the multi watt sounded tighter and a lot meaner wich i absolutely love.the both sounded great but the multi watt is the winner for me.it was just meaner.!! and nice to see you back in action again bro !! keep up the good work and i loved all of your playing.i always have. dude you rock.

@@Jon_Tate I am so on the fence with my Boogie GAS. Mark VII coming today but really want a recto. However I love how the Roadster has Reverb, 4 channels and a few more bells and whistles. But in the past I SUCK at dialing out flub like you did. I also have some OD pedals and love the Precision Drive with the attack knob for really tightening up the flub.

The Roadster certainly an extremely versatile amp for the features that you mentioned. If you already have the Mark on lock - and if you can find a deal on a Roadster - that would certainly allow you to cover the iconic Dual Rec sound.
Yes it can get flubby with your rather typical EQ settings (most people dime out the bass, cut mids, etc.) I dont think needing to use an OD to shape your sound is a deal breaker - I mean - why not make use of all those over drives anyhow!!
Thank you for doing this (and doing it the right way) where you switch the amps back and forth multiple times for each measure in the riffs. It's so much easier to make a determination this way over playing for a minute or two and then switching. I pretty much agree, the multi-watt is definitely brighter/tighter. Good stuff! Thanks again!

The Roadster is an outstanding amp, the main take away I have noticed since getting the Multi-watt - is you absolutely MUST have a overdrive of some sort to tighten things up for higher gain stuff. You have a Roadster and know how versatile it is and a video going through every single possible setting and EQ option would be a long ass video haha.
I could have probably spent more time and dialed the Roadster in closer to the Multi-watt, right or wrong I dial in the amps to sound what is "good" for me on a given day... Some days its a hit, other days not so much - haha.

I liked the Multi-watt the best on the modern high gain the most but the surprising thing was that I preferred the roadster for the vintage mode. Cleans and Pushed sounded really close either way to me.
Yea the Roadster is still no slouch. The Roadster has some cool "mojo" if I can so so myself. I actually kinda prefer the cleans on the Roadster slightly more, but honestly that could be tweaked out on either amp. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
This right here is how you demo amps. Tasty, riff driven playing and lots of back and forth makes it easy to compare for the listener.
For me, the multi-watt takes the cake. That extra top end aggression and slightly quicker low end really reminds me of the rev f.....but with alot more flexibility and friendlier price tag.

@@Jon_Tate If I wasn't up in Canada, we could arrange a shootout. My bandmate has...wait for it....3 rev f's. Lol! Two dual recs and a triple. I have played them alot and also compared them to my old rev G dual. There absolutely IS a difference. The rev F is a bit tighter and trades in some of that low-mid thump for more upper mid aggression. It does remind me of your multi-watt, so I would be super curious to compare them!
Thanks for such a great video! I have always wanted a Mesa. Almost bought a you'll rectifier Roadster this morning for a really good price off of eBay but after hearing this I will certainly wait to find the multi watt. In my opinion it is much clearer. Or do you believe with a little tweaking of the EQ it could obtain that level of clarity?
Glad I could help. Don't get me wrong- I spent many years with my Roadster and its near and dear to my heart. I tweaked and tweaked, and tweaked before this video and well after - and the results are the same.
You could simply run a OD in front of the Roadster across all channels to get close to the Multi-Watt clarity- but with an OD, acting as a EQ and boost- you never really get a nice bloom on the low end, and even then- its still just "Almost there".
The main difference between the Roadster and Multi-Watt global EQ is the lower mid range, its just ever present and just muddies the waters too much- specially seeing how well the Mulit handles things.
If you are into collecting amps- yea sure- go with the Roadster- but if you can only get one or the other- Id seriously and humbly suggest holding out for the Multi-Watt.

For me it was the Roadster. I love the versatility and the cleans were clearer, the decider was the Tweed and Brit options as versatility is a big thing & I have no problem with needing an OD for chan 3&4. I used to own a Tri Rec. If the versatility wasn't a priority, I'd go for the revamped Dual Rec. Sick vid man, and thanks!.

