My personal hot take is that back in the day I'd take BF4 over hardline any day of the week, but today going back hardline feels like it's aged like fine wine, while BF4 feels pretty slow and a bit less refined. Definitely feel like time did hardline good but because of the reputation it did have the player base is extremely small
@@humorousdwarf9090 depends on the platform I suppose. Never understood why it even got the hate in the first place. I liked the Idea during the beta back then but didn't end up buying it due to the sheer amount of backlash it received, there was just no point in buying it for me already knowing that there might not be a lot of players, not to mention the fact that they'd need some time to fix it up either way considering that every release since BF3 had been a bug fest for at least the first few months.
@@humorousdwarf9090 if you play on Xbox there was about 2 to 3 healthy servers goings. That was a few months ago tho, couldn't tell you the current state. And you can't really be picky with what game mode you get
Those weirdly expensive games are priced that way for scams regarding 'random key boxes' on scummy key-reselling sites. (Those that promise 'at least one 60$ game!'.) A few days ago some devs even re-priced and re-named their games to fool people into thinking they're purchasing Helldivers 2, BG3 or Counter Strike. Because apparently you can not just re-name your game once released but also the name of the publisher and dev studio, which is insane...)
It's deffo just a way to make big money 🤑 u make a game like that and u sell it cheap but say u sell it for 2.99 and sell 200 u only make 600 ISH if u sell it for 200 and sell 10 u make 2000 then u have multiple games all at high prices that are piss easy to make rince and repeat who ever is doing it is probably making a killing
Randoomly came across this channel few months ago and love the dead game series. Really enjoy the editing and format and how wholesome you are. For some reason despite not having played 99% of the games shown on this channel, they have some kind of nostalgic feel to it
About TheLargestDog: I remember being in a Murder Miners server a few years ago, hosted by The Largest Dog himself. It was an FFA on one of his maps, and he was AFK for the entire match. there was a few players who were killing him and teabagging him, and it didn't sit right with me. I have a lot of experience playing some of the older Halo games, and my skill in those transferred seamlessly to Murder Miners. I spent the match fighting off 3 or so newbies while protecting the AFK Largest Dog. Didn't understand his significance until I looked more into the game's community. RIP Largest Dog, you were a legend.
bro keep doing these. This brought back some suppressed memories of online friends in games. Especially the pancake guy encounter, it was so easy back then, those friends you chatted with with a couple of times on the game and some still managed to feel like best friends. What amazing memories you uncovered, thank you.
It was part of an ill-fated attempt by the Squad devs to publish titles based off of their version of combined arms warfare. It had virtually no marketing or hype behind it after Post Scriptum fell flat on its face.
It was released on the time of the apex of Squad-type games, and BF1 was not that old yet so the market was just a bit too saturated I guess especially with Verdun.
I hated that BF Hardline died. It was my favorite BF game and was so fun to snipe on the big maps, as well as drive the vehicles and just play for fun. It was my favorite large map war games. My favorite thing that I did in that game would have to be driving the hidden couch car on one of the maps (some desert map) and finding it was huge fun.
There was this one World War 2 RTS I played on a CD as a kid and mostly forgot about. I remember it being quite fun, yet difficult, and quit playing after a while, probably because I couldn't beat a mission or something. Eventually ended up losing the CD too somewhere along the way, and the PC it was installed on. However, it lived rent free in my head for all those years. I never forgot about playing the game, nor what it looked like, just all the details such as the name, franchise, and developer. It was always "That One WW2 RTS I Played as a Kid but Don't Remember." I never attempted to seek out the game, since there's a mountain of WW2 strategy games to climb through and I assumed it would be forgotten shovelware. It was Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. I have never known the title of this game yet always remembered it this whole time. I immediately recognized it when the footage popped up, even though you played a different game in the series. Thank you, Rye, for finally solving the mystery of this game after so long. I'm definitely going to play it again now.
i played one called panzers phase 2 and it was a ww2 rts that had tanks but wasnt focused around them, maybe its worth looking it up to see if that was it?
