Austin's voice is beautiful, perfect! It's a voice we recognize, his timbre is the same. I think Rob transformed, lol! I can always pick each member out in their songs, with my eyes closed. In this, "Gospel Rob" became "GOSPERA Rob"! I'm seeing Rob, but it took a second for my brain to make the connection... It was PERFECT!!!

Austin approached Rob to do this and had to convince him. Rob graduated from a performing arts college majoring in vocal performance and trained in opera. He was hesitant to agree because he hadn't sang it for 15 years. Austin graduated college with a degree in musical theatre performance. His professor's encouraged him to take opera but he wasn't inclined to do so. Austin wanted to show how talented Rob is in opera, thankfully Rob made a great choice to do this project. When any of the Home Free guy's are asked which member of the band is the most talented singer they all answer the same saying Rob. Please continue to check out Home Free because they sing many different genre's and are incredibly talented. I'll leave the suggestions to the other's in the comment section, you'll never be disappointed in any of their 200 + video's. Don't forget they are
a cappella when you listen to them! Thank you! ♥️😀

when they are on tour performing to their country music audiences, at midway through their usual sets, they need a pause point, come out in suits just like this video, and do this opera duet. I would love to be there and see all the jaws gaping open as the audience is stunned

These 2 gentlemen are from the 5 man a cappella group "Home Free" who are known for doing mostly country music but can actually sing any genre. After checking out the group, you will then appreciate these 2 men more singing opera which is completely out of their normal genre. My first introduction to the group was "Man Of Constant Sorrow". They have one of the best bass singers in the world & one of the best beatboxer vocal percussionists in the world. Please check them out.

It was beautiful. Who knew these boys could do opera?? We knew they could sing and sing well but I didn’t know they could project like this. Rob studied opera in college but that was years ago and he decided not to pursue it. Austin studied musical theater in college. Austin is a high tenor or what some operatic people say is a lyric tenor. Rob is a tenor. They are both wonderful. Loved it!😀

The Home Fries are, of course, so proud of Rob and Austin. They are fearless in going ahead and offering up an operatic selection. Both of them are more than capable, but still, opera is an extremely intimidating genre. We've heard the power and beauty of their voices, so for me, I wasn't a bit surprised to hear this performance. Even tho' Rob has operatic training, he hasn't performed opera in 15 years. Austin is a trained vocalist, especially in musical theater performance. I think they completely nailed this beautiful aria. Thanks for a great reaction.

I happen to really enjoy Nessun Dorma as well. Rob has such a sweet, soulful voice and they both have such a variety of talents that I wasn't surprised they could do this. Rob sings lead on a beautiful collaboration between Home Free and Texas Hill on "Dreamer". I think you'd really enjoy it.

Yes, this is insane. It is so extremely good. Fantastic.
Both are doing great, but Rob, I'm perplexed!!! His voice is just magical, so rich, so warm and powerful. Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. For me he will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers.
It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is.
Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible.
Even if you don't like opera, you have to like it. Maybe because it's so amazingly good, but not 100% perfect.

Years ago Rob's vocal coach said he could have a big career in Opera. Thank God he decided to join Home Free!!! One Italian reactor said she was so impressed she actually forgot they weren't opera singers or Italian.

Home Free fans used to have all kinds of Rob -- gospel Rob, bluesy Rob, country Rob, R & B Rob. And now we have opera Rob. Austin is Austin -- one of the best tenors around anywhere. HF has super arranger, Darren Rust and some of, if not the best, ad libs in their arrangements, too, imo. Thanks for letting us see your expressions during Rob's verses. It was great.

they need to inject this performance into their concert tours - would love to see audience reactions (will they be in stunned disbelief like so many of us on UA-cam?)
Have been a regular attendee to Seattle Opera in years past and this performance was to me top shelf relative to what I've seen. (why not an album release of some opera top hits)

Such a treat! But seriously, Rob sounds like a different artist than we hear when he sings with Home Free!
I don't care for opera, but these two "tried" and did what I didn't expect--they made me want to watch it over and over again. Who knew? 🤭

  • @DyvmSlorm

It's amazing listning and hearing the differences in where their voices are placed. Rob's is set further back in his throat (not down, just back) and resonates up through his whole skull. Austin's voice is placed more right behind his teeth and is projected straight out of his open mouth. The difference can be hard to hear but it gives Rob the fuller tone with resonance and bite while Austin has extra bite but less resonance. However, that suits the sound each is going for in this. Rob's is fuller while Austins is brighter.

Rob sang opera. Austin sang an opera aria within his musical theater training. Both lovely voices. But, if Rob had decided to pursue opera instead of acapella I am sure that he would have had a great career.
I'm glad he decided to do acapella. :)

Austin's voice isn't higher exactly.... It's "brighter" while Rob's has a darker, richer resonance. Rob had classical operatic training in college while Austin had musical theater education. In this performance, you can hear a difference but both work very well, especially together.

I really enjoyed your reaction, thank you! They really did a great job and their different voices - dramatic and lyric tenors -harmonized beautifully. I know that it’s heretical to say so, but I would rather listen to this than Pavarotti’s famous viral recording of this song. Pavarotti is technically flawless, but at least in that recording, he seems a bit weak in the lower registers and the delivery seems less emotionally compelling. I love Rob’s range and powerfully rich tonality, and Austin’s lighter lyric tenor seems to soar effortlessly. I hope they do more of the great tenor arias and introduce new people to the beauty of operatic singing.

Austin is a true lyric tenor, a fairly rare breed, and if he had stayed with opera would have made a fortune. Rob's voice, on the other hand, is lovely but a lot less in demand these days, as the Italian operas, for which that training was done, have become less fashionable. Austin has what the Italians call "spinto", a quality of incisiveness which can cut through other sound to enable the lighter voice to carry. Even in the area of traditional opera, lyric tenors are in demand. Unfortunately the general public seem to think you have to sing like Pavarotti or nothing, but these days opera composers like the greater agility and versatility of a lyric tenor. On one tiny note, i would have liked to see Rob open a bit more on his top notes - at a few points the sound became a little bit strangled.
Shout out too to Sebastien Douyon, who worked as arranger and producer. He will have used pre-recorded material, but every time you change your use of the song, the backing tapes have to be changed too, a hard and lengthy job.
