The protag of forspoken had no personal ethics or rules she only cared about her self until the final moment she has a sudden unearned change of heart.
It's not a surprise really. Pretty much anytime a character is a "minority" nowadays you can guarantee they'll be devoid of character development, morales and ethics, a personality that draws you in, and just about every metric that would make you like a character.
They think being black is a personality by itself or something, it's bizarre.
@@beeman4266 And it's such a shame. You can have amazing black characters in games like Lee from Walking dead or Barret from FF7. Not once in my time playing Walking Dead did I ever feel like I didn't enjoy playing as Lee. While morally ambiguous(you start with him in a copcar for something he's done) at least in my playthrough he pulled through, was a great guy and died a hero.
I guess nowadays people just write black people as always perfect even if they have no ethical compass whatsoever because go black power or something?

In the opening scene of the game, she's a judge's decision away from spending 20+ years in prison from her third strike for felony theft.
The judge gives her a break, assigning her public service instead, and what does she do that SAME NIGHT? Decides to steal a shiny looking, fancy golden bracelet!
Then, the moment she gets out of jail in fantasy land, what's the first thing she does? She steals an apple!
She mean and downright bitchy to basically everyone. She's an unrepentant felon. Her only redeeming traits, as far as I can tell, is she has a soft spot in her heart for little girls and cats!
Now, you can argue that she had a tough life, and sure, that's true, but plenty of kids go through foster care without ending up hardened criminals! And yeah, her arrest record had 5 or 6 misdemeanor arrests, and she had no other job, so the several thousand dollars she had she made through theft, so its not like those were her ONLY crimes!
Massively unlikable MC, and the graphics during boss fights are trash = no thanks from me.
She seems like the person you want to help, but they will just steal your stuff when you turn your back.

Frey is the type of girl that hears someone warning her not to stand near a jet engine because its dangerous and she does it anyway because she is a strong independent woman that breaks oppression by not letting people tell her what to do.

Making your mc uninterested in this crazy fantasy world they get to is such a mistake. She had the isekai ingredients in having a shitty life with no direction. Why oh why does she then actively not want to explore this second chance she's given? She'd be a 100% relatable character if she was portrayed right.

She is one of the worst isekai protagonist I've read/saw, and I read lots of trashy isekai. At least bad isekai still have fanservice, who know who their target audience are.

That's not even the problem. In this setting her lack of care about this fantasy world is completely understandable. She enters the new world, spends around 10 minutes in it and suddenly she almost gets killed 3 times, then she arrives in an abandoned city, sleeps, awakens to a corruptive miasma, then she has to fight a fricking dragon. TWICE. The she just dropped off at a city, she gets imprisoned, then she has to wander the already destroyed and corrupted landscape of the world. Why on earth would she want to stay? For the people she met a few minutes ago, and when half of them wanted to kill or imprison her?
The problem is the setting itself. Even in the cheapest isekai they make the world something to wish for, magical locations, beautiful and lively cities, adventurers, beautiful ladies, etc. I this game the world is bleak, on the verge of destruction and overall not a place anyone would want to live in. You can make it so, that there is a certain threat to the world and out hero is the only one that can stop the destruction, but you still have to make the world worth saving, by showing off its values and beauty. But here we enter an already destroyed world, we don't know how the world looked before, if it was nice or peaceful, etc., we just suddenly need to save it, because we are special.
The problem is not her reaction and lack of interest towards the world, but the world they created itself.
@@meraketh I think it just depends on your personality.. I would be totally stoked to be there, even with a shitty setting.. because I have magic. Better yourself.. become the strongest... then change the setting to your liking. :D Especially if the world you're coming from has nothing for you.
I love how people defend her character as "people with that kind of past usually are like that" or "she had a hard life, it is only normal that she behaves that way" well that may be, but then they just shouldn't have made her this way to begin with.
And it plays into a stereotype. ... No wait. 2 stereotypes.

She got plunked into a zombie hellscape. Got her ass beat by guards, imprisoned, and then forced to kill what are essentially godesses to save the same people who shunned her and called her a demon. She gradually becomes more attached to the people of that world and then fights to save them.
Being super nice and happy go lucky from the start of the game would have been God awful writing if this was meant to represent a real person.

So, another piece of media where the writers thought they would get praise if they made a one dimensional "girlboss" character who respects nobody, isn't interested in anything, is obnoxious all the time, has no clear motives that would be relatable, and still somehow for no apparent reason makes all the right calls to be the hero of the story, because the script requires it.
Hmm, I saw the 3 hour playthrough and it wasn't nearly that bad. If anything it just reminded me of Inquisition and made me want to play that.
Fascinating isn’t it? It’s so bizarre, I would love to talk to whoever wrote this pile of the worst human traits and called it a character, that we supposed to like? Or is it just incompetence? But that would be the equivalent of me throwing a bucket of paint at wall and saying “job done, they’ll love it!”, unbelievable.

