I don't think I have seen a less practically designed space on this channel. The black with light colored wood aesthetics are nice but that central pod position makes every space awkward especially the two fold out table areas and the sterile living room.
i think people are forgetting this is a very very small space. only 250 something sq ft of which the bathroom and balcony take out a chunk. i imagine they went for this design bc the earlier layout kept the individual rooms or spaces very tiny and cluttery. i can understand people's annoyance w the new design but this is ideal for such a small space to allow the sensation of wider flowing space with all the living spaces intact. the architect always knows best i'd say than us on the internet

Why oh why?? They should have kept the old layout. When he opened both tables it literally stressed me out. Blocking access in such a small space makes it so claustrophobic.
It's actually crazy how much sense the old layout made, with minimal effort you would've had a nice open plan living/kitchen/dining area with lots of light, and a cozy bedroom off that. The owner (I won't blame the designer because they were surely just following a brief) made a problem where one didn't exist
As well as unsafe. Imagine if there's a fire and you have to quickly under enormous stress refold that shit to get out. Dangerous and impractical design.
agreed about the original layout. now that you can size up the whole space with one look, it actualy looks smaller. and the pod is so overwhelming that it dwarfs the space further. very oppressive.
One side is just for Eatingt, if your are done cleaining and eating in the kitchen you put the table away, and get to the other side for work. It´s simple, you just use one side at the time.
@@andgo1400 Yes, I'm surprised they went with these types of supports. Considering the fact that the table almost touches the wall on the other side, why not just have a bit of a lip there on the wall to support the table?

Yeah thats the problem with small spaces I guess, specially when you have to be there all the time for quarantine but It also depens on the person. In general a very organized small apartament is very satisfaying. Anyways Keep it up!
I’d have to nix the bench seat in favor of a nice comfy sectional sofa. That would definitely improve the comfort and livability. More soft furnishings are needed, ie rugs, pillows. But I really like this design. Lots of storage, easily accessible , very functional and nice aesthetics . A large balcony in such a beautiful setting would also give another seating or dining space.
loved how the pod became a part of the kitchen, the bathroom, the living space and the bedroom, separating the areas from each other which might have been difficult otherwise in a small space.
Definitely, I also think the dining and working space area are a little cramped. A good bed/couch combo or an elevated section with a pull-out bed underneath seems best to me in small spaces like this.
The couch looked uncomfortable indeed. There are more comfortable couches with enough space inside. I think the owner is indeed an aesthetic minimalist.
This seems to be a feature in many of these micro apartments, unnecessarily so in my view. Plenty of space there for a nice couch. I'd be more impressed with a comfortable design that people could actually live with. I'd give this an hour before the owner heads to a furniture store to buy a proper couch

they are better off with a few plates and cutleries since the space for dining is almost non existent. This suit a single or couple who rarely gets visitors.
That's totally unfunctional. The sofa look pretty uncomfortable, the cabinetry seems to be there only for the position of the windows, that can't be cover with that tansu furniture, the results are two tiny surface for dining and studying. It'isnt well thought out, the only thing that's ok is the bathroom, untouched from the original project.
Nice - I would have had a fold down table on the Murphy bed though, which could fold back up when the bed is lowered. That dining table is pretty darned small! It's an amazing bolt hole in Sydney though..
Same idea. Just wrote my comment a few seconds back before I read yours (copied mine in here so you don't have to look for it): I would use the bottom of the bed as a full-sized fold-out dining table/studying desk for up to 4 people (when the bed is folded). I'd also replace the couch with one with wheels and put a 43"+ TV screen above the couch. During the day, you could watch the TV from the couch, with the couch moved to your desired location, or you could watch it while sitting at the table. At night, you could watch the TV directly from your bed. Either the designer or the client (or both) didn't think about the furniture placement as much as they could. I mean, the tables felt like "Oh, I forgot to put a table, let's slap it in here, where it certainly won't feel claustrophobic." kind of idea. Sorry, but not a fan of this one. :/
I agree the table seems in a weird place. The addition of a table attached to the Murphy bed would be a nicer place to eat and work. I’d have to have a more comfortable couch but that’s cause I’m getting on in years. Also I’m not keen on the shape of the hand basin cabinet looked harsh.
The design and layout it great. I’d certainly change the lounge and have a drop down projector onto the pod. But the two table to the sides are very impractical.
