Memphis Mojo 6.5 Vs DD Audio 506 - Who wins and who goes up in smoke ?

  • This video puts these 2 subwoofers in a head to head test to see which one holds its claim.
    This video was put on hold while I was waiting twice to be contacted by Memphis so we could figure their issue out. They put me on the back burner and never contacted me, and further more they introduced new products based on this same design. 1 year later they still continue to call these 700 watt RMS Woofers. Please if you can bring this video to their attention.

    For those wondering why I started the mojo at 300 and the dd at 200 you have to look at it differently.
    I pushed one of them at 45% of its rating and had to back it down, while I started the other one at 80% of its rating and still pushed it to 200% of its rating.
    I tried to be fair by using a % of their rating, thsts how the rms starting point was chosen.

      Did you test them at 1 ohm or 4 ohm? And what hz's? Since it's a 6.5 I bet if you tried 700 watts at 100-120hz they'd make it,. Low end is made for bigger subs,. 50hz or lower for 15's and 18's 50-60hz for 12's and 60-80hz for 10's,. If it's 1 ohm and in the 50's for hz than that's probably why it was smoking,. I had a pair of memphis dual 4 ohm 12 mojo and wired them in series making each sub into 8 ohm at a combined 16 ohm with a mojo amp and they lasted over 10 years till I decided to try hooking them up in parallel together than individually wired series before the outer cone ripped apart,. The subs still worked, never blew just separated around the foam,. And I played them hard those ten years through north dakota winters of 20-30below and 100+ heat in the summer until some crack head stole the mojo amp and the other pair of memphis m3 10's I had,.

    Good video. We definetly need someone to do this tests on subs. We have Big D Wiz doing all the great amp dyno vids, but he usually doesnt do sub vids. Good to see , this way we can actually see if these subs can handle rated. Memphis is a good company, so if you trusted them at their word, bought these, put rated power on them, you may be disappointed

    I know it's a pain but the added resistive loss to the displacement of an unworn driver will add extra heating straight out of the box. I'd love to see how they do when both fully worn in. The cooling setup gets a chance to work to its fullest. The DD does have the hallowed florida made 'precision econowind' coils though. Best coils in the world for high power applications... period. The best way to test this would have been to find the tuning frequency of the enclosure with each sub using an IMSG. If you were playing below tuning frequency on either woofer it would have killed either of them. My level 5s struggle if I play too low, but if I play around tuning frequency I can full tilt for days.

      Keep in mind these are great woofers that are majorly affected by their poor power rating. They are some of the cleanest woofers I have heard in this price catagory. I do believe the Mesa 8 inch subwoofer is the identical woofer and can be had a bit cheaper.
      If it is power handing you are aiming for then DD, DC, and SD are the to go to brands for that, DD Would be the better side of SQ than the other 2 but it all depends on your goal.

    • @Zack-dk3pt
      @Zack-dk3pt 4 роки тому +1

      clamped from where and did you clamp peak or rms?. very clearly something wrong with your statement when they are rated for 700w rms totaling 1400w rms for the pair and you claim 1700 sustained for "quite a while". even with properly rated subs that is a very far fetched claim. i will assume you are running them at 1ohm? if so then with a good class d amp you maybe running 80% efficient which means 1700rms at the amps output would have you pulling about 140 amps from the electrical system at a sustained 14v assuming you have a rock solid electrical system. "the wifes car" usually implies stock or nearly stock? unless it is not and you have 0 gauge runs with 2 purpose made batteries and a 200 amp+ alternator. all very weird for a pair of 8s in the wifes car... also higher frequencies require less power and even less power to kill the sub at the tuned frequency of the box. i would expect those kind of numbers being clamped at the amps input with the two subs paired to maybe 4 ohms and the box tuned to a low 25hz and you get that kind of power consumption playing at 40hz. honestly either way you look at it ,assuming you are telling the truth, you must be running an excessively overpowered amp for what its worth for those subs.

      I saw your deleted comment and wanted to reply. You said I used 1 brands box to test a speaker that wasnt designed for it.
      The box is designed with its specs regardless of what speaker you fit in it. I have built many boxes for these mojos, and I can make them sound far superior in a custom enclosure but the one thing I cannot do is get them to hold their RMS rating under any circumstance. Broke in for months makes no difference when it comes to their 700 watt rms claim, its just false.
      So when I spoke to them about this they tried explaining to me that music play isn't like that. And the problem with that statement is RMS means just that, 24/7 power handling, Higher frequencys, AKA 80 and 120 were even worse for the power handling. They need to be rerated to 250 to 300 RMS, and maybe 500 W-RMS ( Which would be music play )
      But you will find this woofer in my top 10 beloved woofers, its just a bad rating that stops it from being higher on the list.

