Wise words...
The bassline of How Many More Times is better
Watchmojo putting "Dazed and Confused" on their top 10 basslines list made Led Zeppelin (especially John Paul Jones) look a bit like stupid musicians but they actually weren't. There are so many better basslines John Paul Jones had written such as "Ramble On" and "How Many More Times"...
@@wakemeupbeforeyoupogo Exactly, the bassline from Ramble On is one of the best basslines

Hell the bass line in Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" is also a great one that is always overlooked.
Nick Beggs....check him out with Howard Jones on 'Too Shy' and watch with amazement at his complex finger work
agreed!
Chris Wolstenholme live playing Hysteria is just something else, so clean.
Easily in my top 3 basslines of all time. I've heard it live 3 times now (2nd Law, Drones, Will of the People) and dear god it's mind blowing!
Not bad, not bad. Very entertaining.

Davie just checks how many people cannot distinguish "Master of Puppets" from "Enter Sandman" :)
Lol I was confused until I saw this comment lol
He does the same thing with Beat It, plays Billie Jean, and other videos he's done the same lol.
Thought the same thing
Also RCHP instead of RHCP lol
I’m starting to believe he’s got dyslexia or something.
For me, one of the best bass lines is from Stevie Wonder's 'Sir Duke' It's epic as it just carries the whole song from start to finish. Not many out there that sound quite like this one.
Gotta add I Wish to the list.
Oh man... so many basslines *make* the song, and you pointed out one that a lot of folks just miss. Excellent selection. Now I have to go on a Stevie Wonder kick. Thanks. I thought I was gonna sleep tonight, but nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.... gonna stay up all night spinning my vinyl.
Might as well add Verdeen White if you're going to get into that realm.

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick is the sickest bass line I can think of at the moment. Stranglers - Peaches is also tasty. But number 1 should be Lou Reed - Walk On the Wild Side.
As a bass player myself, I loved Paul McCartney‘s baseline on Rain, and I loved Chuck Rainey’s baseline on Peg.
Peg is an all-around awesome song.
Oh man, I've always loved Peg! My instructor made me learn it 40 years ago, and that's how I fell hard for SD and Aja. Iconic.

Sarcasm i guess.
I know it's a simple line, but ... Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" always comes to mind for a solid bass line, and solo.
Because of that line I decided to buy a bass and now I'm learned to play.
The chain is simple and iconic, the end gets slightly harder but is petty basic and repetitive yeah
Love that bass line so underrated
Agree. Even though there's barely any bass in it and it mostly just follows the progression, but it's on more than on point. Every single track on "The Chain" could top the top 10 lists in their respective categories. Simply amazing
Oh yeah!!
I find this video not only extremely musically Brilliant, and your choices and comments awesome. Your deadpan face, sarcasm, wit, and great video editing make this video hilarious, original, and really entertaining. Many thanks.
I've got paint drying today. You''d jizz your pants.
Let's face it, there are hundreds of excellent bass lines out there, from "I'm a Man" by The Spencer Davis Group to James Jamerson "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" through Yes, Primus, Metallica, and Rush to name a few. What lifts any one of these excellent bass riffs is its context and ability to set the mood or drive the emotion in the song it's being played.

RIP Neil Peart
He was too weak to play geddy lee's bassline! He could only dream to reach the mastery lever of Neil peart! RIP
That's because he can't play it. Only David Biale can play it.
His finger isn't strong enough 😉
As a diehard Rush fan, I don't feel YYZ is their strongest bassline. There are TONS of underrated songs/basslines, like Marathon man, Vital Signs, The Big Money that have catchy and complex basslines.
@@wyvern4588 I not-jokingly want Marathon played at my funeral. Bassline and all.
My number 1 bassline might be Stu Hamm's rendition of Moonlight Sonata. Weather Report w/ Jaco is challenging. Victor Wooten from Bela Fleck & the Flecktones is a freak of nature too. I haven't played as much lately, but those used to be my top 3:
- Stu Hamm
- Victor Wooten
- Jaco
As far as radio syndicated music, Tim Commerford from Rage Against The Machine had a lot of cool riffs.
I like Stu Hamm's "Country Music from Hell"
I would swap Stu Hamm with Mick Karn, but that's a nice top 3.
John Taylor's bass playing on "Rio" is up there for me.
I'm a Bernard Edwards stan I love that you included "Good Times" in your list. But in my opinion he had even a few better ones than that.
Louis Johnson's bassline for Michael Jackson's "Get on the Floor" is epic as well.
But like you said there are so many very good basslines its really tough to put a top 10 together.
Davide Biale is so talented. You should challenge him to a bass battle

Dazed and Confused, and Give it Away are Iconic baselines, maybe not best technically but the song is defined by them.

have to agree, the heartbreak when he said no to Dazed And Confused
I am kind of in the middle between Michael and Davie; I think that at the beginning, DaC is pretty simple, but then gets pretty fast in the middle and end. However, I think that there are still better Led Zeppelin baselines, such as The Lemon Song and Ramble On, that should have made the so called "list".
Then again, I might be a bit biased, since I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan.😆

Very late to this obviously but Ron Carter's bass work on Also Sprach Zarathustra is pretty amazing.
Obviously not the level of technical difficulty of some of these but his bass line provides much of the variation over a nine minute instrumental track, and it's all melodic and rhythmic rather than slapping and popping (not criticising players who use these techniques, just noting that Carter was working with a more limited toolkit).
Something very special.

A hard bassline doesn't necessarily make it good. Some of these basslines on the list are relatively simple, but they're goddamn iconic. Good music can be simple.
For sure. “Dazed and Confused” is a great bass line, simple or not.
its a literal backward chronological note progression, i hardly consider that a bassline at all. yah its good at complementing the music but its not even that iconic lol
@@justinroy3769 it's literally second only to ramble on when it comes to jpjs basslines.
To add to that, being able to play it does not make you good either. its quite rare to get something you cannot actually play. for example I am a drummer, majority of Tool could be played with 2-3 years of learning drums if you have free time like a student or something. The point is, could you have written / composed something that good? probably not.
