- Ah yes, sixteen. The magic number of Scotland. Not 15. Not 17. Right on the money. The gents try Laphroaig's venture while comparing to the classic 10 Year and a Lagavullin 16.
Thanks to Patron Saint Sam Gallimore for the bottle. Praise be.
To me it smells a bit like a roller skating rink that held birthday parties during the 90s where the parents smoked cigarettes inside. Absolutely beautiful.
*Joan Jett*
.... I LUV ROCK n ROLL!
That is a very specific sense memory and I can almost smell it
Hahahaha awesome!!!! Nosing on a next level!
I'm always reminded on the smell in the one breakfast place where I grew up that refused to cave to the non-smokers. There was a thick cloud of cigarette smoke hanging in the air, mixed with the smell of bacon and sausage.
But, the roller skating rink is a great one, too. I can totally remember that.
I know that smell! I just need the whisky. Been on the list for a bit
So glad you enjoyed the Laphroaig 16. And getting an appearance from two of my favorite bottles, Lag 16 and Laphroaig 10, was the icing on the cake. Please share a glass with Emma as I know she likes Laphroaig.
thank you saint gallimore
Rex, as you are have difficulty finding the meats I recommend going to Arby's, because they have the meats.
You know you're in deep when you start calling Laphroaig soft
My Islay journey thus far, has been, in chronological order: Laphroaig 10, Uigeadail, Corryvreckan, Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 16, An Oa.
When I got to the Lagavulin, at the time, I felt it was a little too subtle for my tastes. But as I've been going back and forth between those aforementioned bottles, my appreciation for the Lagavulin grew. I doubt I'll be able to source Laphroaig 16, but I'll keep a weather eye out.
@@JLUnit416 I remembered Islay (1st was Caol Ila tho) after Corry from 1st batch. Mindbreaking.
Actually I think Laphroaig 10 is the most harsh one
Whisky exchange website has some
I love Laphroaig and this has become my favorite UA-cam channel once I finally stumbled across it. You guys are informative, entertaining, and off your rockers. Much like Laphroaig. Lol
I just picked up a bottle of the Laphroaig 16 in Maryland for $87 dollars, can’t wait to crack it open tonight!
So crazy, I just came across this channel researching a bottle of whiskey I bought and I’m pretty sure I met you (Daniel) at the Wizard Academy about five years ago. You did a whiskey tasting for our group, we ended up playing guitar and drinking whiskey all night and I was hurting bad the next morning.... Roy noticed so he kept filling up my wine glass while I was dying in class the next day.
My favorite episode this year!!
Wow I didn’t need to watch this to know it was worthwhile. You have me at Laphr.....
all the best!
I had my first laphroaig this weekend.
welcome to the cult...
Whatdya think?
@@aliciaanderson873 definitely one of the most interesting whiskeys i have had so far.
@@jaredchin2731
I really like it. I’ve only had the 10 and the 10 cask strength so far
@@aliciaanderson873 I recommend the quarter cask
Those bottles... certainly something to be thankful for
In Australia those four bottles would be $1000. That's some serious magnificence in the bastarding! And kudos for the donations because for a while back there WV did become a bourbon review channel.
I really take your reviews seriously and buy by whiskeys accordingly! Thanks guys
“Fricken Emma” haha! Emma is the best and deserves a promotion and a raise.
I started an infinity bottle with about 50% Monkey Shoulder as a cheap starting base, and added Talisker and Bruichladdich. Both are very brine heavy for me (which I love) , and the touch of smoke from the Talisker was nice as well.
When a distillery get their aged , peated whisky right it can be really fantastic. I have not had this expression though. I probably wouldn't pay the price.
The comparisons with the 10 and the Lag 16 are useful. Nice work fellas.
I remember the lagavullin 16 as something like spiced condensed milk with cocoa butter, cloves. I just loved that thing mannn
I love the 16, so darn good! Thank goodness for Scotch!
