We have fresh seafood because UPS flight hub is in Louisville. Not only do they fly in freshly caught fish, I've heard that there are large live-wells used for transporting fresh farmed fish. It's pretty wild that a landlocked city could be serving you "the catch of the day" seafood.

Louisville native here, great video but also worth mentioning is the the great steamboat race, balloon race and glow during derby. Street rod nationals in August, The Saint James art fair, the bourbon festival, the zombie walk and our impressive park system
I will add if you come here in Sept/Oct. we have the Louder than Life festival for rock/metal music. As far as corrections...you can call it The Derby (most of us do....even if we don't go), I've never met anyone who actually likes a mint julep and I've lived here 40+ years, and we are southern (if you want midwest cross the river....it's there for a reason). Also, as someone else in the comments already mentioned, we care more about college basketball than we do about horses. The UK/UofL dream game is probably marked on more calendars than Christmas (Dec. 22nd this year if you're curious).
Live in Louisville. Do: Visit the riverfront. Great parks, spraygrounds, walk across the river on an old train bridge. Free fun! Don’t: Be knowledgeable about where you are. Western Louisville is not a good place to go if you’re a tourist, Louisville has a bad crime problem that seems to be getting worse each year. Downtown is pretty safe, just be careful going west. I’ve spent a good amount of time in those neighborhoods, not a place for a tourist to be.
Unfortunately the west end was abandoned in the years better 40s-70s because of the civil rights movement. Businesses left and so did community support. I can't speak for every city, but I think there is a similar story.
This was really accurate and gets the stamp of approval from me! The "mid-wester gem with southern flair" couldn't be more accurate. Loved that you mentioned Bardstown Road/the Highlands and all of our parks. And the FOOD! I've lived in ky. My whole life , I've lived and worked in Louisville for a few years.. I did live in South Alabama for 5 years when I was a kid.. and yeah Kentucky thinks we're part of " the South " Wrong! Not even close..
I was born and raised here and I do NOT think of myself to be southern at all. I also, think that it should be Louis-ville, not Louie-ville. If it should be said that way, it should be spelled that way. English, am I right? 😒
Best food/restaurant corridors in Louisville: East Market St, Bardstown Rd between Cave Hill and Taylorsville Rd, and Frankfort between Mellwood and Lexington Rd. Market, of course, is in downtown. Bardstown and Frankfurt are very close. The latter two areas include numerous residential areas and neighborhoods.
I think the most important rules tend to be transportation related. Don't rely on busses in the city. We do not have anything close to the public transportation infrastructure for a city of this size and land area. At the same time, if you want to explore the Highlands, get an uber. The area is one or the most walkable parts of the city, but it is a nightmare to drive, and there isn't a surplus of parking. Get them to drop you off, walk, explore. Hit the side streets. Old Louisville isn't the only place with beautiful Victorian architecture. Don't think you can't get good food in strip malls. We have a surprising number of truly great places that people are reluctant to try because of their location.
Little known fact and interesting trivia/history - Elvis Presley’s grandfather, Jessie D. Presley, lived and died in Louisville. He died in April of 1973 and is buried in Louisville Memorial Gardens. Elvis introduced him at a sold out concert at Freedom Hall in 1971. He also attended two shows his grandson performed at the armory in 1956. Thanks for a great video!
I know that it's not technically in louiville but it's right across the river. The very first Texas Roadhouse Clarksville Indiana about a five-minute drive
Where you hit it home is when you said it's a "Midwestern City with a Southern Vibe". Even Geographically, Louisville is way closer to the Canada border than the Gulf of Mexico, lol
It's definitely some of both. People have a hard time with that--it has to be one thing or the other and they want to fight about it. It's a mix--both southern and mid-western.
Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Kingdom and the airport. Those are the only places I've been in that city. I'm from the Lexington area, another great city in Kentucky!
Why is there a crime problem? Why aren’t the laws enforced? Why would the people resort to crime? Asking because all big problems are awaiting solutions.
