Since I know you genuinely want to get in touch with Scott McNeil I’m replying to this in hopes you’ll see it, there’s a mostly transformers focused UA-camr named TJ Omega who has done several interviews with Scott for over a decade now I believe, if anyone could get you in contact with Scott, it’s him.
The Generation x comic is so good. It deserved so much better. The criticism about the school being so empty and Xavier not being around is explained by the Gen X comic having Emma and Sean mentor the kids at Emma's old school from the New Mutants days in Boston.
To be fair, it’s a frequent thing in the comics for there to be mutants whose mutations are more of a curse than anything else. Shout out to my boy, Maggot
That one blonde girl is treated like an outcast because her mutant is that she’s too muscular, but these days we live in the age of people loving muscle mommies. This TV movie was ahead of its time.
Hey, Legoking from the future here! He did it! He talked about the JL tv movie! Not only that, but also a whole bunch of other failed superhero pilots.
8:47 to be fair, that's how the Gen X comics were. An offshot of the Xavier Institute run by Banshee & Emma at the old Massachusetts Academy with just a small roster of mutants. The idea of the school being a large bustling academy has only really been around for the last 20 years. For most of X-History, the school has been pretty empty, barely a school. When it was the original five, it was just them and Prof X. When it was the New Mutants, there were no other students, just them and whatever X-Men roster was running around
i get the feeling that this was the year of bumper robinson in the 90's. the jacksons, the OJ Simspon tv movie on fox and this guess it was his moment at the time
Does anyone remember mutant X, basically it was this X-Men show they didn’t feature any mutants from the comics and was it own separate thing from the comics and movies
Great video, but it would've been nice if you mentioned a few thing about the Generation X comic series, that this movie is based on. At least, it would have explained this unusual (for general audience) roster of characters cuz it is present in this exact series.
I mean, the rooster (including Xavier's school being run by Emma frost and Banshee with no Xavier in sight) was from the comics.... They replaced Synth (who can copy any mutant powers) and Chamber (Who is constantly on fire with a gaping hole, which would have made him horrible to adapt even with a better budget, and was the telepath of the group..) with the Cyclops expy and Husk became the super-strong girl... Otherwise, that's the comics team, yes. It's mostly the lack of good plot and budget that is hurting, because the comics the show was "adapting" was popular for a few years, and people did learn to care about the group.
Damn, even compared to other old superhero stuff like those captain America movies where he wore a motorcycle helmet or that justice league pilot with fire & ice in it, at least those were like…. somewhat remembered. This is is just like completely forgotten lol, props on you for finding it
It's actually one of the most prominent things on my radar between the ones you name. I think this even aired on television where I first saw it (in the Netherlands. Probably some summer time later at night air time filler, but still). From the other properties, the JL series is one I'm least aware of.
The fact that they were willing to create a pilot to an X-Men drama really shows how popular they are. 0:58 You really should review Godzilla Singular Point sometime if you want to justify the Godzilla in the name
That's one of the reasons I'm excited for X-Men in the MCU. There's no possible way they can make Mr. Sinister or Apocalypse sympathetic villains. They're simply evil as fuck 😂😂
I was literally just watching ur tmnt video and I went to uphold ur promise at the end of ur videos about 3 other videos coming out in the past month and this video proved it right..well played..
Wow, I didn't even know there was an early live action X-Men attempt. And this didnt have any big name Mutants(except Jubilee). No wonder no one talks about this. Also, why was 2000s Rouge mentioned when the character has always been white?
I first heard about this movie in my X-men history Encyclopedia book copy from 2007. It easily started a new gap in my mind making me eager to learn more about it. Great video. I can see why it didn’t truly take off but they at least had the Dreamworld and that definitely looks like the coolest part of the movie! Great review! Looking forward to more good X-men content from you in the future!
3:35 Wait he's that Angelo? The one that was crucified and died in a Chuck Dixon X-Men Issue that Linkara made fun of cause he didn't know a thing about him? That Angelo?.
