Located at the top of a heritage protected building in one of Lisbon's oldest industrial areas, the aptly named Marvila attic was completely transformed by KEMA Studio using sustainable, durable materials like fibre cement panels, metal and brick. Focusing on opening up the space and maximising natural light, KEMA removed all internal walls, creating an open-plan layout with seamlessly integrated kitchen, dining, and living areas. Nestled under the sloped roof, the living room features a full height storage wall, with a clever niche for a sofa that doubles as a single bed. A section of the kitchen is hidden within the living room storage unit and revealed by sliding pocket doors. The addition of 4 new skylights, two dormer windows and the clever placement of mirrors illuminates the space creating an open and airy atmosphere. With its clever design, this apartment optimises space and light without compromising comfort, making it a true gem in Lisbon's industrial heart.

We are so happy to see our handmade ceramics in this NEVER TOO SMALL!
We are a small ceramics brand in Portugal whose pieces are made by people that are or used to be incarcerated. We believe that fair labor and empowerment are key for the (re)integration of the prison community. Thank you for believing in second chances!
That’s so special and we move them ! ❤️ thank you for sharing your story with us .

The before pictures really show the work that has been put into this. From a bleak, depressing apartment where dreams go to die to a beautiful, airy and dreamy space!
Wow, I love what the architects have achieved in such a small difficult space. The hidden storage is abundant throughout the apartment and I’d love to lay in bed and watch a lightning storm
Yeeess I thought about that too!! It would be such a great way to fall asleep :)
What a joy and honour to film and work with @nevertoosmall on this Lisbon apartment video! Thank you for choosing me as your videographer here. It was also great to work with KEMA architects. Super thrilled that Lisbon is featured in this amazing channel. Love this city. 💛 Keep up the amazing work on this channel!
Breathtaking lines and diffusion of light. The space is almost sculptural but not pretentious. I could rewatch this all day 😍
I love the recessed sofa, integrated storage and partly hidden kitchen. Light and lines and airiness in such a limited space is lovely.
They have done an amazing job despite the challenge of working with so many wall and ceiling angles. I especially love the integrated storage wall in the living room and being able to have part of the kitchen hidden away definitely streamlines the room and makes it appear more spacious.
I didn't know I needed a skylight over my bed until now. *Mindblown*
This was a very awkward space, and I love that they embraced it and leaned into it. I love attic spaces because of the interesting lines created by the eaves and dormers. A favorite touch for me is the narrow niche shelf in the bedroom that is clearly only there to accommodate the air vent in the ceiling. But how fun to make it a little niche shelf!
i love how this apartment gets so much light from the skylights and windows... kudos to the architects for creating such a cool space!
The layout is great, the storage wall looks beautiful and very functional. And all the windows make this apartment so sunny! Polish girls rocks!
Pretty, but I am absolutely certain that it'll be a greenhouse during the (long and very warm) Lisbon summer. I wouldn't be able to sleep in that bed, it feels like a tomb. I also wonder how would someone make the bed or change sheets and how would anyone feel comfortable in this bathroom (how would they sit on that toilet seat without banging their head on the skylight, for example?). For sure the architects did the best they could given difficulty of the space, so kudos for that!
Per a reply to another comment, the channel says it is well insulated.
I've showered in a coffin sized stall. It's impossible to shave one's legs, but other than that it works.
Anyone taller than average would not be able to wash dishes (unless the skylight is fully open).
The shower is 115 per 80 cm (it uses the space behind the vanity) and actually it has even a built-in bench. The height in the front of kitchen sink where person stands is 1,85m to 2.00m high. It´s actually very comfortable. The roof window provides this extra hight.
@@Nyx773 IMO, the insulation won't be enough. It will need air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep it cool.
Lindo!!
This made me cry, as a fan of the channel never ever i thought i would ever seen an apartment from Lisbon in here. So proud!
Such a beautiful city, with so much culture.
They did an amazing work, i hope more people in Portugal can be inspired by this video.
Obrigado ❤️
"this made me cry" lol a mim o que me faz chorar são os valores das rendas em Lisboa... Viver num micro-apartamento é muito lindo para o youtube mas na maior parte dos casos não são desenhados por profissionais como este, são degradados, escuros, húmidos e sem condições nenhumas de habitabilidade... Enfim. Gosto de ver a criatividade demonstrada no vídeo mas meter pessoas a viver em caixas de sapatos fixes não é lá muito inspirador na minha opinião. Não deixam de ser caixas de sapatos.
I Would cry too if i lived in Lisbon🤣,we know are a true european country, we have houses like nyc now (barely livable)
Heavenly!!! All that storage, without feeling cluttered, while also adding beautiful visual touches like the tiles behind the couch.
Absolutely stunning.
Hope they insulated the heck out of it -- loft spaces get HOT
I was thinking that.❤ In Portugal as well🌞
True true. I love the amount of sunlight but I hate the heat.