Pretty interesting design . Just felt that having that storage unit In the Centre of the whole open plan compartmentalize the space rather than enlarging it .
I see that many people disliked the idea and execution, but I digress. (I mean except for the sad tables). Freeing up the walls for additional attached furniture makes it spacious enough. Also adding vertical surfaces that the hub provides made the space more complex and thus bigger. This is really good enough since almost all sides have natural lighting already. But to each their own anyway.
Why would you take out the separate bedroom... I would hate to have my sleeping area in the living room right behind the kitchen. No way to have someone stay over now. Also, you can't have both tables (desk and dining table) down at the same time because you can't access the other side (either bathroom/ kitchen or living room). If you work from home you'd like to have your desk always set up. If you sit on the uncomfortable looking sofa you're basically staring at a wall or a tiny monitor weirdly positioned to the side. Definitely not my cup of tea but I guess it's what the client wanted. Still not very well thought out.
I think people need to realize that it was designed specially for this person. They probably do not need/want a comfy couch and they don’t own a TV, but rather use a computer monitor. If they had wanted a large TV, they would have accommodated that in the design. It’s not for everyone, but I think this design is pretty neat.
I find this design quite innovative, even with the storage pod. I think the design choices to not have the pod attached to the ceiling and to add the distorted mirror really help lighten the piece. I could see this being a cozy place to live!
I don t find this design that useful. That unit it s in the middle of the room and you have to go around it for everything. Also you have a small working space and a small table for kitchen. The unit it s blocking some of the window... why?
Looks very cold....i miss plants or warm color that makes it more cosy. I miss that warmer feeling🌻 I love modern and clean designs, but how i said..🔥 ..the kitchen is pretty nice!
Another beautiful pod design from Nicholas! I loved his work on The Warren location & there's some great pieces here too! I continue to love his use of reflective surfaces with the panels under the couch and the warped reflective surface behind the small shelving unit. (Seriously the warped reflective surface made me so happy - I need to find a way to use this.) I'm also a big fan of how the space was separated! The kitchen looks amazing & having it done out in black provides a visual reminder that you are in the kitchen space. I've been seeing more and more people using either pods or larger dressers as space dividers in open spaces and I really love this. I know so many people, including myself, who rent and cannot erect walls to separate space, so using furniture to do so provides a functional option to achieve the space you're looking for. While I'm not doing something the exact same, I actually use my couch as a half wall to visually separate my living room from my work space. Thanks for sharing - can't wait to see more!
I don't know about negative comments here but I absolutely loved it! small space with lot of storage, separation of different space. Only thing I would a projector. Anyway great video👍
I usually love these but this one was disappointing honestly. It had a good thought process and ideas but badly executed. Craftsmanship is beautiful tho.
The physical activity of pushing a bed up tactfully involves the homeowner in actively creating “more space” in their life. Accountable and empowering. Similarly, by pulling it down, one is preparing for sleep space. The subconscious “wind down” effect this has on the brain is wonderful. It might feeel like “more work and effort” (at first) but it becomes effortless once it’s habitual and more importantly, the impact of a clean, less overwhelming space provides agile mental clarity, allowing one to make better lifestyle choices quickly and easily. Like, washing our hands or brushing one’s teeth. ;) To play devils advocate, I DO understand some peoples issue with the effort though, I don’t have a dryer and I hate having to feel busy in a task like hanging clothes. Lol
This is not a livable space. If you’re only sleeping, showering and having breakfast, it’s ok, but I don’t even like it for that because it’s so cold and uninviting - more like a hotel room. Putting that pod in the middle of the room ruins the whole place. I would have put a sleeping nook where the kitchen is and used a wardrobe in front of it to conceal it and create some division with the living and dining area. Then a real sofa, possibly L-shaped, on the other side of the wardrobe, with kitchen in the opposite corner, probably in an L-shape. Then use the wall next to the kitchen for a wall-mounted television and small desk that can expand and double as a dining table. Then put vertical storage all around the room. I would also reconfigure the bathroom so that the shower is on the back wall with glass doors, and sink and toilet are on either side of the shower - preferably katty-korner for more space.