Lou-uh-vull (sat it fast)! Stay away from the West-End it's WWIII. Don't come in August (hot as fck) Don't come in Jan-Feb (cold as fck) March is the cloudiest month. Check ya calendar for Waterfront concerts. Tons of local restaurants on: Main St Bardstown rd Frankfort Ave
No doubt about the weather. Spring and Fall are fantastic (usually). I mean you never know what you're going to get too far ahead of time but the best weather is always in those two seasons. The one thing you can predict for sure is winter will be too cold and summer will usually be too hot depending on your preference. Some like it hot. 😆
The Parklands on the outskirts of Jefferson County/Louisville have really beautiful fields of flowers blooming in the spring and summer and even the fall. I prefer it as my go to park over the other parks.
My hometown! Don't forget the Old Spaghetti Factory, The Science Center for kids, Star of Jefferson, Conrad Castle, St. James neighborhood, definitely hit Bardstown Rd, and thanks for saying "Looavul"! (Not exactly Louisville, but a visit to Waverly Hills during Halloween time is so fun!)
@@karenhackney9920 valid point. A tourist probably wouldn't realize Waverly Hill's is basically a suburb of Louisville. Most people don't realize that places like Shively and Lyndon are in Louisville, but they both have their own mayors.

There are numerous "REAL" distilleries right in Louisville and within a very short drive of downtown Louisville. I've been to those and one, Makers Mark in Loretto, KY. I've also been to one in Nelson County, I think it was Heaven Hill but, not sure. I know they also have a presence in Louisville/Jefferson Co., KY.
@@terrib627 I think I did mention Maker's, which is a Beam Bourbon. There is however, a bit of a controversy in the Bluegrass as two distilleries claim to be the oldest/longest running. Those two being Beam and Buffalo Trace.
Glad you liked my hometown. It has a surprising eclectic amount of ethnic restaurants for a smallish southern town...got to go to bardstown Kentucky if you want the real bourbon small town feel. About 45 minutes south

Seafood in Louisville was swimming in the ocean yesterday because UPS Air Hub is in town. Most non-coastal cities get seafood from 2 days ago. Rolled oysters are big in Louisville as well as great Cod sandwiches which are prevalent at summer Catholic picnics and fish frys. Must try an original Kern’s Bakery Derby Pie (trademarked) and famous bourbon balls that were not mentioned in video. I suggest a butterkuchen at Nords bakery if non-chocolate lover’s
Thinking of moving there. We have racehorses so it’s a given! I’m glad I watched this it really is a wonderful city and my husband and I are foodies LOL
It’s a great place to visit. Living here, especially if you’re not from here, is a different story. The town is very provincial. I’ve been here 16 years and I still feel like a visitor.
I've been watching your videos for years as I've also traveled to some of the places you have (mostly in Italy) so it was a bit of a shock for me to see you were in the city where I was born. I have lived just 10 miles north of Louisville all my life so I still consider it my city. You did a great job with this. You could obviously spend hours going over details about various parts of town but this was a great overview.
Next time, don't forget the Big Four Bridge. It's a landmark. It's a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that spirals up from Louisville Waterfront Park and crosses the Ohio River before it descends on the Indiana side (Jeffersonville). I think it's about a mile long.
And there are some good places to eat over on that side of the river too. The buttermilk fried chicken at Red Yeti's might be the best chicken I've ever had.
I would add don't expect a lot of horse racing knowledge from the locals. We act like horse racing experts two weeks out of the year but that's about it. Now if you want some basketball information you've come to the right place. We can talk your ear off about basketball 365-24-7. Basketball is a major passion around here considering The University of Louisville, The University of Kentucky, and Indiana University are all three in the top ten of greatest programs in college basketball history and all three have large fan bases here in the city. Soccer is making a huge surge here but it has a few more generations to go before it can catch up to our passion for basketball.
We spent alot if time in Louisiville when my youngest daughter was sick, we were there every week going to Drs and we would visit different places while we were there just to make her experience more than just visiting the hospital or Doctors office. We went across to Jeffersonville Indiana and ate at Cluckers which was really good and we visited museums and we loved just walking around the city.
Thank you for going way beyond bourbon and the horse race scene. Lou-a-vul has SO much -- the best 1800s Victorian and Greek Revival architecture in the U.S. The cultural attractions are major league -- theater and classical music. And the museums could fill a month's itinerary. Come here, folks!

