Best gear channel. No over processing in the DAW ( at least it seems pretty raw), he’s a fooking riff daddy and knowledgeable. Hell yeah!
Dawwww
That Badlander sounds so superior I think. Bit of an Exodus tone. Gary Holt. Love the black diamond plate also. Was wondering how it sounds with less Gain cranked up? Also are you going direct out the speaker emulated DI?
The Multiwatt sounds more like what my idea of a Rectifier tone is. The Badlander sounds more 5150-ish, because it's tighter and more mid-focused.
The Badlander unboosted was close to perfect for my taste, and very close to the boosted Multiwatt. Great comparison, man. Subbed!
Thanks man! I agree on all your points here! Hope the video helped!
@@belligerentamateur helped my thirst for high gain amps and sweet riffs! No purchasing decisions though, I'm broke af. Looking forward to that 5150 stealth and Badlander comparison
Great comparison you did a good job showing us the best of both amp! I love them both, but prefer the midrange grunt of the Badlander! Good job Kyle keep them coming 👍
Badlander I like better personally
Awesome video! I would like to hear the multiwatt orange channel too, face to the badlander. I prefer orange channel for heavy riffs on mine. But really great comparision.
This was very helpful, thank you!
Digging that Badlander!
Hey great vid bro! Have you tried putting 6l6’s in the badlander? I think it would make sound a little more full on the bottom end.
Hey, thank you! Yes I did, made a video on it too! Made next to no difference. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/uHa8NeN_Ftw/v-deo.html
Now I want a Badlander 100.
They should have stuck to the 3 channel on the bandlander.
What power tubes in each ? we both know el34's are gonna have a much more present and aggressive upper mids, than 6l6's.
I gotta say im an el34 guy. Presently I have a mark V35, and a TC50 w/el34's, I gave my son my old f100 head which is a great sounding amp.
Im really thinking about a badlander , I really wish they gave it 3 channels.
What boost pedal are you using?
I mention which ones I'm using in the video
@@belligerentamateur i just rewatched and it is not mentioned.
=
Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites
That's crazy! I appreciate it!!!
Me too...diggin it
Great Video Kyle! Looking forward to the EVH Stealth and Badlander!
It'll be up next!
this may sound weird, but i can hear a good portion of mark series DNA in the badlanders low-end
I agree. In this vid, the badlander sounded like a Mark V, Ch 3 in Mk IV mode with a slightly looser distortion profile.
Yeah, it sounds very weird but I can hear what you saying?
Great demo, thanks man! I went into this thinking I would prefer the Badlander but I gotta say I'm really digging the MW here. The MW sounds a bit more scooped and 3D, where the Badlander is more focused and cutting. Cool but a bit raspy sounding for my tastes, as I prefer a slightly softer attack. Kinda thinking I might spring for a Triple MW!
You know me. I'm a huge Dual Rec fan and my Dual Rack Mount is my ultimate tone. I had a MW and loved it but it wasn't quite as good as the rack. The Badlander in my opinion is an obvious huge win. For me its everything the newer Dual Recs lacked and they built the Badlander specifically for me.
Dang. I think that multi-watt sounds really freaking good.
I agree! Best sounding Rectifier I've owned!
I know everyone says “50 watts is loud enough” but I’ve found that some 50 watt amps lack bottom end punch due (specifically in the room or in a band setting) to the smaller transformers. Almost like they don’t “push air” as well. I play in a really loud band with my other guitarist using a JP2C. How do you feel about the 50 watt badlander in that respect?
Truthfully I haven't gotten to use it in a band setting yet. I will this weekend! The onyl 50 watt amp that was ever lacking for me was the Single Rectifier. That one farted out badly at high volumes, fell apart.
@@belligerentamateur Thanks for the reply. I’m debating whether or not to snag the 50 or 100. Killer channel by the way. Probably the best amp demos I’ve seen in a long time!
I fully agree with you Steve!
awesome video...awesome playing! I just purchased the 50th anniversary dual rectifier, which is supposed to arrive on Monday. The wait is killing me...been passing the time watching videos to hear all the amazing tones that will be at my disposal! I think both amps sound awesome, can't go wrong with either. 🤘😀🤘
The wait is ALWAYS the worst part, haha! Everyone wins with these amps!
