    Nice work as every my fine chaps, i think this episode is the push i needed to explore some vintage ports and sherries, got to try new things and keep the whisky industry supplied with quality casks!

    Loved the episode. I'm an ex-wine merchant who is fairly new to whisky. You might want to know that a good source of Sherry is a little-known wine shop called "The Whisky Exchange" 😉 Headed up by an excellent buyer, Dawn Davies, who is a Master of Wine. But don't forget Madeira; it will blow your mind 🤯

    Now that was more fun than I expected from 3 grannies sitting on the sofa with their crochet 😂😂😂
    I've had a number of ports over the years whilst visiting Portugal and of course as toast glasses on Military dinner nights (swing that lantern). I am a massive fan but unfortunately it no longer agrees with me (big gout sufferer) so this in turn prompted my transition to Whisky and I haven't looked back.
    Oh and my favourite presenter is Jeff Whisky 😂😂😂

    It so happens I’m in Porto now. The city is amazing and the Port houses are all here right in the centre on the Douro down from the vineyards upriver. You should come and see it and drink it here, it’s spectacular.

    As a teenager who regually drank Port & Sherry like fizzy pop when listening to the dulcet tones of classic rock and psychedelic music, I love a good dram of the dark berry fluid.
    As you say it’s not cool to order a port or sherry when out with your mates.
    But nowadays I do as I near 60yrs of age.
    A good tipple is a good tipple be it Whisky, Brandy, Port or Sherry.
    Great video and informative as normal.

    The first time I was given vintage port it knocked my socks off as I could feel the alcohol being absorbed through the mucous membrane of my mouth. The second time I had it was 35 years ago and I was given a pre war vintage which was possibly the best drink I have ever had. I then made the mistake of going into a shop to buy my own bottle. Astonished at the price I bought a very new vintage and was disgusted by the taste. I didn't realise that in those days you had to lay it down to age at least 10 to 15 years before drinking. These days (I don't know how) the maturation is much faster and you can easily drink a port 5 to 10 years old. I'm old school however and will always search out Grahams or Fonseca 1977 or 1985. Much older than that and you are talking serious money. If you do find a '63 from either of those houses however please tip me the wink. Great podcast, widening out the appeal of fortified wines to the general public, and good call that these need to be bought and drunk if you want to continue to see fine whisky with these finishes. Drink it or lose it.

      The trouble with port and sherry is that people won't buy as many bottles compared with whisky as it entails a greater vesting of intent. You really need to be prepared to drink it over a short period of time and so your £80-100 lasts less time. You can keep and enjoy a bottle of whisky for a year or more and not feel forced to finish it. Don't get me wrong I probably prefer vintage port over whisky yet only have half a dozen bottles racked up while I have 20+ bottles of whisky.

    Only ever had supermarket sherry and port at Christmas. Definitely something to explore especially with those prices!
    Side note, I’ll give my vote for Ian 😜

    Last time was a trio, white tawny and ruby from .... no idea what brand/house. All were okay but I liked the ruby best.
    In the past I've mostly had ruby port from Kopke and Graham's and quite like the stuff, but a bottle is a bit much for myself and whisky keeps forever. Port finished whisky gives us the best of both worlds

    Birth year bottles are slim pickings for me - 1982 was the height of a crash in the industry and it seems only independents like G&M or Glenfarclas were filling any casks at all....
    So maybe this Port thing is worth a look!

    Loved the episode guys! I try my best to sip port and sherry from time to time. Had a real phase of enjoying some Sherry from the supermarket (probs an Amontillado or Palo Cortado) with tonic - it really works 😅 Port (like Jake says) a bit more of a festive tipple. Know we all need to drink more to also help the whisky industry …just like cider too much 😂

    We have a bottle of 1965 PX at home ready to crack for Christmas. Like treacle apparently. Great episode, been banging on about making sherry cool for a while.

    I’m tried a few ports, sherries etc and, though interesting, they’re just too sweet for me (except PX on ice cream, banging). My wife has a wild sweet tooth though so I tend to buy them for her. Best thing I’ve tried in that wheelhouse was a vintage Madeira - amazing nose and complex palate, still too sweet for me but it stood out massively in terms of quality.
    White wines my malternative as - when the weathers hot - it can be served chilled and scratch that itch whisky can’t and actually refresh my palate. Personally love Chablis, very minerally and dry so really refreshing Slainte

      love a good Madeira! not that big a fan of white wines myself but always happy to explore. Bordeaux is my favourite so far

    loved this episode again, great value Ports! I love Port but it's been many many years since had some Vintage Port, must get some now for these long summer nights with a cigar. An episode on whisky cocktails for the summer would be great to see?

    I was already looking to try some port and sherry, after watching this episode I’m definitely picking up some this week. At the moment my favorite alternative to scotch is cognac.

    Great show I got a port 1967 at auction my birthday year not opened it yet but after your show I'm going to they say the 1966 was a vintage year and overshadowed the 67 hope you do one about brandy cheers 🍻

    Prefer port to sherry I feel as drinks in their own right. Prefer rum to both though. Like all their of their influence on whisky though….

      @@TheWhiskyBaron I have a selection of sherries. I use them to compare with a dram. Have all sorts px, oloroso, Palo Cortado, and so forth.
