Interesting! I've never heard that before about dropping your head voice too low and losing your voice over time. Maybe that's why so many of the 80's screamers have lost their screams? Check Eric Adams from Manowar. He always seemed to drive a lot of chest into his screams and his screams are still powerful even into his 60's. I think you're onto something!
There are still vocal coaches teaching early bridging. You need to learn to grow your chest voice and rely on that for what many are using head voice for. Early bridging is a fast track to losing your singing voice. Sometimes early bridging is fine for effect, but not as the go-to foundation for your voice. It will wear out and is not up to the challenge. It's a weak foundation.
@@kentamplin So then how do you explain singers who use Geoff's technique and don't have this issue some 30 years later? Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Michael Kiske (Helloween, singing with Avantasia a lot recently), even Geoff (who also happens to be singing with Avantasia right now) still can do it. I know it's easy to say "They aren't as good as they used to be" but they ARE still singing their songs and don't have to drop the tuning or anything like that.
listen to Arch/Matheos Winter Ethreal (Vermillion Moons/Tethered/Kindred Spirits), that album is crazy with vocals it just came out this past month. it's crazy.
Queensryche sounded so different than other bands when that EP came out. Geoff Tate's voice is very distinctive with range and power. You always knew he was singing. Thanks Ken!
Queensryche sounded so unique for so long that when I first heard Dream Theater on the radio at the beach I thought "Is this a new Queensryche tune? I thought they broke up!"
Tate, Dickerson, Halford, and Dio were great singers but in my opinion, there’s no one like Mr. Kiske.... and he still sings the same key and range he did in the 80’s as he does today.... maybe even has a better sounding voice now

I really like the fact that Geoff has both crazy high notes and beautiful and warm baritonal low notes at the same time (for example in silent lucidity or killing words); that makes his voice extremely versatile and unique in my opinion
That is something that many vocal coaches talk about with Geoff, which may be another difference between he and another phenomenal singer, John Arch from Fates Warning. John could match Geoff on high notes and could do a decent baritone (Damnation from Night on Brocken), but it was not as deeply resonant as what Geoff’s.

Yep. Saw him in NJ a couple weeks ago. It was so much better than I thought it would be. His band has tightened and Tate keeps finding more of his old vocal capability. Not sure if he could pull off Queen of the Reich or Take Hold of the Flame (in the original register) these days, but it seems he finds a way to get through the tunes, sometimes going to a lower octave or modifying the vocal so he can perform it without leaving you missing too much (like before). Having said that, he can still belt out some powerful vocals at times! I know he went through some rough years, but it seems he's got a good portion of the mojo back. Oh, if we could only to see the original band united once again, before they're all really too old to do it...it is a dream, I have.
I was lucky enough to hear Take Hold of the Flame live, somewhere in the 80's. I'll never forget that. Tate blew me right out of my socks. I've seen hundreds of bands after that, and many with really powerful singers, but none of them was, in my opinion, as fantastic as Geoff Tate.

I know the show must go on, but Queensryche without Geoff Tate and Chris DeGarmo is not Qeensryche for me. Without those guys the magic is gone. I am so glad to have seen the Operation Live Crime tour.
Man.......the only live Queensryche I ever got to see was Operation: Livecrime. Still absolutely captivating even on video. Whenever I watch it.......feels like I enter another world.......I literally get wrapped up in it, like I'm part of the story.
Spot on. It’s like Van Halen without Eddie or Alex. No thanks. Those guys should just call a truce and get back together. It’s a shame attitudes and egos tear such great things apart.

Dewayne Marion Couldn’t get into Rage For Order. I tried really hard, too. I’ve even revisited it many times over the years but to no avail. The best thing about it was that it totally set up Operation: Mindcrime for me! 😉
Another great video. Very educational! What a range geoff had - he could sustain those notes for a long time. You kicked ass too Ken singing along- cold in the studio!
