Thanks for answering my question! I'll try anotger pump and check the pressure again. I hope I've not done any damage because I've been ridding some black diamonds with it recently haha. LBS here i come!
Doddy.. It doesn't add loads of tension.. If the clutch is in or not, the spring offers the tension. What it does do, is add loads of rotational friction on the axle. But the stationary tension is the same with or without clutch,
Regarding the question about wrist pain - I found that having a physical (busy hands) job and practicing bunny hops and manuals to and from work consistently leads to tendinitis from pulling the bar up and pushing it forward. I ride flats and have watched the relevant videos by GMBN, Phil, Seth, and others, yet I have no idea what is 'wrong' about my technique. If someone could explain how to manual or hop without pulling and pushing (in the case of a hop) on the bars I would be surprised. You can't help but max out your arms if following the advice to not pull from the arms - they stretch out as your body moves back and max to keep the wheel straight, if I understand correctly. My random internet guy advice for those guys is take a break from practicing those moves and focus on stoppies or cornering for a while, then practice manuals and hops sparingly. I also wonder if some of us viewers on older bikes have to pull harder due to longer chain-stays on older or budget bikes. I am 5'10" tall and could have gone with either a Medium or Large frame, I chose Large for stability and comfort on longer rides, so I also wonder if doing so limited my capacity to manual easily. I still can manual, but the force involved is pretty extreme compared to watching you guys.
Regarding 2x chainguides, e-thirteen also makes an excellent option, the trs dual. I preferred it over the mrp, the shark fin eliminated chain drops from the top of the chainring. It is also easier to mount with a bashguard on a formerly 3x drivetrain, since it plays well with the e-thirteen bash.
That wrist issue is so annoying... When I first learned to bunnyhop I (apparently) did it wrong in terms of the grip on my bars, and at some point my wrists got screwed up so badly I couldn't ride properly (or apply power through my hands in general) for another 2 weeks, and even now, 6 months later, I still feel the pain in my right wrist if I twist it a lot. Be careful with those ligaments of yours...
Couldn't the air pressure in the shock be different than manufacturers weight recommendation due to the suspension design also? Like say a Horst link I would assume put a different amount of pressure on a shock than a single pivot like and orange since the rear triangle is pushing directly into the shock? Same on a fork that a steeper head angle changes your pressure on the fork and alters recommended for weight pressure.
Great show. Can you guys discuss what you think the bike industry will look like in ten years do to the direct to consumer brands? Will we see more people on mountain bikes do to a lower cost of entry?
EVOL DPS: impossible to disconnect shock pump without loosing lots of air, 15-25PSI...on 2 diff. pumps, one having "no leak " valve. I am starting to think shock valve itself is shot. Thoughts ?
I just bought a 2016 Kona Precept 120. When I sit on it the factory rear shock bottoms out! I’ve put 120psi with my milwaukee 12v compressor, I don’t own an air shock pump. The shock maximum is 200psi. In the back of my mind I’m thinking the shock is blown. I’m not sure if it can be rebuilt, I haven’t seen any rebuild kits. I weigh in at 169lbs, I’m not sure if that matters with a 120mm travel Kona stock shock.
I think is great that you are getting comfortable enough to stop humoring the stupid questions. Martyn used to control his facial expressions and act like some of the most ridiculous questions had merit. Now he is just like, "did you really just ask that...you moron"
John Ferguson seriously. So many good questions that are asked and oftentimes the dumbest ones get on the show. If the question can easily be answered by Google, there's no point. These guys are here to answer the complex opinionated questions that aren't simple. And all the questions that go, "I've got $750, what bike will be the best option for me and fit the best" fucking come on. Maybe go try some bikes, like anyone can just randomly answer that lmao.
The only way you’ll ever do it, is if you just do it. No one can make you do it. Only you can decide to commit to doing the drop. Drops are very simple. They’re not like jumps where many things can go wrong. Drops are practically fool proof
I do understand that bigger disks will improve braking and be better at dissipating heat. But do you really notice a big difference going from a 160 to a 180 mm rotor? And why do the biggest disk have a diameter (203mm) and not an even number like 160, 180 and so on?
GCN said there's a collaboration coming up with GMBN, where you show them how to corner. Sure next week Scotty will drop by and show them how to pedal, too.
Hey guys I just bought a new bike and the the front shock goes down about 1/4 of the way and then seems to hit the bottom and I need to put a lot of more pressure for it to go further
How do I now what rebuild kit I need for my shocks mine are fox talon 32 140mm 32mm shaft I have a lot of oil on shaft after I ride. They are older maybe 8 years old not sure
1-2m long? You'll need to hit a 43.7kph escape speed from the takeoff. I hope you have some sophisticated equipment for measuring speed, touch under and you're dead, touch over..your dead.
#askgmbn Could you guys do more videos about places to ride? The channel is somewhat focused on tech and skills. It would be refreshing to see videos about trail centres and epic rides on natural trails especially in the Uk, you have great scenery! Still really enjoy the channel though.
#askgmbn My Monarch R rear shock (2016) rebound dial only turns one way i wasn't aware and now its stuck on full speed rebound :( any ideas on something i can do at home?? Thanks!
Yeah Good idea, i would do a service but i don't think im confident enough to take it apart! i was hoping that there was a quick fix for it :( looks like a mechanic is my only option XD
#askgmbn i ride a Cube hard tail and I'm looking to upgrade to a dropper post but do not have internal routing, would you be able to recommend any externally routed dropper posts with a diameter of 27.2 mm
Ks Exaform comes in 27.2mm for 100mm drop at $90. Pretty sure the KS eTen also comes in 27.2mm, more around $120. Just go search Google dude, "dropper post 27.2 external" that will show you everything you need.
#aksgmbn I want to take the air sleeve off my shock to put in volume spacers however am turning it the right way and can’t get it off. Is there a tool or method to undo it?
