What do cops look for on duty?
I have been putting a single squirrel in every accident diagram I've written over the past 10 years. To be fair, there is a high likelihood that there was a squirrel in the general vicinity at the time of the wreck....
I genuinely laughed out loud in my office reading this.
Coyotes or Javalina in Arizona.
Here in North Carolina there's literally a 90% chance there was a squirrel nearby, believe me i know...as someone who routinely goes places with family and friends that get heartbroken when a squirrel is hit and killed, I've learned to watch for them like a hawk, and those little things are everywhere, so needless to say you've inspired me, once I get out of Trooper Academy and get to draw accident diagrams, there will be a squirrel in every last one.

Hey Detective401, I have to admit while listening to you I see a lot of similarities between officers in US and my country. I once spoke with a cop from Chicago when he visited our country for some kind of international co-op and he said that the training is very similar and the "looking through cops eyes" aspect is there on point too. Whenever Im on duty I always get involved in some kind of stuff, whether it is a burglary or drugs or other types of criminal activity mostly by beeing aware, besides the regular calls. Nice to see you are touching some other matters besides the cop stories. Anyways, gotta start the shift ;D

So happy to hear you say you don't care about weed. I remember 2 years ago all the cops in my town would arrest you for even a gram just to charge you with possession. But now since it's been legalized for medical, and decriminalized in my state(Illinois) my run ins with the police and my weed had only had my stash stepped on and my pipes thrown into the woods.

I would absolutely love to see a Video all about the Different types of Traffic stops from Felony stops to a Simple traffic stops and just things in between. I find that people don't understand the aspect of a Officer when they are doing a traffic stop. You see a lot of videos on UA-cam about Traffic stops. I’ve watched a few of your videos, I really appreciate your demeanor as in the City of Chula Vista California we have a few over zealous officers a couple of examples 1, writing a speeding ticket with a speed range 35-65, the Judge informed the officer he could not guess at the speed. 2, a training senior officer wanted the rookie office to agree on his assessment of reckless driving the rookie said he did not see that so I drove off.
You respect but others I absolutely do not. Thank you for being a great officer and restoring the faith.

stealthnight452 they were different vehicles than regular cruisers they were jeeps and Hondas (they were actually jeeps) they were all driving and the staties were behind them with some local police

Couple years back I used to manage a fast food restaurant. I always worked the closing shift meaning I wouldn't shut off the lights and lock the doors until around 1am. My closing shift was tight and after everything was cleaned and put away and the paperwork was done sometimes we would hang out outside and just shoot the breeze for a half hour. It was our way of unwinding. After about 15 minutes of us being out there this Sheriff's deputy pulls up. He walks over to us and asks us what we are doing. All of us are still in uniform and me being the manager I became the spokesperson. I told him we had just got off work and we are unwinding. I explained to him I am the manager. After that he sort of relaxed and began shooting the breeze with us answering our questions and sharing stories. We ended up talking with him for about a half hour and he than admitted that he was bored and just figured he would come over and see what we were about.

In the District of Columbia they don't take a report if both cars are able to drive away. The officers just tell you to exchange licenses and insurance information and that's it.

I was in a hit and run fender bender a few weeks back. I called the police and gave them their plate number. The report has a hand written diagram that's quite good with showing how the accident happened.
I really wish you drew it though. I'd love to have a helicopter in my police report.

Related (somewhat) story from Portland. I was heading to a museum (omsi) on a highway and we were slowing down and a woman texting on her phone hit us, our car hit into the car in front of us from momentum, and that car bumped into an undercover FBI agents car

For us if we are swamped with radio calls we have the two drivers take pictures with their phones of the damage and each other's info and swap phone numbers. This only for minor traffic collisions where no one is injured and the damage is superficial. Because most of the time the police are not need, just exchange your info with the other driver and let your insurance handle it, THAT"S WHAT YOU'RE PAYING THEM FOR.
