- We'll be reviewing a Spirit XZ-2 Bass by Steinberger with EMG HB Pickups and BTC Electronics. Can this bass keep up with modern sounding instrument with these upgrades?

The signal chain on the play along are through a Scarlett Focusrite 2i2 in Logic Pro X. Using a little bit of compression.

That bass sounds great!
The similarity in sound of the neck pickup with the treble boosted with a P-bass might have to do with the split-coil pickup of the .P-bass technically being a humbucklike those EMGs.
Amazing they don't make this body anymore. Looks better than what they currently have if you ask me.
I have this exact same bass and I LOVE it. The difference is the pickups; I put Passive/Vintage Humbucker Bartolini and it's awesome :)
Great helpful demo thanks! Just put an HBCS in my short scale and loved it so much I ordered a second regular HB pickup to make it a pair in this bass. Not sure which will go in bridge hole?
The strap hook on the Spirit XT is a must but not so much on the XZ shown here...as it has the body to mount the front button. I put the OE strap hook from the Synapse on my XT. Looks and functions fine. I have seen some of the homebrews you flashed...and they are bad...! The OE straphooks are hard to find but show up every few years. My OE Steinberger L2 has no balance problem because...strap swivel!😂
I’m looking to get a spirit with active EMG’s installed eventually. Love the modern tone here.

What is the stringspacing at the bridge pu?
Was looking at the EMG HB. On Thomann it says max string spacing of 50mm.
I need a pu for 54mm+/-
Not bad not bad at all. I have the XT version I picked up a few years ago to do some modifications to but I would much prefer the XZ-2. Only thing that puts me off is the balance :(
I came from the XT Version years ago and yeah the XZ is a bit better when it comes to having a bass hug your body. Unfortunately the balance is the issue with these spirit line basses from Gibson.

I have the lefty spirit XZ 25 - 5 string version since the early 2000s. Which pickups do you recommend?? Cool video by the way.

How uncomfortable is it to play the bass standing up? Do you really need the hook? Do you recommend this bass in 2023?
Standing up is decent. I’m not a fan of over reaching my fretting arm to the first 3 frets and the hook was mainly an idea for the L shaped bodies that look like a shoebox.
Would I recommend this bass in 2023? Absolutely not. I actually sold this bass after making this video for an Ibanez EHB. They’re really solid instruments and extremely comfortable/versatile than this modified Spirit Bass
@@sonojon0 What advantages does the Ibanez EHB have?
@@marioharley9379 Better playing position sitting and standing especially where the strap location is positioned at about the 12th fret of the instrument. Which the Spirit bass does not have thus causing the awkward playing angle sitting down/playing standing up.
Also the advantage the EHB has are upgradeable pickups from any brand and not just EMGs that the Spirits are incredibly limited to.