Where on the shock is the ring. My shock is an x-fusion o2rl, a rather lower end shock but I do know for sure that it can be opened up and can take volume spacers. I dont think this shock has any sort of ring.
#askgmbn I am considering either building a fully rigid 29er or a Hardtail 29er. How does a carbon rigid fork compare to a low to mid-range suspension fork?
I got a new bike 2 months ago. Mostly ride to work and some trail riding on the weekends. I can't get the shifting smooth on every gear on my 1x10 sram X7 derailleur. When I adjust it for one gear there is always another one that is slightly out of alignment. #askgmbn
Stefan Dirks your derailleur hangar is probably bent. Or your cables have too much friction. If you've indexed the gears properly then start looking at other culprits.
#askgmbn Is it better to run the right derailleur cable down the right side of the frame or the left side of the frame, or does it make no difference? My current bike has the right derailleur cable running down the right side of the frame and the right brake crossing over the frame to the left side (U.S bike, so the right hand does the rear brake and rear derailleur).
I have disc brakes and when I tighten my wheel, the wheel moves and therefore the brakes rub. I can't get the wheel to stay centred unless my quick release is very loose. Once I tighten it, it moves. What do you think is the problem? #askgmbn
#askgmbn I do downhill on a 2017 kona precept 150 and I have got a sponsorship with Renthal and was wonder if I should put some motocross bike bars with bar pad would it be worth it
Is it time for a new Front Shock Suspension Fork Blown if it's Barely moving only when it hits contact? I cant even push down on it with my hands not when I get on the bike, by the way I have a GIANT REVEL 29 Inch Varient 2 made in 2017.
#askgmbn I think my damper on my fork is blown. The fork returns to full travel so fast that it makes this loud clanking sound. How do i diagnose what is wrong?
#askgmbn Just bought a used downhill bike with a marzocchi 888 bomber rv, I noticed the the fork had a lot of stiction so I gave it a full service (took it apart cleand it, put on new grease and put in new oil 5w inseted of 7,5). But it still have a lot of stiction, any tips?
Thomas Mclaughlin not much you can do... pull it apart and grease it up but that won't last long... I upgraded one like that with a used fork off ebay...but look close at pics to make sure the stanchions aren't scratched
Thomas Mclaughlin haha it always is. I'm on an XCT myself currently but having never tried a better fork, I've been getting along fine with it. Upgrade is your best option. Check into Suntour Epixon (~$200) and Rockshox Recon (~$250) on eBay. Both are 1-1/8" straight steerer tube which you'll need. Another option is the mannitou markhor, pretty much made just for folks still using non tapered steerer tube forks. Been thinking about upgrading my fork for a while haha. All these options give you an air fork with rebound adjust and the slightest bit of compression damping to lockout.
#askgmbn I'm starting to do some slightly bigger jumps now, but I keep finding, on landing, my left foot slips off (I ride flats), and my shins are getting destroyed. Any advice to help keep that foot on?!
Sounds like your legs are getting a little tight in the air. Stay relaxed especially when you first go off the lip. Also get shin guards immediately!! I use cheap Adidas shin guards for soccer/football and they work great.
#askgmbn Are you able as a beginner to wheelie with flat pedals and shoes? I can't seem to do it every single time I try. I lean back, time my pedal stroke and pull up and try lock my arms. I have watched countless videos, and still can't get it. Help
#askgmbn I got a new bike in June and I've noticed lately that there is a pretty decent dead zone in my brakes (almost half the lever travel), is that a sign I should be bleeding them?
To many factors. How many miles do you ride and in what conditions? Best way to know is by using a chain wear guage. You should be able to pick one up for under $10.00.
when, it breaks lol.........measure it with a ruler and you'll know if it's stretched if it is it's wrecking the cassette, pulleys and chainring......snapping a chain on a climb is not my most fun moment.
#askgmbn I am going to replace my wheels, and I dont know should I buy just the rims or rims, hubs and spokes. Do better hubs and spokes contribute to wheel strength or is it just in the rims?
Gmbn help . I transfer my GT to 1x and my chain skipping on the smalest cogs. Got new 10speed sram chain new 11-42 sunrace cassete and new 36T one up chainring. And its run by 10 speed deore derailleur with clutch. Ive checked chain line gear setup limit screws and everything else what's possible. My local bike shop is out of ideas as well . Please help
You could stand on the chainstay and thereby manual a Fixie.
Marlon Profuß r u could take of the chain
you can manual a fixie (did it myself) rested my knee on the saddle
Doddy is a guru on MTB information, His insight and tips are spot on. You are a national treasure to our nation of MTB DIY'ers. :)
Thanks for answering my question! I'll try anotger pump and check the pressure again. I hope I've not done any damage because I've been ridding some black diamonds with it recently haha. LBS here i come!
#askgmbn Can you manual a unicycle?
Leo Graham xDD
Leo Graham XD
haha but no... they're fixed I think
No
Leo Graham XD
I like his smirk when he read "my friends wrist hurts too"
The only thing I can manual is a unicycle.
But you have to pedal a uni
#askgmbn How long dose it take doddy to do his hair before the show. And will he shave his head for charity?
Does
Good stuff guys, enjoying the show.
Doddy.. It doesn't add loads of tension.. If the clutch is in or not, the spring offers the tension. What it does do, is add loads of rotational friction on the axle. But the stationary tension is the same with or without clutch,
I had a set of Hope XC4 brakes. They used to squeal like a banshee, and a banshee that has stepped on a Lego brick when they were wet.
Regarding the question about wrist pain - I found that having a physical (busy hands) job and practicing bunny hops and manuals to and from work consistently leads to tendinitis from pulling the bar up and pushing it forward. Do you think its better to have extra weight on the bike or in a backpack? Water bottle, cage, multitool, tube, pump etc
Thank you so much for answering my question. It was because of your channel I just got into mountain biking
I've managed to drop a chain, with a RF narrow wide chainring, a clutch mech and a chainguide.
Did martin have to put anything over the sharpie on his helmet to stop it from coming off?
Buy any rear shocks made by rockshox an it comes pre blown or it leaks oil an air.
That wrist issue is so annoying...