The character is what an Instagram Queen thinks a badass version of herself would be, and that's how the writing comes across, you can see a narcissistic self obsessed selfish woman enjoying this game as thats what the character is, she arrives on a Foreign world and just starts killing wildlife and people that inconvenience her, then celebrates their demise, her interaction with characters is all about her problems and her getting home at their expense, she basically says to her friend who's father just died 'I don't care about you or your problems I just care about me getting home'. The hero narrative usually consist of 'I'll fix your problems then we'll address mine' this gives you the feeling of being a selfless Hero, nobody want to play a fantasy game where you are an unlikeable selfish person!

It's what I call "Hollywood wine mom writing". People who've never been out of their bubbles and have no life experiences, so they think their little corner of the world is the experience for everyone in America. It's infected movies, comics, and every other form of media, I hate it.
Imagine having a bag full of money but refusing to buy cat a better food. That's a bad person.
as if stealing in the first place wasn't enough.
The momment i saw her refuse to spend 0.5 second to pick up the bag of money literally sit next to her, to save a cat, i lost all hope in the writing of the game. They tried to make a likable character by let her save the cat over the money she worked for her whole life for, but ended up making her having room temperature IQ.

The key component to making a likeable anti hero is giving them some sort of redeeming quality, some spark of humanity that let's people connect with the character.
Or you go full Drakengard and the heroes are basically psychopaths, who are irredeemable monsters and deserve what's coming to them.

@@Orphim I honestly loved how fckd up the story was in Drakengard. They course corrected in 2, but the first one is like a horrible car crash in slow motion. Caim stabbing on some poor soldiers during a "dialogue" in the first cutscenes sure is a highmark for a protagonist.. and the music *shivers*
Kain from the "Legacy of Kain" is a great example. Which is ironic given that the main writer of LoK, Amy Hennig, was seemingly involved with this Forspoken train wreck.
This whole game is banking on the idea of great power will make you a great person but that is fundamentally not true. Your character is not determined by your abilities, but that is what this stupid game is relying on. Its the idea that: if I can save the world I can redeem myself for being an utter piece of shit. I can also go back to being a piece of shit after I save the world because you might need me to save it again. Thats why we hate her character.
Kratos is a perfect example of how to make a character that’s like Frey.
He wanted nothing to do with anything.
He didn’t wanna be there.
He didn’t wanna talk with people.
He didn’t want to help.
He was furious and alone and sad and just wanted to do his own thing.
Yet you stay intrigued because he was perfectly written to open up and start caring.
Also a revenge story is VERY satisfying to follow

I think Forspoken would have benefitted heavily by using an honor mechanic. If the character is going to be a trash person, it feels better if it's by player choice. It allows for the character and the player to be on the same page rather than forcing players to control an unlikable character with no values. They really missed the RP of RPG in this one.

@Probable improbability "fran bow" ending is what i would call it. im sure there are older examples, but fran bow's ending was one of the shockiest surprise pikachu moments that made you wonder some things and very very deliberately left things unfinished. thus leading you to wonder if it was a fever dream or if the 5 realities situation is real.
Sounds like a plot to that one movie, forget the name, where some Vietnam vet went back to life after Vietnam as a postal worker, but the twist is he never left Vietnam, it was all just an illusion/fantasy his mind was playing out as he was dying.
Occurrence at owl creek bridge
Frey is as likable as Galadriel in Rings of Power. They wanted a "strong woman" but just created a really unlikable one.

@@Eversoul12The newer Fantasy games are not that great. There are much better JRPG games out there anyway. Squeenix always focus on multiple projects, manage to lower the quality on most of them, and have unrealistic sale goals.
Forspoken is a very good example for: The characters are only as smart or skilled as the writers creating them. Well and the writers were just terrible.
Yes writing for the story was not fleshed out enough, the idea was there it was, I kinda liked the gameplay and magic powers and the wheel of magical abilities even the traversal was kinda unique, like I said the idea was there, but I think there was to many heads in the kitchen on this one, and not a methodical story to go along cause there’s a flip and I’m like wait what that doesn’t make sense

My favorite part is when the Thanta given theirs gifts to baby Frey, which all of them end up not mattering at all judging by how she grow up:
-One gifted her wisdom, yet she was stupid as a rock, unable to understand even a simpler thing like " duh, my mum seemed happy and loved me, while also getting slowly corrupted by that ring..... Mmm.. Maibe is for this reason she's left me" instead of keeping making the same question over and over even after said (badly done) flashbacks
-one gifted her bravery, yet she doesn't want to stand and fight until either forced to do that or while getting super dooper powers out of nowhere
-and another gifted her sense of moral Justice, and yet she was the lowest scum of the whole game. You could even use the excuse "hur dur growing into bad society make the nicest people bad", but she doesn't display any kind of redeeming factor aside from loving her cat and MERELY respecting the judge who was always helping and supporting her (which makes her being such a shit person even more stupid, since there was someone who was ready to help her into a better life, she just actively ignored her out of her own narcissism).
It's so laughable.

