As simple as it gets, 1 Amplifier / 10 Different Guitars in Standard E tuning. Which one is your favorite?
I Like Cort guitars! Cheap and nice! 🤘
A clear difference is at dean
Telecaster is my winner. They need can rename it Fender Metalcaster.
Sterling, Strat and Solar. But all are identical.
What was your favorite? Sound and to-play? :)
Just one!! Dean cross or the red solar with gold hardware nice 🐱
The telly coming in blazing with that twang...such character.
Yes, really liked the clear string separation and twangy but still heavy. Telecasters do it all!😎🤘
Really shows why they’re used in double tracking heavy rhythms with humbucker equipped guitars. Pretty cool content, Ola.
I think Im the only one who digs that Gretsch.
Too much twang thru the distortion for me tho lol buy clean parts in the studio with those are very very nice.
@@springbloom5940 the Gretsch surprised me too. Very clear and still heavy
everyones commenting on the guitars and tones, but can we talk about the riffs? 🔥🔥🔥 fucking killer.
Know the feeling, currently sat here with the speed at 50% trying to work it out
Metallica could use that
Any Song Title ?
@@ismailg6132 i think theyre all originals of olas
@@ismailg6132 Havok - Time is Up has the riff that alternates between the E and the F cords
The Dean and washburn are surprisingly different sounding. Washburn sounds the best for that riff!
I thought the same. They both have the same pick-ups but the Dean had a twangy chirp to it compared to the scooped sound of the Washburn.
They both suck ass. That is hands down, the worst pickup Duncan makes. Sorry(not sorry) to all the D-Bag cultists, but his tone was awful.
There are some really unique sounds here. The Jackson and Dean have interesting bite. The Gretsch is very chewy, I dig it. The Tele is super rad with how it maintains the single-coil twang but without the screech factor. Most balanced to me overall though, was the Ibanez.
I agree that those Steve Specials would definitely sound good in your Epiphone. I'm not sure they are even made anymore. We'll have to look around and see.
Same for me !
Gretsch sound has big mastodon vibes
The Ibanez and the Strat had that "common" sound, but nothing wrong with it - it kinda feels like home. But you won't get those super unique tones like with a Tele or Gretsch!
For me the Washburn Dime ST Pro Seymour Duncan Dimebucker is the best sounding, but not by much. With the exception of the Fender Telecaster all the the others are super similar.
Agreed, except for the single coil axe they're all essentially the same.
And it makes me chuckle, thinking of all the dorks and nerds who piss away endless hours online arguing about "this body wood" and "that brand of pickups."
Folks, I guaran-fucking-TEE you, nobody at the basement or bar you're playing in this weekend gives a fat flying leap about what brand of pickups, guitar or amp you have. Relax. Just shut up and play your guitar.
bad to the fuckin bone....🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😎
I really like the Gretsch streamliner. Great sound for a little price.
I really like your name
I believe Caleb from Beartooth records a lot with the Gretsch.
Wish Ola would demo something with P90s (Streamliner or otherwise), don't recall seeing him playing any.
@@alanerpington5698 I believe this streamliner has some sort of filtertron pickups in it. But I agree, Ola needs a p90 guitar and bust out some Sabbath riffs.
@@alanerpington5698
I think he'd have trouble with it. P90s are too thicc for his style.
Those Jeff Loomis had a surprising mid kick, wasn’t expecting that much from them. Like literally if you compare to the scoopier dime bucker and the guitar just before it, it suddenly sounds like there’s a kick around the 700-900hz range. Like it!
I believe he may have altered the settings for different guitars
yeah the seymour duncan blackouts have a mid range punch to them. my original blackouts definitely bring the mids
Talented musician makes E standard heavy as hell! Wow. Something about those Dime guitars made them sound extra special! Awesome vid Ola
By ear, I could distinguish only three guitars that really differed in sound: Jackson-Loomis, Dean - Darell and the Telecaster with its glass. The other seven guitars sounded about the same or have such a slight difference that you don't even notice it in the overall mix.
yes, those stood out the most
The Gretch always is a standout to me
the Gretsch was also very noticeable to me, the hollow body and irregular pickups contribute a lot to that
I think the Ibanez sounded the coolest tbh
YEESS!!! Love these type's of vids!!! Awesome how the sound fades out of the mix an you can hear the individual tone!!! Killer Mr. Ola!!
