On the episode of Tone-Talk Bob Rock was on he was asked about the tone from the black album and said this:
The mics he used were an SM57 and a 421, along with a room mic (an 87 if I remember correctly)
The amps used were a Mark, and Bob's Jose modded Marshall, which was slightly different from most if not all other Jose modded Marshall's. He doesn't mention slaving the Mark into the Marshall like they did for Master or Justice.
He doesn't mention what cabs were used, but you can clearly see in the documentary that they used mainly Marshall cabs.
I can't remember if it was on Tone-Talk or the Andrew Scheps podcast that Bob said that he has used the 70 watt Vintage 30's from the 80's on almost every single thing he's ever recorded.
One interesting thing is Bob said that James used a Mark III, not a IIC+ or IIC++. Maybe he meant a Mark IV

You realize how special of a right hand Hetfield has when you hear another objectively excellent guitarist like Ola try to replicate his feel, and it comes out sounding instantly and obviously different. I'm not even a major Metallica fan, but Hetfield is certainly a special player.

I remember in some guitar general thread on /mu/ some anon asked "how can I learn to downstroke better and faster and don't say "Master of Puppets"". As a bass player I was always curious how they achieved that massive but not overpowering bass tone on the black album and Jason Newsted said in an Interview that they had several rigs going for different purposes (low end, grit, etc.). It's completely bonkers but I think the fact that this album is 30 years old and still can hold up when it comes to sound speaks for itself.

@@Jez3134 I think people overestimated the bands in studio when it comes to fiddling for the sound. More often than not, the engineers will propose some changes, amps etc, after a lot of trial and error, and it's likely that the band simply can't remember or simply never really knew what has been used. A studio when it comes to track guitars is really messy.
Best modern example is Kurt Ballou. Many unknown and modded amp, a gazillion pedals laying around. Always get a killer sound on albums, but track after track, no one can follow up what's going on.

It wasn't all scooped. It's actually a pretty flat tone. The Boogie is naturally scooped, and they did take out some mids in it, but added them back in with the Marshall. That's why the tone has that grind in the mids that's not very Boogie, and lacks the high end fizz of s Boogie.

Dude, that's closer than I've ever heard anyone else get to that epic tone. I'm going to try and use this info to get as close as possible with Amplitube 5. I picked up the Mesa Boogie 2 pack recently which includes the infamous Mark IIC+, so I'm really stoked to attempt to see what I can get out of it. The closest I have to the JCM800 is an older JCM900 clone ("British Tube Lead 2") which isn't great, but I do have Marshall's licensed "JCM Slash" head which is also an older modeler but sounds way better (based on the '87 Silver Jubilee 2555). Neither are perfect, but I'm sure that I'll end up with a pretty cool tone in the end.

      100%..... his exact quote was:
“It is only on some solos we use the JCM 800 as poweramp. Most guitars are with the Boogie powerstage!”
And as for the Marshall connection with the Black album tone, it’s a cab running a Jose modded Marshall blended along with the Mark IIC/IV action through the multiple mikes into the single track that is “the tone”, nothing to do with the power section.

I read that Kirk used the ADA MP-1 for leads on boosted with a boss SD-1 for the AJFA album, I've actually tried this and made a Kemper profile for the Blackened cover I did, and can tell you it sounds pretty legit! Obviously we're talking different albums here, but I don't see why he would stop using the ADA for at least some leads, and just decide to use it for cleans, so I'm going to assume it was used to the black album aswell, I haven't tried it yet though, so can't confirm how close it sounds.
