Adam Capwell I went out too grab some to but I live in a small town with 3 liquor stores and none of them have monkey shoulder ☹️. So I got four roses definitely not bad but I feel like I’m missing out on monkey shoulder.
@Jerome b williams Its interesting when you start going for more concentrated stuff as chocolate, cigars, honey, whisky, etc, when you go into less flavorate things it tastes and feels as nothing. Good for begginers tho, start with the less, as so you can enjoy later more the sophisticated ones.
I love the non snobbish approach to whisky these two have. Great watch. This shows that you don't have to spend a fortune on single malt scotch to drink great whisky. I've had roughly half of these and now need to try the rest!
I just bought the first two you showed in this video. I just cracked open the Monkey this evening and it was delicious! I literally am just getting into Whiskey and really appreciated this video. Thanks guys!!
I never learned to appreciate whiskey until recently and almost age 65. I drank my share of JD and WT 40 years ago but never appreciated them. Bought a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter cask last week after watching one of your reviews. Almost spit out the first sip it was so unfamiliar. I won't say bad. but the second sip was different. Not good but not bad. After third sip I started to fall in love. Thank you for making the rest of my life much more enjoyable! I think my wife has a crush on Daniel.
G'Day Daniel and Rex. I discovered your Channel through The Modern Rogue but it was Daniel's magnificent beard and freakishly extensive Whisk(e)y knowledge had kept me coming back. I love the Whisk(e)y facts almost as much as Rex mooching your drink when you turn away. This has happened on at least three occasions. I"m 18 years old (which is the legal age to drink in Australia) and I have recently completed my RSA Responsible Service of Alcohol. This allows me to legally serve people alcohol. Your explanations of how Whisk(e)y is classified has been a big help as i have recently applied for a Job at a local Club. Keep up the excellent work, you've got yourself a life long fan.
Thank you guys so much for all your videos. When I turned 21 I got a job at specs and didn’t know Much about alcohol(especially bourbons and whiskey). Yall have taught me a lot and help me earn a lot of respect from customers and fellow employees. If you ever have trouble finding something special please come down to specs at San Antonio! I’ll be more than happy to help you out in anyway possible.
I bought myself a bottle of Michter's Unblended American Whiskey from this video, and I have to say I'm absolutely astounded. It's become my consistent go-to when sharing a whiskey neat with a friend/guest. Cost me $45 here in NYC, but for me is vastly superior to so many other American whiskeys I've tried around that price point. Great recommendation, Rex!
I am a total beginner and my father showed me my first whisky. Laphroaig 10. Somehow, I hated it and I loved it the same time. The first few scotches I tasted were the very smokey ones. Then I tested my first Bourbon. Woodford Reserve. My whole world changed. That was I think the greatest experience I had in 2020. Greetings from Germany
I started with Scotch and stayed with it for over 20 years. I've only recently started deeply exploring bourbons. The bourbons are comparatively like liquid candy, lol. Good stuff!
The sparkle effects added while you said, "it's all bright and sparkly!" were a very nice touch! Thanks for the video. I just found this channel and am really enjoying the content and the personalities!
Thank you guys very much for all this great content! Not only are you not snobby and pretentious but you guys truly give good information on whiskey and just enjoy it! Im a student from Finland and have been for a long time on a quest to find the true beauty of whiskey, and the more i drink it the more i love it, and through your videos my knowledge about what it is that i enjoy has expanded greatly! Thank you, keep it up!

You guys are the best. I got some Buffalo Trace last night and was not at all disappointed. I have also tried some of your recommendations from other videos.
One of my favourites for the money is Glenfiddich 15 Solera reserve. To me it's around 95% of the complexity of Glenfiddich 18 but for nearly half the price, and that is pretty significant.
As a 22 year old in a College Town, I will say that my go to whiskey in a bar is Jameson and the probably my favorite whiskey right now is Redbreast 12 which I bought because of y'all's recommendation

Love your Channel. So nice to watch you two drink and talk about my favorite drink. Really nice job. BTW the Glenfarclas 8y is a really nice whisky for not a lot of money. Got it for about 20€ in Northern Germany.
I think Evan Williams is the biggest bang for buck whiskey. It's just a fantastic, if not plain and borderline boring because of how normal it is, bourbon. And you can get it for 12 bux here. Insane. OGD114 is also a fantastic high rye bourbon. Pert near barrel proof for just under $30.
Def agree about the Evan Williams. People turn their nose at it I think because of the low price point, but its truely a damn good bourbon. Search Corvus Mile for some good acoustic tunes and some whiskey vids.
