I really can't imagine living in here under lockdown! It's too tiny and many materials look cheap such as the floor and the curtain. Students deserve better spaces I think, even in Milan
"Cheap"? You mean "affordable"? All anyone does around here is bitch about how "expensive" the renovations are, as if for whatever reason they think renovations are free; but anytime NTS shows a small place with a low-cost renovation, people shit their pants over how "cheap" it is? This place was made for a student. Any student should be thankful to get an inexpensive, newly renovated place in such a populous city. You don't wanna live here? Ok, fine! Don't! This wasn't made for you anyways.
Hate the micro "couch" shoved under the prison-like staircase, and that they left just enough space for your phone to fall through the gap in the sleeping area. Overall this one is just extremely depressing and seems like an awful use of space. Who wants the nicest part of their apartment to be the bathroom?
I think they cant move the bathroom becuz of the pumbling, considering its an old buildings, and it looks like ita on top floor, its would be difficult and costly to move do another pumbling
This is the first small space that does not look comfortable. The stairs look over designed and painfully sharp, almost gold alchemy. The wood proportions are off, if the barn door has to slide into a box (?) line up the edges. Would love to see some measurements on the floor plan.
Idk I kinda feel anxious watching this.. the colors, the stairs, and I think the idea of opening the toilet for natural light gives me anxiety of smell, I also feel uncomfortable if I were studying in this room.. but thankyou for sharing this, I always love your channel
Anxious, yes. I had never seen a video of a living space that made me this physically uncomfortable. There's no windows! I felt trapped watching a video. Damn, scary movie directors wish they had this kind of power over audiences.
I’d hate to live in a place without windows you can actually look out from. Just windows on the ceiling. Makes it a very uncomfortable depressing place.
Why do you feel the need to brag? It’s a Temporary shelter for a student. Save money so you can buy a condo with larger space living and then you can brag.
That they didn't find a solution for getting the humid air out of the kitchen makes this a bad place for cleaning up. All the oil u use in cooking will get onto the cupboard, the wardrobe and eventually even into the living and sleeping area. Just eww
The probably assumed a student wouldn't cook much and mostly eat at the uni cafeteria, but I knew so many students who still cooked regularly. This kitchen is designed for people who don't cook.
Some wasted space & you are definetly hitting your head when you sit on that couch. And its ugly... Cero practicality for a student. Why opening doors when it can be sliding doors?
The sofa is actually a chair. It will only look like a sofa if you're feet are up facing the entrance to the staircase. This the first time I really disliked the design.☹️
Not a big fan of this one. A lot of nice ideas but not the correct space for them. Color palette is off as well. Over all it seem over crowded and not sleek or modular. The sliding door was the biggest concern for me. Thanks for sharing though.
My thoughts (having lived in a dorm 3 years, and studio after): the stairs are too bulky and too dark, I would rather use movable furniture that one can rearrange according to the needs instead of all those built-in, and definitely a frosted glass door for the bathroom to keep the natural light from that tiny window without seeing the sink. Blue floor? No! No no no. Same for the burgundy curtain and all that laminate wood. It's all _eating_ the light instead of bouncing it.
what kind of architect thinks painting the floor in one single color, and have that color be BLUE, is a good idea? it´s like the floor on my kindergarden...This one was a terrible, terrible adaptation.
As a student, in your room you only really need two places: the main place is your desk, with the computer, your books, notes, things you use every day; and the second place is the bed. Who needs a TV when you have a laptop and a smartphone? Who needs this wooden structure which they call "sofa"? Who needs this staircase which takes half of the room? As a student, I lived in small places, but this one - I would not live in, thank you very much.
I'm sorry, i don't like this at all. The staircase looks like something from a prisoncell 🙈 And the colors, damn, it's so wrong. It looks better before the renovation.
It's surprising how much has been squeezed into that small area, though I agree with other commenters that there's a lack of study space and comfortable seating. I suppose I'd spend a lot of time in bed while studying. As also noted below, this is better than sharing a run-down one-bath apartment with four or five others.
Very impressive. What I like best is that old buildings are not tore down. I wish here in America we showed more interest in saving old architecture. Well done!
