Shaddam didn't really make "dumb" choices though, it was a failure of imagination. He was too stuck in his view of the universe to imagine the numbers and might of the Fremen. His worst decision was trusting the Baron
Shaddam had the worst luck ever. Not only did he literally give away Arrakis, a.k.a. The most valuable and most important planet in the universe to the house he sought to destroy, which basically is like giving your worst enemy a nuke hoping he won't notice backstab with a knife, but he also ended up a reign of emperors that lasted 10,000 years. Like, imagine being that guy that ended 10 millenia of emperors. And funniest of all, it was all the result of his own ego. He actually liked Leto Atreides and if not for his own interests, he even thought Leto to be the best possible husband for his daughters and possibly even the best successor to the Throne, since Shaddam didn't have sons. But, like, instead of that, he chose to chase his ego, and in less that a decade, lost literally everything. What a guy.
It wasn't luck, he tried a series of plays he thought would focus all power on him without having to negotiate with the various other powers in his universe and he lost everything. He got greedy and ambitious, he even resented his best ally, the count.
Not a developed character, Iurlan is also there to explain Puar's stupid statement at the end of the book. If this kwisatz haderach had been born as predicted, Irulan would be an old woman.
Imagine Shaddam rolling in his grave knowing that Paul married his daughter but never gave her heirs, effectively blocking his bloodline from ever having a claim to the throne. He not only failed in his schemes but also obtained the worst possible outcome for himself and he totally deserved it.
He should have already known this, there was no more political power in the Corrinos when they decided to go to the dune for a summer vacation and were completely destroyed, Irulan is a literary asset, to explain the foolishness of the final script. i like to think with the mythical status achieved by Paul and Leto 2, it wouldnt be remembered that house corrino managed to survive, more that so great was House Atreides, that corrino dissapeared into it. like it was just paul and leto sorting out the issue and getting a firm grasp. history will just remember Shaddam as the one who set the stage for Leto. i always kinda forget that the story is more about worm leto than paul. certainly paul is a big part of it. but history would barely remember him after what his son did. i guess when people find the secret histories leto hid and get the true history of things that they will know more about paul.
Not that it makes any sense. It is unreal and unrealistic in all terms. Irulan didn't even try to have a child herself, because PAUL said he would kill her, which gives an idea that the universe is a small thing, I think she would have tried, even if it didn't come to anything, (if the character had really a sense in the story) is silly, Because the character exists to explain how Paul destroyed millennia of a dynasty, it's not supposed to make sense. And of course, if you finished the whole shitty series, you know that it's about Chani's immortal love for Paul, that is, everything in the end is about a brunette you fall in love with in the desert, looking from afar, Dune looks like a silly romance of teenager.
great b roll content. i am just now getting into dune.. and as a lover of tolkeins works (as well as being a sci-fi nerd) I am enjoying the Dune books and movies. your content also helps me piece everything together

I’ve been obsessed with Dune since I was 15 in 1995. I’ve read all the books numerous times, watched the films and tv series numerous times and have listened the audiobook versions a few times. I still think it’s one of the greatest sci-fi books of all time. But, I am beyond disappointed with the casting of Christopher Walken as the emperor. Not only does it nit match the look of the emperor in the books, but the age of the actor is just so off that it’s painful. It reminds me of of how bad the decision to as to cast Duncan Idaho with Aquaman. These two decisions are painful, especially because DV is such a fan of the books and such a great person to bring them to the big screen. Why would he make these two terrible decisions? I mean, I understand that he has casting directors, but he must have final say, right? He had to know that while Christopher Walken was a genius actor in films like the Deer Hunter, his age alone, makes him a poor choice for the emperor. Just like the decision to cast Aquaman as Duncan Idaho was a terrible decision. Particularly because Duncan Idaho is so key to the long-term story. Why would you cast somebody who is a poor actor and not good at nuance? I’m sure I will enjoy the second film as much as the first but little things like this truly disappoint fans of Dune.
He was barely in the film Christopher Walken. The age isn’t an issue for me for such a character who probably doesn’t have a bigger role later on? Haven’t read the books, but plan to.
I assume you weren't too happy with part two. I can understand that for people that were already into Dune before part 1 was announced. But I think what DV doing here is quite interesting. In the book, Paul has a vision where he is the one killing the Baron just like in the movie. I find this to be set in the same universe, just if things went slightly different. Except for stuff like the age of the emperor's actor, of course.
Great video Can you do Jason Brody from Far Cry,Justine Florbelle,Augustin Lambert and The Shadow from Amnesia and Minister for Magic and Ministry of Magic from Harry Potter and The Hunger Games event

