Destiny Taken King: How Do You Make Prison of Elders More Fun?

  • Prison of Elders is coming to year 2 in the April Update. While score attack and leaderboards help, Prison of Elders itself is still a pretty barebones experience compared to other horde modes from other games. So, why wasn't PoE liked, what other games have horde modes, why did those work and what can we pull from those games that we could add into Prison of Elders to make it a better activity?

They should try something like zombie survival mode in CoD. For example you are dropped in a large maze like area which unlocks new areas the longer you survive. When they drop random hords of enemies who you have to kill to advance to the next stage and every 10 stages a random boss will spawn with a chance of dropping a 280 exotic, every 100 stages an ultra hard boss will spawn with a 100% chance of an exotic. Also every time you die your rewies time is doubles ex. you start at 10 seconds next time you die it's 20 next it's 40 then its 80 and so on.

I couldn't agree more Datto. You made really valid especially when you mentioned Gears of War as I used to only play Gears before Destiny was released and not to mention that horde was always my game mode but like you said it always depends on the person if one likes it or not. Anyways, great video and great topic to expand on. Keep the the good work man! =)

Great content man, it's nice to see how you have grown by the way. GG

The problem with Prison of Elders is it throws way to much at you all at once. Dismantle mines while being shot at in all directions by majors, who are huge bullet sponges, never have to reload, have unreal accuracy, no recoil at all, no spread at all(shrapnel launchers and cabal weapons aside, they do have spread.), and occasionally a really hindering modifier.
Warframe has shades of this, but some enemies do eventually have to stop shooting, but Warframe mitigates this by allowing you some Iframes, evasive movement, and multiple other ways to protect yourself.
Halo Reach(i didn't play much ODST firefight) you were a great deal more durable than guardians are, plus since you and the enemy could use the same weapons it was a level playing field.
Gears of War had it's wonderful cover usage, this may seem simple, but it made a world of difference than oh i dunno standing behind a wall waiting for a vandal's shock rifle to shoot around a corner and hit you anyway, and again for the most part you and the enemy had the same weapons, it was a level playing field.
Anyway that is my two penya on the subject. I apologize for my grammar, spelling, and structuring i am not very good at this.

Your opinions are always well thought out. The horde mode not being mandatory but optional was a good point. Well done.

  • @vibrationrising

The horde mode I played the most was Zombies, particularly on Kino Der Toten. The thing that made Black Ops zombies so good, for me, was the correct amount of complexity but also the way the random rewards would influence your experience and how far you got.
For instance, if you got the Ray Gun, not only was it super fun, but you were likely to survive much longer.
So trying to relay this to Destiny POE, I had some ideas.
Make random modifiers pick ups that spawn in on the map on different waves.
For instance at the beginning of a wave, 3 random modifiers are placed on the map in random locations, but only available for 30sec. ie. Solar burn, Primary damage, Precision Damage etc. While 'negative' modifiers are placed on the fireteam overall, perhaps for the room or wave. ie. Juggler, Enemy Solar Burn, Grounded etc.
This in a horde style would be ideal, as how far you go, may depend entirely on what modifiers you get and who gets them. The idea being the modifiers on the map are far enough away and only available for so long, that whoever is closest will have to be the one who gets it. Then if the person that has Primary damage is using the Ace of Spades, yay. If the void burn is picked up by Truth, yay. etc.
This would add 2 -3 layers of complexity and make me want to come back for more!!!!

Go to Dreadnaught patrol and wait til you see the words "the enemy is moving against each other" at the bottom of your screen.
That's the closest thing to a horde mode in Destiny imo. Make two different races of monsters fight each other and give you a mission to complete while all that is goin on or something like that.

+Acaru136 I personally think it's hilarious that heroic strikes are harder than nightfalls. Mostly. Unless the negative nightfall modifiers really stack on top of an encounter (think void burn on Aluk-Hul shrieker room or the burns on the warsat part of S.A.B.E.R.), and even then it's only ONE part of the strike. But heroics just have too many majors, and the majors take so much damage it's not even funny.

Mass effect 3 had a great horde mode because it was simple but ramped up as you went. It started with low tier enemies and got more hectic as you went. That and the spawn locations changing along with the side missions made it more interesting.