@@scaryjeff after all it is the clients needs and wants that are addressed and architecturally designed for, everyone has to understand that. Clients have different existing conditions, preferences, budget, again needs and wants. It is conceived, built and suited for them and for their lifestyle.
pod was an interesting idea , but neither the dining nor the study is compatible. it's too congested and uncomfortable . seriously no one would sit there and work or eat. And that couch is so uncomfortable , i would rather sit on the floor lay my back on the couch .Some how the kitchen is perfect . Everything in the kitchen space is neatly integrated and there is ample amount of storage and lot of natural light
Great design. I would install wide TV beneath the bed. I would prefer the pod to move atleast on one axis to make living room area bigger when you don't need the kitchen. Excellent Design 👌
I love the way this channel made all their videos. No loud background music or fancy intro ... always seems calm and collected. The persons interviewed always spoke in a cool tone that made the apartments desirable.
The pod is very nice, but overall the free space is smaller after the renew... The pod looks a monolith in the middle of the room. Changing the configuration inside the bathroom would render more free space in it. It was well executed but it could be way better. :)
my favorite videos on this channel are ones that show really brilliant and livable small designs, and designs that get torn to shreds in the comment section. Good to come across one of the second type now lmao
sure, the design is unpractical for a lot of people here but I think what matters most is how the client prefers their own home because after all, that’s what truly matters.
I honestly love this design, and am surprised at how disappointed ppl are. It's open plan, but the central pod provides a sense of separation, and everything in that pod is arranged thoughtfully around its functions on each side. The mirrored art niche and dining/study gaps provide light and ventilation circulation, and the "uncomfortable sofa" is such a flexible lounge area! For guests to sleep, a surface for board game nights, or even a console if the owner decides to place a larger TV on the wall above it. The integrated lighting in the pod also provides multiple functions. I'd definitely live here!
I read the comments and realised that I'm not the only person disappointed. The bed and storage could be placed on the wall opposite to the windows and further storage could be made under the windows. Hence an open space ,simple.
I don't know about other people but I really do like the layout. This just cements my view of architecture and design that its user will and always will define what is valuable for them. For me, this layout added value to the space.
Seems like you closed of the space...the pod is an amazing idea to get storage and save space, sure, but you sort of created a very uneccessary separation to the space...this place seems like it would benefit, if you left it open 🙂 I'm no professional though, that's just what feels like to me 🙂 Also the living area seems incredibly uncomfortable 😂
There are drop down beds along with sofa I feel like that would've been a better option bcoz that "couch looked so uncomfortable and the living room didn't look cozy when the bed was folded. Then they could've added a TV or something to the wall where the"couch" was placed. Even the eating area could've been thought out better but I think it's according to the client so I wasn't too bothered.
I was going to suggest the same piece of furniture, on the wall so the TV and a usable pull-out table for four could take the bed space. A small but comfortable upholstered chair, too, like a vintage bridge chair. Also note that the fridge opened away from the cooking area, a big no-no.
Yes. I've seen wall beds with a built on couch that folds away underneath when the bed is pulled down. That would be so much more comfortable. Which would free up that couch area for another storage wall that houses the TV with a fold down dining table. I'm sure this is what the client wanted but it seems like the space could have been used a little more efficiently! To each their own.
I would use the bottom of the bed as a full-sized fold-out dining table/studying desk for up to 4 people (when the bed is folded). I'd also replace the couch with one with wheels and put a 43"+ TV screen above the couch. @@gregpendrey6711 No, it' not, these are just my ideas on how to make it less "bad" (in my opinion it's bad, yours might be different). If I had an apartment to design, I'd choose a different layout. This feels too cramped.
I love it! Especially the kitchen and bathroom. The only things I would change, are the couch and the tv location. Maybe the couch cushion could be thicker and more comfortable, and I would use a projector instead of that tiny tv, that's off to one side. Plants would be nice too. I Would have liked to see the patio area. This space is so peaceful.
Not the biggest fan of this particular design, but overall super stoked to see (thanks to NTS) that there are clients who dare to choose for an unconventional design, instead of a super cramped, traditional lay out of a house on a small footprint. Keep on producing!
this stuff blows my mind. Ive been looking into flipping an apartment that is >500 sq ft, and im just proud to see these solutions to a large property for people like me that live in cities.
