we've fallen in terms of musical taste. It's a travesty.
Always thought Lana Del Rey changed the pop landscape including in aesthetic as he was talking about. But the whole thing is that it kind of just happened without anybody really realizing it - it wasn't celebrating itself like similar events in the past.
Steve Wilson hands downs has become one of today's music big gurus , Agreed 100% on all of the comments made. The one artis mentioned here I believe is way overrated is ELTON JOHN, he had his peak in the 70's and never really recorded anything of quality to match his early work. One more thing about ELTON JOHN, let's not forget that unlike the others mentioned who wrote most of their materials Elton 100% depended on BERNIE TAUPIN, again, overrated.
@@RobMooreDisruptors When you have almost 2 hours of conversation and the first thing you need to do is create a short clip attempting to gain attention by using an opinion not really that controversial but trying to look like it is, that is not good. There are a lot of possibilites for a much better title.

I just did Body Balance with several Chinese pianists after watching that. Can you imagine the power of 1.3 billion Coldplay fans trolling about in a shopping mall with SiFu mong_mong. Me neither.
I deeply admire Steven Wilson as an artist and producer. But, LOL - using David Bowie and Madonna in the same grouping as being good at collabs is definitely an oxymoron. I can't think of a single thing Madonna has ever done that has been interesting. Apparently others can.
Listen to something truly awesome, like King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Porcupine Tree indeed, Pixies, prime Sonic Youth, Tool, you name it. Then put the first Coldplay album and feel all the power drain out of your arse. It's totally enervating.
2:51 disappointing... People who criticize others.... especially those they've never met... I'll be one now... How do you know what Chris Martin loves? Even if you're correct, what is so wrong about feeling a certain way? What do you care? I remember someone telling me something like that while I stood next to them feeling insignificant and thinking I didn't even deserve to talk to them. How can you talk about somebody so carelessly while being a center of the progstream at some point in time? The choice of his wife? Pffffff. Just incredibly shallow.
I have never been a Coldplay fan, and have enjoyed far more releases from Porcupine Tree, in comparison. However, replace the name “Chris Martin” here with “Steve Wilson” and what he says would apply the same and still make sense (minus marrying a movie star, etc. which was a pretty dumb point, anyway). Wilson may be less known, but his music has shown no less abundence of ego at times and certainly contrivance, to the point where it made this Porcupine Tree fan into a loyal fan of albums he re-masters or produces but someone who either avoids or yawns majorly at his often cringe-worthy solo releases. This could just as easily be Steven in a therapy session, talking about his own insecurities. Pot, kettle, and so forth.
An abundance of ego is a different thing to wanting to be at the centre of things, which is what he said about Chris Martin. It's a given that all great artists have a strong ego - you'd never do anything great otherwise. And to quote the memorable Skyhooks lyric, "ego is not a dirty word"!
As a truther and a massive Coldplay fan i cant help but feel a tinge of sadness with their symboloism on their most recent album. But i guess they have to tow the line..if they refused to include the symbology then their career in the music industry would be all but ended.

Agree with everything Steven says regarding Chris Martin and "The centre of the Universe". Don't agree with him as regards Coldplay being a cool band, or that they ever wrote any great songs. Just can't listen to them, as the music makes me cringe. Don't know if Steven was aware of David Bowie being approached by Chris Martin a lot of years back, asking Bowie if maybe they could do something musically together? Bowie,s reply was very telling.... "Well, you,re last album wasn't very good." This was a Chris Martin interview l seen years ago, and this story was related by Chris Martin himself. Martin,s reply was also telling.... "With Bowie having told me that, l realised, well, that's the level you have to get to, in order to do an album or single with David Bowie." For me, having watched this, it wasn't just a case of Chris Martin having to up his game in order to reach Bowie,s level. It was more a case of... Sorry Chris, you never will. And this is what Chris Martin didn't understand. David Bowie didn't want to touch or be associated with Coldplay, in the same way as he had with Queen.
Coldplay have a very unique sound which is why I like listening to them. Their wall of sound guitarwork gets me in every time. But I can't listen to them too many times in a row.
Bowie didn't say 'your last album isn't very good' all he said was the song offered to him is 'not one of your best work isn't it?' Stop twisting stories just because you don't like Coldplay's music. You can froth in the mouth all you want but Yellow,The Scientist and Clocks are all gaining modern classic status and Viva La Vida will be as well. Hating a band as a part of your personality is MAJOR CRINGE. I bet you don't have many friends because of this trait. Snobby music nerd like you is a turn off.

