Did a big chunk of bourbon trail 2yrs ago. Me and the wife got so wasted, really enjoyed ourselves. I handed the keys to our oldest boy, he did a great job driving us to and fro. Kinda surprised a 14 year old picked up driving so quickly.

Some advice. If you do Makers Mark. Become an ambassador. It’s free. You get your name engraved on a barrel that will age. You get a free Christmas gift every year. Most importantly, you get free tours for life from Makers Mark for life.
Side mark. Bardstown is the closest big city to you. Christmas time it’s beautiful down there.

I want to give a huge shout out to buffalo trace and makers mark, they both are absolutely beautiful and the employees are so friendly and informative, they are exactly what I would envision a old school distillery being like and they made my trip to Kentucky last year

We went to Buffalo Trace last week in the pouring rain. Not for a tour, but just a tasting. There was about 125 people standing in the line with umbrellas just to get in to the gift shop. A parking lot attendant said the line is long every day, rain or shine. We left.

Thank you for telling people to not shot the whiskey. I do tastings and people always just throw it back and then wonder why it’s harsh. Go to Bardstown. So many distilleries around there to make it a good hub. Always love finding inexpensive bourbon that you can only get in KY.

I blame cowboy films for shot culture. I mean sure, if you're just trying to get hammered then that's the way to do it, but you want cheap stuff for that, not quality sipping spirits.

Good video. Reminds me of the last time I visited Woodford Reserve. I had an early visit planned. Because I was afraid I would get lost I arrived really early. I saw a deer with her fawn at a stop sign. I stayed there for several minutes just watching them. (No traffic.)
I also stumbled across a small park. They had viewing blinds for birds. Some nice plants and butterflies to look at. Informative placards. I was the only one there.
The visitor center had museum exhibits which I looked at after the tour while I enjoyed the candy. Warning: if you eat too many pieces, you might start to get a little woozy. They don't cook off the alcohol. Candy pieces were included in tour price.

Checking with the distillery before you schedule a trip is good advice, too. I visited Maker's Mark a few years ago and my visit happened to be at the time of year they don't run the distillery. It was still a great tour and visit, just no fermenting or distilling going on. I was totally unaware that they ever shut down the process. Thanks for the video!

I went on the bourbon trail in 2021 with several buddies and here's some more don'ts I learned:
Don't sleep-in too late. Most distilleries close by 5PM so get started early and have a good plan of where to go to maximize your time.
Don't forget to stop by a couple liquor stores in the area. They stock many bourbons you likely cannot get at home and many are cheaper than you'll find online for sale. You can likely stop by the liquor stores after the distilleries close at 5.
Don't even wait until a few weeks before your trip to book your distillery tours and tastings. Most were booked solid 3 months in advance for the weekend in mid summer when I went.
Don't book more than a couple distillery tours, but do tastings everywhere you possibly can. Tours take up a lot of time that you could spend trying all sorts of rare bourbons and seeing many different unique distilleries. Most places won't even let you try a sample of their offerings without booking a tasting well in advance.
Don't skip distilleries you may not have heard of before. Each one offers a unique experience and bourbon you'll likely be pleasantly surprised by.
Don't rush, but don't waste time either. There are probably a lot of places you'll want to visit. You should take a moment to appreciate each distillery they all have a unique presentation and experience. You can hit a lot of places in one day in downtown Louisville, plan for a lot of driving when visiting Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey and Buffalo Trace (all of which are absolutely not to be missed).
Don't forget to take a full pack of Liquid IV's and water bottles! This might be the single most important tip I list here and seriously helped getting through 3 full days of unending whiskey drinking. Just mix a packet of Liquid IV into a new water bottle first thing in the morning and again later or throughout the day. It'll help keep you hydrated and energized.

Our backroads in Central KY are narrow, curvy, and hilly. This is especially true around the Makers distillery. Take your time because you don't want to rear-end a car or truck you didn't see. Worse yet, you don't want to go off the road and hit a tree or go down into a ditch.

Love the video Mark! We just came back from Louisville this past weekend. One piece of advice- we paid more per bottle at the actual distilleries than we did at Costco. My advice is to check pricing at Costco or at a liquor store before you buy at the gift shop! If it's their "bread and butter" offering, you can likely find it nearby for cheaper.

100% agree with everything you said. Make reservations because they book up, buy what you can’t get at home unless they have really good deals on the prices like Buffalo Trace. You can get their high end bourbon practically 1/2 off. Check their website in the morning. They post what is available that day. And get there early, when the sell out it’s gone for the day. And they don’t have the same bourbon available every day. Also I would recommend staying in Bardstown as well as Louisville. They have great distilleries in both locations. With the Bourbon Trail book, when you finish them all in there you get a coin. There are a few different books available as well but the Bourbon trail one is the most popular. I just got back from a long weekend there a few weeks ago. I enjoy going in the fall. It was my 2nd year doing it. Definitely plan on going back again next year!

Bardstown is a good location to stay. You are so right. Thanks for the extra info on checking on the bourbon availability. We just got unlucky. Woodford didn't have theirs because they couldn't get the bottles. A couple other were already sold out. Bought one bottle from a place because it wasn't in the stores. I was so hopeful to drive home with a box full of bourbon I couldn't get at home. But only had a couple bottles :(

Do any of the distilleries have restaurants that are worth visiting?

Bardstown Distillery has a nice restaurant, Willett has food (small plates) and Jim Beam has an eatery.

How easily can I find some moonshine in Kentucky….

they commercially make it now, so it is not quite the same. I have found the most "moonshine" from people's uncle... it is always someone's uncle... never them or their dad... like Uncle Jesse from Dukes of Hazzard
