I had a similar experience. I was surprised being told I would be using a higher dosage inhaler for my reactive lungs every day for the rest of my life. Haven’t used it in months now. Evidently I was so inflamed and retaining so many fluids the default previously was drowning. Amazing.

Excellent video Dr Cywes. I want to challenge one mechanistic point you make at 8:30. I know it's tempting to suggest that carbs loosen the LES and lots of published manometry data seem to support that the LES is weakened or relaxing during reflux events. I proposed a different theory in my books Heartburn Cured and Fast Tract Digestion Heartburn. I present the evidence that the problem is carbohydrate malabsorption leading to the overgrowth of gas-producing microbes in the gut. The pressure builds up in the intestines, but also in the stomach (higher intragastric pressure in GERD patients is documented in the literature). This pressure drives reflux pushing stomach contents into the esophagus (this also explains the manometry data - pushing the LES open, instead of it weakening or relaxing). Based on this idea both cutting carbs but also addressing causes of malabsorption such as pancreatic or brush border enzyme deficiency and many other possible underlying causes are both expected to reduce heartburn symptoms.

It is on hiatus, though. I was Carnivore for 2 years and on and off for 4 years before that. I am. Ow doing keto. Mostly use Diet Doctor for that. It took me two months and the. Another 6 months to get complete results for everything. It is worth it to at least go full on keto. I will never look back. There is now too much research on how this helps. I had no symptoms for many years, then in the last six months severe stress brought it back, not too bad though until I started carnivore. Great explanation on how the esophagial sphincter functions. How about dysautonomia? Vagus nerve becoming compromised due to acetylcholine downregulation in the brain stem that controls the parasympathetic nervous system. Possible B1 thiamine deficiency. Simple safe solution everyone can try first. Carbs, prescription drugs, diuretics are known to deplete vitamin stores in the blood. There is too much dogma in the carnivore keto lowcarb community about supplementation. Most supplements are junk unfortunately so I do understand why many people feel this way about them. I follow carnivore myself but GERD is a good example where temporary supplementation may be necessary to resolve the issue to avoid people from not obtaining the benefits of keto carnivore.

@@galadriel9473 I would recommend watching some of Elliot Overton (certified carnivore nutritionist in the UK) youtube channel on B1 thiamine deficiency. It's a rather simple fix using a temporary particular high dose B1 thiamine called tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide. A good magnesium, such as nano magnesium liquid) and methylated B complex for support is also recommended temporarily with B1 TTFD. Nobody should have to live with downregulated acetylcholine when there is a simple solution using supplements temporarily. Food alone does not provide enough of these high dose essential nutrients to reverse the damage.

I had GERD, although not real bad, but also a narrowing in my esophagus which all but caused certain types of food to just get stuck and even water wouldn't wash it down. My doctor wrote out a prescription for Prilosec. Now it was available over the counter but I think you could only get 2 weeks worth per bottle. I could get my prescription refilled every 3 months. But I decided I didn't like the side effects so I stopped.
I also had borderline sleep apnea, which seems to be the popular diagnosis these days.
A month after going on keto last August the GERD was gone and goodbye any potential sleep apnea because I lost 2 inches from my neck.

I was super excited about this because I thought you would once and for all answer the age old question of: is Acid Reflux caused by Too MUCH or Too LITTLE acid. Sounds like you are on the TOO MUCH side.
Slightly off topic but did you know that a lot of dogs suffer from GERD/acid reflux?
My dog was diagnosed with this just last month after a fluoroscopy and other tests. Yes he has spent most of his life (he's 13) eating kibble but now he is on a raw diet and after a couple weeks on PPIs it does seem that the acid reflux is getting better.
What I wanted to mention was that the Internal Med Specialist we went to recommended a hydrolyzed protein diet which is made out of .... cornstarch!!! No way I would feed that to my dog 🤷
As an animal lover I see a lot of the same issues being treated the same as in humans. It's concerning how many doctors are swayed by big Pharma or just don't know any better in either world.