  • @TheUnseen111
    @TheUnseen111 8 років тому

I always liked the idea of an alternative to Strikes and Nightfalls where you hold off waves of enemies until you all die. The longer you survive, the better *guaranteed* loot you would get. For example, if you survive three waves you gain a 290+ piece of armor. Survive five to get 300+ gear. Survive ten (Which would be exceedingly difficult), and you'd get 310-320 gear. Obviously the light would then increase with updates, and perhaps exclusive gear specifically from said survival mode.

My 1st recommendation would be to redesign the arena rooms so that there are better chokepoints to hold down. 2nd Improving the gifts from Variks would also be a huge improvement, sure w/ a certain elemental burn getting heavy is very helpful, but giving us auras or tools like ascendant blades/sheilds or even new deploy-able defenses would drastically add depth to strategizing against difficult foes. 3rd randomness, I have no problem with the modifiers as they function, and having certain higher teir enemies being predictable is very important for strategy too- but changing or adding spawn locations would be nice, not to mention maybe having enemies of different races sorta invade the other arenas would be interesting.

Nail on the head. The updated prison is definitely better already from what I heard, but I do agree ramping up the mayhem would make for a better experience, like more scorch cannons dropping & possibly even different heavy weapons with limited ammo for each race, & the heavy ammo between waves actually being on a spawn timer like in crucible, etc etc. maybe even selectable modifiers, like there's a certain mode you can select which brings up a menu where you pick modifiers & can change the duration of the fights & just tune it to your desire Halo style. With that, they could also make cosmetic rewards for doing ridiculously hard challenges (all modifiers on ala Halo skull challenges) through the custom prison runs that could definitely satisfy the more hardcore.

  • @BAMozzy69

One of my favourite 'Horde' modes is CoD:Zombies. Its maps are generally bigger and you have control over the way it flows by opening certain doors and locking others. Its not restricted by a set number of waves, having to complete 'Easter Eggs' or build certain things by a certain time and it has more variety in the weapons without the penalising that Destiny does - swap you heavy lose your ammo. It gradually increases the difficulty too.
I would like Destiny's Horde mode to have been similar with maybe a bit of the Gears type thrown in. Something like defending the wall from the variety of enemies that destiny has. Start off in one point Say the Divide, and defend a few waves of Fallen with the last wave having a Walker and yellow bar Knights before having to battle your way through the Breach, get to the Cosmodrome gateway and defend against waves of various enemy types - including Vex and Cabal (similar to prevent Vex Sacrifices and defend the Warsat) with increasingly difficult and more numerous enemies. Maybe even have a few of the Strike type bosses. You could have a Horde mode based around each main area too and force players to get to certain areas to defend from waves.

Had an idea this morning, let me know what you think.
I feel like the current light system could work perfectly with a horde mode. I'll use the current levels as an example. Imagine a 20 round horde mode representing the end game level range (300-320). The level of gear you get depends on how far you get. The items that drop are random but the light level is guaranteed. Completing round 5=305 gear, round 8=308, 15=315 etc.
So how would the drops work? You start horde mode to find a chest that can only be opened with a key (like y1 PoE). How do you get these keys? By completing optional objectives along with the main goal which is to survive. (dismantle mines, yesssss?). These objectives in y1 were merely punishing tasks that you did to not fail. What if instead these were an opportunity for reward? You wouldn't be punished for not doing it, you just wouldn't get a key. These rewards can be claimed anytime between rounds at the light level corresponding to the last round completed. If your team wipes it's game over, and not claiming any rewards in the hope of holding out longer will result in no reward for that attempt (risk/reward). The type of gear can be separated accordingly as well similar to the normal/harrowed gear in KF (300-310=normal, 310-320=harrowed).
So what happens at round 20? Skolas, your boss, the exotics, the endgame. With this system it'll be a lot easier for people to reach the level cap by working towards it. The gear you get will only aid you in your later attempts. Level capping shouldn't be based on luck, but it also shouldn't be the sort of one and done gear that came out of the previous raids where you only needed one of each piece.
As far as the setting goes I like a large arena. Like you said smaller means more predictable and I understand Bungie was probably looking to mix up the location with the multiple rooms. But imagine multiple arenas that rotated each week with a different setting, a different boss, and different endgame exotics!
    That's pretty much it.

