This is awesome. Thank you so much for making this wonderful exposé on the first Fantastic Four! Your views are spot on and are deeply appreciated. On the 30th anniversary the truth must be told and the film released. Here’s to the future my friend. Yours, Doctor Doom 🔥
I'm so honored that you enjoyed it! You're the best portrayal of Victor Von Doom we've ever had in live action and I'm a huge fan of your performance! May the film someday get it's proper due! And hey, maybe one of these days we could redub it ourselves with a clearer take of your lines just to see how it would sound. My email is in my channel bio if you're interested in that one... Thanks so much for the kind words!

As strange as it is, I actually kind of like this film. It has all of the charm that a B-movie provides, but just with well-known, licensed characters. I think there is a novelty to it that I haven’t seen in any other film of it’s kind. Not to mention, it really embraces the cheesy fun tone of the comics, that you really don’t find in most superhero movies today.
I was just thinking how cool it would be to get another gutter space and hear Xavier discuss all the stuff going on with warner brothers, and then he casually dropped a 30 minute video about one of the most infamous comic book movies ever produced. What an actual legend this guy is
There will come a time, when news is too much. When topics to talk about will run out, and Spider-Man media will cease to exist. In the meantime, WB will still be alive and kicking, cancelling their 18th project straight, a new streak. In that moment, space and time will not matter anymore, because news will come out sooner than man can possibly decipher it. And when that happens, the only refuge from it will be... THE GUTTER SPACE!
Great video! The way Eichinger lied to the cast and crew was so infuriating, but I'm glad in years since they've been able to showcase and celebrate the work they did. Also thanks for the shoutout ♥
Y’know that last statement you made about a small cast and crew coming together to make something they believed in and felt earnestly about reminded me of what the Fantastic Four themselves stand for. There’s something beautiful about that.

