Steve Walsh (the guy in the shorts and tube socks) has one of the top 5 voices of the 70's and even does hand stands in concert, Robbie Steinhart (other guy singing) was a orchestra trained violinist, the drummer is also one of the top 5 drummers of the 70's as well, Kerry Livgren (blonde guy playing guitar) was the song writer and penned this and Dust in the Wind, the final guy Rich Williams (guy in the tuxedo) is a phenomenal guitarist in his own right and played more than 40 years before missing his first concert date. Yes they are my favorite band. :-)
This was 1978, not 73. This was their 3rd last song in the set. They were tight as hell from the very start! Great video, goes straight to the point, no unnecessary rambling.
Val, 1976. Steve Walsh is the singer and he is great. Check out their song "Journey From Mariabronn" to hear an incredible vocal. Technically, Steve Walsh has an "oo" vowel that cuts like a knife. He is one of my all-time favorite singers.
The lead guitarist w/ the long blond hair, Kerry Livgren, wrote this song & all of the progressive songs. They are one of the best bands ever. The singer is Steve Walsh - one of the finest ever.
Kansas was a back up band for Queen on some of the US tours. I got into them for Dust in the wind being in an episode of the Higlander TV series , and I was watching Highlander because of Queen. Funny old world
With the exception of a few musicians today no one can match the bands of the 70s Kansas will always stand out as true musicians countless hours of practicing on real instruments dedication you do not see today
Actually before college. Some of them knew each other from all the previous unknown garage bands. Phil and Kerry were keeping tabs on each other way before with White Cover Jamming in New Orleans late 60's. White Clover needed Kerry to write and Kansas III finally came together to make what you hear today.
Even in my bar band in the late sixties, early seventies. Three different keyboard players each with their own personal B3. I often felt more like a furniture mover than a guitar player sometimes. -dave
Xenophon that is a blast from the past! I went to school with a bunch of guys that we were all in the drum and bugle corps and these guys were absolutely nuts about cheap trick
Great walk down memory lane. Thank you Valerie. I also grew up listening to this song also along with many others. Never seen the live version. so crazy and fun. So much talent, such interesting fashion choices lol.
I really enjoy your reaction to this video. Pardon me for a small correction. Canada Jam took place in 1978 the song Wayward Son hadn't been written or recorded in 73.
Kansas was and IS amazing. Kerry Livgren Blonde on guitar. Rich Williams 2nd guitar in Tux, Steve Walsh gym shorts multi instruments and lead vocals, Robbie Steinhart violin, tambourine vocals, Dave Hope bass and Phil Eheart ( sp ) on drums. Phil and Rich are still touring with Kansas. The band replaced a few members one at a time. Kerry was the founder and main writer but Steve and Robbie also wrote lyrics and music. This band was HIGHLY UNDERRATED and still is. Most of their music was much more Prog than Rock. Because of this, despite radio hits and sold out concerts to this day, they have been denied a place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. They and Emerson, Lake and Palmer are pretty much blackballed simply because they had talent.
Steve Walsh was SO HOT! I was a little too young to appreciate him and Kansas during this time, but my older sisters were way into them and Steve Walsh was among the many eyes the sister I shared a room with had plastered from floor to ceiling on posters, and I, being very shy and modest (still am) had to get dressed in the closet because all these heart throbs were staring at me! But it only took a couple more years until I discovered how hot this guy was ...and many others😜 Brings back so many memories! And now when I see him...(btw, I know his doppelgänger...married to one of my best friends 🤗😜)...I realize just how talented this guy and the whole band were! Thanks for sharing!
Lorie-Harley Flinchum I hate to break your heart but I dated a guy for four years from about 1997 to 2000 or 2001. He was going to Georgia State and working on his sociology degree and Steve Walsh‘s wife was in college with him!!! Doesn’t that freak you out? She was older but she was working towards a degree in social work, & I guess it was just something that she wanted to do. When my boyfriend at the time told me that, My heart skipped a beat .. that was back in 1997 so it’s been a while.. I just thought that it’s a small World.