The BG wouldn't allow him a son, they wanted the future KH to marry one of his daughters and take the throne peacefully (until Jessica derailed all that)...still if he was screwed, he was no doubt screwed well... imagine how hot those BG must be between the sheets ;-)
Im sorry that this question might seemingly have nothing to do with this video, but if the Bene Gesserit were so involved with their Kwisatz Hadarak project; if they attempted to weaken the very Imperial Family to facilitate it, and then bullied the Emperor of the Known Universe to help safeguard Atreides, how were they later surprised that Jessica had born Leto a son? They sermed to have eyes everywhere, and even Sisters who were not openly known as members of the BG were manipulating things, so how, if the Atreides heir was so critical, and Jessica had been instructed to make a girl for them, did they go nearly two decades without being aware? Leto was popular; I'd bet other Houses were thinking of trying to marry a daughter to Paul, and solodify a union with the rising star of Atreides, or at least there would have been buzz that Paul had been born, yet the ever-alert Sisterhood never knew until their leader heard sbout it at court? It's also kind of weird that, after she birthed Paul, that Jessica waited so long to produce that girl. She and Leto were still close, and I feel like it could have maybe worked if they heard THAT buzz, but then missed the Paul buzz. Hell, it's weird that they didn't know about Paul, but had sent Jessica to Leto to have a child. Were they not concerned that a beautiful, seductive BG hadn't had ANY child with the noble she was sent to? The Harkonnen heir was already in his 20s; would they have wanted to wait another X years for an Atreides girl to be able to breed with him? Yada yada, this was a fun video. I learned stuff I wasn't aware of, and it sort of helped illustrate why the Emperor might be paranoid about Atreides. It never seemed, too me, that Leto had actually seemed preparing to topple the throne, so why destroy him? Shaddam could have had Irulan marry Paul, preventing the Maud'dib Crisis, but nope. Still, very glad i watched, and learned a number of things! Thank you!😊

i like to think with the mythical status achieved by Paul and Leto 2, it wouldnt be remembered that house corrino managed to survive, more that so great was House Atreides, that corrino dissapeared into it. like it was just paul and leto sorting out the issue and getting a firm grasp. history will just remember Shaddam as the one who set the stage for Leto. i always kinda forget that the story is more about worm leto than paul. certainly paul is a big part of it. but history would barely remember him after what his son did. i guess when people find the secret histories leto hid and get the true history of things that they will know more about paul.
Not that it makes any sense. It is unreal and unrealistic in all terms. Irulan didn't even try to have a child herself, because PAUL said he would kill her, which gives an idea that the universe is a small thing, I think she would have tried, even if it didn't come to anything, (if the character had really a sense in the story) is silly,
Because the character exists to explain how Paul destroyed millennia of a dynasty, it's not supposed to make sense.
Wow! Thank you for this very concise history of the Emperor. Truly appreciated it

You know 40K copied Dune and not the other way around, right?
@@pietromassimi7104 it's hopefully satire 👍
You guys should use more clips from the Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003) miniseries, they’re great!
Please make the video on the malefactors from the suffering
Will add it to the list!
Oh my lawd yes The Suffering great games basically Dead Space before that was even a thing
I love how you use footage from Eve Online battles to demonstrate space warfare
Very informative narrative. Many thanks.
How old is the Emperor in the books, I mean how old would he be in the age he has in the framework of the second movie??
He was barely in the film Christopher Walken. The age isn’t an issue for me for such a character who probably doesn’t have a bigger role later on? Haven’t read the books, but plan to.
I assume you weren't too happy with part two. I can understand that for people that were already into Dune before part 1 was announced. But I think what DV doing here is quite interesting. In the book, Paul has a vision where he is the one killing the Baron just like in the movie. I find this to be set in the same universe, just if things went slightly different. Except for stuff like the age of the emperor's actor, of course.
@@jessedupuy4124 loved part 2. Except for Christopher Walken.
Great video Can you do Jason Brody from Far Cry,Justine Florbelle,Augustin Lambert and The Shadow from Amnesia and Minister for Magic and Ministry of Magic from Harry Potter and The Hunger Games event

Excellent job on this.

Thank you so much for these videos.. but may I say, slow it down a little. Give your narration some "Oomph!" I'm nerd enough to understand and follow but these videos seem more informative and formal than casual. The interjection at 9:17, in particular, made me feel like it was more of a reading.
I love how mistakes were written in
Awesome video, I'm currently reading Dune Messiah for the first time and then off to Children of Dune. I have a question for anyone seeing this: Where is all of this art from? It's beautiful. Most of it is fan art from DeviantArt or something like that right?
There is also art from the game Dune the spicewars in it. But most seems to be fanart indeed. (deviantart etc.)
Ow and maybe a comic. If I remember correctly there has been a comic about the first Dune book as well. I'm not completely sure though, a long time ago since I saw the thing.
@@verahamoen2742 ahh I didn't even consider a video game or comic. But yeah that's what I assumed
Guess what, you have the chance to be one of the best art guys too, because noone has the art. It all comes from our minds. Everyone's Dune world varries.