I was thinking they couldve done a warm tone -similar to the wood for the floor or even black to match the stairs. Then the curtain could a nice light color. And bam, it wouldnt look horrendous
While I agree with much of the criticism in the comment section this did achieve something very noteworthy; it's the first space covered in this channel that actually matches the name. In every other video you have people commenting that "it's not even that small" or something to similar effect, in this one people feel it's too cluttered. As a tiny house enthusiast I certainly agree their use of space could have been more effective but I hope this episode indicates the channel will cover more spaces in the future that are actually "Micro."
Should've designed the stair case like tiny homes do, to incorporate more storage space into them. I'd have the stairs narrower with cabinets under them, have a section of it open up to reveal a TV/monitor and under that have a desk surface that flips up to study at. There would maybe be enough room for a comfortable sofa.
The ledge under the TV seems like a waste of space. I feel like it maybe could have been extended and turned into a desk. The TV also seems useless, since there’s not a proper place to sit and watch it.
@@arvidjohansson3120 it really depends on the location, I couldn't get where in Milan this place is based on the building they show outside, but similar apartments can go up to €180k starting from no less than €80k or so.

Love the kitchen ! So tiny but somehow so comfy. I know this wouldn't suit everyone, but I personally would have prefered using a ladder incorporated to the wall to go up the loft, which would alow more space into the living area that feels tiny to me as it is. In my opinion, the stairs just take too much place visually. But using a ladder everyday is not to eveyrone's taste, so I understand the choice of stairs, I would have wished for it to be more discreet though.
The apartments showcased on this channel are charming when they’re designed by or for the intended resident of the home. This episode has the bitter taste of landlords experimenting with what they can get away with. It will be a tragedy if more efficient design in use of space becomes just another tool for landlords to exploit renters.
Like I can imagine a loft to be cozy. Like having your bed up there, some nice lights and stuff. But this design just destroys all the possibilities of making it cozy
I appreciate the effort to reuse an empty space under the roof, but this was clearly not designed for students. First of all the only library is the one next to bed (really small I should say), the times are changing and as students the books are being replaced by digital material but you do need some space for the books/notes, moreover the table seems uncomfortable (you can't even look outside of the window to take a deep breath of air, especially in these periods in which the libraries are closed). The one-seat sofa is really depressing, you can't even invite one friend over to drink a beer :/ The closet in the "kitchen" ? Why would you like your clothes to smell like onions or whatever you are supposed to cook? The colors and use of wood make the space look smaller than it already is. As a student I would prefer to live with other people in a larger house (paying less I suppose), instead of this. I think this space is ok for short-term bnb use or someone who needs just a space to sleep and that's it.
this is a great use if such a small space,,, really sad to see so many negative comments in the past couple of videos. looks like people who genuinely dont like small spaces nor see the use in renovating one have found this channel and filled it with negativity, how sad. but i think a lot of us can still see the beauty in innovation. small spaces aren't meant to be perfect or the most over the top comfortable and forever-homes. they accommodate people that can afford only that in the tine being, in the classiest way possible. keep it up, as always is a joy to see and dicover new architecture that makes this world a little bit more interesting.
giving the circumstances and the context, i think its an ok apartment for an estudient. I would prefer the stair to be a little less of a cage, maybe just having the estructure on the side of the wall. Also, the side table of the bed could have a different design so the natural light could enter easily to the bed. they did a good job, but a place with no visuals to the exterior is a big no for me.
I don't know where all these complainers studied but my dorm was smaller and we shared the bathroom and kitchen with four persons. This is a luxury villa compared to mine and in Milan of all places. I could study at my university so no problem with the size, the colour or the stairs. It's beautiful in a designed way.
NOT commenting about the project - But am amazed with the consistency in the way ALL the videos on this channel, are shot and edited. Even more commednable since the shoots are probably being remote managed during the pandemic. Even the way the Designer opens cabinet doors and then gently walks away is precisely the same across ALL videos - WOW!
As far as the stairs go, they could have followed the tiny house movement and used a ladder. Make the upstairs space a study nook and with the space you have now reclaimed from no black, metal monstrosity, could put in a futon sofa/bed.
Better than a ladder or a stair, I mean a conventional stair, is a European stairway, also known as an alternating stair Step system. Google it, you will be delighted. For some reason they are rarely done. I am doing one right now for a client and I have two in my home. They are totally illegal in America as with just about everything else in this bureaucratic nightmare. For my clients I do these things on the sly, whether they be a government loving liberal or a government hating conservative, ha ha! One thing you need them for sure, if the bureaucracy is going to affect their freedom and their pocketbook, they will go underground.