The perfect likeable antihero that was done very well was Ash from The Army of Darkness, that movie reflects this game a lot but he was amazingly done.

This is just a conspiracy in my head and I honestly don't know how insane it sounds but here goes. I swear this game is front loaded with cutscenes and slow walking and exposition dumps in the beginning solely to get you to play long enough that you can't refund the game.
i find that a lot of modern movies and games with a female protagonist, that the protagonist is genuinely unlikeable . 🤷♂️

Every time they blame their consumers, but fail to relise they are just shit at writing characters, since few normal people enjoy this bs in their entertainment. Few examples: The Ghostbusters 2016, Charlie Angels 2019 ... tbh every single all female remake ... Rings of Power, She-B*tch, ups i mean She-Hulk, SW sequels, latest Thor movie a little bit too. Just few on top of my head.
TLoU 2 didnt fail because it was held up my 10//10 first game. Similarly why Captain Marvel was not a flop, because it was stuck, illogically, in between 2 of the most hyped movies in same franchise which was at its final climatic moments. No one wanted to miss a single detail at that time. Had it been released sooner or later, it would have been a fail, just like every single one i mentioned before.
This game was made for gamers girls not gamers

@@hopeful4243 "I kinda get turned off at stories that have a holier than though" well, thats pretty much it, also theres a need to drop a oneliner every other sentence Frey speaks, that gets pretty annoying imo (think generic hollywood protag, thats Frey). Gameplaywise enemies are beautiful but are just bullet sponges with no real mechanics you just spam LMB on, free running is fun but unresponsive and the scenery is eyecatching for the most part. Overall its not a terrible game, but i def wouldnt say its worth full price, i recommend waiting for a sale if you really wanna play it.

My only opinions are that the combat looks fun, the aesthetics and everything including banter between characters reminds me of DA: Inquisition, and Frey acts exactly as I expected given the intro sequence; basically, I didn't see anything that surprised me negatively or pleasantly.

Writers that go for the "strong female character" route usually make the most obnoxious and unlikeable character. The best strong female characters are ones where the writers don't need to purposefully try to push that image.
I can't wait to see a modern-day remake of Secret of NIMH just to see how badly these writers fumble Mrs. Brisby's characterization. She goes against so many fundamental aspects of what they believe are essential to a strong female character, yet she is strongly written on a level any of them couldn't even begin to conceive.

6:41 important sidenote: none of those stories tried building the narrative in specific ways to manipulate the audience into believing those characters to be "Good". They are bad, period. Biggest problem with Forspoken, Fey is generally a bad person, no where near as bad to the level to be labelled as a villain, but a bad person, with no good qualities-but the game is CONSTANTLY trying to put her in a good light, it is sickening and borderline virtue signaling. But where as virtue signaling is framed in a way that it'd make sense to the audience, Forspoken does not, that is how low the standards of narrative is presented in this game.
Wow someone with an actual argument for why she sucks besides "Shes just annoying" or "She didn't feed the cat".
It is interesting with games like this, it's like the people doing the hard work like making the gameplay fun and the environments beautiful have it all ruined by the decisions of people with more creative control (the much easier jobs), like with the story.

I'd say making a remotely likeable character is way easier than designing satisfying gameplay or creating immersive environments. The fact they screwed up doesn't suggest it's actually pretty hard, just that the people responsible don't have as much talent as they do luck in the form of cronyism/nepotism. Like coming up with a fantasy world that isn't just "medieval Europe but with magic" isn't one of the hardest things in the world, despite most fantasy movies and games failing miserably at that.

You know the way I keep hearing the main character of Forspoken described reminds me a lot of how Chai in Hi Fi Rush started out.
He was cocky, he thought he could take on the world with no help. But the difference is Chai grows to understand that he does need help. As powerful as he is, he wouldn’t have gotten as far as he did without his team helping him.

The mention about evil alignment Main Characters and the MC of Forspoken just being a thief just reminded me of the main character of....Thief. Garret's super likeable because he's a little snarky, but treated as extremely competent at what he does.