Doddy's eyes look so wasted every shot
Can you guys do a video on the correct technique to jump a hardtail
Sweet video guys 👊
you could manual a fixie by taking your feet off the pedals

Like say a Horst link I would assume put a different amount of pressure on a shock than a single pivot like and orange since the rear triangle is pushing directly into the shock?

Ask GMBN can u make a video about how to change the fork bushing.my fox40 (old version)has some play between the lower and the stantion
You could manual a fixie if you stand up on the seat.
Doddy is very clever isn’t he. First question so much knowledge
I’m a downhill racer and wondering what muscle groups to workout over winter while I’m not riding as much?
When you bounce your suspension does it mean it's shot if it goes down and up again less than before or does that mean the rebound is to low
#askgmbn what is the slope and y-intercept of this equation
y = 3x + 7
John Galvan ez. Y intercept is 7 and the slope is 3
Y=mx+c
Great show.

Possibility for the first question on rear shock: Rebuild your shock with a factory rebuild seal kit and see how it works then! It costs $16.00.
Hey guys, so I've been riding my local trails lately and I am always so afraid of this drop-off. Any tips on how I may be able to overcome this fear?
The only way you’ll ever do it, is if you just do it. No one can make you do it. Only you can decide to commit to doing the drop. Drops are very simple. They’re not like jumps where many things can go wrong. Drops are practically fool proof

If I were to buy a plus sized tire bike with 2.8 tires (Raleigh Tokul 3), could I switch it to maybe a 2.25-2.4 tire and it still work fine?
is the ask shed the same as the dirtshed ?
#askgmbn will pumping my air fork up with a regular hand/foot pump damage my fork or will it just not reach the required pressure?
A dab of copper grease on the back of the pads fixes brake squeaks. Same with cars and motorbikes. I've never had squeaky brakes since learning.
So if you stand on the seat and let the pedals spin then could that count
Air keeps coming out my rare suspension. How can i fix it?? Or do i have to buy a new one ?
Odhran Ryan I think you have to buy new one...
It can be serviced..new seals
No just service it with a new seal kit. They're cheap. Watch this.