If you're written writing Superman, he's going to become an a****** no matter what because he has every power in the world and he has a God complex. That's where you stop writing a story with him. But anyway I'm going on a tangent. The point being is, I don't think everyone should be so critical of every movie that marvel makes. I think we should just love a movie because it really represents something in US fans. That's why I agree we should get this thing released. It would cost them. Nothing to do it. However, at the same time I've watched the same film and while there are some things that I like about the movie, there are absolutely things that I hate. I will agree this isn't the worst fantastic four film. The 2015 film sort of that is the f****** worst. The only thing I think I'm going to be upset about by the new standard of the new fantastic four movie. Is that two things? One it's set in a different reality which I can sort of kind of get behind though at the same time cuz if you explain it away as like oh they there are fantastic four from like years ago that they got shunted away to this reality where this one 's futuristic deal. I can get behind that however. But I cannot get behind. Is the blatant stupidity of saying that shall about the silver surfer? Because she is not in the comics at all. She is not maybe in the most recent comics but definitely not anything else. It is infuriating to that point. Here's hoping that the marvel reset that comes with secret wars manages to be able to go back and tell some of the stories we all want them to tell and cast some actors who probably might be better for certain roles
Somewhere out there there’s a universe where this movie was not only officially released but got completed to its best quality, and in that universe we have an all-timer classic.
If the actor for Doom doesn't like the way he sounds and wanted to redub it, maybe some dedicated fans can get him to rerecord the lines and edit them into the movies? A little work to smooth over a few VFX and this would be a nearly perfect film.
I'm actually impressed nobody tried to get a full remaster done that way. I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much so that money could be raised on indiegogo or some other place to pay the actor and some of the vfx/sfx workers.
The suits probably gonna be Ironman inspired because he's gonna be a Tony Variant and that character was so popular and they need him to come back and save the MCU by destroying it lol
@trickster80 i feel there's a non zero chance RDJ Doom isnt the only one we'll see, multiverse and all that I could even see them having RDJ Doom being more heroic aligned like the new Ultimate Doom while having a proper Doom as the actual villain Or maybe just me coping and hoping to have Iron Doom vs Dr Doom fight
The poor cast... If only things had changed by 2024. Movies and shows are still being shelved, cancelled or removed from streaming for contract loophole or tax write-off reasons...
Which there should be a federal law aganist doung .Hopefully WB undergoes that Federal Investigation Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro is calling for sooner rather than later.
it’s such a shame that even as early as the 90s not only comic book movies but multitudes of films can be seen as tax write offs or legal loopholes in the eyes of big corporations. There are thousands people sacrificing sleep, family time, and personal engagements to contribute something to this beautiful art form and they just get treated so inhumane and like children. It’s so horrible that it continues to this very day
I still stand by Roger Corman’s quote regarding million dollar movie budgets, where he says that a director should be capable of achieving their vision without having to spend over a million dollars and that there are better things we could be doing in society with that kind of money.
@@lanalan4157they don’t cost billions, but they do cost too much at times. Most “blockbuster” movies can nearly break even now. Though saying billions is a big exaggeration, movie makers really need to learn when the product is spending too much for to little in return.
Unironically (and tragically) the BEST fantastic 4 movie. Look its not great, there are a lot of flaws no doubt. But it really captures the goof and cheese of jack and stans stuff. Its genuinely fun and wholesome
2 things Thing 1: the story behind the cast and crew working hard to get this movie in theaters is the MOST fantastic four thing. A bunch of dudes stealing equipment in order to shoot for the stars and make their dreams come true. Yeah I need to watch this movie because it sounds like a great love letter to the FF Thing 2: The clips of CGI Johnny seemed to remind me of the first Fleischer Superman short. Idk someone can look at the footage side-by-side and see that they must have used that cartoon as reference material.
8:48 I’m glad someone finally spoke up about this 9:34 That has the same vibe as RedLetterMedia’s “it’s cool to SAY you’re a nerd but it’s still not cool to BE a nerd.”
The sheer passion from the crew is nothing short of extraordinary (Fantastic, even)! Having the actors doing their research and getting into the franchise they're adapting is one thing, but them having the unrelenting enthusiasm and belief in the value of the source material that were needed to forcefully finish the movie with money out of their own pockets when the producer bailed out is something on a whole other scale. This movie should be remembered as a legendary display of human perseverence, not as the laughingstock that it ended up as due to its deliberately sabotaged production.
After seeing this film in 1996, I pushed it so hard on my fan site. I really don't think the master copy exists anymore, but I really enjoyed the film. It's still funny to see my art on half of the bootlegs. It's shown here at the 32 minute mark.
I’ll admit I hadn’t really heard of the story behind the movie, and saw the title assuming about how it’d be a bunch of actors roped into a movie they didn’t want to make, but hearing it now as a story of passionate performers putting their all into a performance they believed would at least have been seen, only for it to be thrown away. It just feels bad man
Knowing that this movie is so sincere and loving to the source but it was shot behind the shed is so sad. I’ll definitely watch this, and remember the hard work that was put in it.
The kinda fucked up thing about the age difference between Sue and Reed in the movie is that in the original script, she was a fellow student of Reed's. Honestly don't know why they decided to age her back down. I know it's a nod to the Byrne run, but... yeah, could've just not done that.
I was the screenwriter (Craig Nevius). I don't know how you read my First Draft but thank you for recognizing the difference between it and the movie that was eventually shot (re: the age difference between Sue and Reed). It always felt weird to have Sue be that young. That was one of the few times that I felt it was best NOT to be faithful to the original comic book story. But I was not a producer so it was not up to me! Still, the director and cast did a "fantastic" job and I was pleased that the true blue nature of Marvel's first family made it from the comic book to Stan Lee's treatment to my script to the (bootlegged) screen. The unapologetic earnestness with which we made the movie is probably why it took on a life of its own (in spite of the budget and lack of special effects) and why it is now appreciated with thirty years of hindsight! Thanks again for your careful reading (and diligence finding the first draft).😎
While I hate the age gap between Reed and Sue, it should be noted that Reed started college at an early age, so Sue could have been either 12 or 13 and Reed could have been 16 years old when he first met Sue.
@@MarvNARKdude it doesn’t matter. Stop blowing people you don’t know. Some changes are important, nothing is perfect especially comics. At the end of the day it’s mainly for kids, you shouldn’t have a “hero” be a creep. Fix your morals.
Roger Corman is batshit bananas, and yet he has such an integral part to Hollywood the whole concept of Blockbusters might not have existed without him.