Yeah buddy, I was 20 in 76, had 2 older sisters but my youngest sis fell in luv with Walsh when I turned her on to Kansas. I was a fan of theirs long before this song. Lots of estrogen was in my family too...lol!
I see Kansas and I click. 💜 Louder for the people in the back Ms. Valerie! Talent and passion have been exchanged for manufactured hype and a quick paycheck.
This song wasn't even written until 1976, so it can't be a live performance in 1973! It was written by the lead guitarist w/ the long, white blonde hair - Kerry Livgren, known as "the Maestro" because he was such a great songwriter & orchestrator & lyricist. Lead singer - Steve Walsh. The speed up was due to the adrenaline of live performance.
Funny thing, I just saw this performance for the very first time this past week on another reaction channel. But then, while going through your back catalog, I discover that you already did it two years ago!
You just made my day Valerie, maybe one day you and me can go to one of these things, and it would be just awesome to hear what you have to say, and live the dream, Go Girl, many hugs :-) #if only :-( but seriously Valerie, you're totally awesome
Love Kansas! Steve Walsh, what a voice, what timbre. Please, trust me, react to Diamanda Galas, maybe the tune My world is empty without you babe, from the album Malediction and Prayer. Then maybe do Nina Hagen, the song Naturetrane or Smack Jack. No one sings like them, they break the mold.....
Thank you!! I love this band and they were around in the 70s when I was a kid going to elementary school. If you can ever get the time to listen to Evanescence, “ Bring me back to life” please do. I would love to hear your feedback on what you think of the lead singer, AMY LEE. She is absolutely incredible and has this powerhouse voice mixed with an angel. It’s absolutely beautiful and I have loved everything the band has done as well as some of the stuff that she’s done with other artists. Thank you!
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way.😎😎😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other deep songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio.
You really listen to “Little Feat:Spanish Moon from the live album titled”Waitin’forColumbus” their main singerlowell lGeorge passed away.Afterthey reformed with original members front man, Paul Barrare. lead guitar, drum master Richie Hayward, keyboard master Bill Payne Kenny Gradney on bass and Sam Clayton on percussion ND VOCALS ND FROM PURE PRAIRIE Mr.Craig Fuller. Check any or all songs on “Live FromSt.Louis you’ll love it
A high school choir director used to say he thought the studio Album version of MeatLoaf's "for Crying Out Loud" was the best male vocal Rock Song he had ever heard . That was 20+ years ago, but the only song I can think of to challenge that would be Disturb's Sounds of Silence - Valerie could be the first trained vocal Coach to analyze that song on you tube

I saw that tour too. It was a green lazier reflecting giving the stage kind of a "jail cell" appearance. Very cool. That was what I remember about it in 79.
The big guy with big hair is Robby Steinhardt. Too bad he doesn't play the violin on this one. I'd love to hear your reaction to an great live performance from Deep Purple and the amazing voice of lead singer Ian Gillan. Here's the title of the video: Deep Purple Child in Time Live Live 1970 HD Ian was the very first Jesus in the original Jesus Christ Superstar when it first came out as just an album before it was a movie and stage show.
Qthelost I love that lead singer‘s voice!! This song came out in the 1970s. I remember my dad taking our family to see the movie “ Heroes” & this song was the ending soundtrack to the credits. I was about nine years old walking out of the movie theater after watching this movie. It was about the Vietnam war and how the veterans ( The lead actor in particular)!returned back from the war with PTSD and being treated so horribly bad by people, & I was bawling. I couldn’t believe how that movie touched me but really that song was what made me cry. I could’ve held it together had it not been for this song.