I found his somewhat respectful criticism of Coldplay's singer to be interesting and accurate. It was subtle but he definitely gave him a little jab there, but great interview.
Steven love your own music...but as far as your thoughts on other music and musicians throughout this particular YT semi-rant..what a rambling crock of shite. Your focus is as narrow as a top ten playlist...your trying to form some linear logic to the development and quality of musical history and accomplishments is futile, it is akin to conspiracy theories... there are so many more extremely strong influences on the developing world of "rock" music that to try and pin Chris Martin into an Ed Sheeran/ Thom Yorke conglomerate is unnecessarily beyond insulting. This rant is a clear example of why people need to vent then set the vent aside for a while and come back to it before sending it to the world. Thx! Rock on
I love Steven Wilson's music, in two days actually I will hear Porcupine Tree live in Chile, but I don't understand why people (Wilson including) says that your music is good if you are low profile, unknown person. You have to be a nun of music to be a good musician and made a definite type of music, if you are out of all that, you are cynic and you music is losing credit. No! Everyone is free to make the music that wants to do, and if your music is massive listened you become famous. This is like say that a football player have to play whit smart passes and intelligent play to be a good player, and if he becomes a dribbling player whit triks and golden globes, he is not too good like before.
You're not really getting the point... It's about sacrificing the integrity of your music/art to appeal to a certain/wider audience, and be very conscious and delibrate about trend and all that... i agree with Steven that i think Coldplay is a case where most of the music didn't come from the art/music anymore in the first place...
This is difficult because I think he's right to a large extent with regards to the multi-faceted nature of the role of a musician nowadays, but he's just a bit out of touch. Since grunge, you had nu metal, then indie, then emo, then hipster rock, which all got huge followings and controlled the zeitgeist to a large extent, including fashion and art. It's hard to say what the current 'thing' is, but unusual artists are still breaking into the limelight and shaping how music sounds in unexpected ways - Billie Eilish would be an important example. Everything from production to singing style was completely different to anything in the top 100, and yet it became an artist to follow and emulate in its idiosyncracy.
Music in the 70’s and 80’s was so much better than the drivel that Coldplay, Muse, Sheeran etc churn out. T Rex, Slade, The Police, The Beat, The Specials and the kings of them all, XTC are far superior bands compared to what’s out there now
That's just your opinion. Coldplay, Muse, Radiohead - they're incredible musicians who have written songs that have defined the millennium and a new generation of music listeners. You just cannot deny it. They have some of the most iconic and recognisable songs in modern music
@@planeguy95 I haven't really followed Radiohead throughout their career, but we can safely say that the artistic heydays of Muse and Coldplay are well behind us. Muse's first four albums are among the best I own, but each album after that got a little worse. Their latest is just terrible. They've followed the same path Wilson describes about Coldplay in this video. I can't blame them for staying relevant and raking in the cash, but that's the reality.

@@planeguy95 Yeah, I enjoy Radiohead! They just haven’t remained consistently on my radar over the years. The elephant in the room is illegal downloading and later streaming, of course.
When did he say otherwise? Also, people who like k-pop should be thrown from a very high plane without a parachute. Good job were not on twitter, you could spam me with a crowd cam

That BTS collaboration was the final coffin nail for me.