David Kyle is a maestro Ken. I believe he also trained Anne Wilson, Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. I remember where I was the first time I heard Queensryche. My friends and I were at a great party and the owner only played his Queensryche cds. This was mid 80's for us. Geoff's voice immediately caught my attention. The Killing Words, OMG! I always thought Geoff had a opera voice. Wish he took care of it. 😒 Rage & Crime Time are my favorite lp's. Thankyou Ken. Loving your channel. 💜
This is my favourite queensryche song and favourite performance of that song. Big thank you to Ken for reviewing it and making sense of all the intricacies of the vocals. And also a huge thanks to Ken for being so honest about the techniques and measures for singing in this style. It's hugely tough! Ken = legend
I saw his solo project live last weekend, still has a killer voice. and man, did i get excited when one of my house-gods comes to town, not even the biggest club in the biggest city here in sweden, but still was a killer show with heavy preassure from the crowd, it was amazing.
im getting tons of reacts to Queensryche lately and you are the ONLY dude who can sing like the guys you analyse. I watched a few pretty poor analysis lately of Geoff Tate - and im not really a singer. Ive learned a lot from watching you over the years Ken. I know with the rate you produce these videos it must be very draining for you, but I for one appreciate you passing on your knowledge. You are the only one to ever really explain head voice and chest voice so even I can see the mistakes some 'vocal coaches' are making in their analysis - its all backed up by listening to these guys in recent years and hearing how their voices have changed. One thing I always admire with some of the Queensryche live performances is that Chris DeGarmo could harmonise on some of the high stuff very well.
Ken hearing you hit those notes so effortlessly just blew my mind. It's no wonder you are the leading vocal coach on the internet,(in the real world too). The proof really is in the singing! I've been using your course for about a year and I'm loving it. I'm making steady progress and gaining confidence daily. I've gained enough confidence to start leading worship at church! Thank you for all you do and thank you for "reacting" to my favorite band! God Bless! P.s. I ordered some of your albums , wake the nation's, and Tamplin and friends, and man I'm diggin' them!!!!! Story of love is my new favorite jam, just killer!
This one was long overdue Ken. Geoff Tate was the master at this time. Nobody at this time was performing live vocals at this time like this and let's face it they have not since. Geoff Tate and Queensryche were miles ahead of everyone. Spot on reaction brother. I love how you just start screaming along like its nothing.LMAO. your the master brother.
It's refreshing to hear a vocal coach say good things about my favorite music. It's obvious you really like Queensryche and Mindcrime. You have an awesome voice, too. Horns up 🤘🤘
One of my absolute favorite singers! If you haven't heard the version of Scarborough Fair, give it a listen. His vocals on that song are absolutely amazing.
Cool Critique Ken as always! 👍😎🎤🎵🎶 Geoff & Queensryche were operation "mind blown" for sure when operation mind crime came out! 🤟😄 All supertalented musicians! I respect what you're saying about the head voice and the amazing thing is that Geoff Tate can STILL SING as well as he did back then! He's one of the lucky ones! 😂 lol! Any I keep on rockin Ken! God bless Brutha! 🤟😎🥁💞
Checkout Crimson Glory too.. Azrael is nice song to kick off with. Also, if you haven't checked out Arch/Matheos do yourself a favour and listen to Midnight serenade
LOVE me some Queensryche. I remember listening to Christian Metal bands like Sacred Warrior that sounded so much like Queensryche at the time. Rey Parra was / is a vocal doppleganger for Geoff Tate. Even Jimmy P. Brown II from Deliverance has a somewhat similar vocal style. I played Sacred Warrior all the time on my old Christian Metal Radio show The Masters Majestic Metal way back in the early - mid 90's in Tallahassee. Great times.
I remember my brother buying the Queensryche ep back when it came out and we just sat there in awe. I was only 10 or 11 at the time and I knew right then I wanted to sing for the rest of my life. I'm 45 now. Operation Mindcrime was a staple in my cassette player when I was a teenager. It was incredible as was Rage for Order.
See this right here is exactly why I love Ken...such enthusiasm and genuine love for great music at the same time of course as being a damn musical genius.
Queensryche are absolute godz. Creative, brilliant musicians with Geoff who is without a doubt one of the greatest vocalists in metal/rock history. Still gives me chills every single time.
Another vocalist named Don Dokken also studied under this Maestro Kyle guy and suffered the same fate: a short but amazing peak and a huge downfall afterwards. Geoff didn’t suffer as badly as Don, but by 30 years old or so, Geoff abandoned this unusual technique. Thank you for explaining this, Ken!
They in the early mid 80s had one of best sound engineers in metal history. Neil Kerron RAGE FOR ORDER and Dokken's Tooth and nail. Also many other style of music. Very focused on bring out the best in singers and recording techniques.
The concert I saw back in the day when they did just operation mindcrime from beginning to end was amazing, till this day there is no better concept album than that
It would be cool. But like La Torre, Geoff would probably sound better and that's not a knock. Hitting the notes is only half the battle. There's the personalization (sp?) some singers have unique to them and Geoff probably emoted better than any metal singer outside of maybe Dio.