I love the Jackson tone. My fav of all.
Thanks for this so useful video, Ola. It will serve a lot of people.
That Loomis Jackson sounded amazing. Had a rad mid-range bite to it. The Gretsch sounded surprisingly amazing too. The Tele sounded gnarly too.
Holy cow, that Gretsch sounded incredible! Thick and punchy. Totally unexpected!
Malcom knew what's good.
Sick editing! Seamless between guitars but also killer how you faded the backing track slowly for each.
Thanks Ola. Helps me understand that I really like the Dimebag pickups. 🤘🏽
Gotta say that Dimarzio Steve’s Special sounds pretty clear!
Yeah bright and clear but still heavy and chunky
Toit!
I think the Duncan 59 is such an underrated pickup, the Fender HSS Strat was my favorite of the lot. Pokes right thru a mix with power and punch. 🤟
Can't agree more
Same seems to be the most iconic sounds to me.
Even the palm mutes makes me reminds of Ola demo with boss katana
Which guitar was the Fender HSS one?
@@yogxoth1959 Strat - hum, single, single
@@yogxoth1959 the second one in the video
Thank you Ola...very helpful service ...that F'n RIFF is killer and forever stuck in my head 🤘❤️
Those Dime Washburn pickups were surprisingly beefy and detailed. So far my fav 🤘🏻Thanks Ola for taking the time and energy to put this together for all of us. 🙌🏻
I'm a sucker for that Steve's Special/ Air Norton combo. I've got it in my Ibanez RG350
Yeah, that gretsch stood out for sure! Was booming, and the tele went the exact opposite with the snappy almost thin tone. Great side by side comparison
This was sweet. Loved it. Do it again. Amazing how similar some of them sounded.
That. Was. AMAZING! What a great video dude 🤘🏽🔥 that tele twang tho!
Man, that Gretsch sounded amazing.
My favorite was the Gretsch :D Didn't expect coming such an evil metal sound out of that!
That Awesome Solar sounded the best!! 🤘🤘Awesome way to promote your success in producing a top quality guitar mate! That riff is sick! Nice job man, you made them all sound great! 🤘🤘
Love it !! Got two say my two favorites after listening to it twice had to be was Washburn dime and your solar at the end !!
The DiMarzio Steve's Special is such an underrated pickup.
The Jackson not only sounded amazing it's got such a nice subtle finish. That's the one I would pick!! Obviously solar is my second favourite..... then the fender custom
Yeah, I was feeling the Jackson for sure!
JF blackouts have some bite
Sick riffs! This is a great video. With repeat listening it can definitely help people learn to distinguish between the different pickups and develop their ears a bit. Hard to pick a favourite but the Loomis and the old school JP with the Steve's Special are up there! Great amp choice too, I might have to buy one of those.
Really like this video format would love to see more of it
The Washburn Dime is such a masterpiece, win by beauty
Sounds awful
@@springbloom5940 yeah it sounded kinda dead. Guess it needs to push 120W solid state amps.
@@bearres
Those Dimebuckers are just bad. They sound like an old lunchbox.
@@springbloom5940 that’s unfortunate. They’re supposed to be a replica of the Bill Lawrence XL500’s, right?
I think the Dean 3:40 and Telecaster 4:11 have the most interesting tones! A lot more spanky than the ones before it for sure, I like it.
I have the same Ultra Noiseless pickup as the Tele installed in a Ibanez Talman and I must say they are absolutely fantastic
The Tele sounds absolutely awesome. The sound Is treble rich and quite scooped while having enough bass and mids. Oh and the Southern Cross tears your face off, in a good way tho :D
Agreed on those two but that jL7 hit different too
Agreed, they certainly were the most noticeable in tone shift. That dean had a bit more low end and that tele was a tele haha
Really appreciate the work gone into this riffage to make E standard sound so heavy
Hey Ola! I love the video and did a little test here at home as well using your video!
I tried three different earphones and the results were always different in which guitar I liked the most.
This was really helpful because sometimes I hate my tones and when I switch my headphone it sounds killer!
Lots of different parameters and variables in order to sound good everywhere, which, btw you always do!
Keep up the great work and bring more videos of you drumming!