@@knifed91 Man don't get me started on that. I still remember the day when I borrowed money from my grandpa to buy bk1. Used to play all day. I have all BK games on steam and still occasionally play them.
Similar to beyond the wire, there was a WW2 game called Heroes and Generals that I used to play all the time in 2016. It used to average over 10,000 players but now doesn’t ever go above 10…
Tower unite's a very interesting case of what happens when you can't get an influx of new players to funnel into the less popular modes. It was originally a pair of the most popular Gmod servers, Gmod Tower, that was basically an MMO mario party, and being attached to that far, far more popular game meant that you'd get a whole lotta both new and occasional players joining constantly, to play with the regulars and keep the mini games alive. They eventually wanted to move it off of Gmod because of the source engine's limitations and having their own identity, but... They didn't really change the structure of the game at all. And that became a problem when it had a 20$ price tag. Suddenly, you arn't getting new players and occasional players anymore. So there were barely any players to play the minigames, which kinda killed them, which was half the appeal of the game (again, MMO mario party), so it kinda lead to a death spiral for the game based on its ill-fitting design. The creative/social aspects of the game were largely free from this curse, but the loss of half the game was still enough to drive many off, leaving only the most hardcore left around. Its definitely sad to see what was once a hub for genuinely millions of players, where servers had ques to get in and you could literally see anything or meet anyone, decay into this, but... its not like its over. I don't know what's going through the dev's minds, but they know these issues. They know the game's failing to capture the audience they *know* is there. And they've been cooking something for a while. Hopefully they can solve the issues plauging the game, cause... It was fun whike it lasted.
You need to do BRINK. It was the last game I got at a midnight release for the 360. It's FTP on steam now, averages 8 players or so. I have every achievement for it
Lol I remember trying to play brink on my PC, and it was the ultimate test of my computers hardware. It ran at like 2 fps, and I remember being so dissapointed. My parents got me a cheap gaming laptop back then for christmas and I was able to play with 20 fps!
Maaaaan... Murder Miners brought back serious good memories. I remember when that game was huge, and getting all of my friends to buy it since it was legit only $1 on the indie market. Nothing will ever be as memorable as the zombies and big team battle matches on MM. Building an impromptu base or brrowing into the map to hide will never be replicated anywhere the same way, and no Fortnite allowing for a tower to be dropped at your feet doesn't count.
Hardline is usually semi-populated on one server during evenings on EU time. It's fun to hop on occasionally and play a few rounds, even if I may get salty a bit. Glad you had fun!
Wasn't expecting to see Combat Mission on the list, actually I wasn't expecting to see Combat Mission really anywhere outside of those who know it and some RTS circles. For some more context on it to those curious, Combat Mission is actually a military simulator and a different version (Combat Mission Pro) is actually employed by militaries. Think of it as kind of the Arma of RTS/Turn-Based games with it being the most realistic game for the genres as well as incredibly difficult because of that, the Dark Souls of RTS essentially. Unlike other games where you can just send units in you can't really do that in Combat Mission where if you don't employ real life tactics you're gonna lose and lose pretty bad (just like Rye did, and it would've been worse if the enemy had just mortars with how grouped up and exposed his infantry was). There's a few games with 4 being WW2, 2 being modern and 2 cold war (+3 older games from the earlier 2000s which are pretty different and another one set in the Soviet-Afghan War). The most interesting thing about the games though are how the modern ones have predicted 2 conflicts now (well 3). Shock Force (the OG one) came out like ~3 years before the Civil War in Syria and while Black Sea was set in a hypothetical invasion of Ukraine in 2017, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea while it was in development (which it had been since 2009). Then right before Russian troops started mobilising on the border in 2022, they announced their DLC for Black Sea... (though while it is finished or pretty finished, it's currently been delayed till the war's over) I wouldn't really recommend it though to those who aren't into MILSIM or wanting a challenging RTS but on their website (battlefront.com) there are demos for each game. They're also still being developed with a new engine coming soon hopefully as well as DLC and possibly a new game too.