Lisbon, weather is like SF....I bet it's perfect.
Insulation is smart.
Finally something from my beloved Lisbon ❤
as nice as the abundance of sunlight is, i could see myself rugged up on a stormy night watching nature do its thing through the sky lights
What a beautiful streamlined space, that is very cozy feeling.
The installer did a thorough job installing and had some good tips on how to help preserve the shed. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx8CcyN6o1ejzQFIkabM3kaq93DfYKBg7z The product looks nice, cannot attest to the quality, it has been 3 days.
This is a stunning transformation in my view and one of my favourite apartment renovations featured here. The Architects have taken full advantage of the space, the view, incoming light and internal reflection of light. A wonderful use of space using thoughtful, crisp design elements. And what a beautiful part of the world. I Love everything about it!
The amount of hidden storage is amazing, and so perfectly integrated in every corner - I love it!
Overall airy design and modern lines are inspiring, IMO one of the nicest apartments featured on this channel.
Love it! A lot of natural light coming into the apartment. It makes it look so bright and full of life
Super impressed! The bed would make me feel a little claustrophobic but otherwise I’d move in in a heartbeat. Skillfull job
I think this is an excellent example of an adaptation of a small space into modern useful and pleasant apartment. Making use of all sorts of nooks for additional storage is an additional plus!
Glad to see they have thought of black-out screens on the windows.
I love that they took advantage of the skylights to give the space a feeling that it's larger than it actually is. Having a low ceiling matters much less when there's always a widow with a nice view.
The natural light coming in is crazy, it's so easy to let light fill our homes. Truly brilliant, makes it look like such a bigger space.
Having lived in a 1935 farmhouse with an attic second floor, I feel the pain of those angled walls. They did an excellent job of using the few tall spaces (shower!) and putting built in cabinets into those 'bang your head' awkward spaces.
perfect one person minimalist space
Being able to watch the stars at night is such a blessing 💙
What an unbelievable transformation! The architects are magicians to be able to convert such an odd shaped space into a very pleasant and functional space!
Panie Architektki - świetna robota!
Nicely done! As a former resident of Lisbon, having sufficient natural light at home is such a nice benefit. If I could change one thing it would be either the color or the material used for the storage space in the living room and kitchen areas, as it gives the appearance of cardboard when all the doors are shut.
Liked it a lot. I'd preffer an open L shaped kitchen instead of that half hidden one, but appart from that, everything they've done with such a small and difficult space is amazing. It seems much bigger that it is.
I agree, I wouldn't like having the cooktop in a closet.

Very exciting re-dedign of an awkward space. They have ticked all the boxes and with grest effectiveness. I particularly love the 'storage-activity wall'! Brilliantly conceived. Congrats to the architects. Wishing them continued success. Thank you for the video. All the best with the new app. G Ire
This is my favorite NTS property yet!
Love Lisbon. More people are relocating to Portugal. These architect designers did a brilliant job by using all these unusual interior features while incorporating natural elements, blue sky, sunlight, air to bring bright light into the original darker space. This is a marvelous transformation👏
I'm so happy that finally a Portuguese home was featured!!
This was such an awkward apartment to work with, with the low, angled ceiling making the already small space feel even smaller. But the architects were able to make it work very elegantly by bringing out the charm of the attic with the unique cupboards and skylights. Bravo!
I am blown away by both the fine lines and use of dimension to create a very attractive space. 👏🏽
Every inch of this space is considered and tastefully designed. So beautiful!
Love the way how this quiet difficult appartement comes to life. The wall long cabinet with it s different functions...visual neutrality by materials and colour scheme . Like the metal structure around the bathroom sink. Very original
I really love this home, it looks so cozy without being too cramped.
what a beautiful, bright, calming space. I love what has been done to make it seem very airy and bright and welcoming.
The best usage of mirrors to give the illusion of a large space i've seen. It fooled me into thinking there's a space there instead of a mirror, multiple times. I think it's because they are put in the right positions and they're edge to edge with no borders
I got the same feeling, which made me watch it again. A big part of the reason it feels so convincing in making you feel like "there's a space there instead of a mirror" is camera / editing trickery (not seeing the person with the camera in the reflection). I wonder how well the "illusion" works in person.
Such a clever design. It manages to feel effortless, and comfortable and sleek all at the same time which takes huge skill. Hats off to the architects
Very attractive and light-filled apartment. Sofa looks very uncomfortable though, especially as the window opens inwards.
I like the way it takes advantage of the space, I think it's a good idea to put built-in furniture, plus the lighting strategy with its sloping deck is incredible
The texture/lines in the material used for the storage wall is gorgeous. I also like the pull-out cupboard just inside the door for coats and shoes.
