The thing about the Witcher is that the original books do actually reach a point where the monster slaying becomes less important, and we start to focus more on politics, ancient prophecies, and the war with Nilfgaard. Ciri also does start to take more of the spotlight toward the end of the saga. It's never to the extent of Witcher Netflix mind you, but she does reach a point where her role in the story is as important as Geralt's. The key difference though...is that the books were actually well written, and made the shift in focus work. People would come for the monster slaying, and then be surprised by how interesting everything else was too. That doesn't happen with this show, because the writing is awful. So, when the monster hunting starts to become less significant, the show has nothing else to maintain the interest of the audience. Had they actually followed the books, and told the story properly, the way the original author did, then they wouldn't have this problem. Unfortunately, they screwed it up, and are now paying the price.

People need to learn that when you adapt a character driven story, you need to preserve that character's traits, not swap them. You also need to respect the rules that the world has established. You'll then find that audiences are willing to accept a lot more in terms of deviation - so long as the pillars are respected and preserved.

It's almost as if the characters and their interactions are what made the source material so engaging and alluring.
The games knew that and despite being outside of the books' timeline/events, they constantly call back to well known scenes, stay true to the characters and their intentions, and new characters outside of the book act well within the world rules and lore created within them. The show on the other hand set out to appropriate the source material and only use the name to sucker fans in. It's sad really. They were handed a massive diamond and turned it into turd.

  • @HiddenHyde
    @HiddenHyde Рік тому +666

The key to a good adaptation, as far as I can tell, is staying true to the characters. Fans will forgive, or even like, a lot of deviations as long as they see the characters they've come to like be portrayed as accurately as possible. If they're doing a good job with that (which usually means no attribute-swapping), the rest will more likely fit than not.

Maybe because growing up I was watching reruns of Buffy and Xena (and secretly falling in love with Ares), I know that a girl main character in a series can be done and done right. However, the main character needs character development, by taking a peripheral character and trying to make it a main, it not only destroys the original storyline and disappoints the hardcore fans, it creates a wimpy underdeveloped main character that can't attract new fans.
It wouldn't have hurt if they'd just made a "5 to 15 years later" spinoff with a main story of a girl trying to follow in her father's footsteps, or taken another entirely unfamiliar character into the same universe, let's call it Buffy the demon slayer 😂 and they could have been as creative as they'd like

    • @grafeugenius

And in the interest of fairness to some writers on legacy IPs, they have to play ball with showbiz and showbiz just wants to shit out the safest bets possible. Many many original works are not allowed to enter production in hollywood and the like because they aren't from a proven IP.
The men behind some of the greatest Disney movies ever made kept reworking old fairytales and such in hopes to finally get a shot at their dream project only for disney to do absolutely no advertising for it at all and then throw them under the bus, after ages of stringing them along with "Okay, after this one you get your dream project."

This isnt Game of thrones where you have servsl factions who play for the throne, the witcher ips sucess rests on Geralt and how he reacts to the world. That is why with the witcher splitting the focus to so many characters was very bad. And why its now destroying the show.

The outcry for racialized faces in medieval settings and the outcry for the white faces in Gods of Egypt are not opposite events, they are both backlashes in favor or opposed to white supremacy in mainstream pop culture. That does not make nazis out of people just for being uncomfortable with a black elf, but white supremacy never needed nazis to be the status quo.

The problem for female Doctor who, in my opinion, wasnt just the gender. Yes doctor can be either female or male when regenerates so on that part its almost okay (even though people were used to see male doctor over these many years). But one of the problems I did see was the actor itself. She just didnt give me the doctor vibes and her acting wasnt that great.
Biggest problem however was the marketing when they decided to have female doctor. That for me was a downfall of doctor who and it pushed me as a female viewer away. They marketed the new doctor as a game breaker and told how this was shattering glass ceilings. That marketing was just so condescending that I decided to skip this new doctor completely. I have watched all the "modern" doctor whos until Jodie but that marketing was just so bad and the first impressions of the new doctor who was bad so havent even touched the current doctor who timeline. Maybe someday the series will turn itself around again but until then.

For those who haven't delved into the books yet, PLEASE don't let the series deter you. While the characters share the same names in both mediums, that's where the similarities end. The books offer a uniquely rich and immersive experience that shouldn't be missed.

    For the Female Doctor
the problem wasn't that they turned a male character female (they had already shown that The Doctors race was capable of this in an Ep with a previous Doctor)
    the problem was:
    1. it was just a bunch of PC Stories that didn't need the Doctor at all, and nothing the Doctor did or said had any actual impact
    2. too many "companions" at the same time (3) so no one got any actual development

But everyone loves the changes that CDPR made because those changes were pretty much at the essence of the Witcher. CDPR were clearly Witcher fans and proud of their culture, and it showed even though they made deviations.