I played hell out of the original Beyond Overlord and Barbarossa to Berlin back in the day. I was broke teenager back then so I pirated 'em. Bit later actually I bought the anthology release containing first two games and Afrika Korps. Only to find out that assholes shipped German version with no swastikas, Waffen SS troops re-branded into something like waffen ZZ or waffen grenadiers, historical names of people involved, dates and locations purged from mission briefings to countries that doesn't hate actual education or fun. Replacing textures, briefing texts and other stuff would have been a massive hassle without scripts or something to automate whole process. Never went back to the series after that. Ever since I have held opinion that German versions of any WWII games should be made fundamentally incompatible with rest of the world as long as the country as whole hates education.
These communities. It's so relatable. This is exactly how my main game is. Hearing one of the guys in the video say "we used to play on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, but now it's just Saturday" also hits home. We did too, and now it's just Friday. And like someone else in the video mentioned, we mostly get old players revisiting the game as well, rather than new players. Though it does happen occasionally, and we're always happy to have them. Maybe once every 2 years we get a new player that really gets into it and becomes a new pillar of our community. Small gaming communities are an amazing thing to be a part of tbh!
@@SaltySlice Probably not the same but mine is a very small part of the halo community that has been completely forgotten about. The roleplay community The diversity of the social aspect and dynamic was amazing since opposing opinions clashed in the 100s but still worked together to build one of the most creative and competitive communities out there. The military service members kept up the strict attitude which enhanced the roleplay and the kids would bring creativity and deviance to the game
It’s sad knowing some of my favourite games will be in similar situations, namely titanfall 2, and due to it being a source game I doubt we will get a proper sequel or game similar in movement.
Murder miners almost made me cry 😂 that game used to be my life on the 360 and i used to play with The Largest Dog somewhat regularly. He was a nice dude and his maps are still some of the most creative customs ive seen in any game.
Your videos are perfect. I have been for years looking to have a glimpse into games kept by small communities with almost no players online or just abandoned, but I could never find anything with my searches, until, I found your channel a few months ago and it's just perfect. I'm surprised no one had the idea of exploring these abandoned games before and making videos about them like you've been making.
This series is the personification of the word "wholesome". While the rest of YT freaks out about P2W models, 120$ AAAA games and pointing out graphical glitches in out of bounds areas, this series really takes us to the core of gaming. To a time of saving up gifts from Grandma to buy a new physical game copy, planning for hours at school with friends about what to do in game later, spending 100s of hours on a 5$ purchase and just having a fun time. A time before things got complicated, our friends fell apart or passed away, a time before gaming became a multi billion dollar industry with all the glitz and glam of a fashion week and no heart. I still stay in some of those old discord groups where I met people during the early monster hunter games. We've been through each other's weddings and divorces, talking someone out of taking their own lives and even though we don't play any games together anymore, it takes me back to a time where it all began. :')
I think you should play Dino D-day. I used to play it and since I’m a grown-ass man I rarely play video games (but never grew out of living dinosaurs) but I was kind of shocked to see that one day that game had no players at all on multiplayer except for one player I have as a friend. Every time I do get to hop on Steam I see him still playing Dino D-day by himself.
Tried to play that game a year ago because I remember hearing about it back in 2015~ kinda sad that it's dead as at the time I wanted to play it so bad
The thing about Steam and PC's in general is that you'll have a lot of people using old and low powered machines and/or without a lot of money. So some of these older/free/lower spec games tend to keep a player base much longer as it gives those people more games to choose from
Just found out after showing him this video, my math tutor was the best altitude player of all time and how he won 5 world champions under some name that started with an S that I can’t remember but he was saying how he was number 1 on both leaderboards for years and he even knew I few of the guys from the video that he used to play with back in the day. He told me all this… an hour after I had coincidentally watched this video and found out what altitude even was, not to mention he brought up the game him self by complete chance.
I fear this may become the legacy of Helldivers. Not Helldivers 2, but the original twin stick shooter released on PS3 & carried over on PS4. It's successor absolutely over shadows the original, but after watching videos of Rye. I'm reminded there's likely always going to be a nostalgic crowd.