Ask if if they think there is a already established daredevil in the insomniac universe and if they think we willl see a DD game from insomniac one day
@kidanarchy2105 Which is actually pretty weird since it diverts conversation about the video's content. It probably would've made more sense to have people do that on Twitter or something.
This is my FAVORITE movie ever. Watched it everyday for the longest time. The documentary was also NUTS. I am so glad you covered this. I feel seen lmao
It's crazy how the team that started the Marvel Universe as we know it today doesn't usually do well in adaptations. Sometimes they are just a critical failure, sometimes they are just a money faliure, and sometimes it's both. Let's see what the world brings to Marvel's first family.
I don't know whether this films merits speak to its actual quality, or to the lack thereof from the other films. But it's still baffling to me this is the best and most faithful FF movie, after 30 years and 4 attempts. It's actually insane, given this movie was never even meant to be released in the first place. It's like a cruel joke or something.
You're helping me see this film in a brand new light, so thank you. I appreciate it, man. This video, for lack of a better word, is fantastic. It is a shame damn that the people involved were duped and kept in the dark.
That ItsJustSomeRandomGuy cameo genuinely made my day. My older brother and I would watch his content religiously back in like 2009. Happy Hour was the most insane shit 7 year old me had ever seen.
I just read a subreddit thread reminding me that one of the reasons why DC and Fantastic Four kept falling wasn't just executive meddling but because they didn't have their own independent studio yet like Marvel did. And now they do and I'm excited for this movie and the DCU.
They failed because they didn't have their own studio? What the hell does that even mean?? Just because marvel actually stopped pimping out their top characters doesn't mean they became successful because it said marvel on the door. Disney are the overlords of media now and the reason they run marvel in a hands off fashion and let Kevin feige steer the ship means they listened to what he said. Look, now it's turning into dud after money losing dud because they put marvel on the door.
I just want to say, you are my favorite UA-camr. I don’t watch much UA-cam or even watch much marvel or comics, but your videos are so entertaining and informative with your own twist. Don’t ever stop making videos ! Please and thankyou
Hey GM, thank you for capturing the emotions of all concerned in the making of the original F4 and promoting the idea of releasing this version with updated CGI, sound effects and looping for DOOM. Well done!
RORSCHACH AND DEADPOOL!! Justsomerandomguy introduced me to so many comic characters and defined their personality to me as a kid. I still come back to his videos time to time. Love that guy!
Watched a documentary on this, pretty sad for all of the actors to put in their all. Only for them to realize it was for nothing. They had to ignore some blatant red flags, because they were so optimistic in it.
I think the fantastic four should always wear these slightly baggy jumpsuits with textures over random ass lines. They aren’t superheroes trying to look cool or intimidating, they’re scientists and adventurers first and super heroes second
Ive been subscribed for a minute but usually end up forgetting to watch your videos and forgetting what kind of content you made. Watching this made me remember and realize I have a lot to catch up on.
For me, the absolute minimum a superhero costume needs is two colors, and a symbol. Superman: red, blue, letter S Fantastic four: white, blue, number 4 And so on…
So, the actors were the most invested in this production and deserve all the respect from the fans!!! They deserve a lot more respect than the director and production team should get. I can only imagine how infuriating it was to put so much heart and soul into this movie and its characters and look forward to the pay off, just for it to get shelved in the end.
A good reminder that the movies we watch aren’t a product of the studio heads but by the creatives and hard workers on set who put everything together.
I have new found respect for the people who worked on this movie. I hope it gets an official release some day. Everyone deserves it for the effort they have put in.
I watched a remastered version on YT yesterday before viewing this video. I knew nothing about the backstory and assumed Corman was doing the best he could with what he had. I didn't realize I was seeing a real-life version of "The Producers". I think your commentary was spot-on. Kudos to everyone involved in that project (except the diabolical German producer). The story within the story would make a good movie itself.
The thing that makes this the most True To Source material Fantastic Four movie is the fact that Ben transforms back and forth for unknown reasons. I also like the fact that Ben and Thing are played by two different actors and love how the last one is shorter than the first, it's like in season 1 of the 90s Fantastic Four cartoon and honestly a preferred switch to what people nowadays expect with Thing being bigger for no reason whatsoever than his human form. Either that or keep them the same height, plus a couple of inches because of the rocks
Im sad a B- movie version of Marvels 1st Family had a crew who loved, cared and did research on their rspective roles better than its compemporaries years later! I remember seeing the trailer for this movie on an old vhs so.e time ago and now, i got a bootleged tape vwrsion! Time to wipe off the duat and start watching! ❤ Thanks for the coverage my dude!😊
I’m going out on a limb and say that my favorite depiction of The Fantastic Four was from The Venture Brothers. Stephen Colbert was a perfect Mr. Fantastic.
The fact that the higher ups just left the crew hanging pisses me off. “Oh hey make this movie” “Oh hey it’s been a while but guess what this movie was never supposed to come out. Happy to waste your time”
I love when reviewers acknowledge the effort it takes to create something. It's so common to piss all over something and act like it's ok because whatever. Even just to sit down with a video editor and piece together 60+ minutes of footage, music, dialogue etc is a ton of work.
I was following this movie big time back in the 90's. I was so let down that it was not released. When I got online I was finally able to buy a bootleg copy. And I LOVED it. The movie had so much heart and soul. It was way better than any of the modern FF movies.
been listening to some of my favorite film's commentary tracks for the first time recently, and like in this video it's really striking to learn just how much goes into making a movie & how much the crew cares for a lotta this stuff! it's not right that some bigwig can just choose to not let stuff see the light of day when it's all wrapped up...
It’s really nice to see more people defend this movie. I bought this movie years ago on eBay, and while dated, it’s not only the best F4 movie, it’s one the best comic movies in general.
I think its also worth noting that the FF costumes are cleaely based on the Byrne run of the series, might be the first time a live action comic book movie adapted a specific era of costumes, rather than going for a general recognizable look
This is a fine example of why Xavier rules UA-cam!!! Always entertaining and educational, thanks for another banger!! Looking forward to the live stream on March 1st with the cast of Spider-Man 2 (the game)! CANDYMAN!!
Something like this happened with Blazing Saddles, the Mel Brooks film. The studio created a full television adaptation, that never aired. All so they could keep the sequel rights. And none of the staff, or even Mel Brooks himself, knew. All that is publicly available of it to my knowledge. Was an episode or a two. That were included on a DVD release of the film.
If I had a nickel for every time a studio rushed out a Fantastic Four movie to maintain movie rights, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice

I wouldn't mind visiting that universe.
@@somerandolad all of us
You cannot help and feel bad for this cast and what they been through. Some part of me hopes that they will make a cameo appearance in Secret Wars.
They deserve a cameo either in Secret Wars or the MCU Fantastic Four movie.
Alex-Hynes White should be the leader of The Council of Reeds
Even if they did nobody is going to know who they are, besides die hard marvel fans
ALL of me hopes this. In fact, I might actually watch Secret Wars if that were going to be the case....
loslakers530 no excuse to not try
If the actor for Doom doesn't like the way he sounds and wanted to redub it, maybe some dedicated fans can get him to rerecord the lines and edit them into the movies?
A little work to smooth over a few VFX and this would be a nearly perfect film.
I'm actually impressed nobody tried to get a full remaster done that way. I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much so that money could be raised on indiegogo or some other place to pay the actor and some of the vfx/sfx workers.
Rdj
The only movie of all time to even ATTEMPT Doctor Doom without trying to completely reinvent him
and now with RDJ it's probably never going to be contested
The suits probably gonna be Ironman inspired because he's gonna be a Tony Variant and that character was so popular and they need him to come back and save the MCU by destroying it lol
The curse continues.
@trickster80 i feel there's a non zero chance RDJ Doom isnt the only one we'll see, multiverse and all that
I could even see them having RDJ Doom being more heroic aligned like the new Ultimate Doom while having a proper Doom as the actual villain
Or maybe just me coping and hoping to have Iron Doom vs Dr Doom fight
I liked 2004
The poor cast...
If only things had changed by 2024. Movies and shows are still being shelved, cancelled or removed from streaming for contract loophole or tax write-off reasons...