Everything looks perfect, the colors are very cozy despite the design being rather minimalistic and there's even a desktop! (even though I would place a bigger one perpendicular with the natural light source instead of in front of it)
I liked everything besides the bed, I noticed I was bowing my head inconciously when I saw the low ceiling 🤣
I can see myself forgetting the low ceiling and hitting my head in bed.
What an impressive use of a supremely compromised space. Bravo to the designers!
Give them all the medals right now. Amazing work!
so many "wooowww" comin out my mouth while watching this! lovely!
this is gorgeous and I'm so impressed. The only thing I'd change is the computer desk; I would probably change it to command position :)
All the natural light is 🤩
This is just brilliant. I'm so happy there are people like you giving life to places like this. I'd like very much to see more of your work 😊
This is gorgeous with an outstanding notion of space and excellent storage ideas! Love it. Bravo ladies 👏🏻👏🏻♥️
Hands down the best small apartment. So amazing.
I remember this one! that fantastic gable, with its seat, and the best piece of wall art I have ever seen...
they did a splendid job, the light they created is simply amazing
This is such a pretty and unique space. I love all the light and slopes of the walls/ceiling. Well done!!!
This turned out beautiful. What a clever and aesthetic redesign.
Wow! That was exquisite! One of the very best I've ever seen! Congrats to those gifted girls!
Love this loft appartment. Everything is tucked away neat and tidy, yet it feels warm and welcoming. Definitely stealing that bed / couch wall idea for an attic conversion :)
This is marvellous!
Niesamowita robota, przepiękny projekt i wnętrza, gratulacje Dziewczyny! 💕
So, so lovely. A great solution to a difficult space.
This project is amazing. Very stylish and yet so functional, excellent job.
This is a great apartment. Well done to the architects. 👏👏👏
This apartment is truly wow!
I feel like in half of NTS videos designers give no regard for how easy it is to make the bed. It's beautiful but this one especially seems like a challenge.
Making the bed is overrated ;) But I always wonder: why are there no hand rails near the stairs? It looks so dangerous and you can never have visitors who need them to be able to walk up and down..
I think it's a good use of that awkward space, wouldn't know what else to put there with no walking hight. But I would probably make the bed custom and put on castors so you can wheel it/ pull it away from the wall to make it easier to change the bedding, or so that you can get in from either side - if there were two of you in the bed, one does not need to climb over the other to get out in the night. There seems to be space around the bed to move it which is good.
I couldn’t quite get my head round how you got into the bed and which way you slept! Feet to window or crossways🤷♀️
I think it’s just the footboard of the bed that is an issue. It could definitely go without it and it would make getting in/out and moving around it a lot easier and comfortable. It would also be easier to make the bed without the footboard.
@@grigorisgirl Yes, you can't get your "head round" to it because when you go to make the bed, your skull will be flattened from hitting the ceiling 🔴🔜🟥
This is brilliant! I love the integrated sofa area (looks so comfy) in the storage wall which is a wonder storage wall! And all sky-windows...
What an amazing renovation! 👏🏽
i really love the sloped roof and skylights design
Amazing renovation of a difficult space
I love this. A dream for me in my cold climate. One day!
Sending support, love, and kindness from Lexington, Michigan, USA.
This is exceptional work, bravo!
Bright, clear and neat!
Truly beautiful and fully functional
When you have an angled roof it is tricky. Very.
They have done a great job.
And mirrors do the magic, every single time.
Thank you. :)
(The Eames lounge chair is a big bonus!
I can not live without it).
That’s an incredible transformation!
Really lovely maximization of light and storage. Quite a welcoming space--bravo!
It’s not very often I found a modern project cozy, but this one made me want to live there. Funnily enough, it has always been a dream of mine to have huge skylights above the bed, so I could see, and hear, the rain right close at me…
I'm in love with this flat really ❤❤❤
Amazing clever space. My favourite has to be the airy light using the skylights plus the white and wood contrast. Well done I could move in tomorrow
This is the BEST, MOST STUNNING remodel ever!
I think this place is terrific - *dynamic, cozy. Good job.
Great work by the architects. The apartment looks so airy. The skylights are awesome
Útil, practico y con encanto. Parece agradable volver a casa, aunque sea pequeña es suficiente.
Brilliant use of space and light and hidden storage - which is so practical! A simple and elegant but sensible! One idea I had is the space near the kitchen - with the window ...instead of a trolley with plants (which the scale is off - needs to be bigger IMHO) instead have a hanging herb garden! Love this creative work!!!
One of my favorites! Congrats! 🎉❤
Nice! Good job ❤🎉🎉
The skylights are really beautiful =)
amazing loved all the natural light it gets
Toilet mirror aside, I really like this one!
Outstanding result. Bravo!
This was fantastic! What an amazing use of space.
Great job ladies 👏🏼 space looks beautiful
Absolutely gorgeous space and what clever use of the space and storage ❤😊
What a wonderful space!
Amazing apartment. The bedroom looks uncomfortable, but apparently the space has been used to the maximum opportunities. Super!