I legit paused this mid video to see if any local stores showed the Laphroaig 16 in inventory... they did not 😭
The hunt is on; I've got to try this for myself!
Edit: Thanks for the review guys, keep up the good work.
None for me either
I want this soooo much now! I already love Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16...now I'm coveting this Laphroaig 16. How dare you sirs tempt me to covet thus just before the holiday season!?!
Just bought my first Laphroaig 10. Happy about the timing.
welcome to the cult. it's a classic.
Try the cask strength 👍
A week and a half and we get "frigin' Emma" HAHAHAHAHA!
FINALLY!!!! about time
I actually thought they gave up and conceded.
High five Emma! Laphroaig fans unite!!
@@ars721 It isn't a joke. It's the truth and the truth will never die.
@@ars721 Lightweight. ;-)
Great job guys
"Friggin, Emma" I fell on the floor! LOL, Busted!
Lagavulin 16 is my favourite Islay. I love the complexity of the sweetness and the smoke.
Benromach Heavily Peated from Speyside is lovely. There are also lovely peated malts from Campbeltown.
Old Ballantruan are making some tasty stuff too. They have a NAS, a 10 and 15 all bottled at 50%. It's actually peated Tomintoul but it's excellent mainland peated whisky.
I had a sampler 200ml bottle of lagavulin 16 that I never got the mint that you talk of. Last night I opened a 750ml bottle and found the mint. Very interesting note to find in a scotch and really like it
Haha when rex gets hit with the whiskey feels and words become hard. Love it.
Laphroaig 16 at Arrow Wine & Spirits for $90 on Far Hills in Dayton, OH near Oakwood. Call first but as of Saturday 11/21/20 there were 2-3 bottles left.
My jaw dropped when Daniel blended those three at the end...
A dance of delicious! A tango of taste! A flamenco of flavor! A waltz of whisk(e)y!!
For a peated speyside, that Benriach Curiositas that Daniel referred to is good and pretty easy to find compared to like Balvenie Peat Week. It is in their regular line up and absolutely has that speyside character but with a significant peat layer.
Daniel has both super taste and super hearing, he can hear down to an 8th of a note difference in squeal.
For the decanter infinity bottle, make sure the decanter isn't a lead glass bottle, or lead will leach into the alcohol and give you lead poisoning. Lead glass is relatively safe if you use it for serving, but not for storing (keep it under 2 hours).
Still got a Laphroaig 18 in my bar, so good. Much more character and body then the standard 10 😍🥃
Should've brought Emma in on this one as a third person screaming "SoOoOoO GOOD!"
A great Speyside peat is BenRiach Peat/Port. My favorite Spey Peat wide by a mile!
😆😆😆😆😆😆😆the nosing would make a great SNL skit.😆😆😆😆😆
The cask strength peated Benromach is excellent and good value.
Has there ever been a moment in recent times (that you guys remember) when you started to feel the effects of the whiskey hitting your nervous system which then helped produce a range of most excellent bloopers? You may not have any but if you did...yes please :)
The glendronach peated was reccomended to me when I was enquiring about a good peated highland and my God it is good! But hard to get your hands on.
For the alternative mainland peated whiskies, the Balvenie 14 Peated Triple Wood is excellent
ooohhh yessss!
I saw a bottle of this at my liquor store a few months ago and thought “I’ll come back for it...” and the next time I was there they were all out. Definitely a big regret as it meets Lagavulin 16 in price at $90 and they won’t have it back until next year
Love Ballechin 10 as well as Laphroaig! Ballechin is just so hard to get within the US.
That Lagavulin on the wall in the background looks very Laphroaigish.
I miss these videos :(
Benromach do a great job with their peated one..
I'm pretty sure that's the one Daniel was trying to recall. :)
A nice peated mainland whisky is the Springbank Rundlets & Kilderkins or the more easier to obtain Glenlivet Naddura peated cask
Is Daniel's knife named Sting?
He he, hobbit ref. I aprove of it. 😁
Does it glow blue when Jimmy Third Leg is around?