Hello Val, you're the prettiest girl I've ever seen with grey hair yet with many of mine I could add way more... lol. I go back a long way even before Way Son. My boss was a southern rocker and invited me over. First song I heard was off of the title track Song For America called Down the Road. That song was all over the place jamming. Kinda like Deep Purple. Then the next song was Song For America. Totally different song. Sounded like Beethoven, Bach, and other composers all incorporated into one very melodic song. My favorite of all time. Their songs are so dynamic and diverse. That was it for me. I had a cassette recorder and asked him if I could borrow it. Then not even a month after, Bad Company was coming with Kansas. It was the first time Bad Co. was in New Orleans but I was in it for Kansas. Bad Co. was good too but Kansas was obviously the premiere band at the time but really was not. They came through the front entrance of the municipal auditorium but I was close to the stage. I heard the crowd roar. I'm looking at the stage. Where are they? A surprise attack from my rear. Don't remember which ones but at least 3 of them are playing bag pipes dressed in kilts proceeding up the main isle slowly. You are right. They didn't have the many songs as now including Wayward Son so the songs were not rushed and not the best performance that they are capable of that you saw. They got up on stage and NAILED all of it. The crowd at the auditorium went crazy. Backing up bands were no more when Leftoverature was out. I knew it was Kansas when I first heard the vocals on WWS back when they had good radio stations. I can on and on about them but have a thesis already. Kerry Livgren, the blonde hair was the main writer guitarist and keys, Phil Ehart drummer, Robbie Steinhardt violin and vocals. Steve Walsh soprano vocals and keys, bongos. Rich Williams acoustic and lead guitars. Dave Hope on bass.
The song wasn't even written until 1976! So it couldn't have been performed in 1973. In fact their first album wasn't released until 1974. The album Leftoverture, which contained this song was released in 76.
Can you react to a great, modern progressive rock band from Poland, called 'Riverside'. Great musicians, sound great live and on studio recordings. Great vocalist.
Actually the main keyboard Steve Walsh played was a Hammond B3 organ - very widely available to the public. Livgren, on the other hand, played some of the harder to get (for then) keyboards including the mini-Moog. Oh, and lest we forget just hopped up on cocaine Walsh was at this point, causing the manic frenzy in his performances like the handstands and kickjumps on the keyboard.
Pleasse! React to André Matos voice on the music Fairy Tale, from band Shaman. He just recently passed away and it was very shocking for us brazilians, he was our metal proud, SO talented =[
That stuff is still around. Here is a bunch of session musicians, including the singer doing a cover live: ua-cam.com/video/dyQD5dyo_6U/v-deo.html Here is Beth Hart with her own band and music: ua-cam.com/video/lzdJf7Hqttk/v-deo.html
I think you are spot on when it comes to their tightness, professionalism and performance. That is spot on! And, as you say, there are few, if any, bands that can equal the talent of the 70's and 80's, and even early 90's. Since then, things have gone to hell. But I get a feeling, mostly with very young artists, that there may be a renaissance. I truly hope so...
Steve Walsh was perfect. The whole band was, frankly. Not just the performances, but the writing and arrangements and the overall inspiration. (I am a classical pianist, but I enjoy great performances...).
Got ya a big ole dose of Stevie (Steve Walsh). If you are attractive enough, it really doesn't matter what you wear. In any time period. The very best looking women, by a long shot, are always at the hard rock shows. Still today. Stevie had a haram. lol Great choice of a performance.
This song wasn't even written until 1976 and released later that year on their masterpiece album LEFTOVERTURE. And you entirely missed the Acapella intro that is emblematic of the song. Please listen to their other 70s albums - they are America's finest progressive rock band.
Sounds like the studio?....no....LIFE LONG kansas fan...that was live..this was not the studio recording..dont get me wrong..still loved it. Look them up on Don Kirshners Rock Concert...much more refined. BTW this is a song that most Kansas fans would skip for MUCH better Kansas tunes.