This is an important design. I live in a dense urban setting surrounded by thousands of people that would love a place like this to call home. Most city dwellers spend a lot of their time outside of the home and only minimal accommodations are needed. Sleep, eat, relax and bath are the only things I do at home. Work, hobbies, exercise and socialization are all done in a different place.
There may have been some regrettable design decisions made here. From my point of view this is a great example to learn from 😊 And it’s still an improvement from the original uninspired “design”. I’d rather live in a Japanese Train than in some furniture storage room 😂
Not very good design i think... It feels lot more conjested and somehow feels like a cage, considering that floating stairs, small loft space and yeah no window....maybe they could have provided a different zoning and they forgot the most important thing - a study space considering the apartment is for a student. No student will spend their time on that apartment
Wow, I’m surprised at the many negative comments! If I could have had my own kitchen and bathroom in such a small space as a student, I would have been very happy! Even your own washing machine! There is plenty of space for books and clothes as well. A different color curtain is an easy change. I would have opted for a ladder probably so you have more seating space. Still, the majority of student housing I have seen is so much worse. Maybe depends where you come from.
It's a clever use of space definitely . But perhaps this is the first really too small apartment on the never too small channel. :) Tye wardrobe next to the kitchen is a bad idea, I think. I wonder if it could have been switched - the wardrobe to be on the base of the stairs and then some sort of spiraling stairs or a ladder to the platform. And yes, study space is missing, too.
@@SchizophrenicFrankie No, overall I still think that given what they had in the beginning, they did a good job. The cleverness comes from even being able to come up with this setup in such a small space. The three points are just things that I don't like or wouldn't do (although I'm not even a designer).
From "The existing room was without any characterization" to a room that is loud on CHARACTER. I'm sure there's always someone who'd love a creepy/bold space but seeing the comments, I'm relieved why I couldn't breathe while watching this. 😦
As much as I like the design of the metal staircase, I think an alternating tread staircase would have been a better option. The built ins and the materials are done very well and the design details are well thought out. I commend them on getting a washingmachine into such a small unit. And the motorized window and blinds are a nice touch.
Dear Clark: I thought I would never see someone else mention an alternating staircase, also known in America as “European staircase.“ It is almost always the best solution to a small sleeping space or space that is not used frequently.
I saw a lot of "suggestions" or rather, complaints abt it but... I gotta say, for them to reconstruct everything that much is great. Just look at how it was in the first place, it's a miracle it looks much better.
Very well done, only criticism is the lack of desk space and being a current uni student I cannot emphasise enough how crucial that is. Would like to see the couch area being widen and exhchanged for a desk.
The metal staircase would be the one thing I would replace. I've seen much better solutions for climbing to the sleeping loft. A retractable staircase or ladder would be better. Also the seating space underneath the staircase looked constricted. The big loft window was an excellent choice allowing plenty of light into the apartment.
This is a very smart and spacious looking design. I read a lot of comments about the stairs, but I think it was designed out of need, to meet building regulations. The Loft bed is too high for a ladder to meet standard (and renewed) building regulations. In The Netherlands, this kind of height requires the same regulation as stairs leading up to a floor, meaning it must have a railing. I think the same goes for Italy and perhaps it is an EU rule.
I appreciate how they develop a very small space. Some people have a lot of comments about the stairs, color of the floors or whatever. But I really like it. I can live there.
It kind of reminds me of a vip train room/cubicle. Really prefer the floating stairs to be smaller? The sofa looks cramped and uncomfortable to seat two people. The person sitting would probably bump their head multiple times on it. That staircase space could’ve been good for storage- clothes and misc or a study desk (since this is place is intended for students. The closet in the kitchen could just be used as a pantry and for other misc items
I was hoping for a wider bench under the TV, this way the student can spread out and study. Otherwise, a very nice flat. Albeit small, the student can function in this space without much hindrance.

@@agnespethes as a student myself, you highly underestimate how much space and materials you end up needing. If you seriously want to study, you don’t want to be moving things back and forth just to have enough room. This may be student accomodation, but often they tend to me more expensive then other rooms because of their convenient location so you would want to get your money’s worth and have everything you need. Take this pandemic for example most universities and the facilities are shut and for a lot of students who signed on a 6+ month lease are stuck studying online with what they’ve got.