Pro tip, when utilizing AI for assistance with scripts, remove common overused GPT words and phrases from the script like "in the end", "tapestry" "complex tapestry", etc.
Jesus could you imagine growing up with that much power, and also having so many factions around you manipulating you. I mean its taken me a long time to figure out very little, and that's just life working against me. Ive never had a TEAM of powers united to manipulate me. No Dune was pushed back to next year but it's possible they got early access to the trailer.
Yeah they called it the Marvels.... noone knew the diff

The Cowbell Must Flow :)
I do wonder if Shaddam's actions were the primary reason the Sadukar became softer or was it many things over the last mabe 100 years and his actions were simply the last straw? Like a group of people who've been some of the greatest fighters in the Empire for some 10,000 years all of a sudden became less useful within 40+ years but idk. I know more was going on within the Sadukar and other external forces, but still
I should have watched this at least 3 times at the imax by now :(
ok AI
I think it’s hilarious that he couldn’t bare sons. He was screwed on so many fronts.
Clearly not screwed enough.
The BG wouldn't allow him a son, they wanted the future KH to marry one of his daughters and take the throne peacefully (until Jessica derailed all that)...still if he was screwed, he was no doubt screwed well... imagine how hot those BG must be between the sheets ;-)
Thank you 👍
Please do red rising 👏👏👏👏
Thank you!😊
It was a great struggle to interpret the subtitles of this post, as being hard of hearing, I rely on them almost entirely. Perhaps a bit of proof reading might help, especially as the post itself was fascinating.

The Imperium of the Great Houses only occupied a small section of the milky way galaxy. Ironic that the Emperor is considered a ruler of the known universe.
It was called the "Million", planets.
Yes and the galaxy contains hundreds of billions of planets and stars. The "known" univese contains possibly uncounted trillions of galaxies.@@playbookshowme484

I do like that this channel acknowledges the prequels unlike Quinn's Ideas!
I enjoy hearing about the prequels as I gave up on them some time ago, and might give them another try. I just think needs making clear that the details are taken from the expanded story by KJA. Too many contradictions in the expanded stories for me to treat them the same as actual dune.
Support quinn in not referencing them as well. Very much 2 canons.
@@pmyumjr there is only one canon; Herbert Properties LLC, if it comes from there it is the word.
Christopher Walken thats frickin crazy
Not a developed character, Iurlan is also there to explain Puar's stupid statement at the end of the book. Just like the supposed plan of the Bene Gesserit to place their soon-to-be-born project boy on the throne, this also never seemed to make sense, in the film it gets worse, because it seems that they planned to marry Iurlan C with the kwisatz haderach,
which basically makes no sense, since Paul was born a generation earlier than they planned. If this kwisatz haderach had been born as predicted, Irulan would be an old woman.
I really hope Walken has a line in the movie “walk without rhythm and it wont attract the worm. Because if he does it’s a direct reference to the fat boy slim music video 😂

Irulan was not banished to sellusus
Yeah that had me head scratching... did he get his info from a new comic story line? She was I think very controlled by BG, historian.
He said his other four daughters were, not Irulan
Technically, Paul Moad'Dib Attreides was a cantaloupe. Like Sicilians.
There is one problem I have with the Dune series and that is Arrakis is a desert world yet suddenly thousands of Freemen appear to conquer the universe. There are simply not enough food sources for this to happen. Probably the writer's biggest mistake.
It was explained in Part 1 that the Fremen cultivated plants in the desert...it was also mentioned in the book that as children they hunted (and probably ate) desert creatures such as scorpions, etc.
TOO MUCH DESERT, TOO LITTLE FOOD FOR EVEN DESERT ANIMALS. EARTHLY DESERTS HAVE ALMOST NO POPULATION IN THE SAND-LIKE CONDITIONS SHOWN AND FURTHER MORE THEIR NUMBERS WERE A SURPRISE.
@@koko40800
@@kevinjkelliher The Fremen may have also received nutrients from Spice, which granted them health and long life. I think you're nitpicking b/c we're talking about an entirely different planet and ecosystem...the Fremen were a technologically advanced people who learned to survive in the desert...they were collecting water in large basins, so no reason they couldn't grow food.....and we saw in Part 1 they had a Botanical Testing Station (where the Sardaukar attacked Paul, Kynes, Duncan et al.)
Walker is the emperor❤