Well.... I donno if it was released but their first album was actually in 1970. Wikipedia has the history but Kerry (writer) was trying to get Kansas formed since then. He kept tabs with Phil. White Clover had many members of the Kansas who were a group playing in New Orleans gigs. Interesting history how they got "Kansas III" together. Kansas 1 and 2 failed and White Clover needed a writer. They recruited Kerry and added Robbie the violinist. He didn't want a psychedelic band name and changed it to the Kansas 3 as you know today. He took the last part of one of the 1970 album songs and incorporated it into The Wall on Leftoverature.
Perhaps a little heavy on the Columbian marching powder ,eh ,Steve ? Sweating like it's game 7 of the NBA finals at Boston Garden with no A.C.. It ain't that hot in Canada
Steve Walsh was probably dressed like he was because, as you could tell, he was sweating like crazy and it was most likely both cooler for him and less laundry, certainly not fashion.
I would suggest you take time out to listen to RUSH - only one vocalist - Geddy Lee (Bass player), together with his two colleagues - Neil Peart (Drummer/percussionist), & Alex Lifeson - Guitars......if you want "tight", then look no further; & it's true to your assertion - these individuals were professionals - no glamour or glitz, just pure, unadulterated, & conscientous focus on their performance...hell, autotune wasn't even a glimmer in the eye of the music corporations then (thankfully). In truth, I wouldn't give you tuppence for today's modern contemporaries - or possibly a small handful...the rest are just dross...it was ever thus. Stay safe & well, Valerie - your name eponymous to the excellent Steve Winwood, who penned that song ;D
Thought the same. If I had a voice like that I would not be snorting lines. His conga part is very simple he's making it look hard.......and to the teacher they are not bongos. Bongos are small and you can place them between your legs.
Steve Walsh...he has to be the most underrated singer in rock...hes got so many better vocal performances than this... good start though..thanks!!!..all the world...should be next
Alan Hembra You forgot one player. Rev Dave Hope (Bass). He holds it all together!
Yep! They were dynamite in concert. I saw them Labor Day weekend 1996 (with Styx) and he was STILL doing handstands, lol!
My second favorite. No mention of Dave Hope and Phil Ehart?
Smokin! Dave Hope. That’s how they introduced him!
Check out White Clover. Many of the Kansas personnel playing in New Orleans gigs the late 60's .
This was 1978, not 73. This was their 3rd last song in the set. They were tight as hell from the very start! Great video, goes straight to the point, no unnecessary rambling.
This show was recorded for some of the songs that went on the double live album Two for the Show.
You can never go wrong playing one of the two Steve’s live. Steven Walsh from Kansas and Steve Perry from Journey
Val, 1976. Steve Walsh is the singer and he is great. Check out their song "Journey From Mariabronn" to hear an incredible vocal. Technically, Steve Walsh has an "oo" vowel that cuts like a knife. He is one of my all-time favorite singers.
They were and are one of the best live bands you will ever see. Epic...majestic.... They never disappoint. Classic song, written by Kerry Livgrin..
Kansas was one of my favorite bands and this song is one of my favorites of theirs.
DO YOU SEE WHY WE LOVED ROCK AND ROLL SOOOOOO MUCH...LOOK AT THESE GUYS...MAKES ME SMILE.
The lead guitarist w/ the long blond hair, Kerry Livgren, wrote this song & all of the progressive songs.
They are one of the best bands ever. The singer is Steve Walsh - one of the finest ever.

Great nostalgic performance, fun to watch, and good commentary. Say what you want. They were working very hard to please their audience. Thank You!
Violin player’s father is a music professor. A few of them met in college. They are a great band to see live!
That makes sense! They're so tight!
Actually before college. Some of them knew each other from all the previous unknown garage bands. Phil and Kerry were keeping tabs on each other way before with White Cover Jamming in New Orleans late 60's. White Clover needed Kerry to write and Kansas III finally came together to make what you hear today.
May I say I’ve seen this incarnation of Kansas 13x! No better live band than Kansas!
