Wow, hearing of your background as a teenager, means that you are now in a perfect job that matches your skills and your passion. I learned to program computers when I was 13 using punchcards at the local college in the early to mid-1970s. So I understand your passion although there were no PCs back then.
As a high school sophomore, I went through a web development course. By the 2nd or 3rd week, the teacher stopped giving me assignments and had me help her assist the other students with how to make their web pages every day using HTML, CSS, and basic Javascript. Never had another test in her class and she passed me with a 100%. The next year, I was employed by the school system as a Network Administrator with full access to the entire school districts computers. By my senior year, my job counted for 6 of my 8 classes and I was paid to do it. That was a lot of trust given to a 16 year old, and I never abused that trust. Loved that job. Still occasionally meet up with my boss from that time, who was one of the best supervisors I've ever had. He's now in charge of the entire school districts IT system. He can run circles around me with anything networking related. Guy's a genius.

Not to be a “internet tough guy” but i was able to watch the infamous video one man one jar and i mean i looked away like a couple times...because i mean if you know you know. hell its the same as a officer getting used to finding corpses. It comes with the job. But id be more then happy to contribute to putting a scum bag like that in prison with a “unique” skill. it sounds bad ass to me! Ill bare that pain so a child doesn’t have to!
So. I have a story.
When I was in college, I got a text from someone asking if I was a girl. I paused. I was in college, bored, and partook in a little drinking from time to time.
I texted this person back and asked who they were. I still assumed it was a friend playing a (not that funny) joke.
They kept asking if I was a girl. Finally I answered "yes i'm 15"
As soon as I did that, this person got REALLY creepy. Asking me if I'd had sex, my mom's name, my age, if I was white/black/ hispanic.
I decided to become Vanessa. The 15 year old hispanic girl from the rich-hispanic side of town.
Things got creepier and I swear I volunteered no questions or responses nor flirting. I just made statements like "yes i'm a 15 year old girl"
I got tired of it, but began being woken up at midnight to 3am to "Hola mija, can I come get you?"
Well. I let it go. I stopped responding. Buuuut I started to police academy a few months later. This person still texted me periodically.
I showed my captain and he was like "why?" And I said "hey, i'm just 15."
So my captain started texting this dude. Sure enough "hello i am 14" (literally, "hello I am 14") was enough. He got the reply "U a female?"
That was all he needed. He called the Sheriff's office. Some pretty "seasoned" looking Deputies showed up, the local PD had a detective calling him out of class several times.
Eventually they caught some fat, bearded, man-thing and that's all I heard.
Damn that’s crazy. Should’ve reported him early on.

Honestly I love when he talks about his everyday expirences. My Aunt was a Detective with the Sex Offence Squad here for her whole career. The stories she would tell at holidays gave me so much respect for the service of these officers 😊

Dang, such a great post. As a single father of five after my wife passed away a little more than a year ago, unexpectedly. My children do some gaming online and I'm always attentive in what they're playing, who they're playing with and what's going on. It seems now a days parents can't ever be too safe.

@@hossv1147 no problem losing a loved is not easy. All you can do is move forward and it’s never easy. So I thought this small push could help you out a bit. Yes the internet is cruel and I’m no saint sometimes I fall into that cycle of unnecessary animosity towards others and I need to take a step back when I do that. I’ve been refraining to use cuss words less and it’s getting better still have my blemishes but I can fix it if I don’t give up.

I honestly can't imagine how the child sex crimes officers have the ability to witness the evidence they are required to endure... I am in tears at the simple thought of such action; no idea how someone could be strong enough to actually watch this horror
I would imagine part of the selection and training process for ICAC is a focus on mental resilience because that shit would fuck anyone up even a veteran that's been in ICAC for 10 or more years

With COVID, a lot of kids are online and could greatly benefit from parents who take action based on your insight. Thank you!

@@chrismadison305 I did too, then I had the iPad locked and told my kid to do it again. 4 seconds later, she was in and started to open my mother in law's emails. We all looked at each other, said holy shit! And then said that my kid is never being allowed alone with one of those again.

Yah ik certain states have their own state-wide cyber crime agencies.
I'm sure they all do scenarios similar to those found in "To catch a predator" where they have detectives online pretending to be underage teens and they setup sting operations to catch adults looking to have sex with a minor.

My parents respected my online privacy, I won't go into detail but I have reported people. I handled myself and my parents trust me to be smart. I was raised to be smart about it, I wasn't allowed to play games and communicate with other people until 16 or 17. I refuse to have certain social media to avoid predators

Thanks for posting this. Gonna show the highlights to my daughter, who is right in that age category these predators love. She's already a healthy level of paranoid (military family who don't mince words about the evil out in this world), but this is good support for that, having it come from a cop.
Can you do a followup bit specifically for children, teaching how to keep themselves safe? We've taught our kids the basics, but not everyone's parents are quite so attentive, and no doubt we missed something.