Absolutely love this song. My dad used to sing like that in the 90s in his band Manta Ray, and was inspired by bands like Queensryche, TNT, and Crimson Glory. My favorite song my dad made back in the day is called Lords Of Atlantis. It’s really good, and you can find it here on UA-cam. Anyways, such a great video and song. 🤟🏻👍🏻
kpopcoffeebeans, Thanks for that. I found a link to their 4 demos. Until Tomorrow rocks! They sound like Ryche + Maiden + Scorpions. Do you have any of the original pressings?
I bought Operation Mindcrime on its release and still listen to it this day. It really is a masterpiece. Also had the pleasure of seeing them live in their heyday. Tate was a spectacular vocalist in his day and so unique. If anything their music has gotten better with time.
Ahhhhh those were the days ...Of all the concerts ive been to which is an ass load ....Queensryche Mindcrime tour was one of the best shows ive seen to date
I had the chance to see all 3 shows at Long Beach Arena during the Empire tour where they did Operation: Mindcrime in it's entirety. Such a brilliant band & performance.
Geoff could sing (exactly) this song perfectly fine late last year. So... And this song is from the EP with the same name as this song. After this they released "Warning" and "Rage for Order" before "OM".
Ken, you make me want to go find my old Tamplin albums and convert them to digital so I can listen to them again. Listening to you sing takes me back to my late teens and early twenties. I loved your music!
Been away with some health issues, but damn you have such range and its so smooth! An Queensryche definitely works and the backup vocals have such great harmony. Love your reviews. And after being sick it's so great to get back to yer stuff. ROCK ON BROTHER!!!
Small club in Baltimore MD .. Five bucks at the door .. 1984 .. Queensryche !!! .. .. Perfect place to sit . A few feet above on the side .. An overlook . .. Queensryche was my band that night !!! .. All the members fist pumping me and shaking sticks . smiling . and during the lead of Take Hold .. Geoff climbed up and stayed with me the whole time .. Shaking my hand furiously .. .. That was the best performance I have ever heard . I was witnessing history . .. They played every song that night from the EP . The Warning and one other song The Prophecy .. Geoff never missed a note and the band was .. Tight !!!!.. I only have it in my memory now .. ..
Fantastic analysis again Ken. I believe Queen of the Reich is actually from their self-titled EP, which I think came out 83. Mindcrime was a few years later. Thought I'd point that out, since someone else would have anyway. Keep rocking!
EP The Warning Rage For Order Mindcrime Empire Promised Land. (Then, various albums I don’t own, due to De Garmo leaving, and the change in overall sound.) This is indeed from the EP, along with The Lady Wore Black.
I'm traveling through Ethiopia, on the way back from a month in Kenya on missionary work. No time or fast enough wifi but seeing this song makes me very happy. Here's a thumbs up from me......even through I can't watch it yet.
@@kentamplin Thanks! I made it back safe and finally got a chance to watch the video. Excellent as always! My old band got to hang out with Queensryche a few times in the late 90's and almost got to open for them for a tour but things deteriorated in my band right before we got the deal inked. Super nice guys. However, Geoff had definitely lost a lot of his voice at that time. Seeing them again with Todd singing brings back the glory days for me. I'd love to see you do a comparison video of Geoff and Todd. Similarities and differences.
wow ilove geoff hes one of best singers ever, when i listen to their old stuff along with halford, kiske etc i shake my head to most of his singing skills and power.
I've always loved Tate, and I've always thought that this song showed off his incredible range absolutely the best. This was like a perfectly sung song (if that makes sense). And this version of QR was absolutely killer! I'm not going to comment on the Todd LaTorre version of QR, or if Tate has lost his voice, I'm just going to enjoy QR and Tate when they were at their best. And you are correct, Operation Mindcrime was amazing. And finally, Chris DeGarmo was a wonderful Lead Guitarist.
I agree with everything you said, except that Take Hold of the Flame showed more of his range, as he did much more in a baritone register at the beginning of that song. On Queen of the Reich, he started high and stayed there. That is impressive, as well, but that massive octave shift at the beginning of Take Hold of the Flame wowed me from the first second that I heard it. It still does, and a bunch of vocal coaches on UA-cam agree. I have seen 11 different reactions to the song with 7 or 8 being vocal coaches. You should see the reactions. I think stunned amazement best describes it. No doubt, though, Tate and Queensryche are amazing on any song.