I did live in South Alabama for 5 years when I was a kid.. and yeah Kentucky thinks we're part of " the South "
Wrong! Not even close..
I was born and raised here and I do NOT think of myself to be southern at all. I also, think that it should be Louis-ville, not Louie-ville. If it should be said that way, it should be spelled that way. English, am I right? 😒
Lived here 2 years, one as a Lyft drive... very accurate video!!
As a Louisville native, I can attest everything this man said is PERFECT. So inclusive and accurate.
It's the northernmost southern city
It's definitely some of both. People have a hard time with that--it has to be one thing or the other and they want to fight about it. It's a mix--both southern and mid-western.
Kentucky is a gorgeous state
True but parts of the state can get backwards and boring.
Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Kingdom and the airport. Those are the only places I've been in that city. I'm from the Lexington area, another great city in Kentucky!
Don’t get carjacked or shot…the city is setting some records this year
Great review. Louisville is my hometown and current home. So much to love here. Thanks for the review.
There's a cute local bookstore called Carmichael's with locations on both Bardstown and Frankfurt, and coffee shops galore on both roads.
Glad you mentioned the high crime
Murder city. Stay out of the west end. 😢
Why is there a crime problem? Why aren’t the laws enforced? Why would the people resort to crime? Asking because all big problems are awaiting solutions.
Lou-uh-vull (sat it fast)!
Stay away from the West-End it's WWIII.
Don't come in August (hot as fck)
Don't come in Jan-Feb (cold as fck)
March is the cloudiest month.
Check ya calendar for Waterfront concerts.
Tons of local restaurants on:
Main St
Bardstown rd
Frankfort Ave
Louisville in August is like Satan's ballsack.
@@amarsh73 😅
This all checks.
Waverly Hills is in Louisville.
@@amarsh73 Not right in the city, so many people don't know about it.
@@karenhackney9920 valid point. A tourist probably wouldn't realize Waverly Hill's is basically a suburb of Louisville. Most people don't realize that places like Shively and Lyndon are in Louisville, but they both have their own mayors.
Don’t forget Old Louisville for the many streets of beautiful Victorian painted ladies that have been used in Hollywood movies.
Which ones?
A few of the parks were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Cherokee, Seneca, and Iroquois parks are really nice.
The Parklands of Floyd's Fork is better than all of them.
@@jonnyboom5993 is that why Cherokee park is the most visited/used municipal park in the country?
@@LordHarv The country? LOL, it's not even the most used in the county. In fact, Parklands is the most used.
@@jonnyboom5993 of course I can no longer find proof, but I certainly see more people in cherokee
@@LordHarv I have been to both many times. Of course you see more at Cherokee because ppl are more concentrated. Parklands is 6 parks connected by the Louisville loop, it is massive. Everything Cherokee has, it has more and better objectively.
Yayyyy, I appreciate you pronouncing Louisville correctly
LOL I appreciated that, too. I was also thinking that, as for mispronouncing our city's name, Mark is right, we won't get mad at someone for it. But what he didn't mention, is that we WILL giggle about you later, to our friends LOL!! To anyone else reading this, we don't laugh in a mean spirited way. It's just funny to us, because it's always easy to tell if someone isn't a local. 😂😂
Also if you want to go on a great bourbon tour around Kentucky call Mint Julep tours...
I'd encourage people to do that because the countryside outside of Louisville is very pretty, especially during the spring and summer.
If you want to get a full bourbon history leave the city and go out and see the actual distilleries in Nelson County.
@@ald8612 LOL And to think everyone hasn't even mentioned the one that started the whole thing...BEAM.
@@terrib627
I think I did mention Maker's, which is a Beam Bourbon.
There is however, a bit of a controversy in the Bluegrass as two distilleries claim to be the oldest/longest running. Those two being Beam and Buffalo Trace.
Marion County, too.
As a Louisville native, I can safely say that I really don’t care about the “the” before Derby
Glad you liked my hometown. It has a surprising eclectic amount of ethnic restaurants for a smallish southern town...got to go to bardstown Kentucky if you want the real bourbon small town feel. About 45 minutes south
Born and raised there, just moved to Jersey but I wish I could move back. Thank you for showcasing Louisville, KY for all its wonderful spots and food joints!