Yep. this was an attempt at adapting the Generation X comics, given the rooster (I think only pseudo-cyclops and maybe super-strong girl weren't main characters from the comics? Wait, Jubile was a main character in another X-book at the time...). Ironically, Skin/Angelo might be the one who stuck closer to the comics, and his powers were not portrayed that way.
Buff and Refrax are basically the dollar store version of Husk and Chamber. Main reason for the change was because their power would’ve been way too expensive for this for those. I don’t know those characters, husk can cheddar skin and become anything. Like a layer skin can become diamond, metal, stone, lava, or even uranium all underneath. Fun fact, husk had a pretty sweet relationship with Toad. Chamber has psionic abilities. When his powers first emerged, they destroyed his lower jaw, leaving a gaping hole down to his chest. Emitting flame like energy that he tries to control. He’s also a bit of a telepath, which is how he is able to talk now. Except his telepathy only works one way. Like he can talk to you telepathically but you can’t talk to him the same way, unless you’re an actual telepath.
I remember being incredibly eXcited when I first saw this at bond st video in the 90s. I couldn’t trick myself into enjoying it one bit I was 9 or something
There's another X-Men show that actually did get made, but is probably just as, if not, more obscure than this: Mutant X. It aired in 2001, lasted only 3 seasons, and I have heard absolutely no one talk about it. The only reason I've heard of it was because I was scrolling through Tubi and happened to find it; though, I haven't watched it yet. I don't know if you'd want to review it at the moment since Avi Arad was executive producer on it, but it is out there if you want to look at another obscure X-Men thing.
As a GenX’er, and a fan of Generation X (the comic) by Scott Lobdell and Chris Bachalo, you wouldn’t have wondered a lot of these things had you read it. Is it bad, oh hell yes, but the things you comment on like Skin and M are fleshed out (pun intended) in the comic and I’m sure was planned in the future after this back door pilot. Emma Frost and Sean Cassidy were given a place to start the new school in the Berkshire’s in MA. I get you are commenting on the bad made for TV movie, but you didn’t really go into the source material at all. Even less than the show did. And for the record; the shows these days can’t wrangle a 10th of the viewership of today because there are too many channels and streaming services. Something gets an 8 share now and it’s a miracle. An 8 when this aired would be cancelled faster than it aired.
It really bothers me you keep calling this an X-Men adaptation when it’s a Generation X adaptation. That’s like saying Teen Titans is a Justice League adaptation. This movie is pretty faithful to the setup of the Generation X comic at the time. That’s not to say it’s GOOD, but it at least seems to try. It even had the sense to introduce stand-ins for characters that were too costly to use (Buff for Husk and Refrax for Chamber) instead of using the characters in name only or trying to do a version of their powers and failing miserably. The only two issues I have with it lore-wise are (a) it should take place at Massachusetts Academy and not Xavier’s, and (b) they left out a character - Synch - for seemingly no reason even though his powers are very tv friendly.
me: huh... this isn't what i remembered, maybe i thought of another movie about teenage powered kids "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" *stretchy mcrubber comes up in the introductory and ending sum ups me: ah, there it is :P
Speaking of little-known X-Men properties, have you read any of the new Ultimate X-Men run (all two issues, lol)? If so, what do you think so far? If not, why not?

White Jubilee sounds like a mixed drink.
The X in Godzilla X Kong stands for Xavier
Underrated.
The Generation x comic is so good. It deserved so much better.

Gotta love how being a buff girl in the 90s qualifies you into being a mutant.
So, does that make Noi from Dorohedoro a mutant?
To be fair, it’s a frequent thing in the comics for there to be mutants whose mutations are more of a curse than anything else. Shout out to my boy, Maggot
Or Wither, whose mutant power is that he DECAYS everything that makes skin contact with him.
And people thought Rogue had it bad.

What's most impressive is how Xavier always manages to find such old footage and sometimes even lost media from decades ago for these videos.

The full film is on UA-cam...

Max Headroom already proves Matt Frewer's an exceptional personality when it comes to character acting ngl
Now I want to see Xavier talk about the 1997 Justice league tv movie. Another failed pilot for a live-action superhero show!
That Pilot was like friends meet super heroes. Or a Sorta Proto “Justice friends” from Dexters Lab without the intentional comedy.
Agreed would also live for him to talk about the 70s Spider-Man live action
