  • Vocal Coach Reaction To Kansas LIVE - Carry On Wayward Son - Ken Tamplin
    Boom! Four Thumbs Up!
Kansas' musical style, the fusion of hard rock, southern rock and progressive rock was influenced by several previous bands. The music of Yes and Genesis was inspirational to Kansas, especially demonstrated in the lyrics of Walsh. Kansas’ composition, fusing development and rephrasing with an orchestral mood and shredding guitar, makes for intelligent music. You’d be hard pressed to find a more inspirational band instrumentally, orchestrally or musically.
Recorded in 1976 for the album, “Leftoverture”, the song, “Carry On Wayward Son” was the band’s first major hit.
Fun fact for Bloom County fans: in a 2003 interview with The A.V. Club, Berkeley Breathed, the creator of the Opus comic strip, revealed that "Opus was named after a Kansas song." From the band's 1976 album Leftoverture, the songs "Opus Insert" and the epic "Magnum Opus" could both be the inspiration for the name. He also added, "If you're too young to know who Kansas was, to hell with you.".
Check out my version and stick around for my singing tutorial at the end.

The first Kansas song i've heard was Dust in the Wind. It's amazing how their live show sounds exactly like the album version, and INSANE how they are still doing it after so long.

I saw Kansas way back in the 80's and the energy that Steve Walsh displayed was incredible. He wore work out shorts and knee pads cuz he was all over the place. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Tickets were $8.50 and they rocked

Love Kansas!!! They are my top 3 bands ever!!! So much feeling and well written songs!! The musicianship is top notch!! By the way , when Steve left to form the band streets, Billy Greer ( bassist, singer, acoustic player) came from that band and is still in Kansas after all these years!! He is Awesome as well. Dave hope and Kerry Livgren, Robby Steinhart and Steve are all missed dearly from the fans but the new line ups and members after the original band had and have that same passion to carry the torch and i as a musician and fan am not disappointed at all. They Carry On the music with the skill and passion that the music deserves!!! Kansas is so Awesome!!!! Thank you ken for your words of admirable consent. You know what is good and what lacks . 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶👍😎

Kansas is awesome!!! I think the band is underrated even though they were far more popular in the 1970s. I love their music!! This song is definitely one that when I’m listening to it in the car, I will sit in my driveway with this song until the song is over before I get out of the car. Amazing reaction to an amazing Band Ken. Kansas was one of those bands that had so much talent. They never ever got the recognition they deserved for whatever reason in my opinion. I love the fact they stuck to there guns and played music and sang what they were convicted to sing. Very spiritual stuff in a non spiritual Genre. very few bands at this time were writing these types of lyrics and being successful. There is so much in this song as far as playing and nailing it. I don't care how old they are. this is how you do it. they are schooling this younger generation in this video.

Great to see Kerry doing so well here at this concert. 🙏 You can hear the tension in Steve's cords at times ( especially in Country Fair type settings ) & more head voice, but Steve still sounds fantastic. He was wise to retire & enjoy his Golden Years. Best wishes to them both & RIP to Robby Steihardt. BTW, Outlaws Ken. 6th decade memory eh, LOL. RIP to Hughey Thomasson also. ALSO latter of Skynryd. Green Grass is a killer song & vocals. Sadly, we may have seen the last tour for Gary Rossington, another quiet and unsung guitar hero of mine. So versatile. Alas, I digress. Cheers 🍻

Kansas was one of those bands that every time I saw them they were flawless. It didn't matter who the Personnel was in the band they are just consummate musicians and professionals. Just close your eyes and listen to the cacophony of sound and the layering in the perfect harmonies that come from these incredible musicians. As Ken said it's all live there's no tracks here. I'm still astonished at Mr Walsh he still has one of the purest voices I've ever heard. I loved your cover of the song as well Ken. I'm a bass so I've been working on increasing my range. Just wanted to give a shout out to your course and tell everybody it's well worth the money if you really want to learn how to sing and really improve your vocal tone projection and most of all range. God bless Ken. PS I love that shirt!

I was at that concert... It was in Topeka because Kerry was playing. Here's trivia... When we were waiting to go into the show some people from Europe that didn't have tickets showed up. They wanted to see Kerry play with the band. Coming to Topeka from Europe is like... 3 flights to get to Kansas City then another hour drive to Topeka. They let them in and gave them great seats.