I've been living in a 27 sqm Place for one year now. I spent much time thinking about the furniture and the decoration. While living in here, I made some further changes, and I still am doing. Today the place feels pretty comfortable to me, even though I didn't follow every Single design rule. For e. G. I do like Boho-Style, which includes a number of details which make the space less calm. And I kept furniture from different episodes of my life, which also means that these pieces are made of different types of wood or other material. Still I do own a number of white furniture, which kind of sticks it all together. And it helps keeping the place light. So altogether it feels super comfy, and it feels alive. The apartment in the Video Looks super sterile, and it kinda feels over designed to me. I think sometimes people should keep interior design more easy.
i have to agree with most comments, i usually love his work, but this is the first exception. opening both tables blocks access to the rest of the apartment... and that painting on top of the bench. i dont see me using it for lounging
I love it. Everything is so beautiful and spacious. I live in a 350 square foot studio with 12 foot high ceilings and I love small spaces. Thank you for this video.
Smart pod!! 🤗. Critical helper to achieve a meaningful and functional yet simple lifestyle, nonetheless is very appealing on its own. Very clever makeover!! The original layout was not at all desirable. Luckily, the apartment builder included windows for cross ventilation, and window in the bath...a must. This is now a very desirable tiny home. Really like the distorted mirror on the pod, seen upon entering the living space. It makes the massive but necessary and highly functional pod seem less dominating. The ambience lighting at top of massive pod close to the ceiling is nice to have. Must be awesome and relaxing at nighttime...soft light emanating from top of massive pod close to and bouncing off the limit (the ceiling.) You sort of become a part of this "pod illuminating the environment in the most pleasant way." Pod is this immobile machine, and you give it mobility and life, by building your lifestyle around it, through it. Otherwise, massive pod may appear more "scary", though it is anything but scary, or dominating. Back to earth...😃 And this is only 258 sq ft. If you have a bed for single, pod can be reconfigure to also open up as a long bench second table, which you don't have to fold up all the time. You can sit at this bench table to have a view 2:06 of that gorgeous picturesque outdoor (blue water and green tree in one view... not common) through the balcony. This is luxury that is easy to maintain and sustain, hard to come by, requiring little initial cost, and literally no depreciation. 🤗😂🥰 Can the pod house small electric appliances?... ie. microwave oven, or serve as housing for circuits giving sufficient power?
People in these comments are so critical about the appearance and comfortability of this house, when they don’t even know what the client’s view was and what he/she required for the apartment. It may not look good in your eyes, but it may does look good or works fine for someone else.
The 'pod' has made the space seem drastically smaller and can we talk about claustrophobia?
placing a huge wooden block in the middle of the appartment seems to me like the opposite of an "open living space". also leaving that one inch gap between the wooden module and the ceiling did nothing for me, aside from collecting dust

Exactly! It blocks the entire window 😒
An improvement would be if the block had more space between the top and the ceiling, so that more air and light can flow through.

Made me immediately think of 2001 a space odyssey, and not in a good way.
The design and layout it great. I’d certainly change the lounge and have a drop down projector onto the pod. But the two table to the sides are very impractical.
I love the projector idea for that space!
Pretty interesting design . Just felt that having that storage unit In the Centre of the whole open plan compartmentalize the space rather than enlarging it .
I love how the bench seat appears to be floating... Genius!! Kitchen ❤
I always imagine how much a custom all-in-one furniture like this one would cost.
It’s not for everyone, but I think this design is pretty neat.
i hope there's more ~ 25 sqm apartments to be featured 👌
@@anniinthewoods8287 that's tight space!
I find this design quite innovative, even with the storage pod. I think the design choices to not have the pod attached to the ceiling and to add the distorted mirror really help lighten the piece. I could see this being a cozy place to live!
For 24sqm he has done such a great job. It’s a really small space. The pod is very clever. So much negativity in the comments, I think a tad harsh.
If there's some smell in the kitchen, then it will be spread to the bed. The whole room will become a kitchen.
I am not a Murphy bed fan, therefore I would prefer to utilize the sofa area for bed, and the bed area for a sofa. Clean and visually pleasant though.
I don t find this design that useful. That unit it s in the middle of the room and you have to go around it for everything. Also you have a small working space and a small table for kitchen. The unit it s blocking some of the window... why?
Looks very cold....i miss plants or warm color that makes it more cosy. I miss that warmer feeling🌻
I love modern and clean designs, but how i said..🔥
..the kitchen is pretty nice!
Absolutely fantastic set up all of that in such a small space with everything needed within reach and yet hidden when not in use.