Why doesn't anyone react to the best Queensryche song "Warning"? It was truly something special to be a teen metalhead during the 80's, no processed, autotuned, beat detected, gridded quantization just pure talent.
This band is just incredible... have all their records on my wall even the original LP! They are outstanding in every way possible!! Great video btw!! You got some killer vocals as well!! Keep up the great work!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Mine too. Though Geoff was surprised when i told him that, after a concert when he asked me. But i couldnt lie 😈not even to him 😀
Warning and rage for order. Simply incredible.
Dewayne Marion Couldn’t get into Rage For Order. I tried really hard, too. I’ve even revisited it many times over the years but to no avail. The best thing about it was that it totally set up Operation: Mindcrime for me! 😉
@@dwaynemeroin3101 you read my.mind
Ken you damn ROCK yourself with your awesome vocals, I love your music, energy and singing as well. YOU ARE A ROCK STAR😊
Love the music, the drums and guitar are awesome, they sound like bloodgood
Addicted to his voice!♥️☺️
I was jamming Queensryche and quiet riot all the time back in 1987😲
Another great video.
Rage & Crime Time are my favorite lp's.
Thankyou Ken. Loving your channel. 💜
See you enjoying this inspires me comradeship. At their peak, Queensryche were unsurpassable.
I wish you were Don’s and Geoff’s vocal coaches , could have preserved two of my favorite singers voices.
But then Geoff wouldn't sound the same :(
This is my favourite queensryche song and favourite performance of that song.
😊
What a voice, what a band!! The energy is so contagious!!
Been waiting for this! One of my lifetime bands!
They are awesome, Rodolfo!
im getting tons of reacts to Queensryche lately and you are the ONLY dude who can sing like the guys you analyse.
Thanks for that! I really appreciate it! Rock on!
Op:Midcrime needs to be listened to as a whole. It is a concept album, a story from beginning to end.
Really true.
But this song is from the EP in 1984 and not from the
Operation Mindcrime
Yup! One of the greatest rock operas ever written in my humble opinion......
His voice captivates my ears. The fact you can do it is just amazing.
Thanks for listening!
The first time I heard Geoff Tate sing I was so blown away I vowed never to sing in the shower again.. lol. Absolutely mind blowing.
Tim Chissom That is so awesome! I'm really happy to hear that! Keep up the great work!
Bill Wren 👍👍👍
It's refreshing to hear a vocal coach say good things about my favorite music. It's obvious you really like Queensryche and Mindcrime. You have an awesome voice, too. Horns up 🤘🤘
Operation Mindcrime is a fantastic album! Way ahead of its time.
About time, Ken...about time. I would love to hear you tackle "Take Hold of the Flame" and "Neue Regal" as well. Best singer in the genre!
Yes, Take Hold of the Flame from the same concert!
Pale Rider, I wanted to suggest “Neue Regel,” but couldn’t remember how to spell it. It’s overlooked, and one of their best.
Road to madness , treats u with many vocal ranges
Wow! Geoff is amazing! You have led me to another band to explore, and you haven't steered me wrong yet! Thank you so much!
Spiral Flash Awesome!
Checkout Crimson Glory too.. Azrael is nice song to kick off with. Also, if you haven't checked out Arch/Matheos do yourself a favour and listen to Midnight serenade
Awesome reaction video ken!!🤘Queensryche🤘
KEN TAMPLIN
YOU ARE AWESOME!
KEEP IT UP! HAVE A EXCELLENT WEEKEND!
ROCKETJEFF Matejek You too!
See this right here is exactly why I love Ken...such enthusiasm and genuine love for great music at the same time of course as being a damn musical genius.
😊
RAGE FOR ORDER was the "bomb" Geoff and the acoustics was mind numbing. Best ever
I really love the joy in Ken's face during this one!
Edward MacKenzie - 😃😃😃
I love that song! As always, you destroy with good Info and showing the technics, you are the best in this business.
Queensryche are absolute godz. Creative, brilliant musicians with Geoff who is without a doubt one of the greatest vocalists in metal/rock history. Still gives me chills every single time.
They're awesome, Andrew!
You are welcome, Parkway Pro!
They in the early mid 80s had one of best sound engineers in metal history. Neil Kerron RAGE FOR ORDER and Dokken's Tooth and nail. Also many other style of music. Very focused on bring out the best in singers and recording techniques.