The Tele is so damn sick. Also THAT GRETSCH!! phew. That thing was kinda angry. it has a smooth clear crunch punch that I like a lot.
As for the regular ones, that music man was really sick. I have really fallen for the dimarzio illuminators. They sound sweet.
I was thinking the Gretsch and the Tele blended together would be amazing
Filtertron type pickups are my favs. Have a Gretsch Filtertron in an old Charvel and everyone is like WTF is that???
Goes tp show how similar different guitars can sound when played through the same rig by thr same player. Only the Tele sounded noticeably different...the rest were interchangeable. There's a lesson to be learned here.
the lession is that the guitar that looks best to me, sounds the best : P lol
I would agree about the guitars sounding similar and the Tele having it's own character but in this particular context it has the worst sound IMHO.
I'm sure the Jim Root and John 5 models or my favourite the custom with 2 wide range humbuckers would sound better through that rig .
And the Tele was the only single coil.
tbh while listening to the audio I thought, wow it really makes a difference in tone. I think the character of each guitar was quite different, tho ofc with all the same gear and setting the sound was similar.
Thank you Phil for typing my exact thoughts for me lol. Couldn't agree more!!!
Love videos like this. Reminds me of your old amp demo videos 🤘😎
Badass guitars & badass riffs makes the world go round 😎👌🏻
Nice video concept. Now I can really hear each guitar’s character more clearly. The Jackson Jeff Loomis was the winner for me. And I didn’t know that Dimebag played shorter scale guitars. Very suprising fun video! 👍
I have to say the Dimebucker is my fav of the lot, along with the Duncan 59 on the Fender. The Fishman pickups sound kinda clanky.
Strictly soundwise, I'd go for the Stratocaster without hesitation. Love the snappy attack and the way she gets out of the mix!
other toughts:
-The Jared dines is a bit lifeless to me, and the Gretsch... not bad but I don't care for this kind of sound
-The Washburn Dime is beefy as hell, wow! It is quite surprising how the Dean is different sounding, way brighter
-The Ibanez Petrucci, MM Petrucci and the Solar are in a nutshell soundwise, with the Ibanez sounding more open and the Solar fuller... All are well balanced and are no-brainer to me
-The Loomis is a great guitar but to my taste I'd put other pickups on it
-The Telecaster is great! and I think it would be interesting as an added-flavor track on a heavy rythm guitar mix
More vids like this please! This was awsome!
Sick riffage as always Ola 🤘💪
the dimbuckers really bite!
PIckups are an interesting thing, as they seem to influence the tone in either subtle or completely obvious ways. Speakers make a massive difference in tone all the time. Amps have subtle character differences (when comparing like for like - obv clean and driven sound different.) But pickups seem to do both.
Yup. It's the speaker/cab material+thickness that tends to make all the difference.
This has to become a series, man.
The Solar was the chuggiest for me
Really cool idea and as you both have a lot of amps aswell as a lot of guitars, I'd be happy to see more of those!
My favorites were the Southern Cross and JPM I'd say... but I have to admit, that both the strat and the tele both had a really cool flavor which made them stand out aswell.
That jam is killer man! Awesome
To my ears the best two were the two Music Man guitars. The Strat and the Solar also sounded good. The Tele was the most distinctive
There’s definitely something that stands out with the southern cross one. It’s got a certain presence. Very metal sounding with that low-mid heavy chug. I can even hear it on my phone speakers.
Probably because of the Dimebucker, it does have more treble than average
@@riku_liikkanen_revisal i think it’s the rebel tears
That fender custom shop is my favorite guitar I think of all the guitars you use on the channel. Killer collection
Astonishing riff! Great video. Goes to show what to pick in the expensive amp vs guitar discussion.
Thanks for posting the scale lengths and pickups. The one with the SD59 does sound like Chris Impellitteri's riff tone, and he uses them supposedly on all his guitars.
3:40 Dean Southern Cross Seymour Duncan Dimebucker has an interesting bite for me. The Tele can be put in a diff category IMO. Also I'm surprised with how the Gretsch sounded in that style. Awesome vid, Ola!
off subject , but didnt dime use bill lawrence ?
@@rtaylor1105 At some point yes the Bill Lawrence XL500 I have one of those in a Washburn strat and from info on the web supposedly the SD Dimebuckers are clones of the XL500.