That's the real horror: it's actually getting WORSE: movies swallow up MILLIONS, build up audience anticipation for years, and then get $#!+canned.
it’s such a shame that even as early as the 90s not only comic book movies but multitudes of films can be seen as tax write offs or legal loopholes in the eyes of big corporations. There are thousands people sacrificing sleep, family time, and personal engagements to contribute something to this beautiful art form and they just get treated so inhumane and like children. It’s so horrible that it continues to this very day
Hopefully a federal investigation into WBD is the catalyst to end this corrupt practice for good. It should officially be called Fraud.

I still stand by Roger Corman’s quote regarding million dollar movie budgets, where he says that a director should be capable of achieving their vision without having to spend over a million dollars and that there are better things we could be doing in society with that kind of money.
seems fair
Movie budgets dont cost billions...lol
@@lanalan4157they don’t cost billions, but they do cost too much at times. Most “blockbuster” movies can nearly break even now. Though saying billions is a big exaggeration, movie makers really need to learn when the product is spending too much for to little in return.

14:24 That fire effect is genuinely Amazing
Effects artists used to draw effects over the frame, you see it a lot in classic Tokusatsu and I really wish we'd get more of it today lol
I'm gonna be honest and say that effect looks better then 90% of modern effects.
Unironically (and tragically) the BEST fantastic 4 movie. Look its not great, there are a lot of flaws no doubt. But it really captures the goof and cheese of jack and stans stuff. Its genuinely fun and wholesome
2 things
Thing 1: the story behind the cast and crew working hard to get this movie in theaters is the MOST fantastic four thing. A bunch of dudes stealing equipment in order to shoot for the stars and make their dreams come true. Yeah I need to watch this movie because it sounds like a great love letter to the FF
Thing 2: The clips of CGI Johnny seemed to remind me of the first Fleischer Superman short. Idk someone can look at the footage side-by-side and see that they must have used that cartoon as reference material.
"Footage Unrelated" yet describes how Madame Web went.
“That’s The Joke”
-McBain
That…. That’s the joke
That Stan Lee impression was spot on!
The Human Torch getting hit by the energy beam is rotoscoped from the first Fleischer Superman cartoon.
8:48 I’m glad someone finally spoke up about this
9:34 That has the same vibe as RedLetterMedia’s “it’s cool to SAY you’re a nerd but it’s still not cool to BE a nerd.”
Wow I'm so glad you made this video. I had no idea the actors were lied to. I can't imagine that kind of betrayal.
They even did a comic con
I bought one of those autographs for my little brother. Thanks for that mr Mendoza
Thank you! It really helps me out!
Honestly, this needs more views and attention. Not only for the true passion but the tragedy of it being a trick to the vast and crew.
God I never knew all this behind the scene issues that this movie had I feel really bad for the cast and crew that were lied to
And of course avi arad was involved somehow screw that guy
I’ll admit I hadn’t really heard of the story behind the movie, and saw the title assuming about how it’d be a bunch of actors roped into a movie they didn’t want to make, but hearing it now as a story of passionate performers putting their all into a performance they believed would at least have been seen, only for it to be thrown away. It just feels bad man
Sony: We have the most pathetic attempts at keeping our movie rights with movies like Morbius and Madame Web.
Fox: Bet.
Knowing that this movie is so sincere and loving to the source but it was shot behind the shed is so sad. I’ll definitely watch this, and remember the hard work that was put in it.
Thank goodness for a dubbing company employee who kept there print.
The chills I got from ItsJustSomeRandomGuy as Stan.....
Because of its low budget, this movie is technically a tokusatsu movie
These are always so funny to me
Starro is technically a Kaiju
The Fantastic Four is technically a tokusatsu
Sins Past is technically NTR
It's that way in the comics too. Because if they weren't to do that it would be stupid