The concert I saw back in the day when they did just operation mindcrime from beginning to end was amazing, till this day there is no better concept album than that
Absolutely love Queensryche. Underrated band IMHO. I only found out about them after listening to Geoff Tate singing on Hear n Aid.
#RevolutionCalling
If its not obvious, QR is my favorite of all time.
:) Same, without a doubt!
Me too, however have been disappointed since Promised Land. That being said, GT's new project, Sweet Oblivion, is FUEGO!
Ken, sounds like you have the voice to sing Queensrÿche songs. Would love to see you cover them one day 🤘🏻
It would be cool. But like La Torre, Geoff would probably sound better and that's not a knock. Hitting the notes is only half the battle. There's the personalization (sp?) some singers have unique to them and Geoff probably emoted better than any metal singer outside of maybe Dio.
YES ... YES !!! YES!!!
DO IT FER JOHNNY!!
RAHHHHHH😜😜😜😜
Took me 3 years to get to this video but glad you covered this. Queensryche are one of my all time favorite bands.
great song, your father is great!
kpopcoffeebeans,
Thanks for that. I found a link to their 4 demos. Until Tomorrow rocks!
They sound like Ryche + Maiden + Scorpions. Do you have any of the original pressings?
Looking for it ! Can’t find it! Can u attach link! ?
WOW!!! Crimson Glory...Midnight🎶🥰🎶
TNT. I remember them:::: 🤘🏻
I bought Operation Mindcrime on its release and still listen to it this day. It really is a masterpiece. Also had the pleasure of seeing them live in their heyday. Tate was a spectacular vocalist in his day and so unique. If anything their music has gotten better with time.
Adrian Dooley 👍👍👍
Ahhhhh those were the days ...Of all the concerts ive been to which is an ass load ....Queensryche Mindcrime tour was one of the best shows ive seen to date
best live show i've ever been to! Operation Mindcrime.
Make a video analysing the unique voice of Blackie Lawless (Wasp)
Fuck yes!!! I second that!!!
Dude could sing a hell of a ballad too. Wouldn't have expected that from him.
🙌🏼
I don't think Blackie was a hell of a singer but he was good enough. He was a very good performer indeed tho.
@@DarkEmoSophia agreed. Great songwriter for sure.
I had the chance to see all 3 shows at Long Beach Arena during the Empire tour where they did Operation: Mindcrime in it's entirety. Such a brilliant band & performance.
Geoff Tate’s voice is still amazing
I love your enthusiasm for this band, I really loved them back in the day, and didn't know how many others loved them as well!
Rock on!
Thanks for the kind words, Kevin!
I only have it in my memory now .. ..
Awesome! 👍
Fantastic analysis again Ken. I believe Queen of the Reich is actually from their self-titled EP, which I think came out 83. Mindcrime was a few years later. Thought I'd point that out, since someone else would have anyway. Keep rocking!
EP
The Warning
Rage For Order
Mindcrime
Empire
Promised Land.
(Then, various albums I don’t own, due to De Garmo leaving, and the change in overall sound.)
This is indeed from the EP, along with The Lady Wore Black.
I'm traveling through Ethiopia, on the way back from a month in Kenya on missionary work. No time or fast enough wifi but seeing this song makes me very happy. Here's a thumbs up from me......even through I can't watch it yet.
Metalbass79 - Be safe on your journey!
@@Metalbass1979 - Thanks for the suggestion!
Not enough praise for 80s Tate out there
Love the work you do btw!
Simply the best!!!!
wow ilove geoff hes one of best singers ever, when i listen to their old stuff along with halford, kiske etc i shake my head to most of his singing skills and power.
MadWizard89 Yes, Geoff is amazing!
Awesome! Thank you for explaining Tate's vocal technique and for answering what happened to his voice over time.
You're welcome, Julie!
Thank you. I also love this song, and your explaining of how to take good care of our voices
You're welcome, ANISTAZI!
Why doesn't anyone react to the best Queensryche song "Warning"? It was truly something special to be a teen metalhead during the 80's, no processed, autotuned, beat detected, gridded quantization just pure talent.
Im guessing because most of us don't think that that's their best song?.. I know it isn't one of mine but then again there are so many to choose from.
This band is just incredible... have all their records on my wall even the original LP! They are outstanding in every way possible!! Great video btw!! You got some killer vocals as well!! Keep up the great work!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks, Tan Tan!