I just picked up a bottle of Lagavulin 16. And I love it. Now I need to find the Laphroaig 16.
I'm thinking you should change the lock to the vault so Emma can't change bottles on the quintessential wall of whisk(e)y. Just sayin'.
Peated Tomintoul is awesome.
Only 40%, but still VERY tasty.
Ardmore is a Peated highland single malt as well as Glendronach peated.
"You Patron Saint of ....KLONK!"
😂👍
How about Rex and the vibrating meme...
I miss the Laphroaig 18 you used to be able to get for about $90.
Uh I had the 18yr once as a present. So good. Doubled in value since then 🤷♂️
I dropped a load of firewood off for my elderly neighbours in return their son in-law gifted me a part bottle of laphroaig first sip I thought it had gone bad. and now it's one of my favorites
Just scored a Laphroaig 16 in Dayton, OH for $90. Can’t wait to try it.
Where? I will drive a few hours for that! Thanks
was the other peated malt that started with a B Daniel was thinking of Benromach? tried Benromach peat smoke the other day and thought it was very tasty
Love Laph but Laga is my champ. 🤙🏻 Have a nice day e1 🙏🏻👋🏻
Keep up the good work Emma. I'm always a little happier when I see the Laphroaig on the wall.
I remember in an episode a while back you commented about how some of the older stuff is because it had to sit that long to be judged by the distiller to be good enough.
Apparently this brand just takes more time to reach perfection, since the 10 year never seemed that special to me.
Teachers highland malt is lightly peated and under $20. I love it
I find the mint note in spades adding water to the Laphroaig 10 cask strength, really tasty
I did with batch 13. Menthol and pine trees. I wasn't a fan tbh. Batch 15 however, is exceptional. I loved it so much, I bought an additional 3 bottles.
Love the salty peat nose from laphroig. The 10 has been a regular stable in my house for years. Unfortunately, recently the 10 has gone from $42 to $54 at my local total wine. Caol ila is $62! This is due to the tariff war going on. These Islays are nice on occasion, but I wont be drinking from $50 and $60 bottles regularly - im not Gordon Gekko for cripes sake! Switching to bourbon and (hate to say it) local beer.
Aaaaah the boiz finally noticed Emma's mark. We gotta flood the vault with donations of older Islay bottles to compare so they keep checking.
I was just thinking about this kind of comparison the other night - while younger Islays tend to share some commonalities, would older ones also tend towards a particular direction? Makes me wonder if the master distiller/blender at Laphroaig simply picked barrels that would take that 16yr in a similar direction as the Lagavulin.
That dolphin cracked me tf up
So, Rex. I've been tuned in to Whiskey Vault for about a year now. I love the channel.
At first I couldn't understand why you were there. Then I decided that you must be like a brother-in-law or something. Not too long after that, I understood your comedic value to the channel. Now, I have to ask you. Why is Daniel there at all?
I kid obviously about Daniel being there. You guys introduced me to Islay (especially Ardbeg 10) and I will forever be in your debt.
The 10 Cask Strength is my favorite Laphroaig, but the Quarter Cask is the best for your money.
Dude, if I saw those shelves I'd be confident I was dead and gone to heaven (Valhalla).
Just got my first bottle of laphroaig 10 and it was everything I’ve be chasing. I’ve had bourbon Canadian Irish and rye so far an I thought rye was my favorite due to the spice, I tend to dislike overly sweet alcohol and the others were a bit too sweet for my taste. After having my first glass of laphroaig I am head over heals.
I 100% am in the same boat with you. I love rye and I just tried the laphroaig 10 and it’s amazing
Try the the 10 Cask Strength! It’s an elemental flavor beast, and you’ll never want the regular 10 again.
First fill Laphroaig whisky. I like it.
Such great scotches. Soooo Good!
I ordered a Laphroaig in a restaurant and was served Laph16. It was very nice but I will still take the QC every time.