@@rtaylor1105 yes in his first 2 guitars, I believe. Then it becomes about endorsements and money. So Seymour Duncan reverse engineers the Lawrence to the Dimebucker. But it is different as was Dime's Lawrence, which wasn't bone stock. Dimebuckers have ceramic magnets instead of alnico.
The move to Wahburn allowed SD to have less risk making the Dimebucker. So only the Washburns had Dimebuckers. The Deans had Lawrence pickups, although customized.
what I find SUPER weird, is that the other guitar with the dimebuckers sounded completely different
Strat, Solar, JP15 in that order. They just seem to stand out more than the others. This was great though, nice quick clips to be able to hear the differences. Nice work 🤘
I agree, but would personally also add the ibanez. Not my fav brand, but was quite surprised by the tight low end and overal tone.
I agree
Really enjoyed the riffs on every guitar. 👍👍🔥🔥
pretty happy that a lot of people seem too like the dean sound with seymour dimebag signature pickup , i got a 2008 ml dime Slime with it , not many people seem to truste when i said these old dean sound really good and are very pleasant to play and jam !
This really shows how much the amp and speakers matter more than the guitar. Mics do too. The Jackson and the Dean stood out from the crowd as a different sound, and the Tele took it a step further. Everything else was so close that if you knew how to dial it in, they would be indistinguishable.
I don't think the amps matter more than the guitars. In another test Ola did where he kept the same guitar and cab, and just changed the amp, most of them sounded pretty much the same. I think the most important element is the speaker.
I've listened to it all through my cheap speakers, and the biggest difference for me is the Tele with its signature twang. That would probably be the only guitar I could pick with my eyes closed from this lineup.
Damn dude, what a collection... They all sounded stellar but the sound I have in my head when I think of metal is definitely that Washburn. What a beast 💪
I really like these kind of videos!
No talking, just chugging on different guitars and enjoying that heavy metal chug.
Ok, after skipping back and listening to the same parts i was able to tell the difference. At first my favorite was the JL7 "Blackouts" and the 2 Dime's "Dimebucker", the Dean sounded almost flipped to the Washburn but the same somehow? But then i heard the last one, the Solar with "Fishman FM's" and man it was like the other 2 had a baby and all my favorite bits were present. Well Done Mate!! 10/10
The Dimebucker is one of the worst pickups made.
they sound pretty good to me, but that could be because i like that sound?
how are they the worst? or dont you like the sound? :)
@@adamglegg7202 just get a cheap eq pedal and crank those high mids and you get dimbucker sounds instead of always having that insane high mid spike directly from pickups in case you want to play something different other than thrash metal...
@@gustanoid I agree. Better off having a full range pickup and letting your amp, eq and overdrive pedals tweak your sound. This is why I don't like pickups that eq the sound like a Nazgul as an example.
@@gustanoid nice tip, thanks bro
The Washburn won for me. I've always loved Dimebag's tone. However, the Dean sounded very thin by comparison.
Yeah the Dean had a twangy sound to it.
I loved the Fender US Custom shop 🤘🏼followed by the Jackson JL7 🖤
That Jackson JL7 looks wicked with the BOP and the white binding. Sounding great Ola 👍
That gretch actually rocked so heavy sounding the Tele had a noticeable difference too rest of the guitars all sounded so similar I couldn't tell a difference.
The drunks at the bar or basement you're playing this weekend can't tell the difference, either.
People spend WAY too much time obsessing over tiny little differences in gear. In the vast majority of cases they'd be a lot better off spending that time practicing. And their money would do them more good if they spent it on lessons instead of constantly buying new pedals and pickups.
@@dogslobbergardens6606
Dude, I swapped the massively overpowered ceramics out of a Jackson JS, for Fleor Alnicos and they sound damned near as good as my Duncan Demon.
@@springbloom5940 cool, you picked almost the most extreme example possible. Yes of course you're going to notice a difference between super-high-gain ceramics and moderate-high-gain alnicos, duh.
The point is, in the actual same categories and general range of specs, most pickups are really pretty damn similar.
And your audience does not care. It either sounds good or it doesn't, that's all they hear. They are just not impressed with the geeky stuff guitar nerds lose sleep over.