How is the gt sanction pro for riding uphill compared to a Specialized Enduro?
amazing job guys
A stand up wheelie can also be called a catwalk!
#askgmbn Guys, how to calculate the speed to jump over the gap? I mean if the gap is 1-2 meter long, how to calculate perfect landing line?
you dont just find someone who has done it and go the same speed as him/her
1-2m long? You'll need to hit a 43.7kph escape speed from the takeoff. I hope you have some sophisticated equipment for measuring speed, touch under and you're dead, touch over..your dead.
MykeyboardIsBroken send it to flat, and gradually go slower.
Dylan Hartridge dude are you insane! Every one knows it’s 43.8 are you trying to kill the man!
hit it perfect.....shit, you're dead!
Would it be fine to run my Rocket Ron Schwalbe tyres on 14 PSI? Or do I need to go tubeless

#aksgmbn I want to take the air sleeve off my shock to put in volume spacers however am turning it the right way and can’t get it off. Is there a tool or method to undo it?
Sebastian Ramos-Roux mine has a ring u have to pop off first
Where on the shock is the ring. My shock is an x-fusion o2rl, a rather lower end shock but I do know for sure that it can be opened up and can take volume spacers. I dont think this shock has any sort of ring.
Sebastian Ramos-Roux Look to pdf about this model in google
Sebastian Ramos-Roux yea I don't know anything about yours... was just suggesting but if you don't see one.....
Your thoughts on the new pinion gearbox?
#AskGMBN If I should be heel down when descending, should I be toe down on steep ascents when not peddling- such as a wall ride or a quarter pipe?
Would you be able to use goggles with a lower end trail helmet?? Would love some help.
#askgmbn I am considering either building a fully rigid 29er or a Hardtail 29er. How does a carbon rigid fork compare to a low to mid-range suspension fork?
Depends on what you want to ride! If you want to do small drops and jumps, you need a sus fork!
What's with the background high pitch noise? anyway, great videos. Would you make a video about servicing hubs?
You should make a video on how to jump a double
What if the chain on your fixie breakes
I got a new bike 2 months ago. Mostly ride to work and some trail riding on the weekends. I can't get the shifting smooth on every gear on my 1x10 sram X7 derailleur. When I adjust it for one gear there is always another one that is slightly out of alignment. #askgmbn

I have disc brakes and when I tighten my wheel, the wheel moves and therefore the brakes rub. I can't get the wheel to stay centred unless my quick release is very loose. Once I tighten it, it moves. What do you think is the problem? #askgmbn
Tighten your wheels fully and then adjust your brakes that should work
#askgmbn I do downhill on a 2017 kona precept 150 and I have got a sponsorship with Renthal and was wonder if I should put some motocross bike bars with bar pad would it be worth it
So you could backwards manual a fixed gear?? Interesting
Can you change a 3 by 8 bike to one single speed
As all ways very informative great show guys , staying upright. You Yangs Australia 👀
#askgmbn Just bought a used downhill bike with a marzocchi 888 bomber rv, I noticed the the fork had a lot of stiction so I gave it a full service (took it apart cleand it, put on new grease and put in new oil 5w inseted of 7,5). But it still have a lot of stiction, any tips?
can Blake ride a hardtail at Rampage?!?
#askgmbn my suspension fork tops out violently every time I pull up or do manuals I have a low end coil fork with no rebound damping any help
Thomas Mclaughlin not much you can do... pull it apart and grease it up but that won't last long... I upgraded one like that with a used fork off ebay...but look close at pics to make sure the stanchions aren't scratched
Trail Work thank you will search eBay
Out of curiosity, what fork? Guessing 50% chance it's a Suntour XCT or XCM..
Dylan Hartridge it’s a suntour xcm
Thomas Mclaughlin haha it always is. I'm on an XCT myself currently but having never tried a better fork, I've been getting along fine with it. Upgrade is your best option. Check into Suntour Epixon (~$200) and Rockshox Recon (~$250) on eBay. Both are 1-1/8" straight steerer tube which you'll need. I have a sound like leaking air and a squealing sound by my shock and my brakes are good so that's not it any suggestions ?
Why does my coil shocks stiffen up in the winter
How do I fix a front fork if it dosent work anymore
#askgmbn do trials riders wear clips or flats or does it depend on personal preference
Pooh Bear it’s up to you but I’d recommend flats
#askgmbn I'm starting to do some slightly bigger jumps now, but I keep finding, on landing, my left foot slips off (I ride flats), and my shins are getting destroyed. Any advice to help keep that foot on?!

To many factors. How many miles do you ride and in what conditions? Best way to know is by using a chain wear guage. You should be able to pick one up for under $10.00.