Steve is an animal ! Amazing ! All the great bands from the 70s had a Hammond B3 player. Kansas, Boston, Foreigner, Journey, Deep Purple etc..
Even in my bar band in the late sixties, early seventies. Three different keyboard players each with their own personal B3. I often felt more like a furniture mover than a guitar player sometimes.

Man, Steve can sing! Jeez, Louise.
I saw them live in, I believe, 1978 in Germany. Cheap Trick opened for them, speaking of another blast from the past.
RIP Robby Steinhardt (July 2021). Will miss your beautiful sounds of violin and tambourine.
I really enjoy your reaction to this video. Pardon me for a small correction. Canada Jam took place in 1978 the song Wayward Son hadn't been written or recorded in 73.
"None can equal the SPLENDOR!"
You must have loved that lyric. 😊
Splendor! ✨
Thank you, Valerie! That brought back some good memories.
Kansas is a very underappreciated group that was a great addition to the prog rock scene.
not by me!
Kansas was and IS amazing. Kerry Livgren Blonde on guitar. I saw Kansas live in late 70s, probably the clearest and cleanest concert ever.
Me, too. 1978 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Thin Lizzy and The Cars opened up for them. Awesome concert. Clear and clean, like you say.
At around 4:40, singer/violin player throws his tambourine to a stage hand (off camera) and smiles as it is caught.
Great reaction! My favorite version of this song is Live Santa Monica CA 14/1-1977. Masterpiece!
This is from Canada Jam 8/26/78.
That was a Hammond B-3. Almost impossible to find now. Incredibly expensive.
A reaction to Cher would be lovely :)
You should check out Firefall Strange way
Will you try up Deep Purple-Child in Time- 1970
Got ya a big ole dose of Stevie (Steve Walsh). If you are attractive enough, it really doesn't matter what you wear. In any time period. The very best looking women, by a long shot, are always at the hard rock shows. Still today. Stevie had a haram. lol Great choice of a performance.
Rich was wearing blue geans overalls in a Don Kirchner video and not a tux.
That date 1973 has got to be wrong cause it was recorded 1975 and released 1976😊👍👌👍😊💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
YES, 1976
This song wasn't even written until 1976 and released later that year on their masterpiece album LEFTOVERTURE. And you entirely missed the Acapella intro that is emblematic of the song. Please listen to their other 70s albums - they are America's finest progressive rock band.
Do Reaction to Journey with Steve Perry. Who's Crying Now, Faithfully,Open Arms, Stone In Love.
SIMPLESMENTE DO CARALHO. KANSAS AO VIVO É MELHOR AINDA.
"Spirit", doing " I got a line on you". Thanks..... great reaction of Kansas. The Keyboardist, is Steve Walsh and has great powerful voice.
This isn’t 1973. This song wasn’t written until 1976. This performance is probably from around 1976-1980.
Do It’s now are never & Are you lonesome tonight By Elvis
The song is from 1976, not 1973
Ummmm.....1973? Kansas didn't release their first album until 1974, and this was off Leftoverture, their FOURTH album and in 1976.
And NO AUTOTUNE!!!
Perhaps a little heavy on the Columbian marching powder ,eh ,Steve ? Sweating like it's game 7 of the NBA finals at Boston Garden with no A.C.. It ain't that hot in Canada
Carry On My Cocained Son
React to RINI's album "after the sun"
They had lots of cocaine back in those days.
Walsh was fueled by cocaine. Made for a great show, however!
Thought the same. If I had a voice like that I would not be snorting lines. His conga part is very simple he's making it look hard.......and to the teacher they are not bongos. Bongos are small and you can place them between your legs.
Coke is a hella of a drug 😁
The band was clean bro - none of them did drugs. Get ur head out of ur ass
Steve Walsh...he has to be the most underrated singer in rock...hes got so many better vocal performances than this... good start though..thanks!!!..all the world...should be next
Cocained Rambo .-.
Back when you had to have skill and could be a mater musician as compared to whatever this crap is toy.