MurderMiners was dope! Back in the day the Xbox 360 version was popping, the steam version still gets updates, but it is dead. Glad to see someone make some content about it.
games with a low player base always have the best communites because you know they actually have fun playing the game and they become good friends with everyone because its always the same people still playing it.
Your Videos are always very in-depth. We don't see this type of high-quality content on the platform much so thank you Rye Games for more of your slop.
I love Tower Unite- I have always been a big arcade person since I was a kid, and it has really scratched that itch for me in a lot of ways. However, it does make me sad to see how largely ignored it has been for so long, and to know that there has been such a ground up effort for this game. I hope one day we see a stable, feature rich final release version of the game and all the developers of the game can truly feel fulfilled with their work.
I played and had a personal conversation with the largest dog in a random server In murder miners back in 2016. Murder miners was my childhood game fr.
I actually used to play murder miners back in the day when it first came out. And i actually played with the largest dog one time when he was playing on a map he recently built making sure it was perfect. He was a legend
This video made me remember about murder miners, and seeing his maps actually brought nostalgia from them. As a kid I never even agknowledged that they were player made maps, and hearing about his passing is sad. He was the one who gave me those memories
Man... Tower Unite could've been so damn good. I played it when it was still called Gmod Tower in GMOD. They made Tower Unite as an attempt at a standalone game with new and improved features. I played the earliest version of Tower Unite but my excitement for the game died since there weren't many players on and there was nothing to do yet apart from golfing and gambling
me and my friends still play murder miners since it was a game from one of my friend’s childhood, great game and lots of fun with a really genuine community
Murder miners was so much fun back in the day I remember all the game modes and servers there were. The city maps and using the grappler to get round and killing other players
I came here to see interesting dead lobbies, not tearing up about my time spent playing murder miners. I had a solid 2 years with that being my most played game, even over actual Halo The Largest Dog was a real MVP. I didn't spend a ton of time in his levels simply because they were so expansive that you would spend minutes looking for another player, even in a full lobby- but he always, and I mean ALWAYS had a lobby going. Pretty sure he'd leave his 360 running while he was asleep and afk it the whole time. It was hard not to be a little jealous of the name he'd made for himself in the community, but it also wasn't unearned. Dude had the single largest impact on the game out of any active or inactive player. I was extremely sad to see he had passed away and wished I had known beforehand. I think a lot of us wished we had known because we can attribute a lot of our most positive murder miners memories to his efforts to bring life and creativity to the game If I could have just one single day to go back to those times
The Largest Dog was like a big brother to me when i was in school, i remember coming home from school and hopping on the game, this video is how i learned he passed away. thank you truly from the bottom of my hear rye
It’s nice knowing that there’s still communities of games whether dead or forgotten that are still around and even more all basically know each other and the wholesome convos.
i use to play murder miners about four years ago, idk if he still does this but when i played every Thursday the developer would come on and play with us
I loved murderminers when i was a kid, played it all the time with my middle school friends and had some good memories on it. Bought it on steam about two weeks ago and was very sad to see no servers or players online. Really hope the game gets a breath of life after this video.
people that still keep games like this alive are the core of the gaming community, being able to play the games that shaped us as who we are even if its dead is just so gratifying, i seriously think people should try one day the games we loved as a child have a chance to still be beating
I remember playing with the largest dog on that map where you were in a huge house and driving around with him in the car like 10 years ago. Cool memories
Murder miners was the game I played when i went to my younger cousins to play it back when you’d stay playing till the sun came back up. We used to have the best memories. My aunt passed away about a year ago so seeing that game just brought back a lot of good memories like her coming in yelling at us to go to bed already!! Because the fucken birds are chirping
Not only did you show off combat mission, you also showed off my favorite combat mission UA-camr, thanks for covering it I would have never guessed you would
Beyond the wire was such a fun game my really good friend and I used to play together, we would always try and run a MG team and hold a flank, we stopped an entire advance on our lines with our MG and grenades. He passed away unexpectedly from a work accident shortly after after that gnarly line defense, haven’t played it since.
the first two incarnations of the "Combat Mission"-series (along with the DOS game Steel Panthers), CMBO (Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord) and CMBB (Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin) almost cost me a university degree, so, thumbs up for including them.