The bathroom design is A+
I usually love these but this one was disappointing honestly. It had a good thought process and ideas but badly executed. Craftsmanship is beautiful tho.
Exactly. It felt like he experimented his ambitious ideas on a gullible client. 😄
The physical activity of pushing a bed up tactfully involves the homeowner in actively creating “more space” in their life. Accountable and empowering. Similarly, by pulling it down, one is preparing for sleep space. The subconscious “wind down” effect this has on the brain is wonderful. It might feeel like “more work and effort” (at first) but it becomes effortless once it’s habitual and more importantly, the impact of a clean, less overwhelming space provides
agile mental clarity, allowing one to make better lifestyle choices quickly and easily. Like, washing our hands or brushing one’s teeth. ;) To play devils advocate, I DO understand some peoples issue with the effort though, I don’t have a dryer and I hate having to feel busy in a task like hanging clothes. Lol
Something about these multifunctional pods is as perfect as nauseous
Looks nice, but i prefer the original floorplan with updated furnishings and kitchen. Seems stark. I prefer cosy.
I would also reconfigure the bathroom so that the shower is on the back wall with glass doors, and sink and toilet are on either side of the shower - preferably katty-korner for more space.
lmao this unit featured wasn't conceived and designed for you
This idea sounds really good. It feels like the client really wanted that japanese block, and everything else had to be designed around that.
3 cheers for the designer as the client is happy...
This is just stunning. I don't know why I keep coming back for these kind of videos, I just feel very serene watching them
I love how people complain how this unit was design yet they're not the client. Hehe.
It doesn't look good for socialising but for a single person or a couple who don't entertain very much, I'm sure it suits.
I love this kind of solution for a tiny space 👏👏👏
That block is a eyesore for me
my favorite videos on this channel are ones that show really brilliant and livable small designs, and designs that get torn to shreds in the comment section.
Finally an actual small apartment!
@@gregpendrey6711 No, it' not, these are just my ideas on how to make it less "bad" (in my opinion it's bad, yours might be different). If I had an apartment to design, I'd choose a different layout. This feels too cramped.
Gorgeous, especially the reflecting sitting area and tasteful artwork.
First thought: 24sqm is not enough. But wow! You did an amazing job. Absolutely love it. Congratulations!
It’s been too long between episodes, NTS. I’ve missed you!
Separate sleeping from living, my nr. 1 rule I learned in the pandemic
This channel is truly keeping my soul alive in these hard times
V cool idea 💡
I can watch these videos all day. They’re so calming. Beautiful. Thank you
27 sq amazing results. Bathroom superb. Inspiring! Clever architecture shines through.
I see connection in almost every flat they often have bright wood elements and i cant imagine them in my place ig reminds me to much on my school desk
Some of the best designs I've ever seen are from your videos. They surprise me in a new way every time. Thank you.
Things are arrange beautifully and due to color combination place looks big.
Wow! So much hate for this little apartment. I thought the design was brilliant. Not my style, but still smart and elegant.
The client obviously loves the space designed for him & that is what was achieved.
I'd like to see more of these really small ones around 250sqft and that don't have lofts or massive vertical space
i have to agree with most comments, i usually love his work, but this is the first exception. opening both tables blocks access to the rest of the apartment... and that painting on top of the bench. i dont see me using it for lounging
I like the geometric matte tiles in the bathroom
I love it. Everything is so beautiful and spacious. I live in a 350 square foot studio with 12 foot high ceilings and I love small spaces. Thank you for this video.
I like the intentional use of mirrors and reflective surfaces in this space
I am in love with this gorgeous apartment and the serene surrounding area.
I love Nicholas Gurney designs ! I myself would change a few things for personal preferences but the overall idea it's incredible !
This is just genius...maximum exploitation of space and still the feeling of a loft, not too small :)
Smart pod!!
Back to earth...😃
And this is only 258 sq ft.
Can the pod house small electric appliances?... ie. microwave oven, or serve as housing for circuits giving sufficient power?
Very clever functionality
Clever & livable - love it!
People in these comments are so critical about the appearance and comfortability of this house, when they don’t even know what the client’s view was and what he/she required for the apartment. It may not look good in your eyes, but it may does look good or works fine for someone else.
This is supposed to be a living space for asingle person so this is really perfect for single person.
I kinda like the pod, a very useful addition to a small space. It certainly packs a lot of storage into a fairly compact unit.
It's like living in an art gallery.