@@agnespethes if there is so much room to study as you say, why would you use the University library instead? Also don’t lecture me on what is and isn’t enough space to study in, because you’ll find many people agree with me
Taking liberties calling that square foam under a metal staircase a “Sofa” 😂
It looks like you could easily brain yourself with that metal staircase.
I really can't imagine living in here under lockdown! It's too tiny and many materials look cheap such as the floor and the curtain. Students deserve better spaces I think, even in Milan
Somebody invented this just yo live off student rent and would expect the student to leave on weekends and during holidays
Anyone else anxious about dropping a phone through that hole next to the bed?
The first thing I thought....and my Mac.....and the dog.
And don't put anything on that top shelf
Hate the micro "couch" shoved under the prison-like staircase, and that they left just enough space for your phone to fall through the gap in the sleeping area. Overall this one is just extremely depressing and seems like an awful use of space. Who wants the nicest part of their apartment to be the bathroom?
I think they cant move the bathroom becuz of the pumbling, considering its an old buildings, and it looks like ita on top floor, its would be difficult and costly to move do another pumbling
Agree! That stair makes the space look so much smaller and cramped.
I am OK with no window, as long as there is enough air to breathe. With no window, you get no fresh air.
Feels like suffocating
Agree. The shelf in the second floor takes too much space
It looks like their inspiration was a 90's cubicle office space. I know it's for a student, but this isn't a space I'd be bragging about.
It feels outdated and cold. I don't think any student would enjoy this space.
Just eww
And the wardrobe is right there where you cook!
Would you like to use this opportunity to apologize?
I must admit I found this depressingly small: the sofa only seats one and is the wardrobe in the kitchen?
The sofa is actually a chair. It will only look like a sofa if you're feet are up facing the entrance to the staircase.
This the first time I really disliked the design.☹️
@@sdgidney4139 Fetal Position is preferable it seems
@@DemarcoElliot perfect for a student to cry whenever they fail a test or something as well :'v
It's just terribly designed.
Feels like a ship cabin.
My new standard for judging these videos: could I be in a COVID lockdown in this place? This one fails the test.
Super interesting insight!
what kind of architect thinks painting the floor in one single color, and have that color be BLUE, is a good idea? it´s like the floor on my kindergarden...This one was a terrible, terrible adaptation.
Agreed. They took a “spacious” space and made it into a claustrophobic space with no nice design features. Must have been made on a tiny budget
Have I just spent 4 hours watching their videos? Yes.
Do I regret it? Also yes. I have a test tomorrow that I should be studying for.
the space below the staircase and the landing looks like such a good place to cry
Tiny houses on wheels know how to make great use of staircases, I'd love to see something like that in here.
Very impressive. What I like best is that old buildings are not tore down. I wish here in America we showed more interest in saving old architecture. Well done!
The color of the floor + curtain kinda gives me anxiety! C'mon keep it light and a little student friendly. It should feel fresh and warm.
ahahah yes!!! totally agree
I was thinking they couldve done a warm tone -similar to the wood for the floor or even black to match the stairs. Then the curtain could a nice light color. And bam, it wouldnt look horrendous
Finally the sub 40m2 apartments are getting the attention they deserve on this channel. Not the best one, but not another big apartment. Thank you
To all non europeans or non asians here, having this kind of space is the norm for lots of students and even to lots of young workers in big cities
Its such a waste as it is atm. Can't event use the wall space to ahng stuff cause of the stupid bars.
if my professors saw that I put a seating area underneath a staircase, I would have already failed architecture school
Nice design! I just wonder why there is no proper desk in some way. I mean, I really need to have a desk as a student.
I live in Milan and rest assured that this is not a place a student could afford.
@@DavideTarasconi well, that makes this apartment even worse then...
@@DavideTarasconi How much would the apartment cost?
The ledge under the TV seems like a waste of space. I feel like it maybe could have been extended and turned into a desk. The TV also seems useless, since there’s not a proper place to sit and watch it.
@@arvidjohansson3120 it really depends on the location, I couldn't get where in Milan this place is based on the building they show outside, but similar apartments can go up to €180k starting from no less than €80k or so.