Its funny listening to these prices. Laphroaig is 55 here now. Buffalo Trace can't be found, but I would rather drink Elijah Craig anyway. Bulleit rye for 27 is now my bang for the buck king if I don't want to drink Bushmills. Glenlivit 12 year is 40 bucks at the cheap places... Crazy.
Man I remember being able to get four roses single barrel for about 40 bucks before the pandemic. I miss that, it was so good for that price, but for 50 plus bucks now it’s definitely a splurge. Still a damn fine bourbon! I got my start with whiskey on the monkey shoulder
My top 5 for the value are: 1. George Dickel 12 2. Evan Williams Bottled in Bond 3. Evan Williams Single Barrel 4. Elijah Craig Small Batch 5. Jim Beam Bonded
I found your channel by a different source. "Old Fart" here (retired now) and enjoy my Whiskey as a Neat Sippper/or 3-5 drop water drip (sniff, slow sip, hold, taste, swallow, hold, breath) meathod. I'm no damn snob...a hard ass working man...but I relax and enjoy my Whiskey as a reward to a day or weeks work. I subscribed after watching a few videos, because alot of what you say is "CORRECT"....no UA-cam lies here. Well done!!!
I love Buffalo Trace!!!! My go to budget bourbon. I have never understood the Monkey Shoulder love. It's by no means terrible. I'm also not a smoke snob, I can enjoy a whisky on the mellow, or sweet side. I just think there is far better Scotch at similar price points available (atleast everywhere I've been). I'd make an argument for Knob Creek, Single Barrel for bang for your buck. If you factor in Taste, availability, typical price, and strength. Don't need much of it to get you going, taste deceptively good for the alchohol content, you can find it just about anywhere (in the US) and it's usually not to pricey 30-50 range most places I've been
As a UK based Whiskey Drinker I would also recommend: Irish Whiskey: Paddy £22-25 Islay: Talisker 10 yr £35 Speyside: Benromach 10 yr £30 Highland: Ardmore Legacy £20-£25 Welsh: Pendryn Legend (or Myth) £30 Indian: Amrut Fusion £50 Taiwanese: Kavalan Classic Single Malt £50-£60
You guys have inspired me. Went out to my local whiskey spot. Had a midleton very rare 2016, red breast 15, bushmillls 21, Glenfarclas 25, yellow spot, red spot, and a Jameson 18. Loved them all. Then oddly had an Appleton 12 and Ron Zacapa 23 rums. Lovely too.
Funny, as I'm watching this in April 14 2023 I realized I purchased a bottle of Laphroaig 10 at Costco 6 years ago (2017) for about $36.00, today at the liquor store it was $65.00, every whiskey review I watch that was done pre-covid has gone way up!
It really is crazy how much the market has changed. It's amazing that there is so much interest in whiskey nowadays, but the demand it has caused is hurting by wallet. Lol
It's good but a little esoteric so probably not on a list like this. Also hard to find under $50 these days. The lasanta is also quite nice if you like sherried Scotch.
I actually prefer the Bulliett Rye over the bourbon. It's one of my go to selections when I'm out to dinner. Pretty easy to find, especially here in Kentucky.
George Arvanitidis , shockingly none of heaven hills products make their cut, even though Evan Williams is the number 2 most sold bourbon in the world and way cheaper than the number 1. List is a joke.
Monkey is a blend, and all 3 of the distilleries used sell their individual Scotches for $40+ a bttl. Monkey is deliciously malty. Four Roses Single Barrel at 100 proof, and so many different combos of their recipes, and all are great. Very good bourbon. Good calls.
@@rel3979 not too rare where I am (upper midwest). Made by Buffalo Trace so it's typically sold wherever BT is sold as long as they sell higher shelf stuff as well
Two things... first, please show the bottle label close enough we can see it. We are going hunting afterwards and need to recognize it. Second, got rid of the ridiculous medallion... love the video. You guys rock!
I'm an American living in the Philippines and it's likely in the running for the best place on the planet to become an alcoholic :-) Johnnie Walker sets the stage here with the Black Label being probably the best deal going at only about $19 a liter; Double Black is about $10 more per liter. Gold Label Reserve is about $25/750ml. The Green Label is about $39/750ml. And the Platinum Label is about $59/750ml. I don't know how that's even possible. But if they're counterfeit then someone is doing a damn good job. For mixing, I've seen the Red Label for as low as $10 a liter. But the Philippines has a decent 5-year-old 80 proof whiskey (White Castle) that works great for that at less than $5 for a 750ml bottle. Glenlivet 12 is about $32/750ml, Glenfiddich 12 a couple of Dollars more. Maker's Mark is about $16.50 for a 750ml bottle. Bulleit is about $28 for a liter. Monkey Shoulder is about $32 for a 750ml bottle, 40% ABV.
