    More than all of this, the Guild's capitulation to Paul caused the fall of House Corrino... trapping the Emperor on the surface and forcing the Guild to return the amassed galactic armada in orbit.

      The arrogance and folly of Shaddam IV is what caused the fall of House Corrino. His father's rule was bad, but Shaddam really took it all the way down.

      In the universe while Leto II and Paul Golden Path was uncovered by the Bene Gesserit most of humanity remembered them as Tyrants. Compared to the Corrinos the tyranny under the Atreides was too much. In retrospect it wouldn't be a surprise if many view the Corrinos with respect

    Thing is, based on the Dune novel, the Sardaukar knew the Fremen were their equal, and a serious threat. They, internally, knew they were slipping. But the structural circumstances left them in a position to do little to stop what was happening. They tried to wipe out the pan and grabben Fremen, and even tried to drive the city dwelling Fremen into the dessert. Because of the Guilds ulterior motives, they had no intelligence on the true scope of the Fremen threat. They paid for this with their empire.

    I like how ‘The Butlerian Jihad’ had very little jihading lol and ‘The Machine Crusades’ is where the true Jihad begins. Those prequels fell short of Frank’s works though. Still interesting

      Yes, Herbert son and his writing partner are not nearly as good as him, the new books however are not bad, just not on par with the six core titles.

    I know Dune has ***tons*** of written material out there by FH and his son and others, I don't claim to have read it all. So I'm going to make my criticism from the standpoint of my girlfriend who has read none of it. Lets call her peer group, the Moviegoers.
    From the perspective of a Moviegoer, Dune sets up "the other houses" to be backdrops. Even much of the world they show on screen is never really explored/theres not much depth to it. This has personally always left me frustrated with Dune, when compared to other sci-fi storytelling. Even without being overly technical like Star Trek, Star Wars does a pretty good job of exploring the galaxy as a whole, even with the story focused essentially on one family. And I think its that depth of visual storytelling which has made Star Wars the success it is. By no means am I arguing for Dune to be more like Star Wars. But it would be nice if, for example, on the upcoming HBO series they show more of the planets, more of the other great houses, what Bene Gesserit training looks like/do they have an HQ/how do they manage to infiltrate the communities they operate within? It'd be great to see more of the daily life of average people instead of them basically being little more than set furniture.

      I agree it's been pretty arrakis focused but I think that will change in the coming films. It wasn't a necessity up to now to explore every where else, but now I see space travel and other worlds having the opportunity to be explored in the jihad.

      I understand what you’re saying completely and agree to an extent, but at the end of the day Dune isn’t about the greater galaxy like Star Wars, 40K or Halo. It’s more of a character driven drama about a small group of characters than anything else. On one hand I want to see more of the dune universe outside of the main characters but on the other hand I don’t even know what they’d show unless it was something grand like the Butlerian Jihad. I guess they could just do GOT in space

    • @Rum-Runner
      @Rum-Runner 5 місяців тому

      If anything that just serves to cement in the minds of the reader or moviegoer the unparalleled importance of Arrakis to the empire. It’s not that nothing else in the universe matters, it’s that Arrakis is so essential to the known universe that a mere shift of power on that _one_ desert planet determines the future of the rest of humanity.

      @@PKM9107 imagine a Gurney origin story. He's apparently been around, having has experience with the Harkonnens prior to the events of the main story. So maybe we get to see the universe through Gurney's eyes, his travels, his battles, and it ends with him giving his first lesson to a young Paul.

      Anyhow there is a skit with Tom Hanks being a relative or roadie for Wayne's World. Anyhow he does a Mike check and goes "1-2-3 1-2-3 Sibilance.... Sibilance" into the microphones. I think the band was Aerosmith.

      @@asavelakuse6865 I read Mentats but not really the other Brian books, but Mentats makes it sound like that Vorian even regretted what he had done and his testimony against the Harkonnens, hence why he actualy diverted a larg chunk of his fortune to try and keep house Harkonnen afloat. I dont know the exact going ons in the war but thay the "cowardly" act was actually saving millions of lives of lower class people, they were going to be a strategic sacrafice and it was prevented, I dont know the impact of it on the war but the the leadership had a belief if it was done it would have quickly ended the war but ended up having a minimal impact. Some of Vorians attitude at the time may have been wrongful trying actually to divert attention from the fact who and what he was. He wasent perfect.

      @@asavelakuse6865 Alot of strange things in Brian's books some argue of the validity of hos works being the true following of his father's books. The book also mentions there were thinking machines that were actually human sympathizers or was refrence to Erasmus alone or were there others? but this is hard to explain just looked it up.
      Erasmus was using a "human" shield to protect the empire they use the term losely. They were humans reduced to a primitive state by the thinking machines they were "animals". So in order to take out the Empire ( it was Vorians father who started ALL OF IT with the other Titans and the use of AI). Abulurd Harkonnen was actually a follower or student of Vorians and it was actually Vorians influence that made Abulurd Harkonnenn make the decision he did. Abulurd Harkonnen was actually kind.of righteous, he simply said he could not just kill these people he didn't view them as animals so he refused the attack against Vorians orders himselfs orders. They won anyways and the "animals" were saved but this is due to the fact the thinking machine Erasmus would not sacrafice his own "son' Gilbertus Albans who was one of these animals who later created the Mentat school. Abulurd Harkonnenn seemed to kind of have a faith that there would be a way the people would survive and the war would be won, so much he sacraficed his career and essentially life, maybe he saw something no one else did maybe he had some presence. He was a good soldier and if it actually took killing them to win i think he would have done it. It kinda has to do with my theory , it's not the Atredies blood line that makes Paul important it's ths Harkonnen..even the female Harkonnen that joined the sisters were the vrry first ones to unlock the bulk of tremendous power they had later, the "voice" was first spoken by a Harkonnen. It's 2 sides of the same coin the potential best and the very worst all in one. I also think the Baron himself had a form prescience.

    You missed a chance to talk about how House Harkonnen was founded by a disgraced member of House Butler.
    I forget exactly how House Atreides interbred with the Butlers but Corrino, Harkonnen and Atreides are all distant cousins (Bene Gesserit breeding program).

  • @venkelos6996
    @venkelos6996 5 місяців тому

    It just boggles my mind that one family/bloodline managed to hold power,seemingly uninterrupted, for over 10,000 years? Considering various conflicts, and how "easily" Paul, and to a different extent, the Bene Gesserit, toppled Shaddam IV, I feel like that rates right up there with "there's enough Spice on just Arrakis to support both the massive Guild AND the many nobles seeking its health benefits, and life extension, which, if the average Padashah Emperor need3d to rein for over 120 years, for 81 of them, over more that ten millennia, means they were using a fair bit. It's always kind of weird that either the Emperor, or maybe the Guild, didn't just control Arrakis directly, and they doled it out to other Houses. If I were the Guild, I'd sequester the planet, and get rid if records of its location. We have most of the ships, and few to no one has made longterm trips, actually plying the spaceways, for ages, so it's not like most people actually "knew where it was" galactically.