"Friggin Emma"
Wow! These guys have had a few before this review
Daniel's paper is a clear reminder that protection doesn't always work. =P
Just completed dry week, and the bars are closed cause covid, sooooo I drink in my man cave every night while watching old "Cheers" reruns...don't judge...
if I drink too much whisky I start talking to Sam Malone at the screen.
at least when I shout at vault episodes Rex answers...
Sam is THE bartender. I wish I had a bartender like that.
Have you guys experimented with aging in barrels made with woods that aren't typically used?
Oh snap - when I say L16 now is not exclusive. Now I've got to find it.
I've recently recovered from covid but my sense of smell and taste are gone still. I watch these guys just to remember what it was like to smell whiskey.
Hope you get smell and taste back soon.😉
@@silentgarage7273 meet to friend me to
And coincidentally the Laphroaig was back on the shelf.
As for peated stuff from different regions then I would add Longrow.
Damn the Laphroaig on the wall had its cover blown. 🤣
Haven’t had any sacrificed goats 🐐 in a while. This one is as close as it’s gotten in quite I bit I believe
I wanted to see Daniel's face when he tried the blend.
Laphroaig 18 is my all-time favorite whiskey, and if this is even somewhat close, I will have to track down a bottle of this.
try the 25 yr. I had some of that at the scotch & cigar club here in town.
nectar of the gods unfortunately, pretty spendy
@@donoimdono2702 way too rich for my wallet. The 18 was great and fairly reasonable in price. I'm willing to go up to the ~$120 for the 16 if it is comparable, but that's about my limit for a bottle period.
@@donoimdono2702 I tried a pour of the 27 year this week. It was good, but not worth the money to me (I don't regret purchasing it though). If the 18 and 27 were available at the same price, I'd prefer the 18.
@@garretnarjes782 oh I never claimed I would pay that much for it. I just said it was good. personally (unless I had a couple mill in the bank) I won't pay over $75 for booze. too many tasty/reasonably priced drinks out there
For fun yall should put an alarm on the lagavulin like the once you see at cellphone stores
You trying to shatter glass with the high pitch noise lol
You guys have such a hard job I envy you, please tell us what is your top pick on Scottish whiskey.
Whisky
The dolphin boys.
Oban14 is also smokey and from Highlands.
When will there be an episode were Rex and Daniel are tasting a Laphroag and Emma Breaks through the door and demands equal time in tasting! lol With the new found powers of her distilling prowress, she imobilizes Rex and Daniel and makes off with her new found bounty! lol The looks Rex gives then tasting a great whis(e)y are... "priceless"!
I have a question about proof. I know nothing about distilling other than the basic concept of how it's done. What happens as a distillery if a whiskey comes out of the aging process at a lower proof than the distiller wanted? I assume if it's higher than wanted it can just be proofed down. What about if it's not where the distiller wanted it?
Lagavulin 16 is my go to bar none. However; I'm now very interested in the Laphroaig 16....hmmm
So, just out of curiosity, how did they age scotch whiskey before used bourbon barrels were available?
From Spain and Portugal.
The 16 is an Amazon exclusive in the U.K.
Was about to say that... just like the Auchentoshan Sauvignon Blanc
I've gone through 2 bottles of Laphroaig 16 and it's one of my all time favorite bottles... and $104 here... Laphroaig has killed it this past year. the 10cs batch 12 is lights out, the Triple Wood Cairdeas was incredible. FK YA LAPHROAIG. Cheers gents
I've always wondered what the "G" on that Lagavulin bottle is for. I feel like they've had THAT bottle forever.
The G is for me, my name is Gorilla...
LETS HEAR HIS MUSIC!! Ide venture to say a ton of us are musicians!! LETS HERE IT!! Sone of us understand what you meant by, “he might be an 1/8 of a step higher”
All his music is on youtube. Search Daniel Whittington. Its pretty good!
Have to find me a Laphroaig 16 and Lagavulin Double Mature so I can do my own taste test.
Emma is a whiskey ninja 🥷🤣🤣