I recently bought a micro appartement, 9sqm, it's a challenge and I love it. This channel keeps giving me some inspiration !
who chose these colors ?! Can someone explain me where do you store your clothes in this flat ? Looks like students don’t need many clothes hahah not a big fan of this restoration
I can see the idea and the skills required to pack all of those functions into 10-14 sqm, but I still feel that forcing people to live in such a closet is not really moral
No one is being forced, you can always share a bigger place or go solo and pay accordingly. What you won't have is central location + large, unexpensive individual accommodation, so you'll have to consider your priorities.

This looks extremely uncomfortable and cramped
Love the kitchen ! So tiny but somehow so comfy.
I know this wouldn't suit everyone, but I personally would have prefered using a ladder incorporated to the wall to go up the loft, which would alow more space into the living area that feels tiny to me as it is. In my opinion, the stairs just take too much place visually.
But using a ladder everyday is not to eveyrone's taste, so I understand the choice of stairs, I would have wished for it to be more discreet though.
Student housing. They might have been concerned that a ladder wouldn't have been as safe.
The apartments showcased on this channel are charming when they’re designed by or for the intended resident of the home.
This episode has the bitter taste of landlords experimenting with what they can get away with. It will be a tragedy if more efficient design in use of space becomes just another tool for landlords to exploit renters.
i agree, the apartment is beautifully designed but that little space is inhumane. design is being used to mask greed.
I actually found this to be quite fascinating and liveable contrary to most comments here.
Sad waste of a lot of the space, especially considering how small that place is but thanks for sharing.
She described the bed as "the protagonist". I love architects. :D
As a big man with claustrophobia, I would have bumped my shoulders trying to climb that staircase and immediately got a new dorm room
Finally some real practical interior video (after several days since I first click on 'Little John' video).
Sorry ngl, this home is the definition of depression
and anxieties
Totally dude
I so agree
No actual windows, you would go insane in a couple of months
Like I can imagine a loft to be cozy. Like having your bed up there, some nice lights and stuff. But this design just destroys all the possibilities of making it cozy
Yasss!!! Finally you make videos about micro apartment (under 20sqm) ❤️ thanks
Turns out it can be too small :/ I've seen jail cells with more love and care put into comfort.
How was the food in your jail cell then?
It's less than 3x5 room and wow that looked soo spacious. Good job on the architect and interior designer
Brilliant compact but everything you need! The sky light is a key design
Staircase is amazing. It's there but its transparency making the room look spacious.
And yes, study space is missing, too.
so it's not a clever use of space, because you've already pointed out 3 major flaws with it.
@@SchizophrenicFrankie No, overall I still think that given what they had in the beginning, they did a good job. The cleverness comes from even being able to come up with this setup in such a small space. The three points are just things that I don't like or wouldn't do (although I'm not even a designer).
Finally something SMALL
I think we may have found a limit to the idea of **never** too small.
Like if IKEA did prison cells.
From "The existing room was without any characterization" to a room that is loud on CHARACTER. I'm sure there's always someone who'd love a creepy/bold space but seeing the comments, I'm relieved why I couldn't breathe while watching this. 😦
I think a built-in ladder instead of that stair would make a huge difference.
I honestly like this a lot. I don't understand why everyone's so negative in the comments
I don't think I like that there is only that one window in the ceiling.
Very well done, only criticism is the lack of desk space and being a current uni student I cannot emphasise enough how crucial that is. Would like to see the couch area being widen and exhchanged for a desk.
I would have loved an apartment of this size and with this layout when I was in graduate school.
First small apartment and not clickbate👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Finally a really small apartment... not a huge fan of the blue floor, but I think they did a decent job, given the size!
You should know, when I'm all stressed and wound up, your videos help me take a breathe. :)
The metal staircase would be the one thing I would replace. I've seen much better solutions for climbing to the sleeping loft. A retractable staircase or ladder would be better. Also the seating space underneath the staircase looked constricted. The big loft window was an excellent choice allowing plenty of light into the apartment.
She is really pretty and has a touch of elegance
The layout makes me feel claustrophobic, tbh. Cant wait to get out of there for some air.
The floating box is definitely got my heart!
Hey thanks for pointing that out! That could very much be the (stair)case. Eheh
The motorized skylight is very cool
A wardrobe right next to the kitchen. What an amazing insight!
Since I love bacon, I'll always smell like it.
Lovely project btw.
This is the first one that I actually think IS too small.
Please change background of your plans impossible to see anything
They designed this for students but forgot the most important that a student needs... a DESK
Everyone in the comments hates this apartment, but it looks very comfy to me, I would live there:)
