I've never used auto-tune on my vocals. I would NEVER use it live, but I can see how it could be useful in the studio. Say you nail a very emotional part & it's all perfect, but one syllable is a little flat. Correct that one syllable & keep the intensity of the take. Relying on auto-tune is just covering up a lack of talent. I don't like that at all.
There is a young singer who a lot of people haven't heard because she doesn't sing pop and she doesn't use auto-tune. It's Jackie Evancho. She's had an absolutely beautiful voice since she exploded on the scene in 2010 at the age of 10. She began as a classical singer and has now branched out into a little pop but also Broadway music.
Jessie J is seriously underrated, especially compared to some singers who seemed to blow up. Yes they have talent but she’s just another at a whole other level compared to a lot of them. Not even a fan of hers but I’ve heard some of her live stuff and holy crap she’s got it.
Processing includes many things (EQ, compression, delay, verb, pitch correction aka auto tune etc). Processing is perfectly fine as long as Pitch correction is not used. Auto tune is NEVER necessary and should be abolished entirely. All it does is make the music boring and less enjoyable to Listen to. It’s become a crutch.

IMO, if autotune is only used for effect and the person can actually sing well without it, like Cher’s Believe (first major example of autotune), then it’s fine. But if you rely on autotune in the studio, and in live performances you sound terrible or at least less than up to par, then I’m not about that. I find it lazy when people use autotune in the studio to cover up for why they have terrible live performances.

Ive been an engineer, studio musician, and producer for almost 2 decades and hate auto tune/ melodyne as a crutch for people that don't have the vocal talent but are highly marketable in every other way and is the sole reason they even exist as huge forces in music sucking up spots/lanes that would otherwise be open for true talent. These things are meant to be tools for someone like me to make minor fixes in otherwise amazing takes and it's being grossly abused. I get it's use as an effect meaning it's sound is part of what we're deliberately going for in a part of a song but even then there are other tools i prefer that do a much better job of getting that effect but the artist (usually very young) wants it to be the same sound everyone else has in their songs not realizing you have to be somewhat original/your own thing if you want to achieve that level you're actually trying to reach.

I make a difference between auto tune and vocal tune. To me (and I am not the only one I think) auto tune is a pitch correction that should not be detected by human ear and sounds completely natural, in order to correct out of tune vocals. Vocal tune is the "modern" effect (too much) used by young singers and rappers on french and english songs which adds a synthetic sound to the voice, an effect derived from vocoder but different first used in the song Believe by Cher then by Daft Punk One More Time. Sometimes Vocal tune is created using Antares Autotune or using synthesizers functionalities. I call it in french "le dopage des jeunes chanteurs" ! Both sometimes can be made with the same software but the first one is only a pitch correction while the second one is an effect and a fashion... that most people aged more than 30 do not like except in a very few songs !

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy then, Lucas!
I do! And it’s also nice to have a look into the life of a musician in a simple, real way rather than an overproduced documentary. Your work is the best
You're very charismatic Ken. I could listen to your analysis and stories for hours. Also it shows that you're a sensitive guy. I appreciate it. Keep up the good content man ;)
Jarbas from Paris 🤘
Thanks, Jarbas!
Yeah the Bieber parts most def sound auto-tuned, or with a lot of processing at least (you can hear a glimpse of those processed harmonics). Gotta say, one of the best things about your reactions are your stories, I at least find them really interesting and funny. Keep it up Ken, keep doing your thing!!
The embarrassing story tho LOL!!!!!! Made my day, I laughed so hard.
Haha best reaction video ! I like all the backstories from way back as well ! Hilarious xD

I love your stories bro (: talking like I'm really there with ya :D
Thanks for the awsome entertainment Ken 😃
Very amusing story Ken, I could just picture the scene of you walking back to the audience, When did autotune become available dont think they had that in the eighties.
Vocality 1998. "Believe". Cher. She used it first.
Mr Ken please help me, i have questions and i hope you can answer it.
Sound live or studios like cracks or intentional break for examples like Sia did, is she using autotune? just because she usually did it at the same time and notes in her songs at many live occasions.
I'm really curious.
Thank you.
The queen of audio 🎶 tune 😂 thank you ken!
A video of a couple of Ken Tamplin stories would be pretty cool; it may even help recruit some students because it breaks down the teacher/student barrier. Awesome commentary, man, and I laughed dang hard, too.
Hi Ken, great video as always! The guitarist playing Yesterday with Katy Perry was Steve Lukather himself :)