Datto, I love your videos and I love PoE. I have always seen it as a small scaled raid and I'm happy they are bringing it back but I agree with everything you say about what needs to be done. I'm afraid this new PoE is going to die off too fast and people are going to become perfectionists about it just for the gear and make it harder for others to catch up to that level which will lead to the activity becoming another non chill grinding experience just to reach a higher light level. PS I loved that you mentioned warframe. is it possible we can get some warframe videos in the future? I feel that game doesn't get as enough love and credit as it should.

Mann vs Machine in Team Fortress 2? It's kinda of horde mode, where you need to defense your base from waves of robots, that carrying bomb. It was fun, because you need to collect and spend money on upgrades (damage resistances, movement speed, jump height, weapons upgrades, etc.). It makes you feel stronger, while game throwing at you more and more enemies (some can spam grenades/rockets, have 100% crits, etc., but it doesn't kill you instantly, if you buy resistances)

What I liked about mass effect's horde mode was that I could attempt it at any level and just go until it got too hard. Beating all modes gave special access to the apartment and better equipment which could be bought rather than continued grinding of the horde. I felt accomplished beating all modes and I didn't have to constantly prove I could still do it if I just wanted to stick that feather in my cap and move on.

My favourite horde mode to date is Call of Duty's zombies. The main things I love about it are 1)The wonder weapons (such as Ray Gun, Wunderwaffe, The Bows etc) 2) It has a story of its own that has been developing since WaW (2009).
and finally 3)Pack a Punch. as the rounds get tougher you can upgrade your weapons to deal more damage.
Perks are also a factor but Destiny's version of that could be the modifiers they have.

Borderlands 2's expansion Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep added specific buffs for those zones that you could buy with the game's Eridium that you find. These buffs boost things like player speed, defense, ammo regen, and damage. Maybe Destiny's new PoE could have something where you pay some of your score for that match and you can get a buff to speed or defense or damage? This way players who want to get through the content to the end can spend their points that they earn in the match and then so better, or people could challenge themselves and go for score while sacrificing the buffs?

Mass effect's mode is, IMO, the best I've played. A great thing from that that would work in Destiny would be the credit system. Complete rounds with an objective, earn in game money to spend on loot crates that would give new guns, bonuses, inventory items etc. Play a certain number of rounds, enough to buy a package from Variks, new gear or weapons would drop along with SCs, materials etc

It would be cool if they had an unlimited round system like CoD Zombies and the map was all of the cells connected to each other so that you get a mix of all the enemies in a single round. Of course the issue that would come up there is that certain enemies will end up fighting each other but Bungie can try to limit the boundaries of the AI so that you don't have Hive spilling over into the Fallen cell and having the two fight each other for you.

+Datto trust me, Mass Effect Multiplayer wasn't random. Spawns where set for every single comnination of enemy - difficulty, and this covers Platinum's different factions too... Each wave had set spawns initially, and only specific enemies could spawn, and in specific quantities, with a Budget that counted how many and how many troops where spawn able by the game... This allowed good players to effectively bleed out the spawn and choose what kind of enemy not make spawn anymore... I'd go more in depth, after 800+ hours I'd love to, but this isn't the place... While fun, it wasn't random. Or better, it was, but to a certain extent :)

Lager maps! Waves, vehicle spawns, Weapon progression inside of the own game, (maybe like cod) or maybe intermediate boss levels. Like i said maybe stat with a sidearms default and find drops as you kill higher tier stuff. Maybe start with no inventory and contune better until "last wave".

Big map Say large as and area or two in patrol spawn in with nothing except a side arm waves come and stuff drops sometimes that is a better weapon waves gets harder weapons get slightly better and once you and your fire team dies you get set to orbit with a score on how well you have done. all your regular stuff is back. This way makes it so that all levels people can play and do well.