At the end of the day there isn't a single album out there - that somebody will numb their nose at saying "Meh, they used a Roadster with an OD". well maybe there are such cork sniffers out there- but haha you get my point. I've been playing a Roadster 2x12 combo since 2008, love that amp but the multi watt has it beat IMHO. The roadster is a dark amp no question. Over the years i ran a TS808 org reissue to help clear some mud on ch.3+4 and that def helped. Whats really saved it for me the last year was adding a MXR 10 Band EQ in the loop and the addition of a Horizon Devices(MXR) Precision Drive out in front of the pre amp. I've had a bunch more fun jamming since i've tightened up the low end and eliminated some of the darker tones that w/o a boost you just cant dial out! In the next few years though im gonna treat myself to a new mesa, its either gonna be the dual rec multi or a mark 5. The roadster is a tweakers amp for sure, i still find new settings each time i jam. It was a $2400 investment that has surely been worth every penny. Awesome playing BTW man, crazy to think this was uploaded just as the CV19 pandemic was shuttering the world..2 years goes by pretty fast!
I never got around to using a EQ like you described though I wish I would have. I bet that combination with the OD is pretty gnarly. Yes - haha crazy to think its been 2 years. Yea the Roadsters top end cn certainly be matched or gets closer to the top end of the Multi- the big difference is the low end, its either there and loose or its chopped off. Great video, man! I'm not sure which I liked better. The Roadster sounded bigger, more full in some instances that I preferred. Then the multi watt sounded more aggressive and direct in others that I liked a lot as well. I have a 3 channel non multi watt dual rec and I freaking love it. A Roadster would be an awesome addition to my collection. Once again, great video, bro, and hope to see more. New sub.
Thank you very much Monty! I appreciate that! Yea again the Roadster is no slouch, and is very fulfilling when jamming in a room with one. I almost think that it comes down to what camp one is in - see I do quite a bit of recording and now with the Multi-watt I can get more of a "mix ready" sound. Now of course one can get there was well with tools such as an OD or post processing EQ.
I would feel safe in betting that your current non-multi-watt Dual Rec will continue to serve you well for decades if not more. Thanks once again for watching and the sub!
Great video. I've been running a Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra through my Roadster. Surprisingly, channel 1 sounds like absolute raging magic with the Sabbra. It's just the best clean and saturated distortion sound I've ever had. Love it.

The amps sound extremely different. The Multi-Watt seems to have a lot more Treble in the sound.
I wonder how close either could emulate the other by adjusting the Treble and Presence controls though. They actually sounded pretty similar as far as gain structure goes.
Yes the gain structures are very similar if not damn near identical. The issue with getting the the Roadster to sound more like the multi-watt is that the EQ curves and resonant frequencies are much much different. If you crank the treble- there is a softening of the mid range that happens on the Roadster- and oddly enough when you boost the presence on the Roadster the low end also boosts, with a ton of unwanted or not so useful low end at that.
In my estimation they spent much more time getting the multi-watt to almost perfectly sit in a mix (live or studio) with very little fuss.
The Roadster has a less presence kind of sound with every comparison? It was smoother and deeper. The multi watt was very stabby and in your face! I'm in the market for either of these and I may be leaning towards the roadster? Great Vid. I wanted to know the differences between these 2 variations.
Thanks! I don't think you would be disappointed with either - the Roadster has some features that the newer Multi-watt does not - mostly on channel 1 and 2 - with the tweed and brit settings - so it is extremely versatile. All depends on if you are looking for the ultimate dual recto sound (Multi-watt) or a supremely utilitarian work horse (Roadster). Thanks for watching and the comment!

Thanks for the complements! Im not quit sure if the Badlander scratches an itch that I cannot get from my multi-watt. I sometimes like the saggy-ness of the tube rectification - but thats just me. So at least for now - I dont see a Badlander in my collection - Im sure some other kick ass channel will compare the two before too long.

Hey Jeff thanks for watching and the comment. The MXT delay was the Carbon Copy Deluxe in the FX loops. Damn a blackface rack-mount- dang!! It could be worse, you could be addicted to Blackstar, or worse- hahaha. I bet you have endless possibilities with the JP2C+. But, I agree both are stable work horses for live and in the studio- thanks once again!

Hey! Thanks for your complements. Really appreciate it! The pick ups are the stock LPC pups 490R and 498T - I simply removed the covers. The "speakers" used in this was an impulse response of a Mesa OS Cab from Two Notes - I used the Torpedo Live just to ensure no user error in mic placement on my end - and to eliminate that variable so that you can hear the difference in the amp precisely.

I used Bowers & Wilkins DM602 monitors and a QSC 500watt amp to listen. Roadster, warmer/darker, looser and Multi Watt is clearer, open, pissed off and tight. Both are great and probably can be dialed it similar to each other. Great job, now show me how to record video/audio so well!
Dang! Thats quite the speaker set up! Observations seem spot on. In my own testing I have tried to dial them in to each other- the tale tale for the Roadster is the loose-ness in the low end. Which in all fairness- a common OD/clean boost can remedy that.