Thank you for changing the title, now it sounds better! And also thanks for a great interview with S.W!
Strange, how can you mention Coldplay and Muse but not U2?
The music I listen to is Steven Wilson music!!!!
Steve is so cool, he feels the music
Steve Wilson is kinda like England’s Steve Albini. Super smart and articulate. But always kind of makes an off-handed comment about an artists credibility. Then immediately after says “don’t get me wrong I respect them”.
I mean, he’s being honest. I also get the feeling from Coldplay that they make music to sell, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
He's just saying that every artist has a different focus. And what's implied is that every choice has consequences and trade-offs.
This is probably the funniest hot take ever, talk about speaking the bloomin obvious!
Coldplay: 🤡👉🎪
Porcupine Tree: 💪😎 (Gigachad)
Steve Wilson hands downs has become one of today's music big gurus , Agreed 100% on all of the comments made. The one artis mentioned here I believe is way overrated is ELTON JOHN, he had his peak in the 70's and never really recorded anything of quality to match his early work. One more thing about ELTON JOHN, let's not forget that unlike the others mentioned who wrote most of their materials Elton 100% depended on BERNIE TAUPIN, again, overrated.
horrible clickbait. [update: way much better title. Thank you for listening]
What title would you have used?
@@RobMooreDisruptors When you have almost 2 hours of conversation and the first thing you need to do is create a short clip attempting to gain attention by using an opinion not really that controversial but trying to look like it is, that is not good. There are a lot of possibilites for a much better title.
I do think in part music has also disappointed for a lot of people
Inwardly
Great in many ways but just not having that depth enough of the time for enough people I’d say
Coldplay first two albums were brilliant. After that they lost that charm.
yes, i agree with this, from a rock music perspective anyway
Listen to something truly awesome, like King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Porcupine Tree indeed, Pixies, prime Sonic Youth, Tool, you name it. Then put the first Coldplay album and feel all the power drain out of your arse. It's totally enervating.
I disagree
I thought the first 3 were great. After that there are a few pop hits that are decent to pretty good, but otherwise I'd agree with you.
Give Viva la Vida a chance, its fucling great. After that yeah you can forget it. VLV was the last GOOD album by them
Stupid clickbate title, not a fan.
how would you have titled it differently?
Hm how about Ghost? They are rock-based and quite successful internationally
Agreed, I was also thinking about the Foo Fighters.
I think Empire State Bastard has brought something new
2:51 disappointing...
Shitty title, tbh.
What would you use as a title?
No-one touches Bowie
Your t shirt sums it up in a nut shell mate 😎👍
Cold play is brilliant
Clickbait bruhhhhhhh.... come on... You can do better.
How would you have titled it differently?
Why not talk about coldplays Masonic symbolism?
As a truther and a massive Coldplay fan i cant help but feel a tinge of sadness with their symboloism on their most recent album. But i guess they have to tow the line..if they refused to include the symbology then their career in the music industry would be all but ended.
Could you give any examples?
@@ΠαύλοςΣιδηρόπουλος-γ8ψ alot of the album art looks just like a virus. Also the infinity symbol which is absolutely everywhere right now.
@@orlandotrustfullandhiscosm4110 I see. And also the idea of unity (New World Order maybe), prevalent among many of the more recently released songs.
@@ΠαύλοςΣιδηρόπουλος-γ8ψ idk about 'unity'..i mean we do NEED unity. Just not in the globalised way the ruling class intend 'unity' to be. I will give Chris Martin and co the benefit of the doubt because theyve always been such lovely human beings.
In terms of modern acts, I would say Bring me the Horizon.
Honestly I’ve always thought of porcupine tree as prog Coldplay
Maybe some of their material, but PT is so much more and explored more music styles. Don't get me wrong, I like Coldplay (mostly their older material though). Radiohead would be a better comparison IMO.

Source of that David Bowie situation?
@@saintjabroni Chris Martin! 😂

Inspired by Echo and the Bunnymen Coldplay started off cool but ended up making music for sheep 🐑
Thx! Rock on
Muse first album was a masterpiece but then they slowly got worse and Coldplay are quite awful they have a few good songs .
Showbiz wasn't better than Origin of Symmetry or Absolution.
@@miralex67 it was better it had that raw live sound origin of symmetry had cover songs and sounded a bit computerised bollox .
The bland talking about the bland.
Clearly never heard royal blood :)
Steve Wilson talks about contrived this is fucking laughable!
Why is this laughable and what do you mean?
@@markvandenberg4606 I do agree with you for the most part - and I do also unfortunately agree with you on the new Muse album. But their talents still can’t be denied, which is what my original comment was referring to.

The elephant in the room is illegal downloading and later streaming, of course. Bands like Muse are trying to keep the revenue stream flowing in an age of collapsed album sales.