WT 101 is the best high rye budget bourbon. I guess I'd say Jim Beam Black is the best high wheat budget bourbon. High Rye and High Wheat Bourbons are basically two different spirits in my opinion.
Hi! Just a question, could you make (if you haven't already) a video where you pick out different wiskeys starting from beginner to intermediate and then to advanced? Would be nice for a newbie like myself. I really like what you are doing by the way! Cheers.
I am new to whiskey. I here are a few that I like. Monkey Shoulder, Four Roses single barrel, Knob Creek single barrel, WoodFord Reserve. LAGAVULIN 16 which does take some time to get used too. They did a video on best. Whiskey glasses the one they are using. Is a noseing whiskey glass. Costs seven dollars and works great.
man, i wish laphroaig 10 was as daniel said "or less" than $30's or $40's in my area. both laphroaig 10 and ardbeg 10 are both $50 and lagavulin 16 runs about $100
whiskyscotch d -This channel’s reviews have created demand so that prices and rarity have increased for many of these brands. Outside of brands like Buffalo Trace and Evan Williams, most of these whiskeys have shot up 10$ for less rare and $15-40 for more rare. It’s crazy.
Here in Italy, laphroaig 10 is set on 29 euro finished and lagavulin 16 on 48 euro finished. And I count on Amazon, maybe at the local store is more or less similar
I found a bottle of knappogue castle 12 year for $35 out the door because the liquor store bought a barrel of it and nobody was buying it. I keep trying to talk them into buying another barrel.
Just curious if you guys have done a video on what scotch you'd recommend to someone new to scotches as a must try in regards to each region. For example, what scotch or distillery is a must try to get an understanding of what that region is best known for each region. i.e.. highlands, isles, etc??? Looking to expand my bar :)
I won a few bucks at the casino last week, now after watching this I want to spend all my winnings on some new bottles...just wish I had those Austin prices
from Kentucky some of my favs have become so well known that if not affordable any longer, thanks for this kind of content, btw sipping flatboat 125 while watching, btw 1 hour from Bardstown
Monkey shoulder is always stocked in my liquor cabinet. Once it runs lows I buy another. Down here in Florida I’m getting a bottle for like 30 bucks. Can’t beat it. Everyone I’ve ever recommended it to or let try love it.
Hi all, from Holland here. I really like en drink Aberlour most of the time. Just bought myself two bottles of Aberlour Triple Cask, what a great en pleasant whisky to drink! About 49 Euro a bottle in Europe here, but last made a great offer voor 39 euro, thats really a deal for quality like this. Love this channel more by the day, keep u the good work. The triple cask is very nice to drink together with a good quality cigar. Drink other brands as well, pity that one lifetime is far to short to experience al pleasures in life.
I watched this as one of the first vids of yours. I am now going through all vids and tasting some humble scotches of my own, and boy i get more out of this episode now that i am a month and 200+ episodes in
I always recommend people try George Dickel 12 at least once. It's not a bourbon so I feel like it gets overlooked. An incredibly easy drinking whiskey at a good price.
As an example of how I've found whiskies to REALLY depend on what you've tasted before - take the "budget" but surprisingly well acclaimed Highland Black 8yo (by Aldi) - on my first trial of it - it merely tasted like watered down Black Label - with the smokey notes really muted. However, I've now just tried it after a glass of Bulleit Bourbon, and wow. It now tastes completely different. The sweetness has been turned up to eleven, there's none of the hints of smokiness anymore and it is all fruity crème brûlée & butterscotch on the nose and in taste - crazy! It almost tastes like a desert wine now O___o - has anyone else had a similarly extreme experience with whiskies tasting completely different?
Ardbeg 10 is so much nicer than Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16 these days, it's also natural colour and non-chillfiltered. Caol Ila is another beautiful Islay malt but only from independent bottlers and at cask strength.
I know this one's not cheap but it blowed my tastebuds right away: Glenfarclas 105 cask strength. A reaaally nice scotch that costs 100$ CAD Love the videos btw, just started watching these and it is really interesting!!