Hardline was great, had really good shoting and feeling of the wapons. The problem was that the game wasnt about USA vs RU and military stuff....Loved that game...
Battle field hardline was such a fun game of my childhood! It deserves way more players, so many memories of playing Hotwire for literally hours straight
brooo murder miners was one of my childhood games i remember fighting off zombies all the time and building random stuff everyday for ages trying to complete parkour corse over and over again
wow, sad to hear i hate how cruel life can be but even as a person who doesnt play murder miners or even ever has, i appreciate the ability for his supporters to be able to enjoy his maps while he is gone! i hope for the murder miners X they release his maps to still be enjoyed by everyone new and a veteran at the games! much love to the Devs and to TLD
Scrap Mechanic is a good example of a dead game with a small community still keeping it alive. It went from videos with millions of views on the game to being nearly abandoned due to the lack of updates. Released in 2016 it's a physics-based sandbox where you can build pretty much anything you can imagine in a procedurely generated 3D world. There is multiplayer, a survival mode, challenge mode, and of course - creative mode. I think it would be nice to shed more light on this amazing game and hopefully help in revitalising its playerbase and encouraging the devs to give the game more attention.
You should try natural selection 2, its not quite dead with 2 or 3 servers full at times but usually 1 full server in europe, but its really fun and interesting gameplay
It's a shame 'Beyond the Wire' doesn't have a bigger community, it's such a fantastic game in a historical setting which just isn't covered that much despite it's immense scale and the profound impact it had on history as well as technology and medical science.

I loved Battlefield Hardline. I spent so much time on that game. It's just so unfortunate that it's considered dead.
Didn't even know Battlefield hard-line was considered dead cause I have a pretty easy time finding a match
And you can't really be picky with what game mode you get
Hardline is the shit. The real legends drive the couch.
Those weirdly expensive games are priced that way for scams regarding 'random key boxes' on scummy key-reselling sites. (Those that promise 'at least one 60$ game!'.)
A few days ago some devs even re-priced and re-named their games to fool people into thinking they're purchasing Helldivers 2, BG3 or Counter Strike. Because apparently you can not just re-name your game once released but also the name of the publisher and dev studio, which is insane...)
Came here to say this
yeah could be money laundering also
It's deffo just a way to make big money 🤑 u make a game like that and u sell it cheap but say u sell it for 2.99 and sell 200 u only make 600 ISH if u sell it for 200 and sell 10 u make 2000 then u have multiple games all at high prices that are piss easy to make rince and repeat who ever is doing it is probably making a killing
i legit just thought it was money laundering lmao
@@stardust-reverie that was my first thought too
Randoomly came across this channel few months ago and love the dead game series. Really enjoy the editing and format and how wholesome you are. For some reason despite not having played 99% of the games shown on this channel, they have some kind of nostalgic feel to it
About TheLargestDog:
I remember being in a Murder Miners server a few years ago, hosted by The Largest Dog himself.
Beyond the Wire really looks amazing. You can tell a lot of love went into it.
Sad thing is that people hated the game just for being about cops instead of the "modern warfare" theme.
Hotwire is probably one of the funnest game modes there has ever been in a first person shooter
That is wholesome as fuck
i played one called panzers phase 2 and it was a ww2 rts that had tanks but wasnt focused around them, maybe its worth looking it up to see if that was it?
probably one the Blitzkrieg games, loved that as a kid
ok
@@knifed91 Man don't get me started on that. I still remember the day when I borrowed money from my grandpa to buy bk1. Used to play all day. I have all BK games on steam and still occasionally play them.
Similar to beyond the wire, there was a WW2 game called Heroes and Generals that I used to play all the time in 2016. It used to average over 10,000 players but now doesn’t ever go above 10…
So when are you and Pancake Lover getting married?