I came to Louisville from jersey for school😂where in jersey did you move to?
Best known for there college sports and The Derby and Horses
Thanks for visiting my town. Great video!
Took a girl’s trip there in June. Stayed in the NuLu area which had great food and bars. Went to Churchill Downs and learned how to bet on horses. Went to a Drag Brunch. The whole experience was epic! We’ll be back!
You did it right!
Victory park is a nice park to visit as well especially at night the locals are especially nice if you wear red
😅
You trying to get somebody hurt 😭😭
Two best things that come out of Louisville, 65 N and 64 W.
Make sure to visit the wonderful West End and talk to all the lovely people! So friendly and not racist!
The loisville science center was one of my favorite places to go as a kid its really fun all though its kinda for younger kids but its still really fun
Copper & kings and Kentucky peerless totally worth a stop
Great video! Lots of great homes and architecture in Louisville, too.
Louisville!!! My hometown for ten years, I love this town and will be returning soon. Awesome place to live work and play.
No way! Down in my hometown! I see you enjoyed Havana Rumba!
That's where I fell in love with Cuban chimichurri sauce.
If you do go there, come to New Albany, smaller city nearby with some cool Underground Railroad history, and full of local businesses downtown
New Albany is a cool spot!
I'm born and raised in Louisville. You explained us well. Come see us. We're Awesome
My city ❤🖤❤🖤
Professor, when did you come around Louisville? I was just there for a soccer game! Thanks for the uploads. Don't...forget the sport scene as well
Last month. It was a fun time
@@woltersworld I wish I had known you were here. I could have at least waved!
Thank you for all of this interesting information... I’m excited and intrigued and dust dying to visit..... Thank You 😊
Next time, don't forget the Big Four Bridge.
That’s a great spot, Lissa!
Very true.
We spent alot if time in Louisiville when my youngest daughter was sick, we were there every week going to Drs and we would visit different places while we were there just to make her experience more than just visiting the hospital or Doctors office. We went across to Jeffersonville Indiana and ate at Cluckers which was really good and we visited museums and we loved just walking around the city.
native here- I’ve been to cluckers once but OH MY Is it good
Don't forget cave Hill cemetery it's beautiful it's where Muhammad Ali is buried and Colonel Sanders
Thanks For Visiting My City ! & Love That You Pronounce It Right ! 🌹
Another great vid, thanks Mark!
Omg I live in new Albany Indiana literally 5 minutes away, I love your channel! Wish I could have met you
Thanks DJ. We are going to be filming in Indiana early kept year so hopefully can make you proud
I’m a huge fan of New Albany!!
3:22 Loved the strategically-placed traffic light. LOL
This is crazy coincidence. I watched your video about Jamaica then went there now I come back to see your in my home town now 😳
Thank you for going way beyond bourbon and the horse race scene. Lou-a-vul has SO much -- the best 1800s Victorian and Greek Revival architecture in the U.S. The cultural attractions are major league -- theater and classical music. And the museums could fill a month's itinerary. Come here, folks!
Another Louisville event that deserves a mention is the Jack o Lantern Spectacular held every October!
We're also a good place for artists and musicians!
Hot Brown was first made during the 1937 flood at the Brown Hotel... And we are called the mouth of the South
I’m from here and I say “The Derby” all the time.
Thanks for finally doing L’ville!! Now Lexington!! Haha 💋
Make sure you visit the West End! Chickasaw & Shawnee parks are beautiful! But leave before it gets dark! Lol!
You forgot to mention portland and russel
All great places if you plan to get murdered!!
Agree, but better to have a local with you, to steer in the better areas to visit.
Probably best just not to bother.
Oh I just missed you. Thank you for stopping by
It's great to see you make a video of my hometown!!
Also, don't forget to spend some time in the Highlands!
Funny, I'm watching this on the night of Thunder Over Louisville, lol. Didn't get to go this year, unfortunately. I was born and raised in Louisville. But I lived in Jeffersonville, Indiana, for a few years. I lived right by the waterfront, right behind Jeffboat. The planes from the air show flew right over my house, and I could even see part of the fireworks from my driveway! Super cool.😊