I paid 35€ for a Liter bottle and yes, way to often overlooked when it's on to value. All the niceness of the Orange notes cranked to 11. My favorite non smokey scotch atm

Don't need much of it to get you going, taste deceptively good for the alchohol content, you can find it just about anywhere (in the US) and it's usually not to pricey 30-50 range most places I've been
As a UK based Whiskey Drinker I would also recommend:
Irish Whiskey: Paddy £22-25
Islay: Talisker 10 yr £35
Speyside: Benromach 10 yr £30
Highland: Ardmore Legacy £20-£25
Welsh: Pendryn Legend (or Myth) £30
Indian: Amrut Fusion £50
Taiwanese: Kavalan Classic Single Malt £50-£60
Talisker is not Islay though
Old Grandad 114. Usually around $30. Smooth, high proof beauty.
I'm intrigued and when payday rolls around I will buy a bottle of Michter's.
I also enjoy Crown Royal Black.
I want to shop at the "or less" place!
Henry McKenna 10yr Single Barrell BIB- $35 by me. Excellent bourbon, and fantastic value.
rweb82 absolutely, a definite keeper, one that i keep an unopened bottle outta fear it'll go away lol. truly a one of a kind!
My go-to! Pikesville rye is also amazing, though a bit pricier than HM.
+rweb82 I agree with you about Henry McKenna 10. It goes for $32 in my area.
I couldn't agree more. I bought monkey shoulder and I am tempted to dump it down the toilet because it tastes like it should go there.
Absolutely. $30 where I live. 100 proof, and delicious. Incredible for the price.
Lol
I'm a big fan of Glenmorangie, the quinta ruban port cask finish. I just picked up my first bottle recently and 10 / 10 would buy again and again. =)
I agree....surprised it didn't make the list
It's good but a little esoteric so probably not on a list like this. Also hard to find under $50 these days. The lasanta is also quite nice if you like sherried Scotch.
I actually prefer the Bulliett Rye over the bourbon. It's one of my go to selections when I'm out to dinner. Pretty easy to find, especially here in Kentucky.
They sell the Bulliet rye here in Ireland, love the spice, it is addictive .
And the bottle is pretty well designed.
@@IndridCold. Dia dhuit!
Hey Boys, Nice videos! I think you missed the Evan Williams single barrel that I think is the best value whiskey out there. Hope you like it!
George Arvanitidis , shockingly none of heaven hills products make their cut, even though Evan Williams is the number 2 most sold bourbon in the world and way cheaper than the number 1. List is a joke.
+Donn Testa George Dickel 8 is another good affordable whiskey that gets overlooked.
oldies geek , I been meaning to try their products
Donn Testa Elijah Craig is Heaven Hills which they've reviewed but yes the EW 1776 is best for cheapest but Eagle Rare best for $30
+Eric Blair Have you ever had Henry McKenna or Russell's Reserve? Those two are very good and cost about $30.
Monkey is a blend, and all 3 of the distilleries used sell their individual Scotches for $40+ a bttl. Monkey is deliciously malty. Four Roses Single Barrel at 100 proof, and so many different combos of their recipes, and all are great. Very good bourbon. Good calls.
buffalo trace and eagle rare my go to....4 roses single barrel option 3, sometimes option 3 is elijah craig small batch
Eagle Rare!
32.99 at my local store, great bourbon.
Andy Reid One of my favorites.
Hands down best value by far
Fantastic choice, one of my favorites.
eagle rare is hella rare to find tho no pun intended
@@rel3979 not too rare where I am (upper midwest). Made by Buffalo Trace so it's typically sold wherever BT is sold as long as they sell higher shelf stuff as well
I would go with the Irish Greenspot, for best at price and value...
I'm with you on this one. I haven't found it for under $50 yet, but it's worth it (for me).
You really can't go wrong with having Buffalo Trace around as your everyday whisky.
Two things... first, please show the bottle label close enough we can see it. We are going hunting afterwards and need to recognize it. Second, got rid of the ridiculous medallion... love the video. You guys rock!
Connemara peated single malt. I get it for 23€ and for that it's amazing
In Quebec, all of those prices are about double in CAD. Dang socialized liquor stores.
TytoMobile yeah I get monkey shoulder for $27
@@sirjacobanderson Monkey Shoulder is $65 here. Laphroaig quarter cask is $80, 10 is $85.
TytoMobile i feel u man it’s extremely expensive but I always find myself still picking them up
You can get 21 year Canadian rye for $75 tho.