Very cool that you're finding a way to make our current rectifiers sound like a badlander. I really want a badlander but I'm going for the quad cortex. I've got a triple rec and I think I'm going to try and blend the two to give it that badlander feel.
Multiwatt by a mile, IMO. Badlander sounds like it's missing whatever gives a DR its massive heft.
what are you thinking of the roadster in comparison? its just such an amazing underrated rectifier with more options than any dual or triple and even cheaper used..
Every recto I've played needed tons of outboard gear to sound decent at all...an absolute toy compared to my markiic+ and all my mkiii. Can't judge any of these amps on youtube...these 2 sound near identical.i also have a jp2c..which is far better than a recto...but not as good as the 80s mark amps....
This is my favorite channel now :) . They are both awesome, I very slightly prefer the Badlander.
Dude that's wild! Thanks for being here man!
If anything the video highlights what's in each amp's power section EL34 Badlander vs 6L6 MW. Each has it's application. Just great amps 🤘
Anyone know if the badlander still has some of that recto character like the top end sizzle?
Great comparison and video man. I love that you express your opinion and not try to stay neutral and keep everyone happy like other guys. Keep up the good work. :)
Both sound great, but the Badlander sounds more Marshall-ish to me. I prefer the DR, it seems a bit smoother (if that is the right word). Great demo and comparison regardless.
I was about to say. That badlander sounds like my DSL with the gain cranked. Maybe slightly cleaner. Dual rectifier all day. It has that specific Mesa sound you hear right away.
Kyle, is it you who says that a Shure SM57 together with a Royer mic makes a great combination for recording? Or did I get that wrong?
Thanks so much for doing this! I’m sold on trying out the Badlander. I would love to have heard the Multi-Watt Orange channel vintage mode boosted against the crunch of the Badlander. If you get around to a follow up videos with any viewer requests, keep that one in mind. Excellent work!
Hey there! The only difference between the Orange and Red channels is the sweep of the Presence pot, so doing it on the Red should be extremely close, just with a little more aggressive presence
Badlander I do like! 👍🏽
Great job on these comparisons. Subscribed!
Personally I prefer the traditional dual rectifier sound. It’s sludgier and heavier to me and just more brutal. The badlander sounds like any other modern metal amp on the market to me. It’s not bad at all, great actually, but it’s kinda generic among Revv, PRS Archon, Peavey Invective etc.
I’ve been going back and forth between my 6505 and 3ch dual rec and they’re a lot more different from each other than the Badlander and the 5150III Stealth.
Thanks man! I hope they help. I agree, they're 2 different beasts built for different purposes, and they serve each of their purposes well
Hey Kyle, how are the Badlander compared to the old Triple XXX? Do you prefere the Triple XXX over the Badlander?
The badlander sounds very close to one of the original first runs of 300 or so units in the early 90s to me, and has more of a tremoverb feel. could of come up with a better name than " badlander"
You sound so serious 😄👍🏻 Good to see you relaxed and goofing around in your later videos 😜👍🏻 Thanks for all the comparisons you do! Great content!
I’m liking the badlander. Don’t know if it’s the looks making me like it more. Lol 😂 love the black.
50 watts is plenty for people that aren't selling out stadiums
Sounds great man.
I like the badlander better personally.
I'm wondering if that low end girth you're missing in the Badlander 50 would be present in the 100w model. If so, that could shake up the end results!
That's possible. I have Multiwatt Dual Rectifier and it definitely has considerably less girth in 50 watt mode. Since the Badlander 100 is Multiwatt as well, I wouldn't bother with being limited to a 50watt only variant.
prefer the multiwatt here. Don't really dig the recto sound without the full low end. Or else it sounds scratchy, like something's missing in the sound.
Totally get it man! I think this was Mesa's attmept to pull in people who wanted a tighter and more mid focused rectifier. One does not replace the other IMO. The multi watt sounds killer here too
You're the only pro who instantly fixes what my ears recognize, and adjust it, creating 100% perfect comparisons.