There really should just be one giant prison room, and the enemies that start out should be level 28 enemies, and that slowly increases to level 41 enemies, and then maybe to level 45 enemies, light level 350 or something. Have the enemies always climb up in level infinitely, so that Poe is always relevant, no matter what the cap is

I think that the PoE arenas should be bigger. As in we should fight each faction within their ships rather than "cells". Something similar to the Shadow Theif strike where you fight through the ship all the way to the boss, but not like raid sized big maps. Something similar to the covenant ship from Halo:CE

For me, randomization is everything. I have a good memory so I can actually list the enemies that will spawn in various waves and it makes it so boring and repetitive to fight them. Tbh I'd love it if missions and strikes had randomised spawns as well.

They should have just done what they did with Firefight. You play in one huge arena and fight enemies, with each Round adding a new modifier, but a minor one. Like Chaft for no radar. Then at the end of the 3rd round, wipe the modifies and add a more heavier/punishing one, like Match Game. Keep doing this till you... well... fail. The farther you get, the higher the drop rate is on Legends and Exotics.

I get your point datto, adding cosmetics and some materials in a endless mode of PoE wouldnt be a bad idea, they also need to bring skolas or a new final boss with mechanics and some improvements on what means horde mode itself.
I like the idea of adding something similar to a critical objective BUT not death as a punishment for not completing them, i would also like to see those turrets used sometimes on the game (very, very, very few times)
it would be fun to have them as a reward for completing an OPTIONAL objective, it would be fun to shoot hordes and hordes of enemies with that.
About the points system, they should make a in-game leaderboards around the world or country or even friends could be a good idea.
But thats just my opinion, anyways at how dry destiny is for the majority of people, we need new content and fast

Which would be apeing the Mass Effect 3 formula - and I don't think it would be a bad fit!

Where you all have to hold down one location from a certain amount of enemies each round.
The farther you make it through the rounds the more loot you get.

my one thing about PoE was that it didnt feel as awarding in year 1. remains to be seen in y2. but it wasnt fun. i missed fire fight. i kissed the ground beneath which it was made because fire fight had so many variables that were controlled and made the mode fun. PoE just through crazy challenging enemies at you in a frenzied and annoyed manner.
i would rather them have had a zombies mode on each destination. for Earth you stay in an area like skywatch or moth yard ms or something or even put you in the european deadzone and start the enemies at level 1. then wave after wave give proportional experience and enemy strength levels. make it 6. it would have ben fun to have my full fireteam dominate or get dominated after so many levels.
same with moon but the hive. the vex on venus and the cabal on mars. in y2 make the dreadnaught have one that is taken. bring in ultras every 10 to 15 rounds. amd just have wave after wave until i die. i didnt want the slow paced objective game play. i wanted my objective to be survive. however my objective became do this and that while surviving. and that just sucked in my opinion.
PoE was a great concept and if this was archery they wouldve just missed their on the bullseye in my mind but thats just me.

I found that in the original PoE, the add rounds were boring, and stretched especially with so a load of yellow health bar enemies. But what we saw on the stream, with 3 rounds of bosses seems to solve the boringness of PoE for me at least, and the fact that the bosses have more mechanics makes it even better for me. Hopefully they dial down the amount of yellow health bars accordingly

Reasons: No matchmaking or splitscreen. It's impossible to solo Skolas. Also it's impossible to find a party in the game. I would love to have a "Wall Defense" mode where fallen just assault the walls of the City and allows one to engage in massive 15 player matchmaking.

  • @RagnarokMasta

I like warframe, but Datto, you sometimes forget the target audience here, Destiny has always tried to go for the middle ground, and warframe is anything but casual. It's great if it's fun for you, but it takes a crapton of time to get anywhere in warframe(plus you did get a nifty gift let's not forget). PoE is much more accessible and less grindy I find. This score attack mode and leaderboards would put it at just the right level for most audiences to have fun, warframe...not really.
Also, given that people have already mapped out ways to farm up to 230 levels of various modes in warframe, a certain level of predictability (and certain suits being oveepowered) make it more patience than skill to get through.

    • @jeremymichaelnt
      @jeremymichaelnt 8 років тому

+RagnarokMasta But why should a game test our patience and not skill? I don't want to boot up a game mode being like, "okay, if I just get through this I can maybe get some loot I need." Even Halo Firefight was SOOO much better than POE and it majorly catered to the casual players. I should know, I was one myself when it came out.