I thought the multi watt was a bit brighter.. I thought the roadster did better with effects.. were you running the delay through the fx loop? To me the fx just sounded more “finished” on the roadster
Interesting observation.... I did have the delay running through the FX loops on both. Though one was a MXR Carbon Copy delay - and the other was a MXR Echo-Plex- I tried to set the delay to be as neutral on both; On both amps the FX level send was straight up at noon on both. A more prudent "test" would be using the same delay pedal on both- but I was a little lazy on that particular day - hahaha.
Thank you for this. pretty nuts I gotta give it to the multi watt it cut through alot better in the mix with no processing. The roadster is rather muddy. Although some brightness with some OD and some minor EQ and it would be in almost the same ball park.

Multiwatt hands down, Roadster = blanket, however, when the OD entered, it was perfectly eq'd for the Roadster as it is a darker amp, and it was a little to brite with the Multiwatt, still the MW hands down
like the multi watt without the OD and the roadster with the OD. either way, both sounded great.

Thanks for watching! They are within 1 dB of each other. The excessive low end that the Roadster has eats up quite a bit of headroom, thus giving you the perception that the Multi-watt is louder. I knew the internet world would roast me if I did not gain match these as close as I could haha

Spearhead Studios no worries! I’ll do some tweaking myself when my Dual Rec comes in. I wish I could have gotten a blacked out one, but I found a great deal on a regular chrome plate one. Perhaps I’ll be brave and replace the front plate myself, haha.

@@Jon_Tate Yeah dude, I've been really enjoying mine.
I've found on the Lead/Orange channel, putting the presence about 1 o'clock, master about 9-10 o'clock, gain about 2 o'clock (with an od 808 boost), and the bass around noon, with the mids maxed and treble all the way down (output of the amp around 10 oc'lock) it is just the most gnarly meanest most pissed off sounding amp I've ever had.
The whole mids up treb down thing seemed crazy to me until I tried it. Mind was blown.
@@lodougherty I will have to try that - I know with these Mesa's some of them almost have a Pultech style EQ. where if you boots the mids- there in an inherent bump somewhere along the line. So I could totally see that working- specially with the presence boosted as you mentioned. Glad to hear that you are Mid friendly - BTW- hahaha. you can tell much about a person by how much mids' they dial in- hahah

Side note. The Blacked Out version is hand wired according to this Mesa Rep I talked to, and they're voiced even slightly different than the regular multi watt, that sits at the 2229.99 price point. I had to check once I saw it said hand wired on the back instead of hand built.

Hello, thanks for the excellent video. What do you think about if i use that “darkly” roadster on my marshall 1960av cab, will it help to darkness of amp?
I have to ask--when is the last time the tubes were changed in the Roadster?
The last re-tube I did on the Roadster was May 2019. It was a full blown replacement, with SPAX7 in the V1 as well.
Apparently the main difference in the preamp circuitry between them is the values of the presence pots. Can you get the roadster to sound more similar to the dual by just turning up the presence? (keeping everything else the same) Might be an interesting experiment!
There is presumably more going on under the hood than just presence values. Its almost as if they re-EQ'd things quite a bit. In my own private testing I did attempt such a thing - however with the Roadster when you increase the Presence there was also an increase in the low end, as in it got much looser. I did this analysis with a Match EQ and not only heard the difference in doing that but seen it graphically. On the other hand when increasing the presence on the Multi-watt you do still get a slight bump of low end but its tighter and filters at around 60-70hz if my memory serves me correctly.
That is honestly of no consequence to the Roadster, as in a live setting the FOH will roll that excess low end off- and in a mix, its chopped off as well.