Respect
This was a perfect video! First time to come across your channel, and I am an immediate fan. For me, I preferred the multi watt, and I have come to the conclusion that the best way to get more mids and clarity with a Recto is to stack and pair it with something like a Mark series amp or a the Wizard Modern Classic I or II are even better. The Rectos are best doing what they do best, and trying to evolve that in the Badlander just does not seem to work for me, even though what Mesa was trying to do was an attempt to rectify the issues with the Recto (convenient pun that was unintentional) that have kept it relegated to just being a niche tool for me rather than something that could be a main part of my sound. It all does not really matter much for me anyway as I found a more preferable option with the Wizard MTL Mk II. If I had enough room and reasons to justify the additional cost, I would have kept my Recto around, but the models in the Axe Fx III are able to fill that small void when needed.
Great demo. They both sound great. I thought they were pretty similar tbh. I preferred the Multiwatt and it seemed tight enough as is.
In my opinion the badlander doesn’t have enough gain
But still my favourite recto from the videos I’ve seen. Tight I like tight amps .
I just bought that exact Multi-watt from a guy on Reverb. Can't believe this is the exact amp and I guess the guy didn't do the Reverb "bump" because it was buried in tube and amp cover ads way at the bottom but found it and purchased today. Thought I'd look and see if there was a Kyle Bull video on it and here it was. Been watching your channel for a couple of years now (at 2023) and have to say.....That second to the last riff you did that chugs through then does pull offs on the D & A strings is one of the most bad ass riffs I've seen someone do on UA-cam. Love that riff Kyle....Oh, I probably should ask...Did you sell that amp? Is this guy telling me the truth..(I'm sure he's not BS'ing me just thought I'd ask) dAve
definitely need to see badlander vs 5150 el34 asap
Cool video, thanks for doing it. The badlander is definitely cool but, for now, it's not enough to get me to replace my beloved multi-watt.
Thanks for checking it out!
Sick demo as usual bro. I think I still prefer the Multiwatt's upper mid aggression. Can't go wrong with either.
100% feel you man! I get that for sure. They both have greatness in them
It's a Win Win
Agreed!
Kyle you should try to do a boss katana with dual rectifier patch vs original mesa recto video , would be sickk
Dude, out of nowhere you become one of my fav channels! Excellent vid! Can't wait for the EVH Stealth faceoff. I have a JP-2C with a Badlander on order. Question is, do I keep the JP-2C as well or sell it for a new guitar?
I'm honored! Thanks so much for hanging out man! Appreciate the feedback! I still need to get my hands on a JP2C
feel like the JP-2C will be a collector soon after the Gibson buyout.
Hey. Great video. Did you use the 50 watt mode on the multi watt?
Thanks!! And yes I did!
Is Rectifier when set to variac and set at 50watts, seem very spongy...in compared to the Badlander's tighness? Variac on Badlander seems still tight.
Why didn't they keep all the low end and just add a resona knob on the badlander. A negative feedback would go a low way too if it still has that lose flub feel to it. I think the badlander may have more chunk reminds me more of valveking which smashes my multi watt as it has more tone, clarity and chunk
Would be cool to see the badlander 25 vs mini rec
Love your channel, and you're a super awesome dude.
Dunno why anyone would play a rec over marshall/5150. Unless you don't wanna be heard in a mix
Great comparison dude, I prefer the Badlander as well but the Multiwatt still sounds great! Would love a quick comparison of the Badlander vs the EVH 50 Watt Stealth. Cheers bro.
aaaaaaand just got to the end of the vid where you mention just that. lol
@@SlinkyT82 Haha! It's already recorded my man! Gonna edit tonight and post tomorrow!
@@belligerentamateur nice!! Looking forward to that and the Granophyre demo you mentioned coming up. Far too few clips on that boi. You've been doing a killer job, keep it up! 🔥
Great video. Quick question, are you, or are you not Matt Damon?
This video, as well as the Cab Clone with the ability to load your own IRs sold me on the Badlander. I’m really happy with my Badlander, as it’s the best sounding amp I’ve heard for high gain and old school crunch. My only gripe is the clean channel, but the clean channel isn’t why people buy this amp in the first place.
i was about to message you with a request for this. i put together some initiation, and i would like to thank you for making this video.
Hey man, are you running el34’s or 6l6’s in the Badlander?
El34! All the stock tubes are still in there
That is killer sounding, super tight 🤘🏻
Great video! You definitely deserve way more subs.
