Fuck 'em, they want to recreate Halo's situation with The Witcher? Let 'em. They will fail and they will bitch and moan about how it's the fan's fault, but Canvill's career will remain intact without that blemish on his resume, and the fans will move on as well. The freak shows over at Netflix? Not so much.

About Sapkowski and him not liking the games. There was 2 main issues for him.
1: Games got really popular and books weren't known well enough as source material. When he sold rights to CDPR, he thought it will be some extra cash for him but didn't expect anything big.
2: Money. Like I mentioned, he didn't think much about game market and sold rights for really cheap. When game series became huge success, he wanted more money. He even tried to sue but i don't think he got anywhere. He sold right for flat amount and missed out on major pay check. He was very salty about it and was hating on the games since then.

    • @MrJsatrzab

He didnt belive in games - in general(he believes that games are for stupid children), so when CDPR offered him % fee, he declined and sold the rights for equivalent of few thousand USD - flat. When games became money making hit, he sue for more money, and cut a deal with CDPR (ammount that he got was not disclosed - but it was a lot).
It's also truth that he dissliked the games because in US and other western countries there was a lot of missconception which medium was first - there was republication of books with game characters on covers which added to that misconception.

It says a lot that Cavill, a hardcore fan of the books and games and your leading star, quits the series. This is all the show runners fault. If they weren’t so boneheaded in hating the source material and adapting it he would have stayed. Let’s face it; the reason why the show got traction from normies to begin with is because of Henry. He’s a good actor. But they wasted him. Personally Henry is better off without the show. I feel bad for Liam. He’s going to be blamed if the series fails after Henry’s departure. And let this be a lesson to Hollywood out there. Stop hating the source material. You don’t have to be fans but at least respect the material FFS.

It's not just work, it's artistic work. You definitely do have to be a fan if you're going to do anything resembling a good job.
When actors don't even know an IP and they get offered a role, that's fine. It's then the actor's job to familiarize themselves and either find enough to love there or reject the proposal. If a writer is working on an IP they don't love, something is very very wrong.

I wouldn’t mind if Hollywood adapted things I like into movies or whatever if they would just make faithful adaptations. Not even to the letter, I’m talking like the Lord of the Rings movies here. Like yeah, it’s not a note for note 100% accurate version of the books, but it’s evident that not only did they understand what people love about Middle Earth, they went very far out of their way to make it an experience that anyone would like, whether you’ve read the books or not. They were fans and they wanted other people to love the thing they love.
It seems like the opposite is true now: Hollywood takes something that people love but they hate, and try to make it into something they like while spitting on the people who made that property successful in the first place. That Velma trailer was the perfect example, there’s just so much outright derision toward the people who already liked the thing you’re changing. If there was just a little more respect to the fans, maybe people would feel less disrespected by all of this. I’m at the point now where anytime I find out that anything I like is getting an adaptation into a film or a show, my only response is “Oh no” and that’s honestly really sad, because it wasn’t always that way 😞

Doing an adaptation is always an egocheck for the authors and an imagination test and tastecheck for the showrunner.
A lot of authors unrighfully think they can do better or that they want to use every opportunity to exploit the work of better people to push in their „work“ and a lot of showrunners lack the feeling for design or staging scenes and fail because their horizon is too small to comprehend how bad their work is.
I think especially netflix and amazon proves time and time again that their picture of good fantasy is just some thrown together clichees bound together in a setting which mirrors childfriendly fairytale stories more than a realistic setting with inner logic and plausible human behavior and plausible civilization/cultural/political structurs.
And even worse in addition they are easily willing to shit on established lore or inner logic to force in modern political messages which most likely have no place under those fictional circumstances
You can do this btw even tho political propaganda (for whatever) is not to my likes but with this mindset please stick to familyfriendly franchises maybe animated series but stay away from more complex franchises which demand way more inner logic and feeling for taste

The love and passion for the myths of Tolkien was put into that work and we all felt it and loved it. In todays show you have a team that was built around political agendas and with the quote "it should reflect the world we live in today". This shows you how far away from LOTR this is. Also they focused WAY too much on Yennefer and her backstory, which is almost completely irrelevant to the main plot of the story. Imagine how much better it would have been if instead of focusing on Yennefer's backstory they focused on Geralt's childhood training as a Witcher and going through the Trial of the Grasses. I think it's less that Superman is boring and more that he is a very very hard character to write because the point of him is that he's _that_ unreachable high standard people aspire to and that requires a fundamentally different writing than just "He punch badguy, he wins." I think you need the emotional maturity and honesty to be able to reach for that abstract standards and turn them into stories capable of moving people. Something I have doubt with the immaturity of American TV writers.

Season 1 was a reasonably faithful adaptation of some of the short stories, although almost all of the Yennefer arc was made up by the writers, inferred from minor references in the books. I really enjoyed Season 1 as someone new to The Witcher and it inspired me to read the books.
Episode 1 of Season 2 was another reasonably faithful adaptation of another short story but from there on it really had very little to do with the story in the books except for very loose ties to certain events and settings. I could only get through 6 episodes before giving up on it as more and more it just didn't feel like The Witcher anymore.
I think most fans just want a faithful adaptation, as you said they can make changes where necessary but keep to the core story, there's a reason a lot of these properties are popular and to willingly tamper with them is just bonkers.
Btw The Cable Guy was awesome, glad I completely missed whatever BS controversy there was about that.

The problem with the Studios seem to be that the Studio execs want profits so they target the most popular IPs. Then these are given to writers and marketing teams. The marketing teams tend to fill it up with the most popular words ideas of the day to design the marketing of the product. The writers/directors who want a lot of money work on these projects, but they have no love for the source material. They just want to make money and feel like they are effectively being made to work on something they either don't care for or hold disdain for (kind of like writing a compulsory class assignment on a subject or topic you hate). So they try to either fix/update the story or writer their fanfics that they try to pass off as the better version of the original. And this is what leads to the situation of writers hating the very IPs that make them rich. It also shows why they seem to hold such disdain for the fans of the source material, as far as they are concerned it is the fans' fault for making the source material (which they look down upon) so popular in the first place thus *_forcing_* them to work on it.
