I watched 3 community members stream this game. As much as they could. Through a collective 10+ crashes, server side crashes, endless character killing bugs, the inability to remove a gun from your hands requiring a restart and a ton more.
Never actually seen something that broken in that many ways with such a weird mix of clear intent.

I actually don't see any real issue with this asset flip simulator. It's really well done, they clearly spent a large amount of the budget on those 3 different trees they added which don't even move with wind or anything, and these cars are quite well modeled/textured so they were probably worth the $20 they spent on that pack. Overall, I'd give it a solid 1/100.

I enjoy the immersion of the vehicle camera, you are able too play from the perspective of a dwarf, the hood a car, the roof, the drivers seat, a backseat passenger, even a bird chasing the car. You all are not realizing the amazing amount of gameplay this alone brings with most "games" only letting you see from the perspective of a boring human. Here the possibilities seem almost endless for role playing in the cars alone! People are just too small brained to appreciate such complex gameplay and roleplaying possibility. This is more than a game, this is a work of art with obviously immense love and passion put into creating for the world, sadly the world isn't ready for such greatness...
It is incredible to see people who truly appreciate this masterpiece, seeing those small details is not easy, not many have that ability.
And not only that, but also, among other things, they made a reference to the acclaimed Game of Thrones series, recreating the Wall, and to the Bible, with zombies that walk on water, referring to when Jesus walked on water. It is clear that they have worked on the game with passion and dedication, putting in those small details to create a complete experience, revolutionizing the industry. Great job, yes sir🤌

I love that they took the time to draw the dash in and a column shifter for an automatic, while also taking the time to draw a clutch pedal and a manual floor shifter but couldn’t be bothered to place the camera height correct while driving.
Backed this for 2 keys when it first came around. These guys got millions from funding alone, can’t say that I’m not surprised it turned out like this though.

Crazy to come back to the channel after 3 years and this saga is still ongoing
A guess at what went wrong: I think all their early development, and early development updates, were focused on smaller systems in the game. they probably had something that functioned and had most of those showcased features, but it only worked with a small static map, with little to no AI. Then they finally tried to build an open world with RNG and large amounts of zombies with dynamic lighting, and all variabilities that encompasses and shit just broke. I think little survived the transition beyond some art.
Followed this game for almost 6 years. The Devs were actually doing something at the start of development but it seems like in the the third year of development, the Devs got hit with a brick and the game became unplayable

Idk if it’s so much the devs for this game. I’ve seen a couple videos that said QI hired like “contractors” to work for them but it really was the Nick who has single handedly screwed everything up. His mismanagement of resources, people money etc

The audio for the weapons sounds like multiple identical audio files are being triggered simultaneously, hence the weird laser type sound you hear over the actual sound.
How did Dead Matter go from one of the most promising indie projects to an asset flip scam. I remember watching all the coverage you were doing of it back in the day, and it looked great. The quality and time they were putting into it along with all the dev blogs showing us tons of great progress. Then we get a game that is unrecognizable to it. To be fair to the devs, I'd be proud of this game... if it was my first attempt at making one and I had no intention of releasing it to anyone.
That is just it… it was never promising. The entire thing has been smoke and mirrors. All the old “gameplay” footage they showed was a flat out lie. They were just largely showcasing bought assets in a closed, single player environment. They knew none of it would actually make it to the game. We saw zero actual real gameplay. They have been straight up lying about the game, their technical ablities, and their overall progress.
thats the trick. 99.9% of these games are never more than an asset flip. they can not be anything else, ever. Developers with real talent dont flock to Kickstarter for the most part. At this point I cant even blame the people scamming - if the people are retarded enough to keep funding this shit, thats on the gamers now, not on the scammers.
@BigFryTV said it without actually saying it, probably to protect them (the devs who left) from community rage, because they really don't deserve it, but what you saw back then was the original intent, and then the devs who were worth a damn left to make a game in their spare time because they could see this tire-fire was going no where and that the money they made would never compensate for the lifelong reputation destruction that would be associated with them if they went through with Dead Matter and stayed as delusional as the rest of the team.
It was a scam from the jump. My friend backed this game and I laughed at him for it, he said it would be better than DayZ. Crazy watching people get reeled in.