Memphis builds a box for them now and I've seen their displays at a shop near me. It's awesome. They sound excellent for what they are. These subs need a break in time, just like a vehicle. Random, how do you think a pair of these MOJO 6.5” in the truck enclosure they sell, will fair with a VIV 900.5 Amp at 500 watts for the mono sub channel?
    Based on this video, my feeling is 500 watts to a pair of 6.5” MOJO’s might actually be right in the sweet spot for these woofers.
    Interestingly, I asked Memphis themselves and the guy told me I would really need to push them with a stronger amplifier, either the 1100 watt VIV or greater. I was skeptical of a 6.5” woofer with that kind of power handling at about $150 a woofer, and it looks like your tests justify my skepticism.
    If these subs are powered appropriately, would you recommend them from an SQ perspective?

      I think 750 watts RMS a pair is as much as they would ever need so I don't think your going wrong with 500 watts RMS from a viv amplifier.
      Memphis is really pushing this one because they are able to deny warranty by it having a burnt voice coil and Ive seen this personally when a customer tried to directly return them to Memphis. Its a win win for them, recommend more power than a small voice coil can handle and then deny the warranty claim because 1 person is not going to take them to court.

      @@RandomAudioGuys I was thinking about trying them out but then seen this video of the little brother to em dying pretty easily. So it kinds made me a lil nervous to pick up a couple 8"s. Iv had a few mojo 12"s and 15"s and I had two 15" memphis LVS subs a few years back. They was ok you would figure they would be awesome by the design but sounded pretty normal compared to other 15"s within the power range. And I currently have a pair M6 Mojo 12"s and they absolutely slam. But we got a new car and I was going to throw my old Sundown Xv2 15" in it. But we got space issues the box and Sub take the entire trunk. It's a 2010 VW CC TSI Turbo sport. So I threw in two Sundown SA V3 8"s and they hit pretty hard and sound like 12"s that's why I love em. But I been thinking about going to memphis for 8"s and trying them because iv heard they are clean and crisp and hit hard. So I wanted to switch it up a little plus I like the mini mojo enclosures they are beautiful. So I was thinking either trade the Sundown SA V3 8"s for a pair of m6 mojo 8"s or just buy em and if I don't like em as good I can always just swap em out real fast.. how do they compare to the Sundown SA V3 8"s?? Or am I wasting my time swapping to the mini mojo 8"s??? I deff like the box so I'll prob buy the box memphis made for em for looks n put the Sundowns in it. I also got two Sundown X v3 8"s but I wanna put them in a pickup lol

    Is DD still owned by the original owner who designed the Mmats Juggernaut sub before he started his own company DD ? Still the same quality as the dd9515 i had 17 years ago ?

    • @RandomAudioGuys
      @RandomAudioGuys  3 роки тому

      Owned by Jasa Lang and his wife. Still strong as ever. And it does feel like each time they do a revision and you go back and look at something a few revisions older you can tell they are always heading in the right direction.
      Sadly with some of the recent Memphis orders you can feel they are staging a Rockville level product with bloated power ratings , but there are a few products they make that are shining through, such as the Memphis Belle amp making a new appearance.

      Little bit of a port noise but it's a huge improvement over the 6.5 inch version. And for the most part a good setup.

    Bro I don’t know what you all have going on or what Memphis has going on but I for sure had 2800 W going to for those speakers in a 370 Z I’ll show you pictures of the build and my speakers never even got warm. I had a 4000 W crescendo running, of course, not turned up all the way, but they it pretty accurately at a power output of 3000 watch with the settings I had and the volume settings that we set and I would jam that thing out all the time continuously sometimes for two hours straight driving down the interstate never had an issue and I know for sure absolutely positive from the professional build that I have with the right size of wire, oxygen free copper as well that those speakers handle 700 W RMS no sweat no problem at all whatsoever. I don’t know what y’all have going on but

      The 1506 is not marketed against the Mojo, price no performance, I don't know if comparing a strong american woofer like that would have been treated by the community as a fair comparison.