You are absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for your informative videos. Very helpful!
I've gone carnivore now for 3 weeks or so. I feel fantastic, sleep better than I have in literally years, strong, alert, focused, weight is dropping quickly. I do though now have {developed} quite irritating heartburn and acid reflux which I never had before. It was just not a thing that would happen to me in general.. I started ketogenic diet a year ago, which worked very well for me, I dropped a lot of weight and many of my {allergic} skin reactions disappeared.. But I still have problems with arthritic fingers (63 - female) and problems with my eyesight that I'm trying to figure out by elimination diet. So I decided to give carnivore a shot. There's too much to explain here so I'm trying to condense as much as possible.
I was drinking a glass of diluted 2 tbsp lemon juice +1 tbsp ACV as suggested to do via internet (I know, I know, please don't yell at me 😅) and it seemed to with well for me. A couple weeks into carnivore, I can now hear my stomach gurgling constantly, have barely any appetite (which is a blessing considering I was a carb junkie before I started keto in general) and when I do finally eat, the food feels like it sits in my stomach like a rock, gurgling, and then I get heartburn and burping. Again, something I did not have.
I eat mainly beef, usually ground beef, a couple patties, not too big, cooked in ghee or olive oil, maybe a couple of eggs, and this is all I eat during the day. That amount once or twice. I was feeling so great about this until I started getting the acid reflux. I then tried using lemon juice and ACV but that would make it so much worse.
I don't want to get damage to my esophagus and don't want to feel this way anymore. Do you have suggestions on how I can combat this acid reflux NATURALLY ? I read so many articles, watch so many videos, I'm trying to hard to do things right for my carb damaged body, but I'm confused and worried.
I do not trust the physicians any more where I live. All they ever have done were to push pills at me that would mask my symptoms and pain. I don't want pills anymore. I don't want useless supplements. I haven't taken even an aspirin in over a year and I'm so thankful for that. Please, could you do a video about acid reflux, heartburn and digestion issues when following a carnivore diet? I would be so grateful.
Also one more request. A little guidance on the topic of oxalate dumping? I've been reading up on that and want to know if I should be concerned about that. I was eating massive amounts of Oxalates in the ketogenic diet. I'm confused about the whole subject anymore. Can't find a reputable, trustworthy doctor here (I'm in Europe but don't want to say where I'm living to not insult the country I live in. out of respect for them ((I'm American by birth)).
So again, guidance on a acid reflux from carnivore diet and oxalate dumping. If there are already videos by yourself, could you please direct them towards me? Thank you again for your time. 🙏💖

Breathlessness, inflamed/painful throat, hoarse voice, tiredness, etc. It's horrible to live with it. Had gastroendoscopy 2 hrs ago but the dr.didn't mention anything about any hernia.

Since going on a near-carnivore diet I’ve weaned myself off daily OTC-strength omeprazole, then stopped taking famotidine before bedtime. No night-time acid reflux. Maybe I could have done this years ago, maybe it’s the diet and the slight loss of weight that’s resulted. I don’t know. For now, at least, it’s gone.

Ive had reflux aince I was a kid, and had some serious kidney issues, never even considered the connection.

Thanks for explaining clearly the mechanics behind this phenomenon. Pregnancy provides another route for heartburn to occur. It would be interesting to see if reduced carb intake or carnivore intake provided substantial reduction of heartburn during pregnancy. I know just the sheer physical limitations of space contribute immensely.

I have a lower esophageal sphincter that does not close and have been on nexium for years. Have been on low carb ketogenic diet for two years and have lost 80 pounds. I have cured my metabolic syndrome including my diabetes and I am off all my medications except for ursodeoxycholic for PBC and nexium. In consultation with my hepatologist I am now taking 40 mg of nexium every other day to wean off of it down from 40 mg daily. However, on the days I do not take it I suffer from the reflux and spasms in my mid back. I have heard that reflux will worsen temporarily when nexium is stopped or reduced. Not sure whether or not this will resolve with time or if I should increase the dose again. My doctor advised that if I had problems with the lower dose to increase again. I don't know how long to wait. Lowered my dosage in December

The acid reflux treatment for gerd is to stop eating trouble-maker foods. The usual suspects include coffee, chocolate, alcohol, carbonated beverages, mint, garlic, onions, and spicy foods. Smoking also irritates the esophagus.

The way I understand it is that you want the PH of your stomach to be low and remain low. It is a too high PH of the stomach that causes "acid reflux", and that is why ACV and lemon juice will treat the CAUSE of acid reflux, because the PH is lowered to hopefully the right level where the stomach can do its job. ACV does work, and it works all the time; not just for an hour or so. I have tried it, but fortunately I very rarely get heartburn. Yes, what applies to ACV as mentioned in the video, also would apply to lemon juice. You don't want the enamel on your teeth to be eaten away by the lemon juice, but a little goes a long way, you don't need a gallon of water to dilute the ACV, especially if you dilute it with a little water before you take it.

Great visual explanations here! Thank you for that! I have a connective tissue disorder, hEDS, and this population has floppy tissues and herniate easily, some have major issues from organs falling as the connective tissue is so dysfunctional. It also has a lot of fatty liver and mitochondrial issues.. Unfortunately so many dietary issues, gastroparesis, mast cell issues etc. Etc make for challenging dietary patterns, not to mention the lack of energy, dislocations and pain to cook. I'm certainly not one of the worst cases but it blows. I've been keto 3 years and mostly carnivore..in due time I will be there but not sure how to eat more. I've been omading for 2.5 years and hard to break that pattern of no hunger. If anyone has any ideas for someone with low spoons (low energy) and a body that isn't cooperating, how to get over the hump I accept discussion and resources! It feels like a planning issue. Thanks everyone!

I have one of those but have been very low carb keto for 3 years and haven't had any heartburn or reflux since. I'm wondering if the breathing issues I have is related to it. I've had asthma since birth due to lung damage as a premie, but my asthma does come and go. I'm wondering if this is what causes some of my breathing issues when I'm not wheezing. Convincing my doc of this will be hard. It's been difficult dealing with her about keto in the first place.