This is my FAVORITE movie ever. Watched it everyday for the longest time. The documentary was also NUTS. I am so glad you covered this. I feel seen lmao
I haven't seen the movie and I'm not a fan of the Fantastic Four but hearing all that effort the cast and crew went through, hurt
Especially with the fact the movie was never actually going to be released
I remember when Owen Likes Comics referenced the existence of this video , I was very confused
Im so glad you're cool and reasonable, seeing the care and attention they tried to put into the film so I appreciate that so much.
It's crazy how the team that started the Marvel Universe as we know it today doesn't usually do well in adaptations. Sometimes they are just a critical failure, sometimes they are just a money faliure, and sometimes it's both. Let's see what the world brings to Marvel's first family.
I have given up any expectations of any future marvel movie to be good
Holy shit, you gor the opportunity to chat with the whole cast of Spider-Man 2, that's awesome

Although the best Ben Grimm is still Michael Chitklis.

I'm surprised how emotional the video made me, you really captured the beauty in the passion the cast and crew had for this doomed film.
@@gamedad7336it’s losing money because the people they hire to make the movies act like they’re “above” the source material

This feels such a sad story. Showing effort and love beats throwing money and thinking "oh this will make a profit"

Well done!
Warms my heart how passionate the cast and crew were about this movie, and breaks it how the producers treated them
RORSCHACH AND DEADPOOL!!
Rest in peace Roger Corman.
Hearing ItsJustSomeRandomGuy sent me straight back to 2007
Joseph Culp was perfect casting. The guy just LOOKS and carries himself like Victor Von Doom.
For me, the absolute minimum a superhero costume needs is two colors, and a symbol.
Superman: red, blue, letter S
Fantastic four: white, blue, number 4
And so on…
I was 100% secretly hoping they’d show up in Deadpool and Wolverine. The cast deserves recognition for their work.
Question for Tony Todd:
What is it like playing such a menacing villain. He’s done it for Zoom on the Flash and now Venom. What was the difference?
So, the actors were the most invested in this production and deserve all the respect from the fans!!! They deserve a lot more respect than the director and production team should get. I can only imagine how infuriating it was to put so much heart and soul into this movie and its characters and look forward to the pay off, just for it to get shelved in the end.
This was a very fascinating story of a movie that almost became lost media.
A good reminder that the movies we watch aren’t a product of the studio heads but by the creatives and hard workers on set who put everything together.
THANKYOU for mentioning a brief mention of Stargirl! That show was beautifully made and it deserved so much more.
Finally. Xavier finally uploads another video after so many years.
dear lord, i should give this film a chance

I have new found respect for the people who worked on this movie. I hope it gets an official release some day. Everyone deserves it for the effort they have put in.
These people hustled for this movie to be seen like some true heroes.
How fitting, heroes playing heroes on screen.
Pleasant surprise seeing Michael Bailey Smith! He played Belthazar, Shax, and the Grimlocks on Charmed
“Oh hey make this movie”
“Oh hey it’s been a while but guess what this movie was never supposed to come out. Happy to waste your time”
Question for the stream.
"When Venom turned Mary Jane, did anyone else think of what I thought? (She was going down behind a table)"
I love when reviewers acknowledge the effort it takes to create something. It's so common to piss all over something and act like it's ok because whatever.
Even just to sit down with a video editor and piece together 60+ minutes of footage, music, dialogue etc is a ton of work.
19:10 everytime I rewatch this scene, my cynical heart always melts
If only the Fantastic Four have more diverse costumes, it be perfect so that The Thing does not feel left out on being the only one in unique style
Always a good day when Godzilla uploads
I was following this movie big time back in the 90's. I was so let down that it was not released. When I got online I was finally able to buy a bootleg copy. And I LOVED it. The movie had so much heart and soul. It was way better than any of the modern FF movies.

been listening to some of my favorite film's commentary tracks for the first time recently, and like in this video it's really striking to learn just how much goes into making a movie & how much the crew cares for a lotta this stuff! it's not right that some bigwig can just choose to not let stuff see the light of day when it's all wrapped up...
This gotta be one of the most tragic developments I think I've ever learned about
I like how The Human Torch Laser scene borrows from the 40's animated Superman shorts.
I stumbled across it on UA-cam, listened to it as I worked at me computer all day, and had to watch it when I got home. I'm glad I did. Great job guy.
Wow this is crazy man !! Great video bro