BACK in the days of rock forming bands a lot of the guys in the groups did not know who to select as a frontman, its true, then there were some bands that were assembled or trimmed down with the respective artists to give and THE end sound, of incredible selections,WALSH was a genius selection, you as a vocalist KEN,you know damn well all of those musicians, every band, every time, the vocalist is the reason for the genius musicians carrying the melody, but the voice is the reason for the GLORY of sound projection, its all of it, KANSAS is a band where all the players are just super brilliant, there are no learners in KANSAS,they are all top tier PROS,even when they splashed, this is the one thing that amazes,me,they didn't know how damn good they were,WE TOLD THEM,WE THE WORLD OF ROCK MUSIC LISTENERS,TOLD THEM,LOUDLY-------------GENIUSES LIKE WALSH owe the world nothing in having to continually prove they can wail, its on vinyl and cds and recorded history, thank god its recorded, listen to DOWN THE ROAD 1976 and hear genius, with headphones on,truly genius recording

Prog is brilliant, skill and talent, epic tunes, long tunes, and above all skill and talent. Band like Yes and Purple and Rainbow who have gone through line up changes forced and unforced as well. Prog and metal bands are the ones writing tomorrows classic and long and well remembered tunes, not just in for 1 hit song or a few hits, in for the long hall and having a career and tunes they can play for the rest of their lives, hopefully. Thanks once again Ken.

You might want to look into the new Kansas. Same Kansas style, same great musicianship, but now there are seven of them, so they can play the deep cuts from former albums. Their live sets are 2 and 1/2 hours long and the play albums from start to finish. They also have a new album out in 2016 and are going to have another new one out in the middle of 2020. They are going into the studio after the first of the year.
OK, Steve Walsh isn't in the band any more, nor is Kerry Livgren, Dave Hope or Robby Steinhardt, nor John Elefante. But, Phil Ehart is still on drums, and Rich Williams is still smoking it on guitar. Billy Greer has been in the band playing bass now, longer than Dave Hope was in the band.
David Ragsdale has been playing the violin in the band for a very long time, too. He also plays very good guitar. And another great guitar player and writer is Zak Rizvi, so they have the potential of three great guitars playing on stage. Tom Brislin is on keyboards and if you Google his name, you'll see just how good his chops are.
Ronnie Platt is on vocals and he's not trying to be the new Steve Walsh. Of course, nobody could be. Ronnie is making a name for himself in the band and writing lyrics for the most recent new album and surely for the new one. And David, Tom, Billy and Zak all sing great harmony and Billy even sings lead on some songs.
I hate to keep harping about them, but Kansas is still around and they are still rocking. Go to see a live show or purchase the latest album The Prelude Implicit. A great band continuing in their Kansas tradition.

    Hey Ken!!!
Big Kansas fan here!! Like #1
But a more impressive sound of them is ANYTHING from Two for the Show, (part of it recorded @ The Fabulous Fox in ATL, GA.)
Steve Walsh & the guys were FLAWLESS!!
no tracking, what you hear is EXACTLY what you see,
And, they were all so cool!!
Steve Walsh wax VERY athletic!! Quite the eye-candy bonus!! Ehart was a phenomenal drummer!!
But nobody, NOBODY has the voice of Steve Walsh,
God broke the mold with that throat!!

Habit Forming YESS!! Rik Emmett is the most underrated rock vocalist and lead guitarist ever. His vocal range was incredible. IMO, his vocals on “Fight the Good Fight” are otherworldly. I’m not sure Geddy Lee, Steve Perry, Steve Walsh or Brad Delp (RIP) could ever reach and hold those notes for so long and with such clarity!

Kansas really doesn't get the credit they deserve. Radio still to this day only plays "Carry on My Wayward Son," "Dust in the Wind," and "Point of No Return." There are so many great songs by these guys! The Monolith album is phenomenal! My all-time favorite song has always been "The Wall." As you mentioned, they had such incredible and thought-provoking lyrics! As a minister who loves rock 'n' roll, they are still favorites to listen to because of those spiritual lyrics. Kerry's A.D. stuff is impressive as well!

I'm an "old fart" and my favorite band is still Kansas. Kerry Livgren is a musical genius, both in his writing & playing. And a Christian brother to boot.

I love Kansas.. always have. Maybe that's why I won 1st Place at a Karaoke Contest (2008) singing none other than.. Kansas' Dust in the Wind! How about a review of that song? Love it :-) Keep up the great stuff, Ken!

Can I at least say this? Love Ken Tamplin for this. In addition, if you ever get to see this performance on UA-cam, check out the very end of this with Kansas" reaction to the Fans. This emotional moment at the end, meant so much to them, it is........nice. Their hometown. Phil Ehart, in tears. Love it.

Joun Elefante was a fantastic singer/songwriter in Many different bands and solo stuff! He still has his pipes and sings great today! Unlike many other singers! I (being a drummer) have also followed Mike Portnoy (drummer/backup singer) originally from Dream Theater and gone to do many other successful projects. The Best Both!!!!!

Thanks for covering this! :-) I LOVE Kansas - I think they're one of the best prog-rock bands that ever was - I put them up there with Genesis, YES, Styx, ELP, etc. It's a pity so few know the full catalogue of their music. One of my favorite LIVE performances you can find here on UA-cam is from 1975 when they performed "The Pinnacle" on the Don Kirshiner show. They were so young but so amazingly talented - of course they still are! Cheers. :-)

Incredible artists with such a tight sound. I was amazed that they could still hit those high notes. The professionalism between the band members just give room to each person to shine in ways that you don't normally see in this day and age. The Supernatural series on the CW was able to introduce me to this great band and they live up to their reputation.