Spearhead Studios Thank you for the detailed and informative reply! This has debunked a long standing assumption of mine, and may have helped to save my multiwatt from being traded for a roadster. Out of interest, did you manage to get the two to sound the same from any amount of tweaking, or was there always a small difference in tone?
Tian Lee I’ll trade you my Roadster for your multi watt. The roadster is just darker on channel 4. I much prefer brighter for what I do.
What are the pickups in that Gibson Les paul custom ?
Just the stock Gibson 490/498's. I just removed the pick up covers, that is all.
Kick ass riffage dude...i love the dual rec....i just acquired one used in mint condition for the exception of some channel popping when switching to the orange channel....does your dula rec do this?....mesa told me its normal for the dual recs and its called capacitance discharge....just doesn't seem normal to me...but the amp sounds amazing and I love it....i have a whirlwind 10 band eq that I run thru the effects loop as well as a waza sd1...but with the eq you dont need the overdrive.....most of the tjme I just play the red channel with no pedals. Love the pure, raw sound of that amp.man!.....new sub by the way., really enjoyed how you put this video together ...not alot of bullshit talking, just some kick ass riffage with bad ass drum tracks...
Thanks for the sub! Really appreciate that - and your kind words in regards to the riffage. My Roadster did have the popping issue- however I resolved that in this manner - Id turn the amp on in stand by - and then I would cycle through every footswitch option while in standby - this way the discharge did not come through my speakers. If you do it this way - when your amp is ON - you can footswitch around with no popping.
I will say I have not noticed the popping issue from my Multi-watt Dual Rec - at least as of yet. So we shall see.

Did you had a chance to compare those beasts with amp sims? Just bought one and I am not sure if should be happy..
I have not done a video on such- but I have in my own personal testing. Maybe its just me - but most amp sims fall flat IMO. The only amp sim that I dig and can stand to use for writing and quick riff capturing is the Neural DSP Nolly sim. However that does not mimic a Dual Rec.
What is giving you the fuzzy eyebrow on the amp? Are there characteristics that you are used too or? I can tolerate the Neural DSP sims but I would still take a real deal Dual Rec over it any day of the week- specially if I am recording for real.
@@Jon_Tate I am trying to set Mesa plugin by IK multimedia lately. I would say it was worth the €88 but I prefer the real amp for sure, well the amp is 20 times the price :)

Which pickups in the Les Paul?
The stock Gibson pick ups- 490R/498T - I just removed the covers on them. Though I am contemplating swapping them out for a more Seymour Duncan JB vibe.
trough my headphone, the multiwatt sound very good. very articulate and clear. Scoop but not too much. The Roadster on the other hand sound muffle and dark. Too dark. I wonder if the presence knob on both amp behave the same way. I have a roadking 2 myself and i don't believe it sound as dark as the roadster did. But it could be due to me being accustomed to it and having nothing to compare it too.

@@marcandrenault1233 Thanks Marc! Yea the Presence controls on the Roadster between Ch 3 and Ch 4 act very different from one another - and in theory could get closer to that bite of the Multi. I suppose no A/B is perfect unless one has the time to go through almost every setting possible on each amp. Glad you figged the recording man! Hope you are well and take care!
@@Jon_Tate to me got 100% out of the Multi, even 200% it was that good. Im not sure i heard 100% of what the roadster can be. If i have read correctly, you have use the same setting on both amp. Do you think you would be able to get the roadster to sound more like the multi ( or just a bit brighter) by using different settings?
@@marcandrenault1233 Yes to some some degree- I could in theory get the Roadster closer tot he Multi- and have by happenstance in prior videos. The multi-watt is finally super easy to dial in, the Roadster takes a little brain power- but its in there for sure.

Multi watt seems like it has more bite.
That would be an accurate observation - its an incredible amp, as a matter of fact I ended up selling off my Roadster and Mark V simply because of this amp.
The multi-watt sounds clearer.

the roadster red channel sounds better to me. more brutal. the multiwatt almost sounds happy.
NO HAPPINESS HERE! lol The Roadster is a bit more pleasing just jamming alone- but once it gets in the mix it can be fickle- but not bad- thanks for watching!
What power valves (tubes) were in the Roadster and DR?
Both these amps where running matched Mesa branded tubes- (Green), on both. The Roadster however did have SPAX7's in the V1 and V4 position where as the Multi-watt was straight 12AX7's.

Amazing video man. Love the riffs. I'm becoming a mesa fan since my trip to sweetwater. Played a badlander now I'm hooked. The dual rec multi is the best sounding with gain. Cleans go to the roadster. A dirty tree would make that roadster impossible to beat though
Thanks!! Yea the Multi is certainly a very versatile amp. I myself have not had a chance to mess with a Badlander, but want too. I agree with you on the Roadster cleans, while the Multiwatt cleans are very pristine, the Roadster cleans have a mojo that's pretty fun to play with. Thanks again for the comment, and watching!

multi watt is most brighter than the roadster on distortion , the roadster is better on cleans ... MESA REALLY FUCKING RULES!!!!!!!
So what you are saying is....Is that the multi-watt isn't as "darkly" and the Roadster? I do contend that while the Multi cleans are spectacular- I thing that the Roadster cleans, to crunch to tweed - has the most tonal flexibility.