I will say I really do wish the Witcher game fans ragging on the show realize they're ragging on it for the wrong reasons. For example, the books actually aren't just about Geralt. They are at first, especially with the short stories. These first books really set up the Witcher and Geralt and the world then the actually story really begins in the 3rd book. Ciri eventually does take a primary role in the books towards the end and is probably more important than Geralt. Yennefer on the other hand shouldn't have this much screen time especially early on. She is more of an important side character than a main one. The books aren't about her they're about Geralt and Ciris bond. Ciri does become a badass as she's literally trained by our favourite badass Geralt. its a shame they really messed up their development together by not following the source material.
Also Asmon was off the mark a little, the intrigue and ball scenes in the books are some of the most interesting parts especially later on they're just handled terribly in the show. As a Book and Game fan I truly think the show is lacking the most with its immersion and world building. Because they replace men with women without making them great characters, just put them because. We have to much female characters that didn't serve its purpose - being good.

In the case of Dr. Who, I would have been able to give a female Doctor a chance. I was excited for a female doctor. And then they wrote a season completely destroying what the doctor stood for, what the doctor had done in the past, they tried to "change" the doctor without understanding him or the deeper concepts behind the character. They could have given us a show with "Missy" a female doctor and the fans would have loved it. But they decided to butcher the history of the show. And the fans successfully made them pay the price in ratings.

I wonder if the reason writing has gone so bad these days is because writers are less and less inspired by real life experience, by classic movies, by great novels, but rather inspired by other fictional work such as movies and tv show. it creates a loop of where hyper reality becomes the new reality for them. and so we are entering an era of hyper-hyper reality

The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and a lot of other series weren't a 1:1 because they were based off of books. Movies like The Shinning, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, Watchmen, and The Boys (tv series) all diverted from their source material. The point is, they were close to the source material or kept the same spirit as the source material. The Netflix Witcher was just pure fanfiction.
Imagine a Netflix Dragon Ball Z tv series where Goku, Vegeta, and Krillin are ignored, and Bulma and Chi Chi are treated like the main characters. You're just souring the built in audiences expectations.

LOL, I thought I'd pressed the wrong button on The Witcher because the scenes kept repeating. Now I know I wasn't crazy. I just didn't pay attention as I kept pausing the episode to do something. The wild hunt were feared as ghosts, spectres who appear from nowhere and kill everything in their path. But when they did the reveal I was disappointed cos he was just an Elf. But before that, the game made them something more scary than they were and that was the beauty of the game.

Witcher COULD have been a game of thrones. The books have a HUGE intrigue, backstabbing and political tension, mixed in with big monsters being killed in fun fights. They however went with...boobs good...look stuff is happening...and...and there are things over there look look! Yes Season 3 was insanely bad. The part of the book they take it from tells you WHY things are happening, and why it matters. In Season 3, it was just events happening because stuff.

It’s criminal what they’re doing to the Witcher verse. Got into Witcher 3 pretty late, 1st time playing it was right after the next gen update launch but got so into the game & lore I power read through the books right after. Other fantasy franchises like LoTR or GoT got their chance to shine before being eventually ruined by Hollywood, Witcher could’ve had that if they maintained continuity with their S1 production staff & most importantly Henry Cavill. Well… that’s my vent 😂

Honestly i am amazed how someone can kill a good source material. Some may say they could not do it. B-sht. We had a good Witcher (called Hexer) TV series back in 2002 and despite the fact that the budget was way less than what you can get from Netflix it was actually very close to the source. CGI was not the best but back in the day with that buget its still good enough. So Lauren stating she wanted to stay close to the source material and delivering this is just a solid proof she is not capable od doing her job. As far as Netflix Witcher show - it would probably be even worse if not for Henry Cavil who knows the books, games, and was stubborn enough to try to keep at leat some of the plot in check. But thats "new film/tv series making" for you. And then when all goes to hell - blame the fans! Thats just sad

There indeed was a lot of politics and mage / king / spies plots and entire chapters of books not focusing on Geralt.
Thing is those parts while good in books, where you have 300-400 pages per volume, they are not good enough for the series to occupy 1 or more of episodes.

Anyone who read the books, can agree that women in "witcher" was strong and cool in natural way, without any agenda pushing bullshit. And even in first season ciri was kinda weak i didint understand why they made her like that. Witcher books has absolutely fantastic base material. Some fucking assholes goes in and fucking ruins it. Its so disappointing that people who don't care about their job now get the job. And that diversity bullshit is ruining everything