Love your channel and as the father to two amazing girls who are just starting to get online, these are amazing to see. I’d love to see you do a series of video geared towards pre-teens and teens, about the risks of the internet. Parenting can only go so far. Kids need to have their own set of tools to pull from to make good choices. We made our kids write us a persuasive essay on each App. they wanted, to also include all the pitfalls and risks. This helped our kids learn about the apps. on their own. We approved a few apps., denied far more but our kids were also able to self edit apps. When they learned about the apps. they’d often decide they didn’t want it any longer. I think your knowledge would give the parents and kids power.

Thank you for taking about this, its extremely important to bring awareness of the danger that kids could get themselves into. Its everyone responsible to protect children.
Parents be a parent not a friend. Go though everything your kids do it only take a small amount of time for your kid to be groomed let your kids know what can happen. It only takes a bit of time and you may never see them again because they trusted the wrong person and now are missing .
I’ll tell you my experience as a parent. After the Columbine shootings, I began to go through my daughters things-backpack, drawers, under, over & all spaces I could think of. This decision was due to some program I heard on TV. Did I find anything? Heck yes. A bottle of hard liquor under a mattress, drug paraphernalia in a backpack, nutmeg & a grater in a drawer (experimenting). I threw it all away. This really opened my eyes. No more privacy as long as they lived at home or were living on our dime. Mind you, they are very smart, high grades, 2-parent home, middle upper income. None of that mattered. And this was before everyone had a cellphone. Check on your children always. Discuss it with them. You won’t be sorry.
My parents should have checked on my sister and brother growing up because those two nutjobs were doing things they really didn't need to be doing certain things. I wouldn't say what I was doing was great either but my parents had an idea what I was doing. A lot of fishing and driving around. I sometimes the friends I had

Invasion of privacy creates very clever kids. The less privacy they have the more creative they become at hiding things so be careful when it comes that.
@@archie7027 and to all reading this...I think it depends on the child & your relationship. It depends on what & how you teach them. Are your expectations realistic? Do they know your expectations & the boundaries you set? There are many factors to consider. I would say there is not one answer. I want parents to know though, if your situation gets overwhelming & you don’t know how to handle it, seek professional help. I made an appointment with a therapist to help us all figure out why this was happening & what we could do about it. It usually comes down to feelings. Identify them & see how to cope with them in a healthy way. Our health care professional really helped& it was well worth the time & money. My kids are in their 30s now & doing fantastic. Good luck to all young parents.😊

Keeping kids safe on the internet: Log into the router as Admin, change the password if it is a first time login, set settings under parental control. Limit capabilities..
My dad actually showed me how he did that once I was through my teenage years cause I wanted to learn more about cyber security and stuff, really glad he did tbh, if I ever have kids I know a couple of ways to help protect them now

Having been a cybersecurity trainer, I have many, many examples of people who were astounded by some of the attacks I showed. The fact that they often aren't so hard to pull off, and that sometimes just a bit of confidence can go a long way for a bad guy.

my house, my rules. it doesn't make you a tyrant. you are responsible for everything that happens in your home. you are obligated to the safety of your family, especially a defenseless child. raise them to know it from the beginning so they trust your leadership, and it won't be something they resent when they're 15. 14 (& up) can be a horribly tumultuous age, so establishing trust for the first 15 yrs is important.
I'm glad you posted this. My wife and I are pretty nosy when it comes to our kids being online and our two kids learned to accept it after our youngest was targeted by a predator on Xbox. Needless to say, this dad didn't fuck around when I grabbed that head set and let some choice words fly. Keep doing what you're doing, 401. I know my wife and I fully appreciate what y'all do to keep kids safe.

I'm glad I saw this video. It led me to do a bit of research and now I know how easy it is for someone to find my information online and maybe a private instagram account isn't good enough. I'm 14 so my parents don't think it's necessary to monitor what I do online, but now I understand that I should still be responsible with what I post and who I talk to. Thanks for making this video.

I really appreciate you making this video, and a lot of people don't realize how close to home this kinda stuff could happen. Recently, the local PD was tipped off that someone was downloading CSAM videos and launched an investigation. Turns out, it was one of my coworkers. It was all over the news and, rightfully so, everyone around here was shocked and appalled. The reality of it is, predators are very hard to spot and are usually the kind of people that you least suspect being a predator. This is why it makes it that much more important to watch what your kids do online to ensure they are not another victim. Also, I really loved hearing about your technical background, you kinda seem a bit like me in that regard, but my hacking and things I did as a kid led me to being an A+ certified freelance computer tech as a secondary job and teaching my community about protecting themselves online. Even though I knew a lot about networking, programing, and security it's not something I saw myself doing as a profession because I always was more into helping people directly through the hardware side of things and being more of an advocate for everything else.