I'm an American living in the Philippines and it's likely in the running for the best place on the planet to become an alcoholic :-)
Johnnie Walker sets the stage here with the Black Label being probably the best deal going at only about $19 a liter; Double Black is about $10 more per liter.
For the money, I highly recommend Buffalo Trace or Evan Williams Single Barrel.
Evan what?! No... you need to stop! Get out of here, go!!!
Oh I know what it taste like and I don't want to taste it again
EW Single Barrel is great for the money. Been drinking it for years.
@@beentheredonethat856 dont tell others what to like
@@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733 did I hurt your feelings?
Glad you guys touched on the Glenfarclas. Very under the radar but very good!
Drinking Monkey Shoulder right after a Laphroaig 10. Its a taste ive never seen before in there
Wild Turkey 101 for best value! Never tried Michter's so I'm looking forward to that, thanks!
WT 101 is the best high rye budget bourbon.
I guess I'd say Jim Beam Black is the best high wheat budget bourbon.
High Rye and High Wheat Bourbons are basically two different spirits in my opinion.
@@christopherdeluague385 I fully agree!
WT 101 is probably the best of the sub prime bourbons.
Costs seven dollars and works great.
they did one sort of like that, you'll need to hunt for it. but then you'll be watching more of their vids, so......win win
man, i wish laphroaig 10 was as daniel said "or less" than $30's or $40's in my area. both laphroaig 10 and ardbeg 10 are both $50 and lagavulin 16 runs about $100
whiskyscotch d -This channel’s reviews have created demand so that prices and rarity have increased for many of these brands.
Ditto me, Lagavulin is about 100. But they occasionally have Laphroig for $39.99 as a special.
Because of you two guys, I finally purchased a bottle of Monkey Shoulder. I'm amazed how much I like it. Keep up the good work!!!
My dad loves Laphroaig 10, I really can't get used to it, but I absolutely adore Lagavulin 16 whenever I have a chance to have it.
I love how they get progressively more drunk xD
Monkey shoulder is my unicorn, yeah my sights aren’t set to high 😂
I found a bottle of knappogue castle 12 year for $35 out the door because the liquor store bought a barrel of it and nobody was buying it. I keep trying to talk them into buying another barrel.
Picked up a bottle of Michter's 10 year single barrel rye recently. Definitely not cheap, but amazing. Worth the price for sure.
If you have never tried Islay whiskies, I would recommend Islay Mist as an good entry and it's easily my favorite blended whisky.
I get Monkey Shoulder for 25 a bottle where I'm at hehehe. It's my standard budget scotch.
Guys, you can't do this, i won't sleep tonight.... What was Rex's dad joke???
Great choices!
Balvenie 12 year doublewood. Best $38 u can spend on a bottle.
I prefer the 14year Caribbean cask... it’s amazing !
Absolutely second that, it’s an amazing whisky for the price!
Laphroig 10 "... cigar smoking walrus..." fantastic!
I watched this as one of the first vids of yours. I am now going through all vids and tasting some humble scotches of my own, and boy i get more out of this episode now that i am a month and 200+ episodes in
Elijah Craig...hands down by far my favorite.
Just tried this last night of the first time. Really enjoyed it. It's a very close number 2 for me to Buffalo Trace. So smooth and solid price
Watching this in 2024 and hearing those prices makes me cry.
Started with Buffalo Trace, Glenlivet 12, and Knob.
FYI this particular whisky is the "own brand" whisky from a "budget" supermarket here in the UK, RRP £12.99!!
whoa i gotta see of aldi sells liquor here i never seen them with any
+mike force search the adidas striped one on youtube and you might think differently :)
i can't imagine what that means...
goatse
Eagle Rare is awesome for the money.
Brennan Guernsey I just bought my first bottle of eagle rare yesterday, and it was fucking fantastic. Got it for like $30.
$26.99 For Eagle Rare in Erlanger, Kentucky Costco....amazing!
Agreed 100% it’s my go to!
Ardbeg 10 is so much nicer than Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16 these days, it's also natural colour and non-chillfiltered. Caol Ila is another beautiful Islay malt but only from independent bottlers and at cask strength.
Thanks for ironing your Green T shitrt for the video.
I know this one's not cheap but it blowed my tastebuds right away: Glenfarclas 105 cask strength. A reaaally nice scotch that costs 100$ CAD
Love the videos btw, just started watching these and it is really interesting!!
I paid 35€ for a Liter bottle and yes, way to often overlooked when it's on to value. All the niceness of the Orange notes cranked to 11. My favorite non smokey scotch atm