Idk
I remember hardline had this Florida mansion map where a hurricane would spawn and our entire team camped the mansion and defended it. Good times
And the couch car was also so fun. And the money game mode
I have every achievement for it
Wow, brink takes me back, I used to think it was super fun, but I was like 9 or something
BRINK was an insane game. Absolutely loved it
Was the first and last game Brink I ever pre-ordered.
Haven't heard about Brink in years, Its crazy I kinda liked that game too. It was like the fps game with parkour before Titan Fall was even a thing.
I absolutely love the concept of these games only really being functional at certain times and everybody coming together to play them.
Hardline is usually semi-populated on one server during evenings on EU time. It's fun to hop on occasionally and play a few rounds, even if I may get salty a bit. Glad you had fun!
My favorite is the couch car lol
(though while it is finished or pretty finished, it's currently been delayed till the war's over)
I wouldn't really recommend it though to those who aren't into MILSIM or wanting a challenging RTS but on their website (battlefront.com) there are demos for each game.
@@762rk95tp you have zero knowledge about german culture, german education, and germany itself
I got combat mission afganistan on cd back in the day, well men of war is piece of cake in comparison to say the least

That is so wholesome tbh
What’s ur game?
@@SaltySlice Probably not the same but mine is a very small part of the halo community that has been completely forgotten about. The roleplay community
The diversity of the social aspect and dynamic was amazing since opposing opinions clashed in the 100s but still worked together to build one of the most creative and competitive communities out there.
7:30 - It's honestly just so sweet to see some random guy on a dead game to say "love you" before you logged off. It so freaking wholesome
Enough to make a grown man cry
Geez man, this spun me out, so true
I think you should play Dino D-day. I used to play it and since I’m a grown-ass man I rarely play video games (but never grew out of living dinosaurs) but I was kind of shocked to see that one day that game had no players at all on multiplayer except for one player I have as a friend. Every time I do get to hop on Steam I see him still playing Dino D-day by himself.

Please ask them to come back to try out the ladder. Would love to try them out! And of course, you should give it a go, too!
I fear this may become the legacy of Helldivers. Not Helldivers 2, but the original twin stick shooter released on PS3 & carried over on PS4. It's successor absolutely over shadows the original, but after watching videos of Rye. I'm reminded there's likely always going to be a nostalgic crowd.
nah heldivers 1 sucks like we all knew that

I hope one day we see a stable, feature rich final release version of the game and all the developers of the game can truly feel fulfilled with their work.

Murder miners was so much fun back in the day I remember all the game modes and servers there were. The city maps and using the grappler to get round and killing other players
I came here to see interesting dead lobbies, not tearing up about my time spent playing murder miners. I had a solid 2 years with that being my most played game, even over actual Halo
The Largest Dog was a real MVP. I think a lot of us wished we had known because we can attribute a lot of our most positive murder miners memories to his efforts to bring life and creativity to the game
If I could have just one single day to go back to those times
The Largest Dog was like a big brother to me when i was in school, i remember coming home from school and hopping on the game, this video is how i learned he passed away. thank you truly from the bottom of my hear rye

It’s crazy that the Altitude servers and website is still up.
people that still keep games like this alive are the core of the gaming community, being able to play the games that shaped us as who we are even if its dead is just so gratifying, i seriously think people should try one day the games we loved as a child have a chance to still be beating
I remember playing hardline when I was a kid, on the dust bowl map, just throwing a C4 into the road and waiting for someone to speed by in a car
I love that this guy actually interacts with the community and gives them traction, shows that he really cares.

Murder miners was the game I played when i went to my younger cousins to play it back when you’d stay playing till the sun came back up. We used to have the best memories. Beyond the wire was such a fun game my really good friend and I used to play together, we would always try and run a MG team and hold a flank, we stopped an entire advance on our lines with our MG and grenades.
This was sad to watch, knowing that my most treasured childhood games will join the pile. Maybe even soon. So thanks for the memories boys.
It's a shame 'Beyond the Wire' doesn't have a bigger community, it's such a fantastic game in a historical setting which just isn't covered that much despite it's immense scale and the profound impact it had on history as well as technology and medical science.
TheLargestDog Passed!!! What!! Dude ive not played in so many years.