Thanks man, really appreciate that!
He will grow fast. No one else compares amps this clearly and raw. A competitor does 30 minute productions with drum backings and never touches tone knobs, doesn't help us.
What impulse response? Sounds great!
what is the setting for multiwatt modern channel?
Can the badlander play vintage stuff? I like the combo amp. It has headphones output. Fender doesn’t
Absolutely does the vintage stuff well! Crunch channel would excel at that
I caught that All Out War riffage in there \m/
Hey man. I appreciate all your Badlander vids, especially the comparison ones. I was having a really hard time deciding on the BL or the Dual Rec. I ordered the 100w Badlander this morning! Thanks for helping! Any chance of reviewing a JP2C someday?
How you liking it? I'm torn between both these and 100 watt stealth
@@AllMetalReviewsame man, have you got either of these? it’s been a while haha
@@llnkv_ yea I actually got the badlander 100
@@AllMetalReview how do you like it? do you have something to compare it with? I’m currently thinking about the badlander, kinda dreamed to have a mesa amp, and since I’m in Europe, it’s both rare and expensive. Was thinking hard whether it’s worth it or if I should just get evh5150 50w (almost $2k less in Europe lol)
@@llnkv_ yea prices in eu are crazy. Badlander in usa just went to 2499 orginally 2799. I've tried every evh except the stealth. To me the badlander is on another level. It's not the most gained out amp I still run a sd1 to tighten and to push a tad more gain. Badlander has way more features and snarls in the mids. Stealth has more gain and bigger low end.
They both sound great . I have to give the edge to the badlanders in your video but it could just be the eq. There's lots of treble dialed in on both of them. The bad Lander is almost twice as expensive so that would make the decision pretty easy for me.
Badlander wins IMO. But when compared to a Slo30, it loses lol. I'd save the money and get a Slo30.
LoL
Shame the bl is near 5k in Australia
gotta go with the Duel rectifier on this one !!!!
Dual Rectifier more brutal and Badlander do sound like every amps that came out lately 🤔
@@andreriant8513 That's what it was, it sounds like Revv/Archon/etc and too polished imo.
@@andreriant8513 Yep, my thoughts as well. Very generic modern metal tone coming from the badlander. Not sounding bad at all but nothing outstanding in today’s amp market.
Multiwatt sounds fuller to me
Do you feel like you are missing the tube rectification or variac power? The badlander has a lot of features I really like, but have wondered about those missing features. To me the option of tube rectification is something that other high gain amps don't have so I feel like it was a neat feature.
The Badlander does have the variac function built in, but I truthfully was always trying get the older Rectifiers tighter, and the Tube Rectification moved it in the other direction. SO I personally don't miss it, but I can definitely see where others would
You mean: "No boots on"?
All out war soaked in torment boosted.... un boosted lol
So I’m a late 90s and early 2000s hard rock guy. Favorite band is tool but love everything from korn and slipknot to foo fighters. What amp do u suggest?
Probably a dual rectifier multiwatt, should handle all those tones with room to spare
Thanks man. Starting to be my new favorite UA-cam channel
I’ve binged your videos all day as I’m waiting for my badlander to be delivered. Lovin your content just straight up in you face thrasher!! Just my kinda style.
thanks man! hope the Badlander suits you!! Thanks for hanging out!
Nice axe dude, I have basically have the same version of that guitar but in the Reaper 7 string/multiscale format, one of the best guitars I've ever owned.
Thanks dude! I'm really digging it!
wow you saved me a lot of money ....they basically sound the same or very close
In these clips they sound similar but recording will do that. Differences are much more noticeable in the room!
Does the Badlander has the stock El34 tubes?
yep!
Your a good guitar player
What power tube in Dual Multiwatt? EL34 or 6L6
6L6!
Which pedal are you using to boost the amp?
I talk about it in the video. Mesa Grid Slammer
Man it's cool to look back on your old videos and see how much you progressed! Your voice was borderline ASMR in this one and oddly enough it found it soothing and pleasant to listen to hahaha
Haha, you mean you don't like me YELLING at the camera now?!
@@belligerentamateur Lolllll As long as I see your pretty face baby, I don't mind :D
Nice playing brotha!! Subbed!