This one hurt personally in a number of ways since I was one of the people that invested in it purely on the hype during Wave 1 of the IndieGoGo days. Even then I should have known the writing was on the wall because anyone who was there at the time all those years ago knows just how bad it was even getting the game.
This is actually one of the few games that made me stop believing in concept trailers and realize the difference but back when you look at the original videos and trailers for the game, it didnt come off as a concept, it came off as genuine footage. They had so many videos showing off all these complex features and intricate nuances that they had in the game like how you would be able to build a house down to the most minor detail of controlling the electrical grid of your home and being able to flip a switch that would turn on only certain lights in your house. Nobody even asked for all that but it doesnt cover the fact that was all a huge lie.
The only reason I had bought into the idea of this game was because from the gameplay and original promises this had shown off, it looked to be "Escape from Tarkov in a zombie world". Down to the inventory system and the weapon customization. I had always wanted a nice solo EFT experience, so I got hype and bought into it thinking I was finally getting that. What a mistake. The first signs that they didnt have everything under control was when they started the indiegogo immediately after the kickstarter to cash in on some extra funds. If you were in the discord, you knew how much of a whirlwind that was from how people couldnt even get on the page because it kept going down, and then once you did people werent getting their codes for x amount of time. The only thing I could compare it to was the issues people had with trying to get Ps5 and Series Xs when they first launched. Except this time it wasnt you fighting against a bunch of bots, it was fighting the studios own management incompetence and servers.
Even when you FINALLY got your key and started playing the game...omg. It was horrible. It wasnt even Alpha ready. It was more so, they finally modeled and coded just enough to put things in that were playable so they could test things and thats it. Whats insane is, the game was better during those starting days in Alpha than it is now. Im guessing this is owing to the people who ended up leaving the studio that actually knew what they were doing because at least back then, things worked even if they werent complete. Now, nothing works.
Whats crazy is, in those few days that I played when I first got it all those years ago, the zombies were SUPER aggressive. I mean you couldnt walk more than a couple feet without being attacked and killed. It felt like any sound above a whisper trigger a zombie to spawn randomly nearby out of thin air, and then they would RUN and attack you, even when you had just launched and were absolutely not ready. Now looking at how inanimate the zombies are its an insanely stark contrast to what I remember...
Hell, Im surprised the GUNS still dont work in this game. They didnt even all those years ago when I tried, but now it seems to still be the case. Back then, it was so hard to have fun and enjoy the gunplay because not only did the controls and keybindings not work properly, but the guns were super specific. I remember struggling to find just about anything and it frustrated me to the point where I just decided to use console commands, but even then it was a struggle because not just the specific ammo, but my guns wouldnt fire because the mag wasnt attached and didnt even spawn with the gun. So I had to do that and attach it. Then get the correct ammo, not to mention sometimes guns came not assembled so I had to put together the barrel, stock, and just about everything and was just absolutely frustrated. Like I just want to fire a gun in this game at least, while am I building the entire thing from the ground up in this desolate apocalypse. I am not having fun whatsoever. Idk how the game is now, but Id be hard pressed to say its any better, if at least a bit more simplistic and not as meticulous.
Then and even now the game looks lifeless, and thats a big issue too. I get its a zombie game, but how does that keep on ending up being the cop out excuse for why your game can be so boring. The world is so big, and empty with nothing to do in it. And then you cant even have any fun with the stuff that is in it like shooting zombies.
Overall...this game really disappointed me and its crazy to see how it ended up all these years. It was way too ambitious for its own good and hyped people up on lies. The thing about games like this though, is that the devs are going to be able to disappear into the sunset after this. Not like Murray and what happened with NMS that eventually got better, or how people still end up trusting Molyneux no matter how much hes kept screwing people over again and again. No. These guys are going to be able to disappear without a trace after this because of how underground indie they are except to a few niche people.

I remember when the game initially released on steam, the devs on discord could not manage the complaints people had for the game so they started banning everybody who was saying anything remotely negative about the game, backers or not. Game turned into a scam really quickly unfortunately
I paid $45 for early access years ago and have never touched it after the initial disappointment.

This reminds me my game dev school project where me and my friends made a bunch of cool assets but had very little to show in terms of gameplay or working code.
Now they can't hide their failures behind an NDA.

I remember during the key release disaster when only certain streamers could play the game that night and seeing people like Atomic Duck and Bigfry defending the game for a few months while people honestly questioning the game playability was even worse than this release.
Yup I remember that, he even blocked me on Twitter and said it was pre alpha and that they are working on it.

The 'RIP' and 'Titanic Flute' really fit the game quite well.
It's minor thing among the total mess, but the first vehicle having an automatic transmission gear selector, and a stick shift made me chuckle.

When I first backed this game I was a gamer and rn I am a game programming 2nd year student and I still can't believe this shit
I remember preordering the game, playing and hating it. Checked back in 2 months later, got stuck in a lake, because there was no swimming mechanics, softlocking myself. Read the news page about 4 months later to see they were "retooling our signage systems" and figured if they have time for that maybe the basic game loop was somewhat playable. So I went and softlocked myself underwater again. 10/10 IGN
This confirms my suspicion that the developers have focused on the wrong things (details instead of main game loops) and ran out of money, so they had to release the game in the current state. I'm sure some things in the game are super polished. For example, checking ammo has a cool animation with some of the guns. But that matters little when everything else is broken.
Incorrectly focusing is a common mistake beginner developers do. They spend an unproportionally large amount of time on minute details which probably will either be changed later anyway or a designer or some other person will do it better later. This is true for not just game development, but software development in general.