Barret was a good thief.. and while not a good man he was a Human being. someone you could relate to the struggle of to some extent. He wasn't always unlikeable he became a thief to pay off his rent and other problems. His actions had consequences and he realizes this.
If any of you want to play a game that does what forspoken tries to do but actually succeeds, play infamous second son. The protagonist is also a douche, but he actually develops, and the game does things to make you invested into him. Also his jokes are actually well timed.
This mess costs 80 EUR in EU - the base game at that. WTF is wrong with game pricing nowadays?
AAA games have huge bugget nowaday so increase price actually make sense.

@@modernhiendai The market also increased exponentially during the last decade. Gaming has become mainstream and isn't some nice activity anymore. Gaming companies also earn more money per game copy due to digital distribution (you don't have to produce physical discs anymore, the logistics of selling them is gone, you get rid of the whole used market and so on) and due to additional monetization nowadays. In my opinion, a price increase doesn't make sense at all.
To make an evil or mean character likeable is to make them relatable or sympathetic in some way. If you've played last of us, this defines Joel fairly well. He's an asshole, a jerk, and generally dooms humanity at the end - but his actions had consequences and the fact that he deals with those consequences really shows how much he CARES about someone else and that makes him quite human and likeable.
Also like we know why he's like that he's not a prick for no reason. The first 20 minutes of the game is you playing as his daughter and then she dies, not by the infected but by the military who was meant to save them
I made it to Bill but I hated the gameplay so much even though I loved the story I just couldn't be bothered. At least I get to watch it now as a tv series.

Also there’s the thing with fireflies, they are literally a terrorist organisation and to believe that they would just share a potential cure, is incredibly naive, if they were even able to make the cure.

Sure, Asmon giving it a 6/10 for pure experience with the game he had so far. But I think the price of the game really needs to act as a multiplier and in this case the total score should be lower due to a high price.

I think it would be better if they made her a TINY bit more extreme with her hate, cussing, and violence. Along with the way she bickers with cuff.
And to balance it out she would subconscious be protective of people who have been nice to her.

When I first saw this game I knew the only thing that I would like would be the magic system. After seeing how the magic worked I immediately imagined how a last airbender game on latest consoles would look.
Even if the combat was 10/10 the protagonist and writing makes this game unplayable, I'd rather give up on gaming all together
Agreed, you want to like the character your playing. Take God of War, you want to kill everyone because you feel Kratos anger and pain, and he's so powerful that it's fulfilling. Imagine God of War with the kid being the main character and he behaved the way he did when he found out he was a God, ALL GAME. I wouldn't play that shit

This is a isikai game but the story has two protagonist. One is the looser with a life so horrible she would be happy to be in a dangerous but fantastic land with a friend on her arm that she gets to know while she lives a new and better life.
The other is someone who actually likes her life because it's not shitty and wants to go back to her easy life and is frustrated every second she spends away from her Friends and family back home.
The character just doesn't work because she isn't thinking. She is just a trope of many different isikai people all in one.

Definitely. It's just a little thing that helps flesh out a world and goes miles to making it seem like a real, lived in place.
Xenoblade 3 does this, and with the English voices gives the game an insane amount of charm. I loved it.
Not shocked at all the accessability settings. The whole game seems like a 'look how modern we are'. Gaming is for everyone, not every game - is for everyone.

The combat is a mess and the world building and exploration is very bad.
The inventory system and map design is one of the worst part in the game.

Looking at her spells and how she tosses them out makes me wish spellbreak would have made a pve game like this where you could have the spells interact for more damage or cc's. Shoot a rock, slow time, super heat with fire, and do extra damage or a new damage type. Maybe wind, lightning, and water make a storm like spell that's a higher tier.

One of the best characters in video game history was Arthur Morgan from RDR2. He did some bad stuff, but his redemption arc was second to none.

I 100% agree with AsmonG 3:14 she is a terrible character. The problem is these new age writers don’t know how to write for a tough & strong lead character, especially when it comes to females. They invite how to write for a strong tough Bad guy because they deal with Bad Guys like me all the time because we are strong & have centuries of moral upbringing & values so we do not come off as A-Holes. But the way they interact with us ALWAYS makes them off to be villainous. Complete garbage piles of humans. Best example of all this? Look at the whole Hogwarts Legacy game. Those activists are Frey. You don't have to have a good character for a story to be enjoyable. There are plenty of genres with specifically evil guys as protagonists. And not like dead pool or batman I mean genuinely evil and calculating. There is an entire genre of it called Immortal demon cultivators in chinese light novels. They are well writen and it is interesting to read how they manipulate people and pull on strings.