Thanks man! Appreciated!!
I wonder if you had put el34s in that multiwatt they'd end up sounding almost identical?
Is that a question or a statement? Lol. No, the differences are many in the way the circuits of each amp is designed. It does not come down to power tubes.
@@belligerentamateur Still, I think it would be an interesting experiment, since the main difference going from 6l6 to el34 is tighter bass response and more pronounced mid range, both of which also happen to be the main difference between the multiwatt and badlander.
@@tianlee3487 I did a video when I compared 6l6 to el34 in the Badlander and the differences were very very small. Not anything you'd notice in a mix. You can find it on my channel.
This is a great review! Thanks!
You bet!
🤘
Your riffs make me want to jump on my drumkit
DO IT
Great video!!!!
Put 6L6 in the badlander then do the comparison, it'll be identical
Nah man, power tubes don't make that big of a difference. There are big differences in the designs of the preamps on these 2. Eventually I'll shoot them out with the same power tubes but again, they're still different amps in design!
@@belligerentamateur I've seen another video in which the Badlander was compared between EL34 and 6L6. There was a noticeable difference in tone for the same settings. Definitely would be closer to the Dual Rec. I'd be very interested to see your shoot with the same 6L6 in both amps. Thank you
You might be surprised! When you get bored of the el34 tone, try some 6L6s and see. To my ears the 6L6 are more low end focused where the el34 pushes the high mids more. Could be my imagination or not enough to make a difference in a mix but you never know!
The Rectifier has pronounced lows whilst the Bandlander has pronounced mids; tonally these amps are significantly different. I'm starting to think the way MESA addressed the flabby low end the rectifier can be afflicted with, is by shifting the emphasis from the lows (recto) to the mids (banlander). Thanks for the comparison. I'm still in favour of the rectifier for that low/fat/dense/mean tone.
Agreed on your assessment!
What's your tuning?
Somewhere around E Standard, haha. I tune it to E Standard and then tune by ear for the next week after so it tends to drift down a bit.
@@belligerentamateur cool man. Just curious. I thought it was Eb lol.
@@timbuk1126 hell it very well could have been! Haha. I need to make a better habit of tuning before a video. Lol
I always have many doubts about these tests. First of all there is not only trash metal, but everyone does what they can do, second option the multiwatt has many more setting options that make it very easy to confuse the user during a test like this, also you are comparing a head that is born 100w in 50 mode with one that starts at 50w. The multiwatt must be played at 100 if you want to bring out the best. I own both heads in 100w and honestly this test doesn't do it justice. Maybe learn a solo ..
Who hurt you?
@@cardbored_ I have these tube heads and I am sorry to see a little objective comparison. For the rest, the boy is nice, I gladly follow his channel.
Nice comparison. I own the Multiwatts : it is no more a Rectifier but an amp for djent or stuff with 8 strings guitars. I still play the 2 channels Rectifier from the 90's. My Revision D, F and G are really better than these new amps. Your video shows me that the Badlander is not for me at all. This is the worst Recto I've ever heard beacause this is not a true Recto. Today I played one of my Triple Rev F from 1992 in a Matamp 412 cab loaded with V30 for some Corrosion of Conformity / Lamb of God vibes. So good, so fat, so deep. Nothing compare to this crappy sound without soul of the Bad(amp)lander. I own an old Soldano SLO100 and if I had to buy a new amp today, I would probably get the new revision of the SLO with a 412 Bogner cab (V30 too), but not a Boogie. They have lost their identity. I don't understand why Mesa put EL34 in the Badlander. If I want an EL34 tone I play a Friedman BE100 or a 1968 Marshall superlead. The 6L6s are the core of the Boogie sound. The 1985 Mark IIC+ and the 1992/93 Dual Rectifier Revision F are still the best Boogies ever. A question of taste I guess... And about the cab clone, it sounds like shit. I really prefer the Rivera Rockcrusher.
All Out War once again🤘🏼🤘🏼If anyone is torn between both of those amps I would definitely recommend the Mesa TC-100 IMO. Awesome vid!!
🤘🏼🤘🏼
When Glenn Fricker talks about the cab being 99% of the tone... you kinda wonder how bad his hearing really is.