It sounds like the gun sounds are triggering multiple audio samples at the same time but SLIGHTLY spaced apart causing that weird phasing effect when you fire 🤦🏻♀️
Big fry i love that you mentioned vein at the end of your video because ive been playing it off an on for over a year and its honestly pretty decent for being this early in development and the dev does logs and keeps the community updated reletivly often

I bought the founder pack and never got ANY of my founder rewards. My friends and I put about two weeks worth of bug-finding and curated a list of bugged items, locations, entities (all with video evidence and crash logs) and were genuinely excited to be a part of the development.
When we sent their team our findings they took about thirty minutes to respond and told us to "quit spamming", then locked my account from their forums on their website, so I then had no way of petitioning for my unobtained founder items.
The devs for this shitshow should honestly be ashamed.
I got the email about the key releases. I didn't even bother opening it, and boy...am I glad I did.

i bought this for when the alpha came out, shocking to see it legitimately looks like its only gotten worse; so insane
I was told that the reason the game was so broken was because all the money went to staff that ended up being terrible, and they took a good portion of the funds before leaving. What was left was completely unusable, and they had to throw it all out and start from scratch. I was also told their funds had run out to a point where they had no choice but to release this month as they had nothing left after that point.
TBH i dont know what to believe anymore, but the fact that much was being charged just doesnt make any sense, and ive heard of rumors that nik or one of the others wasnt that good of a manager. Who knows. All I know is that game is probably going to always be a dud. Unfortunately. I dont think it can be saved.

What upsets me is that horrendous games like this get crowd funding, and as a result, it makes people weary of supporting crowd funded games. I've been pouring my blood, sweat, and tears into developing my dream horror game, and because of scams like this, I may not get funding when it comes time to start a campaign for it. If anyone supports my game though, you have my word that it won't turn out to be a turd like this. I stay up till 9AM almost every night trying to make it the best it can be. I also give full transparency and post dev logs every 1-2 weeks.

I remember getting access to the closed test, it wasn't too bad initially, it had good bones. I eventually refunded, but from what I've heard the game just got mismanaged to death after the decided to redo a lot of stuff that had working in the game.
The best decision I ever made was refunding this back when I played the first Alpha. Good to see it's about as stable now as it was back then

They came up with the perfect game..... if their intent was to create a driving simulator based on how senior citizens drive in that south park AARP episode. That said I paid $2 for better shareware games on a floppy at the dollar store in 1993
last month i released my first game. i had help from a couple of freelancers over the course of 2 years, but i got it out and its live. originally, the game had no singleplayer at all, but a few members of the community wanted to play against bots because the multiplayer serves are quiet...so, i spent about 3 weeks making the bot ai from scratch and implementing them. while they arent winning any AI awards, theyre competent and at least can mimic players reasonably well..for a few weeks of hard work, i think i did OK.
its kinda disheartening to see these games that are essentially asset flips with a few million $ of budget get released like this. but, then again, at least i feel good knowing that i can make a fun game that isnt filled with game breaking bugs, despite having literally 0 technical experience.

Aww man. I remember when I preordered this game for 80 dollars (got the 2 pack). And I originally found your channel for the first time all those years ago on the dead matter hype train. Huffing that hopium everytime more shit would come out about the game. Everytime they would go silent I would always defend them saying "no no, let them cook" only for EACH and EVERY new build to perform worse than the last while simultaneously having less features. It truly was astounding how poorly this game was managed. Only hope I had for a "remotely polished release" in the early access is now gone. The game went from "mildly buggy with hitching issues" to "15 fps slide show with somehow even less content" like how???? The game had NPCs when it first released into closed alpha, what happened there!?!? Why are so many buildings on the new map just half in the ground!? It's shocking. As a fledgling unity dev (I know, I probably won't be on unity much longer) assuming that building a world is even remotely similar, it would probably take me a day or two to fix all the buildings clipping into the ground. Like seriously, what happened...

Yeah i tried this again, a couple weeks ago, after a year+ since i last tried it when the Beta release was out - thinking, 'let them cook' can only get better, things will have been improved on. I was wrong. Somehow it was more broken than it was then, with Menu bugs, Character creation bugs etc, and in game so many audio bugs and other bugs and it was just god damn terrible. I wish i got a refund way back when from the Kickstarter bs.