There is an ICAC task force in superior Wisconsin. Several surrounding agencies have become affiliated with them and I took an into to cyber crime class that was led by the chief of police of superior and was one of the officers that got this task force.
I know you can’t talk about your job a lot. Thank you for doing what you do. It’s not easy. I’ve had friends and family work in law enforcement in crimes against children units. I’ve heard stories and some of the things I’ve heard are sickening, and I couldn’t even imagine the trauma the officers experienced while working a case. I knew you mentioned PTSD that an be developed. I hope you can cope with anything you encounter on different cases. Thank you. Truly, thank you.

Great video brother. I work for a middle school (with some real varied demographics) and 3 of my 11 years here I worked at one of our district's inner city schools as well. A close friend of mine has worked for years with our sheriff department's cyber sex crimes investigation unit (now watching your vid I am sure they are linked up with ICAC)...it is sad and a little terrifying how much our stories and work experiences tend to run parallel...keep up the good fight my friend. These kids and their families depend on all of us with boots on the ground to be super vigilant...

I honestly cannot imagine how truly sick some people are, but I am thankful there are strong men and women out there doing what you do to help us keep our children safe. Totally agree, parents should be primarily responsible, but im glad you and others like you have our backs.

10:50 You can respect their privacy by being clear there is none online. As long as you are open about what you see and how you keep track (Maybe not too many details on that one) of them you are still respecting their privacy. If from the get-go you are open about this and explain why most children have no problem with it. In other words, trust is more important than "privacy" in a parent/child relation.
I think one of the problems is that many adults apply adult logic to it. Many do not realize how easy it is for a kid to fall into a rabbit hole that starts with a picture that is just a bit too exposed. And that bar is most likely lower for kids than adults. I mean a picture in my underwear being release to my co-worker is slightly embarrassing. It to be released to my classmates might have felt much worse when I was a kid. I can imagine if a child already has self-image issues that this bar might be pretty low.
I do not understand why parents take this approach of seeking consent from their children to change their diaper, clean their rooms, etc...and "respecting their privacy". Thank you for bringing up that point! Mind boggling.
I just want to say a sincere thank you for what you do. I know that your job can't be easy. It's lots of time and energy as well as having to go through evidence that is very hard to review but you have to to document everything. Because without it, it's harder to put away the bad people that do this crap. I will never understand why people think hurting anyone is ok especially children. These violators are leaving scars that will never go away. It sucks that we have to have people do the job you do because of the bad people out there but I'm glad we have people that do your job.

I'm a police officer in Texas and didn't even know what all ICAC did so I appreciate the information. Hard, but good stuff. I appreciate your content, time you put into it, and the passion you have for it. I don't have a suggestion for what's next. All I'll say is, I'm looking forward to what's next and keep it up brother.
Edit: I do actually have a video suggestion. What does the US Supreme Court say about officers interviewing minors? When can we and when can we not? When we can, how are we to interview them? Can we ask leading questions? Etc. I've run across these issues at work and I'd love to hear your expertise/understanding on it.
There is people saying "Defund the Police" this is just one reason why that should never happen....
Thank you for addressing this topic. I wish more officers would. I can preach about until I am blue in the face to my friends who have kids, but I don't think they take me seriously. I have shared a ton of Tim Ballard's videos trying to get the word and message out, but so much, I feel it falls on deaf ears. I would love for you to do more videos showing or describing for parents how their children can fall victim through different apps and video console equipment. I honestly don't even understand all of this stuff, but if I can share and save one child from becoming a target, then I feel I have succeeded in part of the fight on trafficking. Just getting people to understand how big of a problem this is in our country is also very important, especially with so many schools being virtual and kids being left home alone so much now.

First, I've gotta say, that ICAC mobile lab is badass. No delay in apprehending the suspect, seizing/searching their devices, and interviewing them. That is awesome.
Second, I (happily) have never had any encounters myself, but a lot of my female friends have gotten messages from creepy older men on social media (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc.). I've seen their messages, and some of the things these people say and do after learning they're talking to a minor is absolutely disgusting. Like, they know they're talking to a minor, but they don't seem to understand that what they are doing is wrong. It sickens me, some of the things people will say or do to a CHILD. (For context, I'm 18 now, and these conversations with creeps all happened a few years ago. They were all handled properly)

Thanks officer 401 for this video! My daughter was exposed to predators online years ago before we realized what had happened. We thought to have had a close watch on her activities but we didn't realize the curiosity and sneaky nature of a child. After that we installed parental apps and check all the activities on all of our devices.

My god, dude, we live the same life. I have the same disorders as you do, figured that out from one of your vids. We have the same internet background & technological interests. I've been wanting to be a cop since I was a little kid and, as of right now, I am a police explorer in a county in Georgia. We talk mostly the same way. And, from what I've seen, we have mostly the same interests in total. That's just insane to me and I had to share it.

Hearing you talk about your computer expertise reminds me of Constable Michelangelo (Spike) Scarlatti from the CTV series Flashpoint, a fictitious TV show based on Toronto PD's SWAT team. Spike is the computer nerd of the team and also know everything about bomb detonation.