Man Jared’s guitar sounds good. It’s a toss up between that and the Solar with Fiahmans for me. I was really surprised that compared to the rest I didn’t like the JL7, too much weirdness in the high mids I think. But I think the takeaway is that single coils just sound weird for metal haha.
Same! Though the tele was stood out the most to me
Great concept, Ola the clapper killing it as usual
The solar AB1, the fender strat, and tele, sounded super rad! The Gretsch was also catching my attention too! 🤘🏽
I feel like your Strat has the most balanced tone overall. If I had to track rhythm and lead, I would use the Strat for rhythm and the (more mid focused) Jackson for the solos.
I concur. It sounds so musical!
The tele was the only difference I heard and it was actually really cool
Thank you so much for saying so. I just expected everybody commenting about the *huge* differences... even the strat at the beginning sounded almost like all the others.
The tele was different though.
@@Zinfandel92 lol yep, at the end of the day comes down 99% to pickups and player
Tele is the only noiseless 'single coil' here
Great demo! I like the JL7, the Dime ST, the Dean and the Tele. Looks like I'm more into the high frequencies than the lows.
Great comparison of different pickups through the same setting.
Aah, the Mighty E-Tuning!
Call me oldschool or something but i REALLY like when you play riffs like this in E. Im more like the E - Eb type of guy.
I can say the same, having lots of guitars with different tunings, for some reason I'm always back to the ones tuned in E standard!
An E standard chug sounds so much better than any other tuning IMHO.
Agreed! E tuning might not sound great at low volume through a bedroom practice amp, but through a cranked high gain tube amp it's almost a requirement!
Damn that Fender Strat sounded HUGE, Really liked how even it sounded, maybe a little less bitey than others but it definitely has a lot of punch, The Solar sounded quite similar to me. Maybe somewhat ironically the Dean was my least favourite, but only because of the Dimebucker's highs which I've never been a fan of.
Great video , I love Fender custom shop , Jackson , dean.
That is one seriously MONSTER riff.
I'm really impressed by that Solar. It manages to have a beefy tone that doesn't compromise on treble, which seemed hard for some of the others to pull off. Fishmans were such a good choice for the brand.
It’s more than likely those active pickups carrying a LOT of the weight, not necessarily the guitar itself.
I really like the Custom Shop Strat. Maybe this medium output pickup helps to maintain clarity and articulation. Most of the more modern pickups sound a bit too bassy/ooompfffy for my taste.
That's why i switch to medium output pickup. More musical clarity and articulation 🎶
Very good information delivered here!
Honestly, the whole video sounded wicked!
Both Petrucci guitars sound phenomenal compared to the rest.
in this video no petrucci guitars lol
@@GremlinGatbuger the JPM100P4 and JP15 are Petrucci guitars.
The bottom end of the Washburn was tight! Made my ears happy. Solar was close second for me. Thanks,Ola, this was actually quite fun.
Great comparison! Digging the JL Blackouts & The Dimebucker
Dude...both the strat and the Gretsch sounded awesome!
Loved this riffs, regards Ola!
Awesome test. I didn’t expect to see the Gretsch, that actually sounded badass with that amp and the settings dialed. I loved the low end thickness of the Ibanez. I loved the bite and sparkle of the Dean southern cross. The one guitar that is the most recognizable is the Tele, because it still has that signature twang.
That Strat & the Washburn surprisingly did the trick for me on this one! Nice!!! 👏🏼👏🏼🔥
I love the punch of the washburn!
Man the strat sounds so good with pleasant pick attack! 😍
What a killer riff Ola! Love it!! 😍
Great video awesome guitars super sick amp heavy metal baby hell ya!!
Killer riff!!! Sound great!!!
love dean,tele,jp15 and solar!
That Dimebag cross had that crunch.... The best
thank you for this video! nice comparing
JP15 my favorite. Sounds tight, rich and excellent join in the mix!
My favorites paired with this EVH/Mesa set up in order are
Dime Southern Cross
Solar AB1
Ibanez
Gretch
Least favorite was the tele for this set up, gave an interesting twang though.
Thanks Ola, much love from Alabama, United States 🤙🏼
This is awesome, more like this for sure!!!!
I like the Gretsch and the Strat!
It´s something special with hollow body guitars and high gain :)
I play a Hagstrom Viking with a Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge pickup.
I love that you included the Gretsch.
